Re: [Bug 1875673] Re: printer canon ip4600 only generic text mode

2020-05-05 Thread technobab
dear Andrew,

I solved my problem by downloading
printer-drive-gutenprint_5.3.3-4_amd64.deb (debian package)

then installed with: sudo apt install
./printer-drive-gutenprint_5.3.3-4_amd64.deb

then the proper driver appears when you add the printer in settings, not
the useless generic text driver, which does not even work.

good luck.

mike

[Bug 1866870] Re: KVM Guest pauses after upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04

2020-05-05 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi Andreas,
so the only upgrade you did to trigger this for you was to bump the kernel from
5.4.0-28.33 to 5.4.0-29.34 - nothing else? I have not (yet?) heard other
similar reports, but it might be just too early?
At least on my system for now things still work with the new kernel like before.

I'd recommend filing a new bug, refer to this one as maybe being related and
adding the following right away:
- kernel version (you have this here I know)
- qemu/libvirt/seabios/ovmf version (if you don't mind just attach `dpkg -l`)
- guest XML (if using libvirt) otherwise the qemu command-line
- add a cross check and report what happens with other guests configs (e.g. non
windows, using
another bios as the former issue was tied to seabios, use different guest CPU
types)
- the full /var/log/apt/history.log
- a date when you last started the VM successfully (not just
still-had-it-running, but started it)
and the date when it started to fail (probably yesterday then I guess)

When I enter and leave the activities screen, CPU time spikes to about
30%. At idle it runs between 3% and 13%.

Cumulative CPU time is over 8-10h.

I don't have any record of the resource usage when it was freezing, but
I will try to grab that if it happens again. This probably wasn't a low
memory situation as the machine had just booted and I had wasn't able to
run anything more than a terminal before I gave up and rebooted.

[Bug 1876946] Re: gnome-shell freezing with "Attempting to run a JS callback during garbage collection." messages

2020-05-05 Thread Kai Groner
In logs I have going back 6 months the errors "Attempting to run a JS
callback during garbage collection." and "The offending callback was
..." only appear on one other date.

There is a similar message "Attempting to call back into JSAPI during
the sweeping phase of GC." that appears more frequently.

I think it will be hard to get good timing data when the console is
freezing and unresponsive and I'm not sure when the issue might re-
occur.

I'm attaching the log from this session, as well as the log from my
current session for comparison.

[Bug 1876230] Re: liburcu: Enable MEMBARRIER_CMD_PRIVATE_EXPEDITED to address performance problems with MEMBARRIER_CMD_SHARED

2020-05-05 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Answering question 2. I have done a comprehensive performance analysis
based on the benchmark application.

Note: The SRU changes how the sys_membarrier syscall is used. The
implementation that we want to change to in this SRU never blocks, while
the previous implementation does. This makes performance analysis
entirely workload dependant. On busy servers with lots of background
processes, sys_membarrier will block more often, compared to quiet
servers with no background processes.

The following is based on a quiet server with no background processes.

[Bug 1876923] Re: Xorg freeze on shutdown

2020-05-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
We would like to see the system log of a prior boot where the freeze
occurred. To do that please:

1. Reproduce the freeze again.

2. Reboot, log in and immediately run:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

and then attach the resulting text file here.

[Bug 1876937] Re: Dock location reversed in RTL

2020-05-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt

** No longer affects: ubuntu

** Also affects: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Low

** Description changed:

- Please take a look at the following bug I've opened in the GNOME bug tracker:
+ he dock location is horizontally reversed, selecting left puts the dock
+ to the right and vice versa.

- I wasn't sure if it's Ubuntu related or GNOME only, please assist me
- with determining it.
+ Steps to reproduce (Ubuntu 20.04):
+
+ 1. Switch to an RTL language of your choice
+
+ 2. Open GNOME Settings
+
+ 3. Observe the Appearance icon (The default dock location is to the
+ right while the icon shows as if it's to the left)
+
+ 4. The selection says "Left" (שמאל in Hebrew) yet the dock is aligned to
+ the right, selecting the opposite option moves the dock to the left
+ although I selected "Right" (ימין in Hebrew).

[Bug 1877018] [NEW] Copy and Paste does not paste a clean path anymore

2020-05-05 Thread Leandro Heck
Public bug reported:

Since Ubuntu 19.04, 19.10 and now 20.04 the copy-and-paste is not
working properly.

WHAT I WANT TO DO:

Copy a file/folder with Ctrl+C (in nautilus) then paste the path into
the terminal/text file. This was the nicest and most-used feature. I use
that all the time. Now since some time ago, it does not work anymore.

WHAT HAPPENS:

The text being pasted has some extra info in front of the path.

EXAMPLE:

Ctrl+C with the ~/Downloads folder focused should yeild the path

/home/lheck/Downloads

Now, it gives me this:

x-special/nautilus-clipboard
copy
file:///home/lheck/Downloads

This text is useless when pasted. This is a regression, please, fix this, it is
still broken during 3 Ubuntu releases!!

Can you share a bit more details about how you have yours setup? What
does your partition table look like, what does the MD config look like,
what do you have in /etc/fstab for swap, etc.? I'm running into weird
issues with this configuration, separate from this bug.

[Bug 1876946] Re: gnome-shell freezing with "Attempting to run a JS callback during garbage collection." messages

2020-05-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That log message is actually pretty common and probably not related to
any freezes. To confirm this please open a Terminal window and start
monitoring the log:

  journalctl -f

Now please check to see if the messages correlate closely with the
freezes. And tell us if any of them appear when the freeze is *not*
happening.

[Bug 1874519] Re: ZFS installation on Raspberry Pi is problematic

2020-05-05 Thread Richard Laager
I think it used to be the case that zfsutils-linux depended on zfs-dkms
which was then provided by the kernel packages. That seems like a way to
solve this. Given that dkms is for dynamic kernel modules, it was always
a bit weird to see the kernel providing that. It should probably be that
zfsutils-linux depends on zfs-dkms | zfs-module, and then the kernel
provides zfs-module.

[Bug 1870189] Re: initramfs does not get loaded

2020-05-05 Thread Dexuan Cui via ubuntu-bugs
I think commen #6 is correct: it looks the 2018 patch introduced the
issue for us, but the patch is originally for "initrd-less boot
capabilities." and here we do need the initramfs file.

I guess the patch "ubuntu-add-initrd-less-boot-fallback.patch" is not
included into the grub shipped in the 20.04 .iso file ubuntu-20.04-live-
server-amd64.iso, but somehow it's included into the grub shipped in the
cloud-image? If so, I guess we can fix this bug by removing the patch
for cloud-image?

[Bug 1876992] Re: X11 session crash on using Gimp or LibreOffice

2020-05-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

Please also try selecting 'Ubuntu on Wayland' from the login screen.
Does that avoid the bug?

[Bug 1876910] Re: video stutter

2020-05-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Moving to mutter. Because the cursor doesn't have the stutter and that's
moved by Xorg. The rest of the screen is rendered by mutter.

** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => mutter (Ubuntu)

If it helps rule out anything, I've observed the issue as far back as 5.3.0-19,
and the mesa folks have been chasing it since December 2019:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/issues/2026

I'm able to reproduce this pretty reliably by generating a lot of text
in either gnome terminal or a Jetbrains IDE and scrolling up and down
through it.

The workaround in #82 helps with Jetbrains, and oibaf's ppa's mesa with
KMS seems to make gnome terminal happy.

Removing either lets me test this out. Still happy to test any proposed
kernels :)

build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/evolution-data-server/3.36.2-0ubuntu1 in a few hours, and then in the
-proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See

to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)

[Bug 1846443] Re: Moving window buttons to the left breaks gnome-tweaks

2020-05-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'm not sure how many of these issues should be grouped together but the
upstream bug list also has a number of them:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-tweaks/-/issues/236
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-tweaks/-/issues/245
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-tweaks/-/issues/289

Sounds like we need to wait for the outstanding fixes to land and then
separate whichever issues (if any) are still not fixed.

[Bug 1876076] Re: SRU the current 3.36.2 stable update

2020-05-05 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello Sebastien, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-desktop3 into focal-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
desktop3/3.36.2-0ubuntu1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

[Bug 1874519] Re: ZFS installation on Raspberry Pi is problematic

2020-05-05 Thread satmandu
Maybe it makes sense to create a virtual package dependency which can
pull in zfs-dkms for the non-arm64 architectures which get zfsutils-
linux installed?

For instance aufs-dkms is a virtual package which is satisfied by the
official kernel packages.

Glad to hear you guys are in good shape.

Being partially blind and fine motor impaired, "Disable zoom"

(I'm actually not kidding. Key chorded zoom is how I can actually make
