[Bug 1851518] Re: [950SBE/951SBE, Realtek ALC298, Speaker, Internal] No sound on internal speakers, very very quiet on headphones

2020-08-13 Thread gannon1
@PowerKiKi @John Hoff Does Early Patching as described above by
ironincoder fix the problem?

If it does, and you post your alsa_info.sh output, I can submit a kernel
patch for you. I did so just now for a user named terrydrever who has a
Samsung Galaxy Flex Book (NT950QCG-X716) and confirmed that Early
Patching fixed the bug. See
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=207423 for terrydrever's
comments. Here's the patch
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment.cgi?id=290897.*

*This patch will not fix your laptop. The patch tells the driver,
snd_hda_intel, to apply the fix if it sees Subsystem Id 0x144dc189,
which uniquely identifies the Flex Book. The driver also applys the fix
for 3 other Subsystem Ids, see
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c#L7689-L7692.

Thanks for fixing it @mruffell!

Yes, we did have KSM enabled on the hypervisor where we hit this issue.

[Bug 1769236] Re: CPU frequency stuck at minimum value

2020-08-13 Thread Maarten van Dootingh
I can confirm this bug is still there in Ubuntu 20.04 (and from what i
did find it already exists at least 13 years!). I think this should get
some priority.

I have a Dell XPS13 for 1.5 year now and this haunted me ever since.
I recently discovered that i can restore normal operation by temporary
unplugging the external power a few times. About 1 in 4 times normal operation
is restored.
I check this using cpufreq-info | grep MHz

[Bug 1837810] Re: KVM: Fix zero_page reference counter overflow when using KSM on KVM compute host

2020-08-13 Thread Matthew Ruffell
** Summary changed:

- qemu instance gets paused with error: kvm run failed Bad address
+ KVM: Fix zero_page reference counter overflow when using KSM on KVM compute
host

** Description changed:

- We are occasionally running into the below qemu error on our Ubuntu16
- KVM hypervisors managed using Openstack, where the qemu guest instance
- gets paused unexpectedly.
-
- pooja@kvm14:~$ sudo cat
/var/log/libvirt/qemu/f8a20654-4c96-4446-95b3-24b8d28fab7f.log.1
+ BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1837810
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ We are seeing a problem on OpenStack compute nodes, and KVM hosts, where
+ a kernel oops is generated, and all running KVM machines are placed into
+ the pause state.
+
+ This is caused by the kernel's reserved zero_page reference counter
+ overflowing from a positive number to a negative number, and hitting a
+ (WARN_ON_ONCE(page_ref_count(page) <= 0)) condition in try_get_page().
+
+ This only happens if the machine has Kernel Samepage Mapping (KSM)
+ enabled, with "use_zero_pages" turned on. Each time a new VM starts and
+ the kernel does a KSM merge run during a EPT violation, the reference
+ counter for the zero_page is incremented in try_async_pf() and never
+ decremented. Eventually, the reference counter will overflow, causing
+ the KVM subsystem to fail.
+
+ Syslog:
+ error : qemuMonitorJSONCheckError:392 : internal error: unable to execute
QEMU command 'cont': Resetting the Virtual Machine is required

[Bug 1847712] Re: Desktop icons vanishing when in Activities Overview is jarring and looks ugly

2020-08-13 Thread Daniel van Vugt
For patching into Ubuntu I think we should still use:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/merge_requests/1395.patch

It's only closed upstream because they want a different design. But that
will not be as simple and reliable as the above patch, which should also
be backportable.

[Bug 1891579] [NEW] Security enhanced Ubuntu distribution that would maintain system integrity.

2020-08-13 Thread Clinton H
Public bug reported:

A user account allows a user to do restricted tasks. An admin account
gives a user full control of the system. If the admin has full control
of the system, the admin could cause unintentional damage. The admin
should not be allowed to damage the system. A user could be tricked into
revealing their admin password. There could be a new user called System,
that would not be accessible to the Admin. The System account would have
no login. The System account would protect the system from being
damaged.

[Bug 1891573] [NEW] ristretto can't open image file from trash

2020-08-13 Thread Avinash Sonawane
Public bug reported:

Hello!

I'm using ristretto 0.10.0 on ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS.

Whenever I try to open image file from trash in ristretto, it doesn't
display the said file and instead displays the blank ristretto window.

Gnome image viewer (eog) can open image file from trash without any
issue.

Thanks!

[Bug 1890998] Re: Cant login in to system

2020-08-13 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks.

It sounds like there's an invalid Xorg config file on your system with
lots of:

  Option "_source" "server/udev"

and

  Option "_source" "_driver/libinput"

That may be why Xorg is exiting immediately. If you can find the config
file that contains those then please move it elsewhere, and/or attach it
here.

2020-08-13 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please remove pulseaudio_13.99.1-1ubuntu9.debdiff from comment #3
because that version already exists. And create a new version
13.99.1-1ubuntu10 rebased on:

[Bug 1891272] Re: Ubuntu settings is still reporting 3.36.3 after update?

2020-08-13 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I think it would be more sensible for the GUI to just show "3.36".
Because the third component is different for different GNOME packages.
It doesn't make sense to declare the whole system is "3.36.3" or
"3.36.4".

[Bug 1890863] Re: [amdgpu] Display does not come on after suspend

2020-08-13 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Can you please try again on kernel 5.8 and gather another log?

The problem with the log in comment #6 is that it ends too early -- when
the system suspends. And doesn't show anything about trying to resume
from suspend. This is a common issue with these kinds of bugs. To make
it more likely that a complete log is written please hit these keys
after resuming from suspend (when the display isn't coming on):

  Alt + SysRq + S

and then reboot. Or you can do it all in one:

  (Holding Alt+SysRq) R,E,I,S,U,B

[Bug 1856608] Re: [Regression] usb usb2-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?

2020-08-13 Thread Matthew Ruffell
@jeremyn54

Thanks for testing the test kernel. I suppose this means that "usb:
handle warm-reset port requests on hub resume" is still causing us
trouble.

@everyone

Can you please unplug all USB devices from your computer, and connect
them one by one until you find the device which causes the "usb
usb2-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?" in dmesg?

When you find the device which is causing problems, can you write back with
1) What it is: Manufacturer, Make, Model etc.
2) The output the kernel has for it in demsg when you plug it in.

E.g. The device which started this whole thing:
https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-usb/msg175832.html

Sandisk Ultra T C.
[1.868336] usb 3-3: New USB device found, idVendor=0781, idProduct=5596,
bcdDevice= 1.00
[1.868337] usb 3-3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[1.868338] usb 3-3: Product: Ultra T C
[1.868339] usb 3-3: Manufacturer: SanDisk
[1.868340] usb 3-3: SerialNumber: 4C530001090830111403

The above device is an example of a device that only works when "usb:
handle warm-reset port requests on hub resume" is applied, and is the
reason for the commit to exist in the first place.

We want to collect a list of devices that now fail to work when "usb:
handle warm-reset port requests on hub resume" has been applied.

We will take the list of devices that fail, and write to the USB
maintainer on linux-usb mailing list and see what we can do to fix
things.

As a final note, if you can, please change out any USB cables for
different ones, since they may be broken or not spec complaint, and
testing with different cables can rule out hardware failures.

Thanks,
Matthew

[Bug 1891567] [NEW] [SRU] ceph_osd crash in _committed_osd_maps when failed to encode first inc map

2020-08-13 Thread Dan Hill
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
Upstream tracker: issue#46443 [0].

The ceph-osd service can crash when processing osd map updates.

When the osd encounters a CRC error while processing an incremental map
update, it will request a full map update from its peers. In this code
path, an uninitialized variable was recently introduced and that will
get de-referenced causing a crash.

The uninitialized variable was introduced in nautilus 14.2.10, and
octopus 15.2.1.

[Test Case]
# Inject osd_inject_bad_map_crc_probability = 1
sudo ceph daemon osd.{id} config set osd_inject_bad_map_crc_probability 1

# Trigger some osd map updates by restarting a different osd
sudo systemctl restart osd@{diff-id}

[Other Info]
Upstream has released a fix for this issue in Nautilus 14.2.11. The SRU for
this point release is being tracked by LP: #1891077

Upstream has merged a fix for this issue in Octopus [1], but there is no
current release target. The ceph packages in focal, groovy, and the
ussuri cloud archive are exposed to this critical regression.

[Bug 1891565] [NEW] oss4 does not build on ppc64el on groovy

2020-08-13 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
Public bug reported:

When building the focal version of oss4 with groovy version of binutils,
it fails with:

/tmp/ccoZchTf.s: Assembler messages:
/tmp/ccoZchTf.s: Error: invalid attempt to declare external version name as
default in symbol `.snd_pcm_hw_params_set_rate_near@@ALSA_0.9.0rc4'
make[1]: *** [Makefile:16: pcm.lo] Error 1

Downgrading binutils to 2.34-6ubuntu1 fixes the problem. This works with
gcc-9 9.3.0-10ubuntu2. Upgrading to groovy gcc-9 9.3.0-17ubuntu1 will
force the upgrade of binutils, so can't be tested with the working
version of binutils. Using the latest version of gcc-9 or gcc-10 from
groovy with the broken binutils is still broken, so a complete upgrade
does not fix the problem.

The following diff does fix the problem with binutils 2.35-2ubuntu1, though:

[Bug 1889556] Re: grub-install failure does not fail package upgrade (and does not roll back to matching modules)

2020-08-13 Thread Seth Arnold
Hello halfgaar, our knowledge base article includes some instructions
for Amazon ec2 instances on how to recover from this situation:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/KnowledgeBase/GRUB2SecureBootBypass#Cloud_instances_.28e.g._AWS_EC2.29

If the virtual console support provides a mechanism to supply boot
media, you could boot into a rescue / live environment, chroot into your
existing installation, and run dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc. If the virtual
console support doesn't provide the ability to provide temporary boot
media, then the longer, more complicated, instructions will be required.

Thanks

[Bug 1870314] Re: [needs-packaging] google-guest-agent

2020-08-13 Thread Balint Reczey
Thank you for the review. I'm fixing the config file location typo in
the next upload.

Ubuntu's package installation ensures that modified local configuration files
are not overwritten without consent.
Having an old file in /etc/... triggers the following question which is better
than silently ignoring the newly shipped file, like in upstream's postinst:

Configuration file '/etc/default/instance_configs.cfg'
==> File on system created by you or by a script.
==> File also in package provided by package maintainer.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : start a shell to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** instance_configs.cfg (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?

For installing config files conditionally there is ucf, but it is
overkill here.

[Bug 1891548] Re: autofs-ldap's /etc/ldap/schema/autofs.schema crashes slapd

2020-08-13 Thread msp3k
Attempted to modify /etc/ldap/schema/autofs.scheme to replace
"caseExactMatch" with "caseExactIA5Match". This fixed the problem with
slaptest reporting an error. However, there are other problems that
have arisen that may or may not be related. Attempts to add automount
entries fail for "objectClass: automountMap" with "invalid per syntax"
errors. Neither old, working entries from slapd running on an existing
18.04 server, nor new entries built using /usr/share/doc/autofs-
ldap/examples/ldap-automount-auto.direct as a template, are accepted.

[Bug 1891477] Re: RM wasi-libc - Please rollback wasi-libc to previous version, to make rustc 43 build-depends installable and allow it to migrate

2020-08-13 Thread Steve Langasek
We have never had a policy of requiring build-depends to be satisfiable
for migration, and I'm not sure the existing britney policy is symmetric
- and in any case it makes migrations more brittle. So I'm just going
to override with a force-hint instead.

What is needed for rustc to be buildable with the new wasi-libc?

[Bug 1885186] Re: autopkgtests sometimes timeout

2020-08-13 Thread dann frazier
This build log shows tests running for ~40s:

https://objectstorage.prodstack4-5.canonical.com/v1/AUTH_77e2ada1e7a84929a74ba3b87153c0ac
/autopkgtest-groovy/groovy/armhf/e/edk2/20200807_201106_d36d2@/log.gz

This provides the evidence I was looking for in Comment #6 that the
tests can take longer than 30s and still pass. I therefore think it
worth including this fix in a future SRU.

2020-08-13 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1891548/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[Bug 1803604] Re: [upstream] "Send -> Document as e-mail" in Writer / Calc does not work

2020-08-13 Thread Michael
Changing the email-client to /usr/bin/thunderbird %s solved the problem
for me, can send files from writer.

Not quiet sure if this helps as I'm using debian 10 with libreoffice
6.1.5.2.

[Bug 1870314] Re: [needs-packaging] google-guest-agent

2020-08-13 Thread Liam Hopkins
I have looked at this package on a testing image in GCE. The instance
configs file has been shipped differently in this package vs ours - here
you are shipping it as /etc/defaults/instance_configs.cfg, we ship to
/usr/share/google-guest-agent/instance_configs.cfg

There are two problems with this change. First, the directory is
incorrect and should be /etc/default not /etc/defaults. This will be a
breaking change for new installs and new images. Second, we ship the
file to the /usr/share directory and copy it during new install ONLY if
it doesn't exist. This file may already exist from legacy software and
must not be modified if so.

I found https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zsi/+publishinghistory .
Looks like it was removed due to being an older python2-only package,
see also https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=949164.

** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #949164

[Bug 1890201] Re: Depends on wireguard-modules | wireguard-dkms are inverted

2020-08-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package wireguard - 1.0.20200513-1~16.04.2

---
wireguard (1.0.20200513-1~16.04.2) xenial; urgency=medium

  * Switch alternative dependency order for the wireguard-modules,
wireguard-dkms alternative. Whichever is first is deemed the
preferred installation candidate when neither is present. When this is
wireguard-modules this is satisfied by installation of a random kernel
which claims support for wireguard regardless of its applicability.
Repeat after me, do not ever depend on a kernel. (LP: #1890201)

2020-08-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package wireguard - 1.0.20200513-1~18.04.2

---
wireguard (1.0.20200513-1~18.04.2) bionic; urgency=medium

  * Switch alternative dependency order for the wireguard-modules,
wireguard-dkms alternative. Whichever is first is deemed the
preferred installation candidate when neither is present. When this is
wireguard-modules this is satisfied by installation of a random kernel
which claims support for wireguard regardless of its applicability.
Repeat after me, do not ever depend on a kernel. (LP: #1890201)

[Bug 1891552] [NEW] Segmentation Fault when using regex in (cifs) volume

2020-08-13 Thread Daniel von Obernitz
Public bug reported:

Hello,

there seems to be a bug in libpam-mount in version 2.16-10 used in
Ubuntu 20.04.

I want to mount a cifs volume with a regex condition.

^[a-z]{3}.*$

At system start the system freezes completely. Then I retested during a
running session on the command line and I'm getting the error message

Segmentation fault

when I login to another user.

If I remove the 'regex="yes"' everything works.
If I remove the "and" condition everything works.
If I downgrade the libpam-mount package to version 2.16-3ubuntu0.1 of Ubuntu
18.04 everything works including using the regex condition. In Ubuntu 18.04
everything worked fine as well.

Best regards
Daniel

[Bug 1891551] [NEW] (Ubuntu 16.04) automount 5.1.1 hardcoding libraries

2020-08-13 Thread mj162
Public bug reported:

Unable to use ld.conf methods (LD_LIBRARY_PATH, LD_PRELOAD) to locate
modules.

Context: HP ThinPro 7.1 Service Pack 8 (latest) is still based on Ubuntu 16.04
LTS
Use Case: Thin Client -- HP will not allow Customers to install anything to OS
partition, e.g. to /usr. automount installed from Canonical's repository but to
/usr on a flash drive e.g. /media/GenericFlash_sdb1/usr

the string: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/autofs appears in the binary. automount
does not search /media/GenericFlash_sdb1/usr defined with LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

Source Package:
* http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/a/autofs/autofs_5.1.1.orig.tar.gz
*
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/a/autofs/autofs_5.1.1-1ubuntu3.debian.tar.xz

Release:
Description:ThinPro 7.1.0
Release:7.1.0

Binary Package:
Package: autofs (5.1.1-1ubuntu3) autofs_5.1.1-1ubuntu3_amd64.deb
*
http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/a/autofs/autofs_5.1.1-1ubuntu3_amd64.deb

Expected Behaviour:
Setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/media/GenericFlash_sdb1/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/autofs
overriding compiled location of modules so that automount works correctly.

Actual Behaviour:
automount fails to find its modules:

Code:

# /media/GenericFlash_sdb1/usr/sbin/automount -V

Linux automount version 5.1.1

Directories:
config dir: /etc/default
maps dir: /etc
modules dir:/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/autofs

Compile options:
  ENABLE_FORCED_SHUTDOWN ENABLE_IGNORE_BUSY_MOUNTS WITH_HESIOD
  WITH_LDAP WITH_SASL LIBXML2_WORKAROUND
