2021-01-08 Thread psl
I just copy possible implementation of pbcopy and pbpaste for Linux from
#1854092. That issue has more examples of similar commands for
PowerShell, etc

```
#!/bin/sh
# print data from clipboard to stdout, again and again...
MODE="xclip"
#MODE="xsel" # doesn't work well, clipboard is not cleaned and the same text is
printed again and again :-(
pbcopy ()
{
   if [ "$MODE" = "xclip" ]; then
 xclip -selection clip -i
   else
 xsel --clipboard --input
   fi
}
pbpaste ()
{
   if [ "$MODE" = "xclip" ]; then
 xclip -selection clip -o
   else
 xsel --clipboard --output
   fi
}
[Bug 1910836] Re: Left Handed Mouse configuration switching to "Right" on reconnect V20.04
2021-01-08 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.  It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general.  It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it.  You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.
To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1910836/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.
[This is an automated message.  I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]
[Bug 1910555] Re: Driver build error on kernel 5.8, but works on 5.4
2021-01-08 Thread Stephen Gornick
Here are a couple workarounds I've seen:
A.) Uninstall bcmwl and install broadcom-sta packages, if your Broadcom wifi
adapter can use it:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1906745/comments/1
or
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1907445/comments/8
B.) Use patch 6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu7 and purge kernel 5.8. [I don't think
purging 5.8 kernel is something I would do, but wanted to list it as one
workaround.]
[Bug 1910836] [NEW] Left Handed Mouse configuration switching to "Right" on reconnect V20.04
2021-01-08 Thread Kim Tyson
Public bug reported:
Description:Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
Release:20.04
Probably the Kernel
What I expected: I expected the right mouse button to be the primary
What happened instead: The primary button was the left button even
though the mouse configuration showed it to be the right button.  Re-
selecting the right button is only a temporary work-a-round.
This problem is constant and quite annoying and only started happening on a
regular basis after I plugged in a USB game controller pad.  It happened a few
times before that but only after a software update and restart.  Fixing it
after a software update appeared to be permanent until the next update.
After having my Logitech game pad controller F310 plugged in it happens
constantly - even after just leaving the computer unattended for a while.  If I
unplug the game pad the problem persists. Perhaps that will give some
developers a clue as to where the problem occurs.  It may be a multilevel
software thing.  If not, reading my RANT below might elicit a clue as to what
the software is doing wrong.
I have seen other situations where when accessing a desktop from a left
handed remote desktop, the buttons switch to right handed and after
remoting to a third desktop it switches back to left handed etc like it
is a toggle instead of a state.  That is even more annoying if you need
to cut and paste over 3 levels of button switch.  We need an RFC to fix
this in a standard way.
I believe this bug is in many levels of Ubuntu from at least 19.x to the
current 20.04.1 LTS based on what I have seen in the forums.
If I could actually use my right hand - without poking my eyes out - I
would definitely give up being left handed to avoid this issue.  I do
however prefer the pad to stay right handed and changing the mouse
changes the pad in Ubuntu - they should be separately changeable.
Perhaps the gamepad toggles the left right button thing - since it is
set up as left handed as well.
This problem also happens in many game consoles where you can change
some things to left handed but not everything - in the software.
In the 80s, mice had a switch on the bottom - left/right.  Now the
software determines right and left based on which user logs into the
system.  You have to use the mouse to login.  That means it starts off
right, then you login and then it switches to left.  Incredibly stupid
but only left-handers get this.
I do however have a recommendation - to other left handers out there -
since it is what I am going to do from now on - make the solution
hardware.
"Skip the software left handed thing and buy a true left handed mouse
and controller or mod yours to switch".  Don't rely on software for
something so basic and critical.
debhelper (13.3.1ubuntu1) hirsute; urgency=medium
  * Merge with Debian; remaining changes:
- Generate ddebs from debhelper instead of pkg-create-dbgsym:
  + Set DBGSYM_PACKAGE_TYPE to ddeb to get correct debian/files output.
- dh_installchangelogs: Do not install upstream changelog in compat
  level 7 and higher to avoid pointlessly bloating installed packages.
- dh_strip: Strip LTO sections unless --keep-lto is given.
- dh_strip: For a static archive, test if any .text sections are non-empty.
  Error on empty archives.
  * Don't error on empty static archives, just give a warning.
debhelper (13.3.1) unstable; urgency=medium
  * d/control: Bump dependency on dwz to pull newer version of dwz
in buster-backports, which makes backporting easier.  Thanks to
Anthony Fok for the patch and for backporting dwz.
Most GUIs, like MacOS X, Microsoft Windows and Qt handle the keyboard
bindings for its treeviews in the same way: user can easily expand,
collapse and move into tree nodes using only the arrow keys.
In Gtk+, however, is quite different. User needs to press "plus" and "minus"
key to collapse and expand nodes, leaving Right and Left arrows with
essentially null functionality. Well yeah, that keys allow to move horizontally
into row cells.
Seeing many of the applications written using Gtk+, there are not many cases
where user find useful moving horizontally across the row with the keyboard,
most GtkTreeView that I see are simple and used only to show information.
So I guess the current GtkTreeView behaviour is crazy, not useful in most
cases, goes against intuition and against good User Experience.
I'm really not familiar with Gtk+ programming but, as user, I find this
"bug" extremely annoying in my day to day.
So, I make some changes in Gtk+ to enhance (from my point of view) the
behavior of GtkTreeView with the keyboard.
The attached patch to the 3.4 branch modifies the default GtkTreeView behaviour
with the keyboard, expanding nodes with the right arrow and collapsing it with
left arrow, selecting parent and child nodes when appropriate:
 - When user press Left on a collapsed node, Gtk+ select the parent node.
 - When user press right on an expanded node, Gtk+ select the first child node.
Users that want to navigate into cells horizontally (as I can see, a non
frecuent use case) will need to press Ctrl+. Users can still move
to the parent node with the Backspace key, without collapsing anything.
I don't know exactly if this behavior change break some expected
behavior to application programmer, I hope not.
A last question, Why do you implemented the current GtkTreeView behavior
knowing the big difference with other tested GUIs?
Best Regards!
Just to give a little background, this was tried in 2006, see:
  https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=105895#c27
And reverted a year later due to complaints:
[Bug 1841323] Re: mystery message during HDD unlocking
2021-01-08 Thread Nick
Update: Screen boot messages auto-disapppear too fast.
I boot Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS. During the boot process, the black GUI screen
has a rotating icon and an Ubuntu logo.
That screen shows two messages. I guess they're important or Ubuntu
wouldn't show them. They display for only about a quarter of a second
each. One is, I think, 3 lines long. I have no idea what they say.
Make all such messages persist. Align them so they appear in
chronological sequence, the earliest at the top. That should be the
order because we're not likely staring at the screen during the whole
bootup process, so we'll have to catch up.
If there is progress supporting a displayed message so that completion
of progress was causing the message to disappear, with message
persistence add a progress indicator just for the message's cause that
will persist past completion.
2021-01-08 Thread Nathan Spotts
I had the same problem today.  I couldn't even uninstall the original
VirtualBox using apt or the software center.  I had to use:
sudo apt-get purge virtualbox*
and then reinstall the latest virtualbox 6.1.16 from their website.  I
couldn't figure out why Virtualbox worked yesterday and had errors
today.  Hope this helps someone!
I have installed and tested some of the packages on 20.10 and 20.04
On 20.10 I installed
virtualbox-dkms/groovy-proposed
virtualbox-ext-pack/groovy-proposed
virtualbox-qt/groovy-proposed
virtualbox/groovy-proposed
and I could use some previously installed VMs without problems then.
virtualbox-guest-additions-iso/groovy-proposed  was not available yet, I
try to check tht when its in proposed.
On 20.04 I installed
virtualbox-guest-additions-iso/focal-proposed
virtualbox-qt/focal-proposed
virtualbox/focal-proposed
virtualbox-dkms/focal-proposed
and could also use previously installed VMs without problems.
[Bug 1910692] Re: check-language-support wants to install wrong locale packages
2021-01-08 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I think it works as expected. If you run check-language-support without
options, it lists uninstalled language support for all languages on the
system, which approximately is the output of this command:
ls /usr/share/locale-langpack
So if you have Russian as display language, and want to install Russian
language support only, this command should do it:
sudo apt install $(check-language-support -l ru)
Please let me know if that explains it.
It looks like the gnome-3-28-1804 and gtk-common-themes content snaps
are not installed, this is what is causing chromium to not find
libraries. Those should have been installed automatically when
installing chromium.
How did you install chromium? Could it be that you manually uninstalled
[Bug 1910822] [NEW] Focal update: v5.4.86 upstream stable release
2021-01-08 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:
SRU Justification
Impact:
   The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
   in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
   demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
   by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
   a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
   stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:
[Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails due to useless immediate configuration error when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected
2021-01-08 Thread Julian Andres Klode
** Description changed:
  [Impact]
  Installations that really succeeded would then fail because APT could not
immediately configure a package. Which is a pointless way to fail at that
point, because everything did work out anyway.
- So what we do is change that to a warning.
+ We have two changes that help address this:
+
+ * The first one stops immediately configuring multi-arch siblings (e.g.
+ libc6:i386 when it's configuring libc6:amd64). This was not necessary,
+ and caused all the libc6:i386 failures here.
+
+ * The second change sort of also supersedes the first one: It just
+ ignores any errors from immediate configuration, relying on the fact
+ that it's checked and rectified at a later point if there are
+ unconfigured packages (which is what made all those failures happen
+ spuriously after having successfully installed everything).
  [Test case]
- Not available right now. Issues can flare up and then disappear again.
+ We have one test case in EIPP format in the Debian bug 973305 which was only
helped by the second change, not the first one. Run /usr/lib/apt/planners <
eipp.log and check there are no errors.
+
+ TODO: It's unclear if the APT from proposed installed in the live
+ session will fix the installer, needs investigation, but would make a
+ useful test case.
  [Regression potential]
  It's imaginable that we missed something somewhere and some path that checked
for a set error doesn't check it anymore, and we report success when we hit an
error, but it seems unlikely.
  Behavior of --simulate changes. This used to fail before as well, and
  will now only produce a warning. We don't believe that is a reason of
  concern.
  [Groovy SRU]
  The groovy SRU is a sync of the 2.1.11 micro release from Debian unstable
which also incorporates changes to the documentation: A typo fix, replacing
focal with groovy in examples, and minor Dutch manual pages translation updates.
  We do not have test cases for the documentation changes, and we do not
  consider there to be a huge regression potential. As long as they build,
  they should be readable - maybe some words are wrong in the translation,
  who knows.
  [Original bug report]
  Test Case
  1. Install Ubuntu Desktop on hardware with an nVidia card and select to
install 3rd party drivers
  2. Proceed with installation
[Bug 1901797] Re: The upgrade to 20.10 is not taking place
2021-01-08 Thread Brian Murray
The mirror of the Ubuntu archive which you use does not have information
about the 20.10 release of Ubuntu so the upgrade is failing. You'll need
to switch to a mirror the Ubuntu archive which includes information
about groovy.
http://repos.del.extreme-ix.org/ubuntu/dists/
Additionally, at a cursory glance it seems that the mirror has not been
updated in quite a while so you may be missing various package updates.
Please switch mirrors, update your system, then try the upgrade again.
[Bug 1822394] Re: [Dell BIOSes dated 27 Mar 2019, XPS 9575, Precision 5530 2-in-1] laptop keyboard & touchpad not working at gdm screen after boot
2021-01-08 Thread Philip Genovese
I did some distro hopping with my XPS 15 9575 (BIOS 1.13.0)
Ubuntu 20.04.1 system had the same problem, but I found that the latest
Pop!_OS (20.10) and Manjaro (20.2.1) did not have the issue. This leads
me to believe that the issue was fixed on systems using updated kernels,
such as kernel 5.8.8, but is still present on kernel version 5.8.0-36
that ships with the most up-to-date Ubuntu 20.04.1.
On Ubuntu 20.04.1, I was able to use the workaround found above, by
adding "blacklist intel_vbtn" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and
rebooting
Will possibly looks into whether Ubuntu 20.10 ships with a kernel that
still has this problem
[Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails due to useless immediate configuration error when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected
2021-01-08 Thread Julian Andres Klode
I think we have the final fix now that covers every case and not just
the corner case with libc6:i386. It now just ignores those errors, which
as we can see works out fine in the end, because the failures occur
after installing because the error was never correctly propagated to the
caller.
A later code segment actually checks that everything is configured, so
this is as safe as we can get, and best of all, it can't really regress
stuff, since it does not change the actual ordering :)
