[Bug 1874272] Re: Stage "searching for obsolete software" takes a very long time (30 minutes)
A google search brought me here... Was this ever solved? I'm currently having the same problem, upgrading from 20.10 to 21.04. "Searching for obsolete software" was displayed about an hour and a half ago, and the line below says " eading state information... 52%" (I assume there's a display bug in the output of that last line and there should be a leading 'R'). One cpu is pegged at 100%, running the upgrade process. /var/log/dist- upgrade/apt.log is full of lines like: Starting pkgProblemResolver with broken count: 1 Starting 2 pkgProblemResolver with broken count: 1 Investigating (0) fonts-gujr:amd64 < 2:1.4 @ii K Ib > Broken fonts-gujr:amd64 Depends on fonts-kalapi:amd64 < 1.0-4 @ii pR > Considering fonts-kalapi:amd64 10001 as a solution to fonts-gujr:amd64 0 Removing fonts-gujr:amd64 rather than change fonts-kalapi:amd64 MarkDelete fonts-gujr:amd64 < 2:1.4 @ii K Ib > FU=0 Done MarkDelete pmidi:amd64 < 1.7.1-1 @ii K > FU=1 MarkDelete librsvg2-common:i386 < 2.50.3+dfsg-1 @ii K > FU=1 MarkDelete fonts-navilu:amd64 < 1.2-3 @ii K > FU=1 Starting pkgProblemResolver with broken count: 1 Starting 2 pkgProblemResolver with broken count: 1 Investigating (0) fonts-knda:amd64 < 2:1.3 @ii K Ib > Broken fonts-knda:amd64 Depends on fonts-navilu:amd64 < 1.2-3 @ii pR > Considering fonts-navilu:amd64 10001 as a solution to fonts-knda:amd64 0 Removing fonts-knda:amd64 rather than change fonts-navilu:amd64 MarkDelete fonts-knda:amd64 < 2:1.3 @ii K Ib > FU=0 Done main.log is filling with: 2021-04-24 01:44:16,280 DEBUG package 'python3.9-examples' produces an unwanted removal 'libsnack-alsa', skipping 2021-04-24 01:44:52,824 DEBUG 'python3.9-examples' scheduled for remove but not safe to remove, skipping 2021-04-24 01:44:52,969 DEBUG package 'firebird3.0-common-doc' produces an unwanted removal 'libsnack-alsa', skipping 2021-04-24 01:45:28,698 DEBUG 'firebird3.0-common-doc' scheduled for remove but not safe to remove, skipping 2021-04-24 01:45:29,665 DEBUG package 'libvdpau1:i386' produces an unwanted removal 'libsnack-alsa', skipping 2021-04-24 01:46:05,161 DEBUG 'libvdpau1:i386' scheduled for remove but not safe to remove, skipping 2021-04-24 01:46:05,313 DEBUG package 'python3-sss' produces an unwanted removal 'libsnack-alsa', skipping 2021-04-24 01:46:43,381 DEBUG 'python3-sss' scheduled for remove but not safe to remove, skipping 2021-04-24 01:46:43,517 DEBUG package 'libvo-amrwbenc0:i386' produces an unwanted removal 'libsnack-alsa', skipping 2021-04-24 01:47:19,690 DEBUG 'libvo-amrwbenc0:i386' scheduled for remove but not safe to remove, skipping 2021-04-24 01:47:19,830 DEBUG package 'ruby-svn' produces an unwanted removal 'libsnack-alsa', skipping -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1874272 Title: Stage "searching for obsolete software" takes a very long time (30 minutes) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1874272/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1573594] Re: Missing null termination in PROTOCOL_BINARY_CMD_SASL_LIST_MECHS response handling
> Calling memset() would be incorrect in this case even if you were concerned > about a NULL character How is it incorrect? memcached_response never writes the last byte of the buffer, so whatever it writes will be guaranteed to be null terminated. > i.e. the minimal change would be to insert a NULL character in the buffer > after looked at the length of the returned string from memcached_response() You can't look at the length of the returned string as the buffer is already corrupted at that point and memcached_response does not return the length either. That's why the buffer needs to be zeroed before passing it in. There's a reason multiple people reviewed and signed off on this patch. > but you don't have to do that because it is already done for you > I mentioned the error path only because in that path there is no guarantee > that a NULL would be added to the buffer Once again, you fail to cite where this is ostensibly "already done". [Bug 1573594] Re: Missing null termination in PROTOCOL_BINARY_CMD_SASL_LIST_MECHS response handling
Please provide a test case clearly showing the bug in the upstream project. Calling memset() would be incorrect in this case even if you were concerned about a NULL character ( i.e. the minimal change would be to insert a NULL character in the buffer after looked at the length of the returned string from memcached_response()... but you don't have to do that because it is already done for you ). I mentioned the error path only because in that path there is no guarantee that a NULL would be added to the buffer, but then the buffer passed to memcached_response() goes unused. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1573594 Title: Missing null termination in PROTOCOL_BINARY_CMD_SASL_LIST_MECHS response handling To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libmemcached/+bug/1573594/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1715552] Re: VMWare does not start
These instructions worked as well for me with VMWare Player 12.5.9 after upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS Desktop with Linux kernel 4.15, thanks! However, I'm now prepping for further upgrade to the latest Ubuntu 21.04 (kernel 5.11), and there seems to be more problems! The distro's shared libraries are now further updated, so after manually building the vmmon.ko and vmnet.ko for the new kernel using the vmware-host-modules project, starting the VMware services successfully, and adding the soft link on libz.so.1, when I try to launch vmplayer I get the following output and then a segmentation fault: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ vmplayer Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "atk-bridge": /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libatspi.so.0: undefined symbol: g_type_add_instance_private (vmware-modconfig:53428): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "adwaita", /usr/share/themes/Yaru/gtk-2.0/main.rc:775: error: unexpected identifier `direction', expected character `}' (vmware-modconfig:53428): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "adwaita", /usr/share/themes/Yaru/gtk-2.0/hacks.rc:28: error: invalid string constant "normal_entry", expected valid string constant Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module": libcanberra-gtk-module.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory /usr/bin/vmplayer: line 106: 53428 Segmentation fault (core dumped) "$BINDIR"/vmware-modconfig --appname="VMware Player" --icon="vmware-player" ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ I suspect there's another shared libraries that now needs to be redirected to the distro, but I'm really not clear how to figure out the dependency tree, as VMware uses this 'appLoader' application to launch it's actual binaries and masks the environment and what it is actually doing. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, upgrading VMware to 14 or later is not an option for me, as my CPU is from before 2011 without Intel EPT / AMD NPT, and 12.5.9 happens to be the last version that works on these. So this problem is going to keep cropping up for some people for a very long time! Any help resolving the dependencies between VMware's references and/or shipped libraries and Ubuntu's latest would be greatly appreciated! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1715552 Title: VMWare does not start To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1715552/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1573594] Re: Missing null termination in PROTOCOL_BINARY_CMD_SASL_LIST_MECHS response handling
Hi, >From the code: memcached_return_t rc= memcached_response(server, mech, sizeof(mech), NULL); if (memcached_failed(rc)) memcached_response() adds NULL to strings if memcached_response() successful, otherwise the code follows the error path. The author of this report mentions: libmemcached/response.cc:619 which is: if ((rc= memcached_safe_read(instance, buffer, bodylen)) != MEMCACHED_SUCCESS) { return MEMCACHED_UNKNOWN_READ_FAILURE; } As you can see, an error is returned back to memcached_sasl as mentioned in the original report. All that you will achieve with calling memset() in this manner is hide any real bug that valgrind would find. The reason why "This bug is difficult to reproduce since it depends on the contents of the stack.", is because there is no bug in the reporters work. I cannot find a case of this bug being reported upstream, otherwise I would close it there with above message. [Bug 1925482] Re: Ubuntu 21.04 won't boot with NVMe enabled on Parallels Desktop 16
Hey Dominik, thanks a lot for the log, it's really helpful. It seems there's a null pointer in a struct req member...my investigation continues. Can I ask you for 2 more tests? In fact..make it 3, if not a big issue for you. I'd like to ask you for mainline kernels testing, we have packages for the versions I need: (a) https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.12-rc8/ (b) https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.11/ (c) https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.10/ Basically the test is to determine if it is already fixed upstream, and when the issue was possibly introduced - this would help a lot. You could just boot the guest in SATA-mode and install (a), then reboot - if everything is fine, NVMe-boot the guest and see if it reproduces the issue. Repeat that for (b) and (c) - that is much appreciated! [Bug 1925964] Re: HP NC364T NIC with 20.04.2 LTS Issues
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode. To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1925964/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package. [This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.] ** Tags added: bot-comment -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1925964 Title: HP NC364T NIC with 20.04.2 LTS Issues To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1925964/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
