I tried both: I removed jackd and deleted my local PulseAudio
configuration and rebooted and the problem is still there.

I remember changing a PulseAudio setting to allow different users on
the same desktop to use sound. I can't remember how I did it, but
could that be a global setting that's causing a problem?

[Bug 1889688] Re: [MIR] nvme-cli

2020-10-19 Thread Steve Beattie
I reviewed nvme-cli 1.12-1ubuntu1 as checked into groovy. This shouldn't be
considered a full audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability.

nvme-cli is a set of command line tools for managing NVMe devices.

- No history of CVEs.
- No init scripts
- Four systemd units, that are used to trigger nvme discovery
- No dbus services.
- No setuid binaries.
- Only binary is /usr/sbin/nvme
- No sudo fragments.
- No polkit files.
- Two udev files, for supporting nvme over fiber channel.
- Unit tests are not run at buld time, due to needing an nvme
  device. No autopkgtests.
- No cron jobs.
- No build errors or warnings.

- Processes spawned?
The micron and wdc plugins unfortunately both use system(), when
collecting log information, but are likely okay as the nvme tool is
  not setuid.
- Memory management in the core looks reasonable, with lots of uses of
asprint(); the plugins tend to do more strcpy() and sprintf()
  operations.
- For file I/O, most of the file operations are performed on the nvme
devices, and some abstraction is provided for that.
- Most logging is done through stderr, via perror or using strerror()m
  and loks okay.
- Only one use of environment variabbles, ok.
- Only privileged function used is ioctl(), and given the purpose of the
  software, expected.
- No apparent use of cryptography.
- No apparent use of tmpfiles.
- Use of networking is for fabric discovery, looks ok.
- No use of WebKit
- No use of PolicyKit

Coverity did find several issues, including some resource leaks
(file descriptors and unfreed memory in some situations); however,
a number of issues that Coverity raised were false positives due to
it's lack of understanding of asprintf(3) semantics, and really, seeing
widespread use of asprint() I consider a positive indicator of quality.

Security team ACK for promoting nvme-cli to main.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to

[Bug 1900640] [NEW] Ubuntu 20.04 has no capability of surrounding-text feature

2020-10-19 Thread Nattapong Sirilappanich
Public bug reported:

I recently upgrade my Ubuntu LTS from 18.04 to 20.04.
After the upgrade, I failed to type Thai text with any combining character in
some apps.
The log contains this error message:
`gnome-shell[2076]: (google-chrome-stable:2069): IBUS-WARNING **: 09:07:10.843:
google-chrome-stable has no capability of surrounding-text feature`
`gnome-terminal-[2589]: gnome-terminal-server has no capability of
surrounding-text feature`

Expected behavior: Capable of typing any Thai character in any app.
Actual behavior: Only few apps support typing Thai character, e.g. Firefox,
Gnome Text Editor.

Step to reproduce:
1. Boot up the machine.
2. Open Google Chrome.
3. Switch keyboard layout to `Thai (LibThai)`
4. Type Thai text "กิน" which is equals to following keystroke "dbo" but with
Thai keyboard layout.

Current workaround:
Whenever you want to type Thai switch
1. Open `Gnome Text Editor`
2. Switch keyboard layout to `Thai (LibThai)`
3. Switch to Chrome
4. Type Thai

[Bug 1900466] Re: Xorg freeze

2020-10-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1899019] Re: Typo in UDisks action

2020-10-19 Thread Seth Arnold
Hello Kevin, thanks for the excellent GHSL-2020-161 report. Given that
the polkit rules are intentional, if ancient, and the udisks2 team
doesn't want to treat the symlink finding as a security bug, I'm going
to open this publicly and mark it wontfix, to reflect what's likely
going to happen for our currently released systems.

I do hope upstream handles the symlink discovery eventually but I can
appreciate why they wouldn't want to handle it as a security issue.

Thanks

[Bug 1891929] Re: [MIR] google-guest-agent

2020-10-19 Thread Alex Murray
Regarding the vendored packages, I have updated our CVE tracker to try
and capture as many of these as possible in https://git.launchpad.net
/ubuntu-cve-tracker/commit/?id=e31511491f1d3258c609e449ecab26765ecf0f9f
- this should allow the security team to automatically have CVEs that
are in one of those vendored components be marked against google-guest-
agent as well. This was based on the list in
debian/extra/vendor/modules.txt so assuming that is up-to-date, consider
this an ACK for that addition.

Regarding the unconfined externally-controlled services, this feels like
a primary function of this package from what I can see, so whilst this
is clearly a prime target to attack for remote-code-execution etc, from
a cursory look, I can't see any obvious vulnerabilities in the current
implementation so I don't think it makes sense to NAK this MIR based on
that. I would definitely prefer to see these confined via an AppArmor
profile or similar if possible however I understand that this may not be
achievable.

As such, Security Team ACK (again) for promoting google-guest-agent to
main.

Ok, the problem is recurring again, so I've gathered a backtrace with
that dbgsym package installed, hopefully it provides more insight as to
where things are getting blocked up.

[Bug 1890236] Re: kde partition manager is waiting it appears for /dev/fd0 (no floppy drive)

2020-10-19 Thread Andrius Štikonas
Hmm, so it looks like blockdev --getsize64 /dev/fd0 is taking a long
time.

Can you confirm this without partitionmanager by running

sudo blockdev --getsize64 /dev/fd0

But from dmesg it looks like blockdev just waits for kernel to reply.

[Bug 1900627] [NEW] installing nvidia-cuda-toolkit removes nvidia-driver-455

2020-10-19 Thread Lishai Eitan
Public bug reported:

There seems to be a conflict between (the dependencies of) nvidia-cuda-toolkit
and nvidia-driver-455.
At least one dependency of nvidia-cuda-toolkit has sthe following dependencies:
Package: libnvidia-ml-dev
...
Depends: libnvidia-compute-450 (>= 450) | libnvidia-compute-450-server (>= 450)
| libnvidia-ml.so.1

which  does not satisfy  libnvidia-compute-450 (>= 450).

I tested in a Focal VM. Installed sup-mail 1.0-3~0ubuntu20.04.1 from

I hope this is not too contorted. I tried 3 keys, a RSA 2048
key created in 2012, a DSA 1024 key created in 2007, and a RSA 2048 key
created in 2019. The "Import Key" menu option in Seahorse wont import
either a binary nor an armored (asc) version for any of these keys. For either
key version of any key an error message pops up "The information in this key
has not yet been verified" and underneath the message are the details of the
key. In the upper right corner "Import" appears and clicking on it does
nothing. The key is not imported.

In the file manager window a double click of the asc version of the key
or using the menu choice "Open with Import Key" will import the key. A
message apperars "the key blaa blaa has been imported". And infact it
has. With the binary version of the key "keyfile.pgp" nothing works, no
error message no nothing. This binary version can be imported using a
terminal. As was noted in the other bug report, the sucessfully added
keys are only listed after Seahorse is stopped and restarted.

And finally Seahorse menu option "Export" will only export a binary
version of keys even thought one of the choices is to export the key as
an armored ".asc" version.

I hope this is clear and detailed enough.

Larry

[Bug 1899848] Re: Broken WiFi Install on Ubuntu (MATE) 20.10 for BCM4306 (rev 03)

2020-10-19 Thread Aaron Pickett
I manually installed firmware version 5.100.138 using the b43-fwcutter
tool, and my throughput has returned to normal. I recommend that the b43
installer package default to this firmware for the BCM4306 (rev 03).

I still get the "swiotlb buffer" spamming my logs, but that might have
been happening before.

[Bug 1900057] Re: ThinkPad T400 sleeps immediately after login in Xorg sessions, but not Wayland

2020-10-19 Thread Tim Wetzel
Daniel, please see also bug #1897185. Quite similar. And when I searched
for information on the suspend on login password problem, I also found
#1481442, 1589593, and 1626689 which *may* be related. I see this on
Thinkpad T570 in a mechanical dock with external HDMI display and
external USB keyboard and mouse; laptop is running lid closed. I also
see it intermittently on a T440s, same configuration. On startup in that
mode, as soon as I enter the password at the login, the machine
suspends.

[Bug 1900148] Re: Bugreport on Update 20.04, not possible to update

2020-10-19 Thread Brian Murray
I'm not sure there is an easy way to discover this information but one
way to do it is to look in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ for .list files
associated with at PPA.

You seem to have used a kisak mesa PPA and lutris team PPA at one point
in time.

[Bug 1900617] [NEW] gateway error detail is not passed along in raised exception

2020-10-19 Thread Dan Streetman
Public bug reported:

[impact]

when the gateway reports an error, it is not passed along in the
exception raised by python-etcd3gw

[test case]

TBD

[regression potential]

any regression would likely occur in handling errors sent from the
gateway to python-etcd3gw, or in handling or later processing the
exception(s) generated from the gateway error(s).

[scope]

this is needed for b/f/g which all have the same version of the package

[Bug 1900472] Re: [snap] Mouse pointer scaling issue

2020-10-19 Thread Olivier Tilloy
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1900334 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1900334

In fact this isn't really a regression: when using a cursor theme that
is included in the gtk-common-themes snap (such as Yaru), cursor scaling
works as expected. The scaling issue can be observed with cursor themes
that aren't included in gtk-common-themes (e.g. Whiteglass).

[Bug 1900616] [NEW] Check available space on /boot before kernel installation

2020-10-19 Thread sacharja
Public bug reported:

Hello,

the available space on /boot must be checked before a new kernel is
installed.

Background: update procedure is very stable on Ubuntu, except Kernel upgrades.
Some years ago Ubuntu created the standard /boot & efi system partition with
512Mb each (and I cannot resize the partition easily due to encryption).
This is not sufficient for 4 parallel installed kernels. If there is not enough
space, Discover simply outputs a message like "Firmware was not installed,
press OK". Then Discover completes the upgrade process of all other components
successfully.

On the next reboot, the user is surprised with a Kernel panic error.

Again, there seems to be much effort to make the upgrade procedure
stable and it is, but every few months the complete system break due to
the kernel upgrades and can only be rescued by chrooting into it.

BTW: I know about "Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Kernel-Packages",
but I doubt that the majority of users uses it.

[Bug 1900429] Re: [snap] Unable to access files owned by another user

2020-10-19 Thread Olivier Tilloy
That's the intended behaviour, snapd's sandbox doesn't allow strictly
confined snaps (such as chromium) to access files owned by someone else.

Out of curiosity, what's the use case for files owned by a different
owner in your home directory?
