[Bug 1883040] Re: groovy daily won't boot anymore on some older BIOS boxes

2020-06-10 Thread Chris Guiver
A thought: on Friday/Saturday/Sunday (5-7 June) testing of Lubuntu, I
won't have used the d755 that fails to boot now, in fact may not have
used either box

(to open all menu programs in 'live' testing, it's faster on keyboards
that have a super key; those boxes share a 1980s ibm model m keyboard.
The dc7700 does have it's second (newer) keyboard plugged in so may have
used that box one day but may not have)

[Bug 1882415] Re: artifact in top-right corner

2020-06-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Rather than being a graphics driver problem it looks like it could be
caused by one of the extensions:

  'system_moni...@bghome.gmail.com',
  'clipboard-indica...@tudmotu.com',
  'topic...@phocean.net'

Please disable/uninstall those and retest.

And no, @Dimitri, reordering SUPPORTED (from glibc) is probably not a
reasonable approach. There is a need for some kind of hard coded
mapping.

[Bug 1883040] Re: groovy daily won't boot anymore on some older BIOS boxes

2020-06-10 Thread Chris Guiver
syslinux will be wrong package then, sorry.
I don't understand boot process so can't help with cause.

(my focusing on a `calamares` issue on the d755 that didn't have this
issue also means I've favored that box in hopes to gain more detail on
lubuntu's calamares issue, but do regularly use dc7700 for QA full disk
installs)

Will grab *focal* and test that as I'm able (I'm assuming flavor
doesn't matter, I had failures with same boxes with lubuntu -

[Bug 1872186] Re: Country base system Locales is wrong

2020-06-10 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
That's interesting, @kokoye2007. It seems like this has already been
carefully considered.

Maybe worth mentioning that there is a parallel in form of the file
/usr/share/language-tools/main-countries (belonging to accountsservice)
which is used to be able to pick the main locale out from the pure
language code. So

$ /usr/share/language-tools/language2locale en
en_US.UTF-8
$ /usr/share/language-tools/language2locale fr
fr_FR.UTF-8

(That is run on 'locale -a' output, though, but same idea.)

Re: [Bug 1883040] [NEW] groovy daily won't boot anymore on BIOS boxes

2020-06-10 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
We have recently upgraded the xorrisso utility that is used to produce the
images on the host that builds images.

We are also planning to switch the bootloader on the images from syslinux
to grub.

I wonder if this is related to the switch.

For comparison purposes, does the daily focal images boot for you?

syslinux hasn't changed since 2020-04-24 so is unlikely to be the
culprit. Actually I can't see any candidate that has changed recently.

[Bug 1883040] Re: groovy daily won't boot anymore on some older BIOS boxes

2020-06-10 Thread Chris Guiver
For ~exact dating on when this issue occurs - look at my Lubuntu daily
testing...

Lubuntu daily boots on hp8200 (the same thumb-drive that I mentioned
failing earlier as it no longer boots on hp dc7700 which is a box I very
regularly re-wipe with QA-test installs). Of late I've favored the
d755 that still boots (it has an issue with calamares.) but my
iso.qa.ubuntu.com logs should I'd hope show when this issue first
appeared by scanning my lubuntu testing.

(PS: if you have a job I can use to copy text from my searches, I'd love
it - forum question hasn't got any answers on how to... I'm not a python
coder)

+ subset of BIOS boxes. I had a fail & pass with two d755s (identical
+ boxes but different motherboards; worked on one without PS2
+ mouse/keyboard ports)

  ** Background (timing)

On Sunday Morning 7-June I zsync'd the lubuntu daily & wrote to media to
continue testing of our updated LXQt (0.15.0) without issue (AEST or my
  local Melbourne time)

That night I grabbed ubuntu-studio, ubuntu, xubuntu, kubuntu (& tried to
grab ubuntu-mate but it's not available yet) and was unable to get these
to boot I may not have tried all or in many combinations - just gave
them all up as problematic. I also deleted all entries I'd started on
- iso.qa.ubuntu.com (assuming bad media)
+ iso.qa.ubuntu.com (assuming bad media). Note I would have used the
+ failed boxes as they're on the same desk as my primary box.

Last night (Wednesday 10 June) I grabbed all again, wrote to media
again, and tried booting & failed. ISO was tried on four different
thumb-drives, using two boxes to write the media. It failed to boot on
multiple tried boxes (HP, DELL.. all BIOS). Also the Lubuntu was
updated (zsync) & written and it won't boot either anymore.

Most hardware I test on is old/BIOS boxes. Just now I re-tried a thumb-
drive on this newer UEFI and it boots here - ie. issue appears to impact
only BIOS boxes (c2d, c2q etc)

Note: I also have loads of issues with thumb-drive (worn out maybe?)
which is why I deleted my iso.qa.ubu entries, and didn't raise this till
today. 3 thumb-drives were purchased this year, 2 have never given me
  issues.

Last night (Wednesday 10 June) I grabbed all again, wrote to media

[Bug 1883040] Re: groovy daily won't boot anymore on BIOS boxes

2020-06-10 Thread Chris Guiver
** Description changed:

  ** Synopsis

I haven't been able to get ISOs to boot on older BIOS based boxes since
late Sunday (7-June). Examples are Ubuntu, Ubuntu-Studio, Kubuntu,
Xubuntu and since then Lubuntu too.

- NOTE:
-
- This `ubuntu-bug` report was filed on the only box that booted, and
- didn't have an issue, so details of box are NOT the problem.
+ NOTE: This `ubuntu-bug` report was filed on the only box (I'd noted a
+ the time) that booted, and didn't have an issue, so details of box are
+ NOT the problem.

On boxes that have the issue boot stops at

"unable to find medium container a live file system
Attempt interactive netboot from a URL?"
+
+ (no squashfs check on plymouth type display is seen)
+
+
+ ** Addendum - It's not impacting all BIOS boxes either
+ FAILED to boot are
+ - hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)
+ - dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)
+
+ But boxes that boot are
+ + dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e8300, 8gb, amd/ati radeon rv610/radeon hd2400
pro/xt)
+ + dell [optiplex] 780 (c2q-q9400, 4gb, amd/ati cedar radeon hd
5000/6000/7350/8350)
+ + hp 8200 elite sff (i5-2400, 8gb, nvidia quadro 600)
+
+
+ It APPEARS the boxes that boot are newer; I had a fail & pass with a d755
that have identical boxes but have different motherboards (no PS2

[Bug 1284348] [NEW] Worker engine should not be testing against LOG calls

2020-06-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The worker engine right now has unittests that check whether LOG (warn,
exception, error) functions are called and associates these calls with
whether a test passes or fails. This binds unittests to logging in a
very unnatural way; LOG calls are changed to easily and to often and
should not be depended on for failing/passing unit tests. An alternate
mechanism checking against exceptions being raised, functions being
called (*or other*) would be much more appropriate.

[Bug 1883041] [NEW] libpam-cgfs fails to create freezer cgroup writable by user

2020-06-10 Thread James Tocknell
Public bug reported:

This is on 16.04.6.

It appears that on some systems, libpam-cgfs doesn't set the correct cgroup
information, which prevents containers from starting. This can be seen by
looking at the contents of /proc/self/cgroup, which in my case was:
blkio:/user.slice
cpu,cpuacct:/user.slice
cpuset:/
devices:/user.slice
freezer:/
hugetlb:/
memory:/user.slice
name=systemd:/user.slice/user-18160.slice/session-12214.scope
net_cls,net_prio:/
perf_event:/
pids:/user.slice/user-18160.slice

whereas it should have instead of freezer:/ freezer:/user//0

[Bug 1882353] Re: Ubuntu Dock and Top bar accessible from lockscreen

2020-06-10 Thread Daniel van Vugt
There's a discrepancy between the screenshot in comment #1 and that in
comment #3. The screenshot in comment #1 shows extensions clearly
running, and the screenshot in comment #3 suggests there are none.

After you have disabled all extensions, please:

1. Log out and in again.

2. Tell us if the bug still happens.

3. Provide a new screenshot of the whole desktop.

4. Run this command:

   gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.shell > settings.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

1. That is bug 1832407 you are describing. Although you don't actually
need to be able to remove the extension package in order to replace it.
Installing any extension locally for your own account will override the
system version.

2. Canonical does contribute to desktop-icons when we have time.

[Bug 1883035] [NEW] Am trying to install ubuntu bootloader to my windows 7 EFI partition and grub doesn; t complete

2020-06-10 Thread SpiritWarrior
Public bug reported:

When I first ran the upgrade process I was able to upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04,
but there was no longer a boot for ubuntu. I have been working this upgrade for
days on my main pc, 16 gigs RAM, 8 gig graphics, many hard drives, Windows
bootloader on sda but the side by side boot for ubuntu won't work. I've had
successful dual boot uefi windows 7 / ubuntu 14.04 then 16.04 was a little
problematic. But now the ubuntu EFI is thrashed ... until now, I could still
boot into windows 7. I used the MBR EFi scheme for the CD image for booting
because no other method worked. Now I can only run from the ubuntu 20.04 thumb
drive with Casper.
Help!

I see four versions on your webpage:

two versions of 3.20200609.0ubuntu0.16.04.1
and two versions of 3.20200609.0ubuntu0.16.04.0.

I downloaded all four and both versions of 3.20200609.0ubuntu0.16.04.1
compared without any differences AND both versions of
3.20200609.0ubuntu0.16.04.0 compared without any differences. So in
spite of the statement on the web page that each of those versions had a
different publishing time, the two versions of .1 seem to be the same
and the two versions of .0 seem to be the same.

So I tried BOTH versions and warm reboots DID work with either .0 or .1.

I left my machine with 3.20200609.0ubuntu0.16.04.1

Let me know if I missed any version you wished me to test...

Previous bug #1866044 reports being fixed in 3.36.0-2ubuntu1

I'm seeing crashes during lock screen with 3.36.1-5ubuntu2 often it's
returning from suspend, but not sure if this is the only trigger.

after unlock, I see some window manager crash artifacts (weird window

[Bug 1883030] [NEW] Upgrade to stable version 1.51.2 for compatibility with other platforms

2020-06-10 Thread Elliott Rezny
Public bug reported:

Upstream released version 2.51.2 Jan 27th 2018. The version included in
ubuntu right now, 2.48.4, is incompatible with the current stable
version.

https://github.com/bcpierce00/unison/releases

People are reporting the incompatibility issue to the upstream
maintainer and are having a difficult time manually installing it.

https://github.com/bcpierce00/unison/issues/200

Providing a way to upgrade the package with apt would resolve these
issues more easily.

[Bug 1436640] Re: gnome-keyring chews CPU and disk for 40 seconds on chrome startup

2020-06-10 Thread Paul White
This issue has sat incomplete for more than two years now without any
response and didn't expire due to a bug watch. This bug report only
refers to Ubuntu releases that are now "End of life" so I'm going to
close this as "Invalid".

Please feel free to re-open this bug report if this is still an issue
using a currently supported release of Ubuntu.

[Bug 1883000] Re: screengrab window remain open, without icon in launcher, hence impossible to find

2020-06-10 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

You tagged `screengrab` which is used by Lubuntu's LXDE desktop. However
Lubuntu 16.04 LTS is now EOL/end-of-life, as being a flavor it had only
three years of supported life.

This package as such won't be fixed, however I also wonder if you've
tagged the wrong package, as the Ubuntu desktop (Unity or
https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/ubuntu-desktop) used `gnome-
screenshot` (https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/gnome-screenshot) which
still is a supported package.

I'll mark this bug as incomplete, as it's marked against an unsupported
package, if however you believe I'm in error (or intended to mark it
against gnome-screenshot), feel free to leave comment, change package
and then return the status (near top of page) to "New".

[Bug 1858810] Re: [19.10] Boot hangs at "loading initial ramdisk"

2020-06-10 Thread Henrique de Moraes Holschuh
Arnaud, there were some revisions of that security update. Could you
retry with the newest? If it still hangs, please check if one of the
open bug reports matches your processor model and report there.

Otherwise, please open a new report and add your processor model to the
bug title, and in the bug report contents, please be sure to incude the
output of "/usr/sbin/iucode_tool -Sv" as well as the contents of
/proc/cpuinfo.

Thank you!

[Bug 1883028] [NEW] Bluetooth devices don't reconnect after sleep.

2020-06-10 Thread Adam Cz
Public bug reported:

Bluetooth devices don't reconnect after sleep. Includes BT audio
receiver and BT Keyboard. One way to repro is to switch BT pairing on
multi-pairing keyboard, then switch back to Ubuntu. The BT connection
state will be very confused, keyboard will not work.

Another way to repro is to get a bluetooth receiver, pair it. Let the BT
device (or PC?) sleep... now wake up the system. The audio will not
play. BT UI slider says disconnected. If you click the slider it will
go back to off. If you click it quickly >25 times, no joke, it will
reconnect and work.

FYI: Raspbian handles the keyboard fine, have not tested the audio.

[Bug 1435695] Re: intel-microcode could use better docs about upstream versions per CPU

2020-06-10 Thread Henrique de Moraes Holschuh
~ Two years later... :-)

Intel does not keep their microcode guidance docs up-to-date, a new one
is issued when they deem it necessary, and they're related to a specific
issue being addressed.

The processor specification updates are still as opaque as always, and
are slowly getting even harder to locate. They're also not necessarily
synchronized with the availability of public microcode updates
addressing public errata.

We include the Intel release notes in the package, as well as our own
changelog of the contents.

[Bug 1882992] Re: Upon update te 5.4.0-37-generic, boot hangs with black screen

2020-06-10 Thread Albi
Also affected on Desktop. (Threadripper 3970X, 5700XT)

Solution:
1) Disconnect all monitors but one before turning on the computer.
2) Disconnect all monitors but one while experiencing the black screen. Then i
get to the desktop.

Reconnecting monitors after boot crashes the system.
So i am stuck at single-monitor use...

Please give instruction on how to give more technical details, if required.

[Bug 1882626] Re: libceres-dev Focal arm64 build failing with failed test

2020-06-10 Thread Kyle Fazzari
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]

+ Focal
+
+ * tests seem to be failing on arm64:
  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ceres-
  solver/1.14.0-4ubuntu1/+build/19091179

- Trying to install libceres-dev after upgrading system from Bionic to
- Focal, but the arm64 build is failing
+ * libceres is critical for robotics SLAM applications on Ubuntu, and
+ arm64 is a very popular architecture for robotics

- I have also reported here https://github.com/ceres-solver/ceres-
- solver/issues/599 - but not sure which is more appropriate (I don't know
- if that GitHub project maintains the debian packaging builds)
+ [Test Case]

- It appears to be a single test failure that blocks the build
+ * Simply run the existing test cases on arm64 and you'll see
+ evaluation_callback_test fail just like in the above log

- ```
- 99% tests passed, 1 tests failed out of 127
+ [Regression Potential]

- Total Test time (real) = 267.25 sec
+ * libceres isn't on arm64 at all, so the regression potential there is
+ nil

- The following tests FAILED:
-30 - evaluation_callback_test (Failed)
- ```
+ * This is a test-only change, thus the only regression possible on other
+ architectures is that the tests don't pass and the package doesn't build

[Bug 1883025] [NEW] davfs2 unable to unmount: segfault error 4 in libc.so

2020-06-10 Thread Sascha Möritz

I am getting segfaults everytime I want to unmount my webdav online-

Hardware failure is impossible as I see - because error already reported on

ubuntu repos ?) :)

[Bug 1882671] Re: qemu-system-x86_64 (ver 4.2) stuck at boot with OVMF bios

2020-06-10 Thread Laszlo Ersek (Red Hat)
Hi Vlad,

the ipxe-qemu package in Ubuntu (1.0.0+git-20190109.133f4c4-0ubuntu3) is
built with DOWNLOAD_PROTO_HTTPS enabled (in "src/config/general.h").
According to the Ubuntu changelog, this is a new feature added in
"1.0.0+git-20190109.133f4c4-0ubuntu1".

With DOWNLOAD_PROTO_HTTPS enabled, I can reproduce the issue locally,
with iPXE built from source at git commit 133f4c4 (which you report the
issue for), and also at current iPXE master (9ee70fb95bc2).

The issue does not reproduce (with DOWNLOAD_PROTO_HTTPS enabled) at
commit fbe8c52d. This suggests the problem should be bisectable.

If I disable DOWNLOAD_PROTO_HTTPS, then the problem goes away even at
133f4c4 (i.e., the issue is masked).

I've used current edk2 master to test with (14c7ed8b51f6).

Viewed at 133f4c4:

The DOWNLOAD_PROTO_HTTPS feature test macro seems to result in iPXE
attempting to gather entropy. (Likely for setting up TLS connections.)
For entropy gathering, iPXE seems to use an EFI timer, and to measure
jitter across one timer tick. In this, iPXE plays some tricks with the
UEFI TPL (Task Priority Level).

In general, iPXE seems to want to run at TPL_CALLBACK most of the time,
to mask the timer interrupt in most code locations, and drops down to
TPL_APPLICATION only when it actively wants a timer callback (for the
jitter collection, see above).

When the iPXE driver is launched, the StartImage() UEFI boot service
takes a note of the current TPL. It is TPL_APPLICATION (value 4). Then
iPXE seems to perform the above trickery with TPL_CALLBACK & entropy
collection. Finally, after installing EfiDriverBindingProtocol and
EfiComponentName2Protocol, the iPXE driver exits (as expected from a
UEFI driver model driver -- the entry point function is only supposed to
perform some setup steps & install some protocol interfaces). At this
point, StartImage() verifies whether the TPL has been restored to the
same as it was before launching the driver.

Unfortunately, something about the TPL manipulations in iPXE is
unbalanced, because I see the following TPL changes:

- raise: APPLICATION (4) -> CALLBACK (8)
- raise: CALLBACK (8) -> NOTIFY (16)
- raise: NOTIFY (16) -> NOTIFY (16)
- restore: NOTIFY (16) -> NOTIFY (16)
- restore: NOTIFY (16) -> CALLBACK (8)

Note that the final "restore: CALLBACK (8) -> APPLICATION (4)"
transition is missing, before iPXE exits. This is what StartImage()
catches and reports with the failed ASSERT().

So, as I mentioned, the problem is bisectable. Here's the bisection log:

> git bisect start
> # bad: [9ee70fb95bc266885ff88be228b044a2bb226eeb] [efi] Attempt to

The bisection fingers d8c500b7945e ("[efi] Drop to TPL_APPLICATION when
gathering entropy", 2018-03-12) as first bad commit.

Feel free to report this problem on the upstream iPXE mailing list.

Regarding Ubuntu downstream, you should be able to work around this
issue by #undef-ing DOWNLOAD_PROTO_HTTPS again, in
"src/config/general.h" -- *minimally* in the CONFIG=qemu build(s). That
is, in the ipxe-qemu subpackage.

That's because in a CONFIG=qemu build, you totally don't need (or even
*use*) the iPXE HTTPS infrastructure (the entropy gathering that trips
the ASSERT seems spurious to me, with CONFIG=qemu). With CONFIG=qemu,
iPXE provides the UEFI SNP (Simple Network Protocol) interface on top of
the e1000 NIC, and the crypto stuff (if any) is done by the platform
firmware (edk2 / OVMF).
