[Bug 1861380] [NEW] Internal display backlight not working on a Intel Apollolake based tablet

2020-01-29 Thread Mikko Kovanen
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Problem:
With current kernels (both Ubuntu kernels and mainline kernels) the display
backlight in one of our tablet variants does not work because i915 GFX driver
lacks support for I2C transfers from display initialization VBT sequences and
the backlight driver is left uninitialized.

Ubuntu version:
Ubuntu 20.04 daily build (downloaded on 2020-01-20)

Device:
Aava Mobile Inari10B tablet (Intel Apollolake platform)

Existing fixes:
Intel has implement a kernel fix for this problem and it is currently on its
way to 5.6 kernel
(https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git/commit/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/display/intel_dsi_vbt.c?h=next-20200129=8cbf89db294166cc13d90a89422605e0c9f8bbc2).
Unfortunately that change is not working correctly as-is, further fix is
currently in drm-intel-next-queued
(https://cgit.freedesktop.org/drm/drm-intel/commit/?id=de409661c4c90d63cfc64579edbad0a6b10bd50d),
which should also end up in 5.6 kernel because it has a fixes tag referring to
the initial fix commit.

Background information:
Our company produces Intel Apollolake based tablets and some of our customers
would like to use Ubuntu as the OS. Optimal situation would be that we could
recommend Ubuntu 20.04 LTS release to our customers.
Since I was unable to find conclusive information regarding which kernel
version is going to end up in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS release, I decided to open this
bug to resolve if and how the fix for backlight problem could get included in
Ubuntu 20.04 LTS release in it's first version.

BR,
Mikko Kovanen

[Bug 1861379] Re: [Ubu 20.04][kernel-5.4.0-12-generic] debugfs: Directory 'imc' with parent 'powerpc' already present! lot of messages logged while booting

2020-01-29 Thread Frank Heimes
The commit "powerpc/imc: Dont create debugfs files for cpu-less nodes" -
41ba17f20ea835c489e77bd54e2da73184e22060 is already in focal (since
Ubuntu-5.4.0-8.11).

The commit "powerpc/powernv: Avoid re-registration of imc debugfs directory" -
48e626a got upstream accepted with 5.5, hence it not yet in focal.
I'm going request to add it to focals 5.4.

[Bug 1655111] Re: LibVirt Apparmor profile has qemu-bridge-helper listed in the wrong directory

2020-01-29 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
The original bug here was fixed by changing the sub-element to

  /usr/{lib,lib64,lib/qemu,libexec}/qemu-bridge-helper Cx ->
qemu_bridge_helper,

Which covers the correct path as well.
Due to that it is "now" detected correctly.

This detection puts it under the label of libvirt and that is what triggers the
new case of needing:
  label=libvirtd//qemu_bridge_helper

The change above was due to:
https://libvirt.org/git/?p=libvirt.git;a=commit;h=123cc3e11c03442fd87f00a9089882ec65cffdb8

That was in 3.2 which maps to >=artful (17.10).
It fixes the original bug reported here (to get the helper confined)

But the named labelling was added later
https://libvirt.org/git/?p=libvirt.git;a=commit;h=a3ab6d42d825499af44b8f19f9299e150d9687bc

That maps to 5.1 which would be >=19.10 Eoan and reflects the latter
bug.

I think now things make sense - thanks to both of you!

I'll keep this bug even thou the original report was fixed to address
the second related issue.

[Bug 1861222] Re: Libvirt parallel shutdown is not truly parallel when agent-based shutdown is used

2020-01-29 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
This will be the same in all versions I have ever seen @Bryce.

Usually in my impression no one really cares about libvirt-guests.sh
except bugs driven through Distro bug reports (of the last 9 changes 8
are Ubuntu and one is Suse). And even less for parallel as Ubuntu is the
only one defaulting to that.

Thanks for the bug @Aristarkh.
We might need to add some bit there to make it truly async then - but the prio
on it will not be high. I'll keep this open until I get back to it unless
someone else beats me.

It's impossible to know, but I think the case for changing a long-term default
needs to be stronger than "I wasn't paying attention when I installed the
package and it caused problems". That may sound harsh, but that's how it
comes across to me. No configuration is an option. If I am understanding
correctly, all you had to do was select it.

[Bug 1854982] Re: Lost compatibilty for backup between Ubuntu 19.10 and FreeBSD 12.0

2020-01-29 Thread Richard Laager
In terms of a compact reproducer, does this work:

# Create a temp pool with large_dnode enabled:
truncate -s 1G lp1854982.img
sudo zpool create -d -o feature@large_dnode=enabled lp1854982
$(pwd)/lp1854982.img

# Create a dataset with dnodesize=auto
sudo zfs create -o dnodesize=auto lp1854982/ldn

# Create a send stream
sudo zfs snapshot lp1854982/ldn@snap
sudo zfs send lp1854982/ldn@snap > lp1854982-ldn.zfs

sudo zpool export lp1854982

cat lp1854982-ldn.zfs | ssh 192.168.1.100 zfs receive zroot/ldn

If that doesn't reproduce the problem, adjust it until it does. You were
using `zfs send -c`, so maybe that's it. You may need to enable more
pool features, etc.

But if this can be reproduced with an empty dataset on an empty pool,
the send stream file is 8.5K (and far less compressed). Attach the
script for reference and the send stream to a FreeBSD bug.

[Bug 1860315] Re: Default installation should be Local Only

2020-01-29 Thread Christian Reis
Thanks Scott. Sincere questions: do you have any evidence users
appreciate the current default? I'm asking myself what is the use case
in which a user wants postfix to be installed, listening on all
interfaces and yet.. unconfigured?

And thanks Robie. Yeah, I honestly had no idea that the option would
have caused mail loss the moment the package got installed. I normally
don't worry too much about debconf options, because I know I can change
them later, and trust the maintainer to set a default that won't hurt.
This is one of those few cases where it isn't safe.

[Bug 1861070] Re: Raspberry Pi 4B: USB OTG is not working

2020-01-29 Thread Hui Wang
Oh, if we don't add dtoverlay=dwc2, the usb port is driven by dwc_otg
driver by default, if we add dtoverlay=dwc2, then the usb port is driven
by dwc2.

And I tested with only dtoverlay=dwc2 (no dr_mode=peripheral), i could
see usb0 net device both from rpi4 board and my host machine (via
ifconfig -a).

[Bug 1861251] Re: 'extended_part_no' referenced before assignment error during install

2020-01-29 Thread Dmitriy Vinokurov
Actually I've got around this problem by deleting sda5 which was small
swap partition and successfully installed system (after tweaking system
datetime cause without Internet access datetime on server was Jan 2018
and installer complained on invalid Ubuntu certificate and failed).

But I was able to reproduce problem on VirtualBox. Here is steps to do it:
1. Create virtual machine with two disks - on first (20 GB for example) create
msdos partition table (I used gparted from ubuntu-19.10-desktop-amd64.iso) with
1 primary partition (I've created 18.5 GB ext4, it will be sda1) and 1 extended
partition (sda2) consisting of 1 logical partition (e.g. 1.5 GB swap, sda5),
second leave as is (sdb, I've created 10 GB disk).
2. Load VM from ubuntu-18.04.3-live-server-amd64.iso, pass to disk selection,
select entire disk and choose second one (sdb, without partitions), apply
(settings should looke like this https://ibb.co/YZBSMvR), curtin will start to
work and will fail just like on our physical server (https://ibb.co/4f4rJRY,
https://ibb.co/nfQ8S0z).

Attached /var/log/installer/subiquity-curtin-install.conf as Ryan Harper
have asked.

[Bug 1853760] Re: php 7.2 has dependency problems and they are not letting to update apache2 and php7.2 * modules

2020-01-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
Unfortunately, the error that started the installation problems occurred
earlier than the start of your log files. If you happen to still have
the older log files you could do some archaeology in them to see when
the error first occurred, and what started it.

One of the typical ways to get into this service is when some unrelated
service is upgraded as part of your routine system update. Typically,
the service then needs to be restarted to pick up its fixes, but there
are situations where it fails to start up, such as if there is an issue
with the formerly working configuration. The service remains installed
in this case, but left in an unconfigured (aka 'broken') state. Now,
any further updates of any packages related to that service will have to
be restarted, but the faulty config will not resolve itself. Neither
rebooting nor reinstalling things will resolve it.

In other words, the errors may be mentioning php7.2, but that's possibly
just because some service (mysql? apache?) is in an incomplete state.

Depending on your particular case there are two solutions:
- either remove the offending package if you don't want to continue using it.
- Or if you do want to keep it please fix the configuration so that re-starting
the service will work.

Either way, please let us know how you're doing, and if you got it
resolved in the meantime it would likely help other bug reporters if you
explained what steps you took.

I have already tested it in the mainline kernel. I ran the command as
told. Same problem persists in all kernels I have tried. Currently,
tested on uname -r = 5.3.0-28-generic the mainline kernel for 18.04.3
LTS.

[Bug 1853638] Re: BCM57416 NetXtreme-E Dual-Media 10G RDMA Ethernet device seems to be dropping data

2020-01-29 Thread Nivedita Singhvi
Hello, Edwin,

We have two separate users/customers filing reports, and I can answer for
one of them. I'll ask the original poster separately as well to reply.

With respect to one of these situations, this is the following system:

Dell PowerEdge R440/0XP8V5, BIOS 2.2.11 06/14/2019

Note that a similar system does not have any issues:

Dell Inc. PowerEdge R430/0CN7X8, BIOS 2.3.4 11/08/2016

So the NIC in the "bad" environment is:

BCM57416 NetXtreme-E Dual-Media 10G RDMA Ethernet Controller (rev 01)
Product Name: Broadcom Adv. Dual 10G SFP+ Ethernet

The NIC in the "good" environment is:

Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries NetXtreme II BCM57810
10 Gigabit Ethernet [14e4:1006]
Product Name: QLogic 57810 10 Gigabit Ethernet

I'll have to scrub some files and see what I can attach,
apologies, I'll have it here by tmrw.

Unfortunately, we don't have an easy reproducer.
A single iperf and netperf test (both UDP and TCP) showed identical
results from both "good" and "bad" environments.

What we have is an identical kernel, network configuration and
stack with the "bad" system showing double, triple the latency
to the systems from a remote server. I'll have more information
for you shortly here regarding the exact k8 cmd.

2020-01-29 Thread Richard Anthony Horan
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
  Kernel 5.5.0
  pulseaudio:
Installed: 1:11.1-1ubuntu7.4
X570 Aorus Master Motherboard. ALC1220 ESS Sabre sound.

I have surround 5.1 speakers and the Front Left and Right are Muted.
I have to unmute Headphones in alsamixer to hear sound from the front left
and right speakers is the workaround.

This step should not be required for speakers 5.1 to work.

[Bug 1861359] Re: swap storms kills interactive use

2020-01-29 Thread Seth Arnold
apport information

** Description changed:

Hello, several times since upgrading to focal from 19.04 I've found my
computer entirely unresponsive for periods of twenty or thirty seconds.
No mouse movement, no keyboard input, the screen output does not change.

My computer was using swap space and despite very slow writeout speeds
well below what the NVME drive can handle, the computer was unusable.

I've captured some vmstat 1 output and top output that I started
collecting during the event. (Normally one very long painful period is
followed by several shorter periods of uselessness.)

  Thanks

[Bug 1834875] Re: cloud-init growpart race with udev

2020-01-29 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
So I've been handed the job of moving this bug forward this iteration.

Having just re-read all the comments again and read some source code
while listening to loud techno music my observations/questions are
these:

1) this is a doozy

2) I would really like to see complete udevadm monitor and inotify
output for successful and failing boots

3) As far as I can read the gdisk source, there is no point when there
no entry for the partition on disk (i.e. it only writes the partition
tables once)

4) I think this comment "I believe the kernel event is emitted before
the partition table has necessarily been fully updated so when udev
processes the event and reads the partition table, sometimes it finds
the partition and sometimes it doesn't." is not quite right, or at least
there is another possibility entirely consistent with the observed
facts: the diff in comment #24 looks more like udev finds the partition
OK but fails to fill out the ID_PART_ENTRY_* entries. These come from
libblkid via udev-builtin-blkid.c. The part about this theory that
doesn't make sense is that the ID_FS_* entries are there and they come
from the same codepath. So who knows!

[Bug 1861043] Re: Xorg freeze

2020-01-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. Yes the messages about "Memory pressure relief" sound unusual.
I've never seen that before.

Don't worry about the inability to switch VTs. That's not part of the
bug, that's just because switching VTs is the responsibility of the
currently active display server. If Xorg has frozen then you also won't
be able to switch VTs.

Next, please monitor the memory usage of your processes before the next
freeze happens, with something like:

ps auxw --sort -rss | head

so we can identify if and what is using too much memory.

In case the issue is gnome-shell like it sounds, please also ensure you
have uninstalled all third-party gnome-shell extensions except for the
standard Ubuntu ones.

That's tricky then. I verified the upstream fix resolved the issue for

remaining issue is one that I can't reproduce :(

[Bug 1860930] Re: [Asus GX531GX] Internal speakers are sometimes noisy - bad audio

2020-01-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
You need four packages:

https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.5/linux-
headers-5.5.0-050500_5.5.0-050500.202001262030_all.deb

https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.5/linux-
headers-5.5.0-050500-generic_5.5.0-050500.202001262030_amd64.deb

https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.5/linux-image-
unsigned-5.5.0-050500-generic_5.5.0-050500.202001262030_amd64.deb

https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.5/linux-
modules-5.5.0-050500-generic_5.5.0-050500.202001262030_amd64.deb

then install them together:

  sudo dpkg -i *.deb

and then reboot.

If it still doesn't work then try:

  sudo update-grub

[Bug 1776447] Re: Xorg's Indirect GLX broken from upstream regression

2020-01-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I can't find any existing reports of that secondary crash, but ideally
it would not usually be part of the fix here...

I guess it's OK if the secondary crash was impossible without the first
fix. If it wasn't then ideally a new bug should be opened to describe
that and both bugs mentioned in the patch.
