Hi Hadmut,
we had the same discussion over the weekend if 8.2 would be good to have in
20.04.

I subscribed cjwatson who usually does openssh updates to comment on his
intentions in this regard.

[Bug 1855679] Comment bridged from LTC Bugzilla

2020-02-16 Thread bugproxy
--- Comment From mranw...@us.ibm.com 2020-02-17 01:53 EDT---
On the original (old) kernel on a tuleta (p8) I was able to create a hard
lockup. I haven't been able to recreate that on the -76 kernel on a tuleta. I
did, however, recreate a stall on the tuleta. I did not see either on some run
time on a boston.

I'm going to compare this with focal on the tuleta.

[Bug 1855668] Re: lockdown on power

2020-02-16 Thread Frank Heimes
Hi Daniel,
I found that that commit
69393cb03ccd "powerpc/xmon: Restrict when kernel is locked down"
landed upstream with v5.5-rc1.

I created a separate LP bug / ticket to get it into focal's kernel 5.4 (hoping
that it's a simple cherry pick):
LP 1863562 - "Restrict ppc64el xmon to read-only-mode if kernel is locked down"
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-power-systems/+bug/1863562

You may consider mirroring LP 1863562 to bugzilla for completeness
reasons.

[Bug 1863562] [NEW] Restrict ppc64el xmon to read-only-mode if kernel is locked down

2020-02-16 Thread Frank Heimes
Public bug reported:

This is a spin off of LP 1855668 (see comment #11 there:)

Please could you pick up (in addition to the issue still pending) commit
69393cb03ccd ("powerpc/xmon: Restrict when kernel is locked down").

>From the pull-request that included it, the commit does the following:

- A change to xmon (our crash handler / pseudo-debugger) to restrict
it to read-only mode when the kernel is lockdown'ed, otherwise it's
trivial to drop into xmon and modify kernel data, such as the
lockdown state.

To exploit this you'd need to boot with command line including
'xmon=rw', as xmon isn't read-write by default on the Focal kernel, but
that's not exactly a challenge. I have used this to drop down from
lockdown=confidentiality to lockdown=none on 5.4.0-14-generic #17-Ubuntu

Intel (Mengdong@Intel) told us it is too complicated to backport the

important. we will not backport these 3 patches to osp1 kernel until
Intel backport the fixing patches to osp1 kernel.

[Bug 1863184] Re: Application does not stay open on Ubuntu 20.04 and closes automatically

2020-02-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If you found the crash file was:

  /var/crash/_usr_bin_totem.1000.crash

then you would run:

  ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_totem.1000.crash

or

  apport-cli /var/crash/_usr_bin_totem.1000.crash

Since I can't see your computer I am unable to verify if that is the
correct file name.

[Bug 1856516] Re: Excessive memory usage by gnome-shell in 19.10

2020-02-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for your efforts...

heaptrack_gui is telling me the largest peak allocation location is
either 60MB or 106MB, depending on what tab you look at. So that's not
evident of any leaks in the heap.

If your RSS was 1.6GB then that is still evident of a major leak or
bloat. The fact that heaptrack can't find that memory tells me it's not
in the heap. Most likely mmap'd for something like texture allocation.

You'd need to use a tool that can monitor all mmaps at the lowest level,
something like HEAP_PROFILE_ONLY_MMAP=1 with
https://gperftools.github.io/gperftools/heapprofile.html

[Bug 1863086] Re: unkillable process (kernel NULL pointer dereference)

2020-02-16 Thread Matthew Ruffell
The regression was introduced by the following commit:

commit 315c69261dd3fa12dbc830d4fa00d1fad98d3b03
Author: Paul Wise
Date: Fri Aug 2 21:49:05 2019 -0700
Subject: coredump: split pipe command whitespace before expanding template

You can read it here:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/315c69261dd3fa12dbc830d4fa00d1fad98d3b03

This landed in 5.3-rc3, and is still in latest mainline. Reading through
the commit message, the linux-fsdevel message and the debian bug found
in the commit message, it just seems that the new changes omit the NULL
case, and construct the helper_argv[] array slightly differently than it
did before.

I confirmed this commit is the root cause by reverting this commit on a
v5.3 build and seeing the old correct behaviour return.

I'll try write a patch to fix this, or I will contact the upstream
maintainer for a fix in the coming days.

The problem exists as can be seen in the attached images when opening this post.
Now I don't know what else to do to try to send bug reports that you require.

The last attempt to open the totem through the terminal presented the

[Bug 1860806] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 and 19.04 new ethernet problem

2020-02-16 Thread JamesH
I don't think that apport-collect will work while I am offline. Please
let me know how I can run this command and send the data after I have
done the restart. Remember, after restart the problem goes away. I can't
run diagnostics on Internet access that requires Internet access to run.
As it looks like I am talking to an automated script rather than a real
person perhaps this is now a dead thread.

It's like we're trying to install without a bios_grub partition, but
subiquity shouldn't let you do that.

[Bug 1856738] Re: access always denied when using @{HOME} tunable in peer_addr for abstract socket

2020-02-16 Thread John Johansen
This is due to how the VAR is expanded

assuming

  @{HOME}=/home/*/

then

  @@{HOME}/.cache/ibus/dbus-*"

expands to

  /home/*//.cache/ibus/dbus-*"

and currently the secondary pass to cleanup // is not being done because the
code is treating addr as a profile name where // is a hierarchy separator. We
can treat addr as a pathname so that the cleanup pass is done.

Long term we should make variable expansion smarter so that trailing /
in a var can not result in a // in the expansion.

[Bug 1856516] Re: Excessive memory usage by gnome-shell in 19.10

2020-02-16 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Here's a heaptrack trace of a gnome-shell session; I logged out one
gnome-shell hit 1.6GB RSS. Hopefully this is useful, or could point to a
specific thing to test.

[Bug 1863184] Re: Application does not stay open on Ubuntu 20.04 and closes automatically

2020-02-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I have looked through that crash file and can confirm it is totem
crashing, but it does not include a stack trace. To debug the problem
further it must be reported with:

  ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash

or if that doesn't work then try something like:

  apport-cli YOURFILE.crash

[Bug 1863186] Re: package sdl2-dev depends on outdated version of libpulse-dev

2020-02-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It seems this is a side effect of a mistake made in the release and
subsequent withdrawal of update 1:11.1-1ubuntu7.5. So it's not a bug in
the code but is a problem people will encounter with Ubuntu updates...

This should automatically correct itself with the re-release of
1:11.1-1ubuntu7.5. In the meantime you can manually install whichever
set of packages you need from either:

1:11.1-1ubuntu7.4:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/1:11.1-1ubuntu7.4/+build/17893827

1:11.1-1ubuntu7.5:

[Bug 1863391] Re: GNOME fractional scaling: fullscreen video misbehaves

2020-02-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it
will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1863391

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 1863400] Re: gnome-shell reports problem on boot

2020-02-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
1. Please try sending the crash file by running:

  sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.121.crash

and if that didn't work then try:

  sudo apport-cli /var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.121.crash

If either of those work then please tell us the new bug ID created.

If neither of the above worked then please:

2. Look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of
file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links
to recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1863532] [NEW] Invoking "python" brings inappropriate response from command-not-found when python3 installed

2020-02-16 Thread Neil McPhail
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Mate 20.04 development release, upgraded from 19.10. I don't have
python 2.7 installed, but have python 3 installed as per default.

Please see ascii-cast at
https://asciinema.org/a/SZR20NHz2FN6N6O1hj2Mqmnv8 .

Running `python` brings up text from command-not-found which suggests
installing `python3` as a solution to the missing command. `python3` is
already installed, is a later version than the one indicated by command-
not-found and does not supply a binary or symlink named `python`.

$ apt policy python
python:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: (none)
  Version table:
 2.7.17-1 -1
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
$ apt policy python3
python3:
  Installed: 3.8.0-3
  Candidate: 3.8.0-3
  Version table:
 *** 3.8.0-3 500

$ apt policy command-not-found
command-not-found:
  Installed: 19.10.0
  Candidate: 19.10.0
  Version table:

500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal/main i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I don't know whether this is a bug in python3 or command-not-found (the
latter of which doesn't seem to have been updated for 20.04 yet). i
don't know if it is intentional that `python3` will not provide a binary
or symlink named `python`. if that is the case, the output of `command-
not-found` should be updated to reflect that.
