[Bug 1896578] Re: raid10: Block discard is very slow, causing severe delays for mkfs and fstrim operations
** Description changed: BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1896578 [Impact] Block discard is very slow on Raid10, which causes common use cases which invoke block discard, such as mkfs and fstrim operations, to take a very long time. For example, on a i3.8xlarge instance on AWS, which has 4x 1.9TB NVMe devices which support block discard, a mkfs.xfs operation on Raid 10 takes between 8 to 11 minutes, where the same mkfs.xfs operation on Raid 0, takes 4 seconds. The bigger the devices, the longer it takes. The cause is that Raid10 currently uses a 512k chunk size, and uses this for the discard_max_bytes value.
If we need to discard 1.9TB, the kernel splits the request into millions of 512k bio requests, even if the underlying device supports larger requests. For example, the NVMe devices on i3.8xlarge support 2.2TB of discard at once: $ cat /sys/block/nvme0n1/queue/discard_max_bytes 2199023255040 $ cat /sys/block/nvme0n1/queue/discard_max_hw_bytes 2199023255040 Where the Raid10 md device only supports 512k: $ cat /sys/block/md0/queue/discard_max_bytes 524288 $ cat /sys/block/md0/queue/discard_max_hw_bytes 524288 If we perform a mkfs.xfs operation on the /dev/md array, it takes over 11 minutes and if we examine the stack, it is stuck in blkdev_issue_discard() $ sudo cat /proc/1626/stack [<0>] wait_barrier+0x14c/0x230 [raid10] [<0>] regular_request_wait+0x39/0x150 [raid10] [<0>] raid10_write_request+0x11e/0x850 [raid10] [<0>] raid10_make_request+0xd7/0x150 [raid10] [<0>] md_handle_request+0x123/0x1a0 [<0>] md_submit_bio+0xda/0x120 [<0>] __submit_bio_noacct+0xde/0x320 [<0>] submit_bio_noacct+0x4d/0x90 [<0>] submit_bio+0x4f/0x1b0 [<0>] __blkdev_issue_discard+0x154/0x290 [<0>] blkdev_issue_discard+0x5d/0xc0 [<0>] blk_ioctl_discard+0xc4/0x110 [<0>] blkdev_common_ioctl+0x56c/0x840 [<0>] blkdev_ioctl+0xeb/0x270 [<0>] block_ioctl+0x3d/0x50 [<0>] __x64_sys_ioctl+0x91/0xc0 [<0>] do_syscall_64+0x38/0x90 [<0>] entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x44/0xa9 [Fix] Xiao Ni has developed a patchset which resolves the block discard performance problems. Hours after I posted the bug message, my computer would not boot to the Kubuntu 20.04 o/s. I determined the culprit was the Nvidia software. I attempted to purge the Nvidia drivers via the terminal, but no success. I was then forced to perform a fresh install of Kubuntu. The fresh install succeeded, with the Nouveau driver. I then installed the Nvidia 390 driver package, via the muon package manager. This succeeded, and I am happy to report the Nvidia 390 driver is properly installed and the nvidia-settings app runs properly. I am very reluctant to again attempt the install of the 450 driver package. The days for downtime and frustration to re-install are simply too great. [Bug 1901365] [NEW] package grub-pc 2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.28 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 127
Public bug reported: I have this error and other errors as a result of the loss of my HDMI audio driver from my AMD HD Radeon 6570 video card on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. There are a number of kernels that can't update. I'm stuck with a partial upgrade with many errors all because the HDMI audio driver would not load after unplugging my Cakewalk UA25-EX Sound Card from the USB port.It seems that I have not been able to restore the HDMI audio driver which shows up in constant error messages and is affecting any updates. It also affects the way the video driver loads the desktop. I am curious about how to resolve this problem so that updates can be normal not partials with errors. The name of the video driver that shares the audio driver name is AMD TURKS (DRM 2.43.0 / 4.4.0-173-generic, LLVM 6.0.0). I presume that the HDMI audio is similar Turks/Whistler HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6000 Series]. The Cakewalk UA25-EX USB Audio drivers work perfectly. It is the HDMI Audio driver that is the problem. I was thinking about taking out the video card and booting from on board graphics to reset the hard drive and then putting the video card back in and maybe the HDMI audio will be recognized again but because of all these kernel errors, I'm scared that it might make things worse than before and possibly not boot-able. Does anyone have any suggestions to resolve this problem, restoring the HDMI audio and correcting the broken kernels which are constantly evident any time I try to update the system. I have a Gateway DX4300 computer with 8GB of RAM and a AMD Phenom(tm) 9750 Quad-Core Processor × 4 . The video driver is the AMD TURKS (DRM 2.43.0 / 4.4.0-173-generic, LLVM 6.0.0). The video card is a AMD HD Radeon 6570 video card.I think that the package name is package grub-pc 2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.28. I don't know the version number. [Bug 1901355] [NEW] Groovy: Samba 4.12.5 FTBFS against Ceph 15.2.5
Public bug reported: Samba 4.12.5 as shipped in Groovy FTBFS (specifically amd64, not i386 which builds fine due no Ceph support, other arches untested) against Ceph 15.2.5 also shipped in Groovy, due changes in Ceph > 15.2.3 to cephfs. Samba 4.12.5 was successfully built against Ceph 15.2.3 for Groovy release repos on 2020-09-28 (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/2:4.12.5+dfsg- 3ubuntu4/+build/20085494) and then ceph 15.2.5 was built for Groovy release repos on 2020-10-07 (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ceph/15.2.5-0ubuntu1/+build/20121251). So it seems that no official Ubuntu build of Samba 4.12.5 has yet been attempted against new Ceph 15.2.5, though Samba may well need a security patch or two in the lifetime of the Groovy release (almost a certainty!) so this Samba build failure relative Ceph will need to be resolved one way or another, prior to any such possible security patch of Samba. It seems the Samba waf script (source3/wscript) might need modifications to account for the changes to cephfs? And are the changes to cephfs actually compatible with Samba's current usage or not, ie. does Samba source need to be patched beyond a change to the waf build script(s)? Questions I can't answer, having very little familiarity with the code base of either Samba or Ceph (or with waf). So far I've been unable to find any relevant upstream commits to Samba that account for the changes evident in Ceph 15.2.5 to cephfs. Reason for rebuilding Samba in my PPA is the missing time.h header that results in FTBFS for libsmbclient users (ie. FFmpeg, when smbclient support is explicitly enabled). Might be useful to have Samba in Ubuntu repos officially patched for the time.h header issue too, though maybe that's for another bug report than this one? [Bug 1901344] Re: [SRU Required] Spotify album icon shows optimal CD disk instead of album/cover image
Cinnamon's Patch (Sound Applet) ** Description changed: The Spotify Album Icon in the Sound Applet should show the Album/Song cover of the Spotify song. Instead it shows the default CD icon. According to upstream, the Spotify link has changed. A fix for this (and in the cinnamon-screensaver) is available. An SRU for BOTH PACKAGES, cinnamon, and cinnamon-screensaver in Focal and Groovy is required. (4 projects, 2 packages, 2 versions) - SRU Template/All will be added/improved here: + SRU Template: + [Impact] + + * When users are playing a Song via Spotify: + * Cinnamon Package: In the sound applet, the Spotify album cover should show, but instead the plain 'CD'/Disk icon shows. + * Cinnamon Screensaver Package: On the top left, the song information, including the album cover should show but the album cover doesn't appear. + + [Test Case] + + * Cinnamon Package: Play a song via Spotify and open the Sound applet to see the CD/Disk icon rather than the album. + * Cinnamon Screensaver Package: Play a song via Spotify and lock the screen to see no album on the top left when you unlock when it asks for password input. + + [Regression Potential] + + * Regressions through other Spotify updates, or any link updates (the + main cause of this bug) can cause possible regression. + + * Python is always known for breaking compatibility with plugins and + such; while this is unlikely if it were to happen, it probably shouldn't + happen before the support for Focal/Groovy expires. + + * Physically talking Regression Potential: Very low. I will make sure this is fixed when it + waits in -proposed before it moves officially. + + [Other Info] + + * This package requires a patch for BOTH Focal and Groovy. + * Review the Focal patch first before we move onto the Groovy patch + * Both will be tested. [Bug 1643706] Re: snap apps need to be able to browse outside of user $HOME dir. for Desktop installs
I understand about confinement and how it is an intrinsic part of the `snap` functionality. This means that there are many commonly used programs which should **never** be converted to `snap`-based architecture, because they are often used in cases where confinement is not appropriate. Unfortunately, a number of such programs have already been converted to `snap`. For example ... whether the `snap` developers like it or not, there is lots of legacy software such as `vlc` which is currently used by thousands of people around the world to access files outside of the user's HOME directory parition. For example, on my Ubuntu system, I have mounted a separate `/opt` filesystem upon which media and other files reside. I would have to rebuild my system to create a larger `/home` partition and then move those files somewhere under `/home`, simply to get them to be accessible via `vlc`. And a number of scripts and programs would have to be changed to stop referencing these items via `/opt/...` . The same problem exists for any other `snap`-based program, not just `vlc`. Another example is `chromium`, which is now solely available as a `snap` under the latest versions of Ubuntu. I can no longer use `chromium` to service URL's such as this one: `file:///opt/path/to/something`, given that `/opt` is separately mounted on my system. Again, I would have to restructure my system, simply to get this `snap`-based `chromium` to work like it used to under earlier versions of Ubuntu. Given that confinement is an intrinsic part of `snap`, this means that only a small, carefully selected set of programs should be forced to be installed as `snap` packages under Ubuntu. General purpose software like browsers, media players, file viewers, etc. should never be forced to be `snap` software ... or for those pieces of software, both `snap` and non-`snap` versions should be offered as standard Ubuntu packages. Until or unless there is a way for us users to easily enable `snap` software to access whatever filesystems we choose, I am replacing many `snap`-based modules on my system with non-`snap` counterparts. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1643706 Title: snap apps need to be able to browse outside of user $HOME dir. for Desktop installs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/snapd/+bug/1643706/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1891649] Re: [snap] No separate icon/window tracking for app launchers
I have the same problem. The workaround using "/snap/chromium/current/usr/lib/chromium- browser/chrome" would link to the correct dash icon. But the app- chromium uses the profile path ~/.config/chromium/Default in this case instead ~/snap/chromium/common/chromium/Default. And when I open a link in the app-chromium it opens a new window in the same profile and a new dash icon (WM_CLASS chromium-browser instead of chromium). Hence this is no useable workaround for me. Parameter --profile-directory also does not work - seems like chromium do not want to start a second process with the same profile. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1891649 Title: [snap] No separate icon/window tracking for app launchers To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-browser/+bug/1891649/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1897153] Re: Automount fails due to SSSD config (Groovy Gorilla)
Hi, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. As mentioned, adding the absolut path to my auto.DataVol1 file has fixed the issue for me. I think it would be preferably to add files to nsswitch.conf rather than looking for conf entries in /etc/sssd. For me, the only thing inside /etc/sssd is a /etc/sssd/conf.d directory. Both /etc/sssd & /etc/sssd/conf.d have no configuration files. I susptect that if I were to set-up the new Active Directory login, that /etc/sssd would be populated with the appropriate .conf files however I still suggest just adding a fallback to msswitch would be less invasive. [Bug 1901343] [NEW] timing bug creates interacctions between util-linux utitlities
Public bug reported: This is a creepy bug that seems to disappear under examination. In this case it appears that the bug is a timing bug, and introducing delays makes it go away. I call this sort of thing a "frankenbug" because of creepyness and difficulty diagnosing. It appears to be an interaction between a call to sfdisk(8) and a subsequent call to lsblk(8). I have a test script that displays the bug on my systems under the right circumstances -- in particular, on my core i-7 Dell 990, it shows up when reporting on a USB 3.0 GPT stick, but not when reporting on the boot drive /dev/sda formatted with MBR. This is a much simplified program, derived from a backup utility I've been working on. You can run it with no delays (default) or introduce delays with the -z (sleep 1) switch or the -y (sync) switch. The correct output occurs with the -z switch. In the others, the partition types are not reported. There should be no difference. Example runs: root@giggles:~/bin# bash test.sh sdd label: gpt ptv[@] is "" ftv[@] is "ext4 swap vfat ext4 " root@giggles:~/bin# bash test.sh -z sdd label: gpt ptv[@] is "0fc63daf-8483-4772-8e79-3d69d8477de4 0657fd6d-a4ab-43c4-84e5-0933c84b4f4f 21686148-6449-6e6f-744e-656564454649 c12a7328-f81f-11d2-ba4b-00a0c93ec93b 0fc63daf-8483-4772-8e79-3d69d8477de4 " ftv[@] is "ext4 swap vfat ext4 " ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.04 Package: util-linux 2.34-0.1ubuntu9.1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.4.0-52.57-generic 5.4.65 Uname: Linux 5.4.0-52-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu27.10 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: skip Date: Sat Oct 24 11:50:53 2020 InstallationDate: Installed on 2020-09-19 (35 days ago) InstallationMedia: Xubuntu 20.04 LTS "Focal Fossa" - Release amd64 (20200423) SourcePackage: util-linux UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: util-linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug focal -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1901343 Title: timing bug creates interacctions between util-linux utitlities To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/util-linux/+bug/1901343/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1901294] Re: nouveau timeout and system lockup
** Description changed: After upgrading from 20.04 to 20.10 system is unusable anymore due to GPU issues with nouveau. Same system worked fine on 20.04. Switching to nvidia proprietary driver and Xorg fixes the issue. Symptoms: System starts just fine, but overall UI performance is bad, everything seems slow and CPU usage seems too high even when idle. After a while UI freezes completly. Sometimes it recovers after several minutes, other times it doesn't and system freezes forever, requiring hard reboot. - Setup: Ubuntu 20.10. nouveau. [Bug 1901294] Re: nouveau timeout and system lockup
Tried 5.9.1 mainline kernel and got the same issue. The only difference is Wayland recovered much faster (under 1 min). [Bug 1901340] [NEW] Backup doesn't automatically start when drive is inserted
Public bug reported: I have Deja Dup set up to automatically backup onto a removable drive encrypted with LUKS every day. But I can set it using the coords or HEAD $ xsetwacom --set "Wacom Intuos Pro S Pen stylus" MapToOutput 1920x1080+0+0 or $ xsetwacom --set "Wacom Intuos Pro S Pen stylus" MapToOutput HEAD-0 reference: https://github.com/linuxwacom/xf86-input-wacom/wiki/Dual-and- Multi-Monitor-Set-Up#nvidia-binary-driver -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1901279 Title: map wacom drawing tablet to single monitor doesn't work To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/1901279/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1901335] [NEW] Repository version of Sigil won't run on all Ubuntu 20.04 systems.
Public bug reported: I doubt there's much point in asking a question about this, because a couple of hours searching the Internet turned up nothing on this problem, on launchpad.net or anywhere else. When I try to run Sigil 1.1 installed from the Canonical repository on a Dell Optiplex GX620 running 64 bit Xubuntu 20.04 installed from an iso (because do-release-upgrade failed beyond repair), I get the error message: /usr/local/lib/sigil/sigil: error while loading shared libraries: libpython3.6m.so.1.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory That tells me that libpython3.6m.so.1.0 doesn't exist (which it doesn't), but on a Dell Optiplex 780 on which do-release-upgrade was successful (but only after I completely removed gnuradio and snap), libpython3.6m.so.1.0 also does not exist, but Sigil 1.1 works. I found very few references to libpython3.6m.so.1.0 on the Internet, none relating to Sigil, and none that helped (including one that suggested installing python3-venv, which installed successfully, but told me I needed to install python3-venv when I entered pyvenv --help or python3-venv --help). So I can't tell if this is a bug, or due to a capability missing from the older GX620, or to a forgotten error message being triggered that is no longer valid and therefore tells nothing about the error that triggered it...
