[Bug 1874272] Re: Stage "searching for obsolete software" takes a very long time (30 minutes)

2021-04-23 Thread Conrad Knight
A google search brought me here... Was this ever solved? I'm currently
having the same problem, upgrading from 20.10 to 21.04. "Searching for
obsolete software" was displayed about an hour and a half ago, and the
line below says " eading state information... 52%" (I assume there's a
display bug in the output of that last line and there should be a
leading 'R').

One cpu is pegged at 100%, running the upgrade process. /var/log/dist-
upgrade/apt.log is full of lines like:

[Bug 1573594] Re: Missing null termination in PROTOCOL_BINARY_CMD_SASL_LIST_MECHS response handling

2021-04-23 Thread Stefan Friesel
> Calling memset() would be incorrect in this case even if you were concerned
> about a NULL character
How is it incorrect? memcached_response never writes the last byte of the
buffer, so whatever it writes will be guaranteed to be null terminated.

> i.e. the minimal change would be to insert a NULL character in the buffer
> after looked at the length of the returned string from memcached_response()
You can't look at the length of the returned string as the buffer is already
corrupted at that point and memcached_response does not return the length
either. That's why the buffer needs to be zeroed before passing it in. There's
a reason multiple people reviewed and signed off on this patch.

> but you don't have to do that because it is already done for you
> I mentioned the error path only because in that path there is no guarantee
> that a NULL would be added to the buffer

Once again, you fail to cite where this is ostensibly "already done".
The non-error path does not add a null termination, I double checked.

[Bug 1573937] Re: Blender crashes on startup due to missing libIlmImf.so.6

blender depends libopenexr22, and libopenexr22 includes "libIlmImf-2_2.so.22".
https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/blender

I bet libIlmImf.so.6 requirements comes from something like old addon,

[Bug 1922582] Re: linux-azure: Enable CONFIG_FPGA_MGR_XILINX_SPI for Azure cloud kernel

2021-04-23 Thread Ubuntu Kernel Bot
This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves
the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the
results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-
focal' to 'verification-done-focal'. If the problem still exists, change
the tag 'verification-needed-focal' to 'verification-failed-focal'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will
be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how
to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

[Bug 1573594] Re: Missing null termination in PROTOCOL_BINARY_CMD_SASL_LIST_MECHS response handling

2021-04-23 Thread Brian Aker
Please provide a test case clearly showing the bug in the upstream
project.

Calling memset() would be incorrect in this case even if you were
concerned about a NULL character ( i.e. the minimal change would be to
insert a NULL character in the buffer after looked at the length of the
returned string from memcached_response()... but you don't have to do
that because it is already done for you ).

I mentioned the error path only because in that path there is no
guarantee that a NULL would be added to the buffer, but then the buffer
passed to memcached_response() goes unused.

[Bug 1715552] Re: VMWare does not start

2021-04-23 Thread Chris Parker
These instructions worked as well for me with VMWare Player 12.5.9 after
upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS Desktop with Linux kernel 4.15, thanks!

However, I'm now prepping for further upgrade to the latest Ubuntu 21.04
(kernel 5.11), and there seems to be more problems! The distro's shared
libraries are now further updated, so after manually building the
vmmon.ko and vmnet.ko for the new kernel using the vmware-host-modules
project, starting the VMware services successfully, and adding the soft
link on libz.so.1, when I try to launch vmplayer I get the following
output and then a segmentation fault:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ vmplayer
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "atk-bridge":
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libatspi.so.0: undefined symbol:
g_type_add_instance_private

(vmware-modconfig:53428): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in
module_path: "adwaita",
/usr/share/themes/Yaru/gtk-2.0/main.rc:775: error: unexpected identifier

(vmware-modconfig:53428): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in
module_path: "adwaita",

Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module":

directory
/usr/bin/vmplayer: line 106: 53428 Segmentation fault (core dumped)
"$BINDIR"/vmware-modconfig --appname="VMware Player" --icon="vmware-player"
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

I suspect there's another shared libraries that now needs to be
redirected to the distro, but I'm really not clear how to figure out the
dependency tree, as VMware uses this 'appLoader' application to launch
it's actual binaries and masks the environment and what it is actually
doing.

Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, upgrading VMware to 14 or later
is not an option for me, as my CPU is from before 2011 without Intel EPT
/ AMD NPT, and 12.5.9 happens to be the last version that works on
these. So this problem is going to keep cropping up for some people for
a very long time! Any help resolving the dependencies between VMware's
references and/or shipped libraries and Ubuntu's latest would be greatly
appreciated!

Please point to the place where null is appended.

mentioned in the original report.

Where does it say in the original report that an error is returned?

> there is no bug in the reporters work
This bug was observed in an actual production environment with information
getting leaked, not based merely on code analysis.

[Bug 1925981] [NEW] 20.04.02 introduces noise into the audio channel when using YouTube

2021-04-23 Thread Robert Pearson
Public bug reported:

My hardware:
HDMI output to TV/Monitor. Optical cable to Phonak TVLink. Bluetooth to
compilot. ComPilot to hearing aids.
Browsing YouTube with Google Chrome.
Works fine with 18.04.
Tried Ubuntu MATE 20.04.02.
High level of noise with 20.04. When reboot to 18.04 noise goes away.

Not Hardware. Just bad code in 20.04.02 audio.

[Bug 1573594] Re: Missing null termination in PROTOCOL_BINARY_CMD_SASL_LIST_MECHS response handling

2021-04-23 Thread Brian Aker
Hi,

>From the code:
memcached_return_t rc= memcached_response(server, mech, sizeof(mech), NULL);
  if (memcached_failed(rc))

memcached_response() adds NULL to strings if memcached_response() successful,
otherwise the code follows the error path. The author of this report mentions:
libmemcached/response.cc:619
which is:
  if ((rc= memcached_safe_read(instance, buffer, bodylen)) !=
MEMCACHED_SUCCESS)
  {
return MEMCACHED_UNKNOWN_READ_FAILURE;
  }

As you can see, an error is returned back to memcached_sasl as mentioned
in the original report.

All that you will achieve with calling memset() in this manner is hide
any real bug that valgrind would find.

The reason why "This bug is difficult to reproduce since it depends on
the contents of the stack.", is because there is no bug in the reporters
work.

I cannot find a case of this bug being reported upstream, otherwise I
would close it there with above message.

Thanks,

   -- Brian

FWIW I appreciate people going to the effort of reporting bugs, it takes
time to write them up.

[Bug 1874066] Re: Cannot install on non-RST drive if RST is enabled and there is a second RST-enabled drive

2021-04-23 Thread Emil Lenngren
I also got hit by this bug when trying to install Ubuntu 21.04. I want
to install Ubuntu on a separate USB memory I have plugged into my
computer, but couldn't get past this step.

Thankfully ubiquity is written in Python so I could easily in my Live
session go to /usr/lib/ubiquity/plugins/ubi-prepare.py, remove the code
in the should_show_rst_page() method and change it to return the
constant False.

But I'd like to see an option "Continue and install on another disk" if
it is detected that another disk is plugged in that is usable.

[Bug 1925482] Re: Ubuntu 21.04 won't boot with NVMe enabled on Parallels Desktop 16

2021-04-23 Thread Guilherme G. Piccoli
Hey Dominik, thanks a lot for the log, it's really helpful. It seems
there's a null pointer in a struct req member...my investigation
continues. Can I ask you for 2 more tests? In fact..make it 3, if not a
big issue for you. I'd like to ask you for mainline kernels testing, we
have packages for the versions I need:

(a) https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.12-rc8/

(b) https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.11/

(c) https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.10/

Basically the test is to determine if it is already fixed upstream, and
when the issue was possibly introduced - this would help a lot.

You could just boot the guest in SATA-mode and install (a), then reboot
- if everything is fine, NVMe-boot the guest and see if it reproduces
the issue. Repeat that for (b) and (c) - that is much appreciated!
Thanks,

Guilherme

```
In the `sysinfo.log` file:
```
2021-04-23 17:13:14,425 ERRORNetwork plugin raised an exception.
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/landscape/sysinfo/sysinfo.py", line 99,

get_network_interface_speed
res = status_cmd.tostring()
AttributeError: 'array.array' object has no attribute 'tostring'
```
Upon investigation, `tostring()` method in Python array was deprecated in 3.9
(The default Python version in 21.04?)
On 20.10:
```
Python 3.8.6 (default, Jan 27 2021, 15:42:20)
[GCC 10.2.0] on linux
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> from array import array
>>> array('B').tostring()
b''
```
On 21.04:
```
Python 3.9.4 (default, Apr  4 2021, 19:38:44)
[GCC 10.2.1 20210401] on linux
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> from array import array
>>> array('B').tostring()
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "", line 1, in
AttributeError: 'array.array' object has no attribute 'tostring'
```
The fix would simply be replacing `tostring()` with `tobytes()`
`tostring` was deprecated since Python 3.2, and was removed in 3.9
https://docs.python.org/3.8/library/array.html#array.array.tostring
PS: I have upgraded my installation from 20.10 instead of brand new
installation of the 21.04 release ISO. Not sure if that changes
anything, the source I find here still uses `tostring()`
[Bug 1925761] Re: libnns-mymachines update breaks local mdns discovery
2021-04-23 Thread Givrix
very probably were running 245.4-ubuntu3.5 before, not 245.4-ubuntu3.
Yes I know, but I don't know any easy way to downgrade to 3.5, there is
only choice between 3 and 3.6.
Full journalctl or only specific service ?
[Bug 1899800] Re: Runtime deadlock: pthread_cond_signal failed to wake up pthread_cond_wait due to a bug in undoing stealing
2021-04-23 Thread Balint Reczey
@slavivanyuk Thank you for testing the fix.
I've also verified the fix in 2.31-0ubuntu9.3 on Focal with repro-
lp1899800.c in a 4 core VM running on a 4 core machine.
The reproducer did hang after a half hour with unfixed glibc:
[Bug 1925964] Re: HP NC364T NIC with 20.04.2 LTS Issues
2021-04-23 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.  It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general.  It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it.  You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.
To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1925964/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.
[This is an automated message.  I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]
