@Fabianbur, 5.8.0-42 was obsoleted by a emergency security fix 5.8.0-43,
and re-landed in 5.8.0-44 that is not yet available publicly. So I think
you don't need to do anything here, but it's still very appreciated if
you'd like to help verifying 5.8.0-44 again.

[Bug 1915240] [NEW] Please remove "quiet splash" from default kernel flags in Ubuntu server

2021-02-09 Thread Jeremy
Public bug reported:

Please remove the "quiet splash" options from the default boot in Ubuntu
server. This is undesirable behaviour for a server as it masks useful
diagnostic output, and even prevents the server booting on some hardware
combinations.

I have discovered that Ubuntu 20.04 fails to boot after a fresh
installation on a Dell PowerEdge R640 in UEFI boot mode. I pinpointed
this to an issue arising when attempting to display the boot splash
screen, and removing the "quiet splash" options from the kernel boot
line in GRUB fix the issue.

Refer https://askubuntu.com/questions/1229910/ubuntu-20-04-black-screen-
after-installing-no-booting for another example.

I'm not actually concerned about the hardware incompatibility in the
case of a server, rather I don't think "quiet splash" is an appropriate
feature for a server and is even potentially detrimental such as in the
example provided above.

[Bug 581796] Re: grub-installer ignores grub2/linux_cmdline_default in preseed

2021-02-09 Thread Jeremy
I can confirm this issue persists in Focal as well. I've run into the
issue described at https://askubuntu.com/questions/1229910/ubuntu-20-04
-black-screen-after-installing-no-booting on Dell PowerEdge R640 series
with Matrox G200 graphics and in UEFI boot mode.

The suggested fix (remove quiet splash boot flags) works, and I've
attempted to preseed this using the following line:

grub-pc grub2/linux_cmdline_default string

This works for the first boot after installation, and I can confirm the
setting with debconf-get-selections.

Unfortunately /etc/default/grub still contains the quiet splash options,
so the next time update-grub is called (e.g. kernel update) the box will
fail to come up on boot unless that file is manually edited first.

Ideally the grub-pc grub2/linux_cmdline_default option would ensure that
/etc/default/grub is set correctly so there is no unexpected reboot
failure after a kernel update.

[Bug 1915238] [NEW] warning: /var/spool/postfix/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt and /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt differ

2021-02-09 Thread Ante Karamatić
Public bug reported:

By simply copying certs from /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt to
/var/spool/postfix/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt, this warning and
potential security issues could be avoided.

Something like this would be a start:

+ * Support for secure execution environments was in Focal since release,
+but a few more use-cases were found that don't work well in those
+conditions. This is one of them and fixing it shall further complete

+a) in any environment now render iommu_platform=on into the qemu
+ commandline
+b) in a Secure Execution environment allow the guest to start (due to
+ that extra argument that now is configurable)
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ * The code it changes is mostly specific around vsock and to some extend
+on a more generic level around qemu command validation. Therefore the
+places to look out for (of the many very different qemu/kvm/libvirt use

[Bug 1915233] [NEW] Document Viewer has no underlines on Alt-Spacebar menu

2021-02-09 Thread Humphrey van Polanen Petel
Public bug reported:

Alt-Spacebar brings up a menu to minimize-maximize-move-etc the window.

That menu does not have letters underlined so the user cannot use the
keyboard.

There are people in the world that prefer not to use the mouse for
reason of, for example, suffering from, or trying to prevent getting,
repetitive strain injury (RSI).

[Bug 1914853] Re: regression-update: Unexpected Results 'iw reg set US'

2021-02-09 Thread Pamela Fong
Hmm... maybe my specific problem is flaky hardware. Today I ran an

and surprisingly my crda region is properly set:

[Bug 1914372] Re: Ubuntu packages affected by CVE-2020-24553

2021-02-09 Thread Avital Ostromich
Thank you for the debdiffs, all the golang-1.14 diffs built without
issue. Both the patched golang-1.10 builds failed due to
matryoshka_test.go, which is no longer present in golang-1.14:

2021/02/10 01:34:37 cgi: copy error: write tcp

2021/02/10 01:34:37 cgi: missing required Content-Type in headers
2021/02/10 01:34:37 cgi: no headers

I'll be taking a closer look tomorrow but if you have any insights, please let
me know.
Other than that, I just updated the changelogs to match the security update
template
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/UpdatePreparation#Update_the_packaging and
will be setting the bionic version to 1.10.4-2ubuntu1~18.04.2 instead of
1.10.4-2ubuntu2~18.04.2

Thanks!

[Bug 1885089] Re: Fail to update DNS settings

2021-02-09 Thread Mark Deneen
It looks like the most recent stable release, 1.2.10, still does not
have the change referenced by Romain above. It looks like a trivial
patch and would make a lot of people happy. Would it be possible to
backport this single commit before 21.04 lands?

[Bug 1915161] Re: deja dup won't restore a folder where name contains apostrophe and space

2021-02-09 Thread Michael Terry
Sorry you were hit by this issue! But good news is that a fix is
available. It was caused by an interaction between Deja Dup and
duplicity when a single quote was followed by a space.

This was fixed upstream in duplicity 0.8.17 (and worked around in deja-
dup 42.5). Both those fixes are in Ubuntu 21.04 already, so I'll mark
this fixed in development Ubuntu.

If folks want to backport a fix to Ubuntu 20.10, this patch to duplicity should
be all that's needed:
https://gitlab.com/duplicity/duplicity/-/commit/14f18f9112ce98ad6b5ba5cf58a8f6927dab

Meanwhile, you can workaround this in Ubuntu 20.10 by either directly
using the duplicity commandline to restore the file or switching to the
snap version of deja-dup which has the latest fixes.

Run "man duplicity" to see how to use its commandline (it's a bit complicated,
but can be managed).
Or "snap install deja-dup --classic" to install the latest Deja Dup.

Sorry for the trouble.

[Bug 1897561] Re: libperl.so.5.30.0 causes nginx to segfault

2021-02-09 Thread Thomas Ward
I have no insights into whether the linked GitHub issue fixes anything.
That's a Perl package problem, and not an NGINX one. We could
potentially stop requiring the Perl module but a segfault in libperl is
a Perl issue, not an nginx one. However, we don't have a *clear*
reproduction solution for this that would guarantee testing, and
rebuilding Perl and then building the NGINX package against that perl
version is a nontrivial process (and I don't have the cycles right now
to drive that kind of build test).

[Bug 1915084] Re: Nemo crashes when selecting a folder, entering the folder

2021-02-09 Thread Joshua Peisach
** Description changed:

- When selecting a folder, then entering the folder and letting go of the
- folder, nemo crashes.
+ [Impact]

- To reproduce:
- 1) Select a folder by left clicking. DO NOT LET GO OF THE BUTTON. KEEP
HOLDING.
- 2) Press 'Enter' to go into said folder.
- 3) Now inside of the folder, let go of the mouse.
- 4) Nemo will crash.
+ * When selecting a folder, then entering the folder and letting go of
+ the folder, nemo, the file manager crashes.

- I will make a SRU patch for this.
+ * This affects Ubuntu Cinnamon Remix and Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 & point
+ releases
+
+ * Simple fix of clearing the drag state
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * To reproduce:
+ * 1) Select a folder by left clicking. DO NOT LET GO OF THE BUTTON. KEEP
HOLDING.
+ * 2) Press 'Enter' to go into said folder.
+ * 3) Now inside of the folder, let go of the mouse.
+ * 4) Nemo will crash.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ * With this patch, it is possible that in some cases with dragging or
+ icon changing, the drag state can be cleared when it shouldn't be.
+
+ * Regression Potential: My main concern is drag state clearing when it
+ shouldn't.

[Bug 1915181] Re: cups crashes with SIGABRT every other printing attempt

2021-02-09 Thread Nicolas Joyard
** Description changed:

Using ubuntu 20.10, cups 2.3.3-3ubuntu1, with a networked Samsung C480
printer (was automatically detected and set up on installation of the
  system).

Every other attempt to print fails with a varying message depending on
the printing app (eg. on libreoffice write, "Cannot start printer").
Waiting a few minutes and retrying prints successfully.

Looking at cups.service journal messages while attempting to print, it
looks like the second printing attempt crashes cupsd

  cupsd[]: free(): invalid pointer
  systemd[1]: cups.service: Main process exited, code=dumped, status=6/ABRT
  systemd[1]: cups.service: Failed with result core-dump

The service then proceeds to restart after a few seconds, and trying to
print again succeeds. Trying to print once more thereafter triggers the
  issue again.

- I could not find a trace of the coredump, and cuspd's error_log shows
- nothing happening around the crash (it does show some
- "org.freedesktop.ColorManager.AlreadyExists" error messages on restart,
- but I figured this would be normal, I can see the same message on other
- machines that have no printing issues).
-
- I would expect this kind of event to trigger an apport report, but there
- is no apport popup when it happens. Maybe because it's not a user
- process, not sure (this is not my usual setup, I've not been using
- Ubuntu for years).
+ Cuspd's error_log shows nothing happening around the crash (it does show
+ some "org.freedesktop.ColorManager.AlreadyExists" error messages on
+ restart, but I figured this would be normal, I can see the same message
+ on other machines that have no printing issues).

This is a pretty standard (and recent) ubuntu install, with not much
customized; in particular no apport custom config was made, and nothing
was configured on cups side or ubuntu print settings, everything is set
up as it was autodetected on install.

The same printer works flawlessly on a different computer using Arch and
cups 2.3.3 as well (albeit without any ubuntu patches, obviously).

[Bug 1915222] [NEW] InRelease lists files on which apt fails when on local repository

2021-02-09 Thread Thomas
Public bug reported:

On Focal:

Please verify that
ftp://www.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/focal/main/dep11/ does not
contain a file called icons-48x48.tar - though the InRelease file
(ftp://www.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/focal/InRelease) lists one.

When the sources.list is configured for http, the missing file is ignored and
apt works fine.
When the sources.list is configured for a local folder, apt fails:

Failed to fetch file:/... File not found.
E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored ...

Still it is not ignored cause apt now fails to install any new package.

---

Note that, in order to test this I setup an apache2 for a local
directory listing. So apt is always accessing the same repository. Once
with http: (which succeeds) and once with file:

---

So from my perspective the handling of missing files (from InRelease) is
different when using http: and file:
Either apt allows missing files from a local repository, or the InRelease file
shall be corrected.

Regards!

[Bug 1911848] Re: kvm: Windows 2k19 with Hyper-v role gets stuck on pending hypervisor requests on cascadelake based kvm hosts

2021-02-09 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Performing verification for Focal.

I installed 5.4.0-65-generic to a c5.metal AWS machine, and installed
ubuntu-desktop and a KVM stack. I install xrdp and verified I could
reach the VMs desktop.

I installed virt-manager, and configured the Windows 2k19 VM in
accordance with the testcase section, carefully making sure the
Cascadelake-Server-noTSX processor is selected and the features in
place.

I installed Windows, and installed the virtio drivers. From there I
enabled Hyper-V and restarted.

The machine got stuck during reboot, after the hyper-v feature had
installed and configured. Looking at the performance tab, the machine is
stuck at 100% CPU, see 5.4.0-65-generic.png attached.

I then enabled -proposed and installed 5.4.0-66-generic, and kexec
rebooted. From there I started the windows VM, which came up properly to
the desktop. Looking at the performance tab, CPU usage is low, and is
what is expected. See 5.4.0-66-generic.png attached.

The 5.4.0-66-generic kernel fixes the issue, happy to mark as verified.

Looking at cups.service journal messages while attempting to print, it
looks like the second printing attempt crashes cupsd

  cupsd[]: free(): invalid pointer
  systemd[1]: cups.service: Main process exited, code=dumped, status=6/ABRT
  systemd[1]: cups.service: Failed with result core-dump

The service then proceeds to restart after a few seconds, and trying to
print again succeeds. Trying to print once more thereafter triggers the
  issue again.

I could not find a trace of the coredump, and cuspd's error_log shows
nothing happening around the crash (it does show some
  "org.freedesktop.ColorManager.AlreadyExists" error messages on restart,
but I figured this would be normal, I can see the same message on other
machines that have no printing issues).

I would expect this kind of event to trigger an apport report, but there
is no apport popup when it happens. Maybe because it's not a user
process, not sure (this is not my usual setup, I've not been using
  Ubuntu for years).

[Bug 1904615] Re: cpio symlink traversal

2021-02-09 Thread Steve Beattie
Hello Yiğit,

Sorry for the delay in responding to this issue. This issue was
originally identified as CVE-2015-1197 and fixed around the same time
frame. It was addressed in upstream cpio commit
https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/cpio.git/commit/?id=45b0ee2b407913c533f7ded8d6f8cbeec16ff6ca
in a differently taken approach when vendors fixed the issue in 2015.
This differening behavior change resulted in the debian maintainer
undoing the symlink mangling portion of the fix via
https://salsa.debian.org/lamby/pkg-
cpio/-/commit/1d1163018b2ca240a6a1c9404f7e05c3bfa62f94 and this is what
has landed in focal and newer.

Relevant debian bug reports:

  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=946267
  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=946469

upstream thread about the issue:

  https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-cpio/2019-11/msg00013.html

Alas, at this time, it does not appear to have been addressed upstream.

Thanks for the report.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is mostly about finding & fixing problems thus preventing
future users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at

[Bug 1915212] [NEW] Sync skiboot 6.7.1+dfsg-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2021-02-09 Thread Matthieu Clemenceau
Public bug reported:

Please sync skiboot 6.7.1+dfsg-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
  * Include missing DEP-3 headers to the recent patches.
  * opal-prd: mmap(range:ibm,hbrt-code-image,...) fails with EPERM
(LP: #1905393) opal-prd fails to start
 d/patches/0005-fix-opal-prd-fail-with-EPERM.patch
  * opal-prd: Have a worker process handle page offlining
(LP: #1904585) Have a worker process handle page offlining
 d/patches/0006-fix-opal-prd-have-worker-process-handle-page-offlining.patch

Both bugs were resolved with cherry picks from the skiboot github project
for skiboot 6.6.2-1. Both cherry pick came from commits targeting version 6.7.1
The new debian version is based on skiboot-6.7.1 which includes both patches
and so Ubuntu delta isn't required anymore. The missing DEP-3 was a packging
mistake and can be ignored
I also ran a sbuild of this package for hirsute successfully

Changelog entries since current hirsute version 6.6.2-1ubuntu2:

skiboot (6.7.1+dfsg-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Update to new upstream version 6.7.1+dfsg (removing libstb/tss2).
  * Update d/copyright
  * Reflect dfsg in d/watch
  * Bump Standards-Version (no change needed)

+ During the automation testing of vendor's iSCSI target using Open-iscsi
initiator, Initiator host reported 120 second kernel hang issue. The automation
test was doing SCSI remove_device operation when the issue observered.
Automation test perform following sequence of operations,
  1. Establish iSCSI session
  2. Create bunch of iSCSI LUNs.
  3. Discover LUNs through sysfs scan
  4. Format LUNs
  5. Perform IO
  6. Remove LUN
  7. Delete LUN

  Observations from initiator host:
  1. Already discovered iSCSI LUNs went to offline state.
  2. New LUNs are not being discovered.
  3. NOP-in/NOP-out PDU exchange works fine from the iSCSI session.

Note: Single iSCSI session is present between initiator and target.

  Expected behavior
  -
SCSI remove_device should succeed and automation test should continue.
Issue is observed even with following commit, which has fix for similar issue.

[Bug 1899269] Re: update-manager crashed with FileNotFoundError in __init__(): [Errno 2] Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type: '/var/lib/dbus/machine-id'

2021-02-09 Thread Brian Murray
While this system was installed with an unofficial remix of Ubuntu, it
does seem like there may be a missing fallback option with update-
manager. Here's the source code of the Traceback:

# a stable machine uniq id
try:
with open(self.UNIQ_MACHINE_ID_FILE) as f:
self.machine_uniq_id = f.read()
except FileNotFoundError:
with open(self.UNIQ_MACHINE_ID_FILE_FALLBACK) as f:
self.machine_uniq_id = f.read()

Perhaps the fallback machine_uniq_id should be one that installs all
updates which are being phased.
