[Bug 1894329] Re: ZFS revert from grub menu not working.

2020-12-05 Thread odelsol
I installed: zfs-initramfs 0.8.4-1ubuntu11.1 amd64 from groovy-proposed
olivier@bison:~$ sudo apt install zfs-initramfs

I created a new snapshot:
olivier@bison:~$ sudo zsysctl state save -s xfer01

I restarted the laptop and did a revert from xfer01, and the boot was successful

I confirm this fixes the issue for groovy

Re: [Bug 1833855] Re: i915: EDID not detected on VGA resulting in low resolution 1024x768

2020-12-05 Thread SatishVSS
I checked with 1920x1080p screen and it is very fine. Abled to display the
resolution. But why it is unable for the 1440x900p.

My monitor is LG-20MP48HB-BB model. I tried with dell FHD mintor at which
it worked fine.

Why the 20.04 LTS is unable to display the desired resolution?
It worked when there is 14.04 and 16.04.

If I set the resolution at 1440x900p some times it is hanging. And some
times it is reverting back to 1024x768.

Please send a patch to my system to make the issue clear.

I will try to boot the 20.10 later. But issue is with my 20.04. So please
solve it.

We have only a few steps to go and need to increase the number of runs to be
sure, so I'll let it run for a while longer.
Also - eventually - I'll re-run what we consider to be the last good, quite a
few times to be sure.

Most likely I'll later today switch and test r10-6822 next.

I then looked into the /etc/postfix/main.cf file and tried to manually

  apt install is ran.

After that I was able to track the issue into the script
"/var/lib/dpkg/info/postfix.postinst" more exactly the sed command in
line 52. It reads the content of the search parameter from
/etc/resolv.conf, and concatenates it with a "." as delimiter with the
hostname, but it doesn't honor the special case of "search ." and
therefore constructs an incorrect myhostname parameter for postfix of
  "cc1a572af0dc..".

I'd propose to remove this resolve.conf lookup entirely so that the package
installation doesn't fail within docker containers...
It is a bad practice in my opinion to overwrite existing config files upon
package installation.
Also I'd suggest not executing postfix after the configuration is written, so
that in case of unforeseen circumstances (like this one) a user can just simply
run a sed against the config file after installing the package.

[Bug 1626689] Re: During boot process, system goes to sleep

2020-12-05 Thread Michal Hagara
Hi,

I've came across this bug report, when dealing with the same problem on
Dell E7450 (pretty much always docked) on kernel 5.9.11.

For anyone who stumbles upon this:

button.lid_init_state=open itself wasn't satisfactory, because it left
my laptop display ON of course, making it the main one. I've took the
naive approach, as my laptop is pretty much docker all the time.

cat /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/10-lid-workaround.sh
#!/usr/bin/bash

display_cnt=$(xrandr | grep -c " connected")
if [ $display_cnt -eq 3 ]; then
  xrandr --output DP1-1 --auto --left-of DP1-2 --output eDP1 --off
fi

which turns the laptop display off after login, while maintaing monitor
arrangemment I want display names might differ in your case.

[Bug 1822937] Re: NVIDIA settings won't write to /etc/xorg

2020-12-05 Thread gui ambros
Same here, with Nvidia 455.45.01 on Ubuntu 20.04. In fact I've been
facing this for years, since 18.04.

The workaround I'm using is to call nvidia-settings via a shell script
in Gnome's Startup Applications.

It's a bit annoying because it only applies after you log in, but has
the additional benefit that you can execute manually if your monitors
get out of sync for some reason (handy if you use a KVM that forces X to
re-detect monitors).

You can save your config via nvidia-settings to a separate location, and
then extract the exact parameters for each monitor. Here's mine:

# monitor-reset.sh:

sh -c 'nvidia-settings --assign XineramaInfoOrder="USB-C-0" --assign
CurrentMetaMode="DP-5: 1920x1200 +0+560, USB-C-0: 2560x1600 +1920+160,
HDMI-0: 1920x1200 +4480+0 {rotation=left}"' > /dev/null 2>&1

I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't work either.

[Bug 1905947] Re: lubuntu hirsute: display configuration doesn't survive logout/reboot

2020-12-05 Thread Chris Guiver
I booted opensuse tumbleweed again, tried again to re-create issue but
failed. (numerous display changes, apply, then logout & login
again.. repeated many times). opensuse is installed on hp8200 which
I've not reported the issue on, but I doubt that's important, it also
has fedora 33 which was impacted, and Lubuntu focal installed too.

another QA-test install of hirsute daily on
- hp dc7700 (c2d-e6320, 5gb, nvidia quadro nvs 290)
post install adjust displays, logout & login again, changed monitor.settings
got lost on re-login as back to defaults.

[Bug 1897185] Re: Laptop docked with lid closed, goes to sleep immediately on login

2020-12-05 Thread Tim Wetzel
Another wrinkle since this week's kernel update in 20.04.1 (from
5.4.0.54.57 to 5.4.0.56.59: on every second or third startup in the
UltraDock and with the external HDMI display as primary (which is where
this suspend on login password problem occurs), the system now goes into
never-never land instead of suspending. The external display stays
active (doesn't go into power standby) but remains black; if I open the
lid of the docked laptop it also usually remains black; the soft reboot
(Alt+Prtscrn followed by REISUB) does nothing; so the only option is a
hard power down.

Wait 10-15 seconds and restart, and it's back to the usual suspend on
entry of the login password.

Please fix again, this bug affects every Ubuntu system here. All
20.04 and ThinkPads from T440 through T480 series; so older to
practically new.

Thanks.

Could you insert some pr_alert code to verify the updated module has
been loaded?

pr_alert("amd_gpio reg_val=%x, pin=%lu (LEVEL_LOW)",
pin_reg, d->hwirq);

You can also use the repo
https://github.com/coiby/standalone_pinctrl_amd/tree/debug_for_Mike.

And after the system getting rebooted, paste the result of `journalctl
-k|grep amd_gpio` here?

[Bug 1906962] [NEW] bug in upgrading to focal fossa

2020-12-05 Thread Marie-Dominique Deshayes-Tabarin
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1894329] Re: ZFS revert from grub menu not working.

2020-12-05 Thread Arvydas Ramanauskas
This fixed the bug for me on 20.10 after I updated relevant zfs packages
to 0.8.4-1ubuntu11.1 from groovy-proposed.

After the update I installed a random package. Tried to revert to the
snapshot created by apt. The package was not on my system. It worked.
Then I reverted back the revert. The package was back on my system.
Everything seems to work now.

Thank you to everyone involved for the fix!

[Bug 1906959] [NEW] `apt purge` does not remove /var/lib/docker

2020-12-05 Thread DarkTrick
Public bug reported:

Preface

- I'm filing this against docker.io, but it might as well be a problem with apt.
- I experienced this with the docker.io package, but I can imagine, that there
are other packages out there, that have exactly the same problem. Please read
this report as an example for a perhaps generic problem.

What happened:
===
- `apt purge docker.io` does not remove docker's file directory
`/var/lib/docker`. Therefore previously used images and other files will be
left on the system. This might be expected using `apt remove`, but `apt purge`
should remove "config files" as well.
- The sysadmin does not get any messages, that there are files left on the
system.

Generic Problem:

apt-get is supposed to manage files on a ubuntu machine. It fails to meet its
goal in this case.

Concrete description:
==
- This might be a difficult case, as docker images can be seen as "user files"
(not config files). It would not be the right thing to remove those files.
- The general user does probably not know about this directory. This is a very
potential file graveyard on the system.
- Upon installing no one tells the admin (in a clear, informative way), that
there will be files create in `/var/lib/docker`. The information is hidden from
the user. In that case, apt should be responsible for doing something about
these files, if they get deleted.

Suggestions / Solution

(I don't have *the* solution for this problem. I guess it's necessary to
discuss what's the right thing to do)

My idea: Put them in $HOME/docker (or similar) instead of
/var/lib/docker. (yes, they might be seen as "system wide user files",
but I think real admins know how they could config paths and change the
location while simple users immediately see that there's a `docker`
folder in their home directory)

[Bug 1906958] [NEW] install crashes when installing boot loader on dual bootsystem

2020-12-05 Thread Richard Antholine
Public bug reported:

I first deleted partitions on 4T HD so I could install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
on its own HD. Tried direct install from CD and crashed when trying to
install boot loader to /dev/nvmeOnp1. I believe this is where the
Windows 10 Home boot resides. It Froze the system and would not quit.
Had to hard power off, power on and rebooted to Windows without problem.
Tried "Try Ubuntu" and using the icon to install. Crashed same place.
Tried again installing, crashed same place but this time it permitted me
to report error. I have used older versions with this Windows 10 Home
with no problems using same hardware.

[Bug 1292398] Re: Second screen position isn't saved from one session to another

2020-12-05 Thread Nemanja V
On Ubuntu 19.10 I'm experiencing the same thing as the comment above:

###
Jan B (hey-e) wrote on 2015-04-08: #143
I have a laptop and a monitor as secondary display
...
Every time I switch back from only using the monitor (laptop display disabled)
to using the laptop display as a second screen – I need to rearrange the
displays. By default they are side-by-side but I always want the monitor above
the laptop display.
###

I don't have Ubuntu 20.x installed at the moment to confirm whether it
happens there, too.

[Bug 1662244] Re: lightdm causes all greeters to fail to start

2020-12-05 Thread Christophe Chisogne
Upgrading to (K)Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS basically broke the system as X was
not restarting correctly (black screen instead of lightdm display or
even infinite loop of X crashes based on BIOS/EFI config).

This is critical for non-savvy users as my parents.

The issue is the same as can be seen in
/var/log/lightdm/seat0-greeter.log with repeated messages like

**MEMORY-ERROR***: unity-greeter[1647]: GSlice: failed to allocate 2040 bytes
(alignment: 2048)...
**MEMORY-ERROR***: unity-greeter[1647]: GSlice: failed to allocate 2040 bytes
(alignment: 2048)...
**MEMORY-ERROR***: unity-greeter[1647]: GSlice: failed to allocate 2040 bytes
(alignment: 2048)...

The workaround is indded updating the memlock limits as described above
(adding the 2 lines of the above comment to /etc/security/limits.con).

Thanks for the workaround :)

[Bug 1878919] Re: kworker/0:1+kacpid uses 100% of one CPU core

2020-12-05 Thread Nuno Filipe Pedro Jacinto
I apologise. I didn't made the time to address this issue properly, but I
wanted to just leave some information in case it helps others.
I did several upgrades of the kernel version (up not down) without success. My
last was 5.8.13, without success.
When I was upgrading to version 20.10, I had to stop the process. This stop
left the system on an intermediate state (just in case this means something to
someone). I restart the process after but the nvidea drivers were not being
loaded (using the 5.8.13 kernel, not the one from 20.10).
Since then, the problem disapear. It has been 3 or 4 weeks whitout any issues.
I'm not saying that it's the graphic card drivers that produced the error.
Since I don't use it, I didn't try yet to fix it and I also wanted to see if it
was really gone (sometimes it happens often others ...).
Just leaving some information in case it helps.

[Bug 1906956] [NEW] Long sink/source names cause unreasonably sized window

2020-12-05 Thread Joe Albert
Public bug reported:

Very long sink/source names, such as those created when using
pulseaudio's module-echo-cancel, force the pavumeter window to be wide
enough to fit the name on a single line (see attached screenshot).

It might be nice to allow the source's name to be wrapped or truncated
so the user can choose a more reasonable window shape.

[Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2020-12-05 Thread Mike Boruta
Hello Coiby,

Hmm, as far as I can tell the proper module is being used since I
executed the same steps for both the 5.7.19 and 5.8 kernels. I also
confirmed this by running `modinfo pinctrl_amd` and verifying that it is
no longer signed. I understand what you are saying regarding 0x51bc8,
maybe a different code path is being executed? Perhaps it would be best
for someone to independently confirm this before digging in further; I
have run through these steps a few times so I don't think I made a silly
mistake but anything is possible.

Seeing the same on a fresh 20.04.1 install with snap Slack and deb

and reopen Vivaldi (`ps aux | grep slack` is empty), it shows up under

Actual usability is not impacted, just a confusing user experience.

It provides safe access to files on your disk to snaps or flatpaks.

Odd, when I tried it didn't work for me, maybe I made a typo.

Added a task for coreutils - we should ignore fuse.portal in any case,
regardless of whether the portal code gets fixed or not, because it's
not a real file system that has an actual size.

[Bug 1906949] [NEW] ext4_find_entry:1531

2020-12-05 Thread Claus Ar.
Public bug reported:

Installed Ubunutu 20.04 on a fresh machine, ASRock b450 Pro4 with a Kingston
A2000 1TB PCI Express 3.0 x4 M.2 2280 in the M.2 Ultra slot. Randomly, got
freezes with only cursor moving on screen and after a few minutes i'd get a
black screen with errors, EXT4-fs error (device nvme0n1p2): _ext4_find_entry:
1531 and Failed to write entry, ignoring: Read-only file system. (attached
photo)
I am a fresh Ubuntu user, not really tech savy, help would be greatly
appreciated.

[Bug 1906913] Re: IRQ conflict between Ethernet and USB with linux 5.4.0-56-lowlatency kernel

2020-12-05 Thread Ross Gammon
And the USB audio device works as well with 5.4.0-57.63 . Marking the
bug as "Fix Released". When this kernel migrates from proposed into the
updates pocket, the bug will be fixed.

It will be necessary to select the 5.4.0-54-lowlatency in the Grub menu
in order to have the internet to be able to update to 5.4.0-57.63.

[Bug 1838151] Re: Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. Missing wide band speech support (Bluetooth A2DP codecs).

2020-12-05 Thread Nikke
It seems that on Ubuntu 20.10 it is fixed by installing pulseaudio-
modules-bt (which also uninstalls pulseaudio-module-bluetooth) from this
ppa: https://launchpad.net/~berglh/+archive/ubuntu/pulseaudio-a2dp

Then:
> sudo systemctl restart pulseaudio
> pulseaudio -k

Did just a few tests with Google Duo with my Jabra Elite Active 65t
buds, and the sound is a LOT better both on my and the other end!

[Bug 1906946] [NEW] please sync rust-signal-hook 0.1.13-1 from sid

2020-12-05 Thread Jan Niehusmann
Public bug reported:

It seems like rust-signal-hook was removed from ubuntu on 2020-09-14
because of a missing dependency, rust-tokio-reactor.

As rust-tokio-reactor 0.1.8-2 was successfully synced from debian on
2020-11-05, rust-signal-hook could be included again, as well.

This would be helpful as it would fix the build of rust-condure, see
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rust-
condure/1.1.0-1/+build/20367268

Thanks!

which efi partitions you wish to use. You can specify more than one and
it then installs to each of them. It remembers the choice next time grub
is updated via apt.

I've just tested this and it works as described.

However, grub-efi-amd64 wasn't installed on my freshly installed 20.04
Ubuntu system.

Installed was grub-efi-amd64-signed.

And 'dpkg-reconfigure grub-efi-amd64-signed' didn't prompt for anything!

So, I installed grub-efi-amd64 and removed grub-efi-amd64-signed for the
test.

I agree, it's an improvement. However, while searching for Ubuntu's
solution to the making-ESP-somehow-redundant problem I couldn't find any
documentation that points to this tooling/approach.

[Bug 1906913] Re: IRQ conflict between Ethernet and USB with linux 5.4.0-56-lowlatency kernel

2020-12-05 Thread Ross Gammon
I have not looked into the reason what happened in 5.4.0-56-lowlatency
kernel to cause the problem, but I can confirm that installing version
5.4.0-57.63 from focal-proposed fixes the problem.

I have my network back! I am yet to test my USB audio card.

Not really fixed, AppStream has an incomplete workaround for the
gobject-introspection bug (which may break at any time for new functions
in either Python or Vala, if we aren't super careful).

[Bug 1906913] Re: IRQ conflict between Ethernet and USB with linux 5.4.0-56-lowlatency kernel

2020-12-05 Thread Oliver K.
It's not just me who reported this. Is also in askubuntu:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1296943/irq-conflict-between-ethernet-
port-and-usb-2-controller-with-linux-5-4-0-56-lowl

Because that has nothing to do with Ubuntu Studio alone. I reported it
here under linux (ubuntu).

For the “Ubuntu Kernel Team” a short question?

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam refers to:

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is in Launchpad as:

https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-kernel-team this is the moderated
public team in which we interact with the Ubuntu Community.

Why is it not possible to report a bug directly to the "Ubuntu Kernel
Team". Even if that's such an old page. why is this not deleted?

[Bug 1906155] Re: USB Passthrough Fails on Start, Needs domain Reset

2020-12-05 Thread Russell Morris
OK, some interesting findings :-). And back to thinking it may be QEMU related?
Let me explain, by all means disagree!
1) I found that using OpenCore with macOS, I no longer need a custom UEFI. So,
I tried the UEFI that comes with Ubuntu (apt install ovmf, copied the files
over). No change. So then, I cloned and built the latest UEFI from Tianocore /
EDK II (https://github.com/tianocore/edk2). Copied that over (and VARS,
default), no delta. And as I can't get into the UEFI menu on VM startup (i.e.
press ESC, F2, etc.) ... seems to be OS independent, just an issue between UEFI
and QEMU - agreed?
2) Figured I'd try to clone, build and run the latest version of QEMU, see if
that is it - FYI, the current version in Ubuntu that I'm running is,
QEMU emulator version 5.0.0 (Debian 1:5.0-5ubuntu9.2)
Copyright (c) 2003-2020 Fabrice Bellard and the QEMU Project developers

OK, that said ... I can build, install => but can't get apparmor to let
me run my custom QEMU executable (arrgh!). I even tried disabling
security_driver (set to "none" in /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf, restarted
libvirtd.service) ... but no joy. Can't get the latest QEMU to run. Any
thoughts here would be appreciated! This is to see if it's an "older"
issue, and may be resolved already.

3) An interesting side note, when I did get into the UEFI menu (post VM
reset), changed the resolution ... I could no longer boot (fully) my
guest OS. Had to reboot my host OS (Ubuntu), then all OK. Very odd, but
an observation :-).

Thanks for all the help!

[Bug 1906913] Re: IRQ conflict between Ethernet and USB with linux 5.4.0-56-lowlatency kernel

2020-12-05 Thread Erich Eickmeyer
As this issue is not specific to Ubuntu Studio, and since this has *not*
been verified by anybody but the bug reporter, I removed Ubuntu Studio
Developers from this bug and changed it to "New".

The lowlatency kernel has many, many more use cases than audio, hence it
is no longer developed or managed by the Ubuntu Studio team. This is an
Ubuntu kernel issue completely, and in no way should the Ubuntu Studio
Development team be involved here as that is too much workload on an
already strained and low-numbered team.
