[Bug 1915598] Re: Use calamares as kubuntu installer

2021-05-20 Thread Luna
Calamares doesn't have an option to leave /boot unencrypted (the way
Kubuntu/Ubiquity does currently), which causes some problems:

https://github.com/calamares/calamares/issues/1311#issue-556802034
https://github.com/calamares/calamares/issues/1311#issuecomment-834167109

An option will be add and the pull request is yet to be made. I think
the switch should happen only after the implementation of this option.

[Bug 1929158] [NEW] upgrade of libvpx6 crashes ffmpeg

2021-05-20 Thread Paul Stow
Public bug reported:

Automatic upgrade of libvpx6 to version 1.10.0-0ubuntu1~20.04.sav0 on
Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS focal causes ffmpeg to fail with "Failed to
initialize encoder: ABI version mismatch" error message.

Issue can be resolved by reverting to previous version with "sudo apt-
get install libvpx6=1.8.2-1build1".

Suggests a dependency issue between libvpx6 and ffmpeg.

[Bug 1928360] Re: Switch to Fcitx 5 for Chinese

2021-05-20 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks handsome_feng!

The Kylin discussion makes me confident that it's fine for Lubuntu as
well. The Lubuntu situation is different, though, since im-config is
disabled by default unless a Chinese locale is in effect. This discourse
topic comes to mind:

https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/default-im-config-configuration/17136

I'm still interested in talking with some Lubuntu developer on that. But
the outcome of such a discussion would affect other packages but
language-selector, so I just pushed and uploaded the proposed change.

[Bug 1916945] Re: unable to Poweroff, it causes a restart instead

2021-05-20 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Would it be possible for you to do a kernel bisection?

First, find the last -rc kernel works and the first -rc kernel doesn’t
work from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Then,
$ sudo apt build-dep linux
$ git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git
$ cd linux
$ git bisect start
$ git bisect good $(the working version you found)
$ git bisect bad $(the non-working version found)
$ make localmodconfig
$ make -j`nproc` deb-pkg
Install the newly built kernel, then reboot with it.
If it still have the same issue,
$ git bisect bad
Otherwise,
$ git bisect good
Repeat to "make -j`nproc` deb-pkg" until you find the offending commit.

[Bug 1929157] [NEW] Intel IPU6 camera: Microsoft Teams can not access the webcam for few minutes when it starts

2021-05-20 Thread You-Sheng Yang
Public bug reported:

Both of snap and deb of Microsoft Teams apps take minutes to probe all
video device nodes before starting up on Intel IPU6 camera platforms.
It's rooted in the extra video devices created for IPU6 TPG (test
pattern generator), and Intel resolved this by removing TPG in their
kernel driver release Release_20210520
(https://github.com/intel/ipu6-drivers/commit/362375c928d184fb0b4187df7da1ffd506bbd07f).

[Bug 1928183] Re: turbostat doesn't work with AMD Cezanne APUs

2021-05-20 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Hi David,

I found a laptop with AMD Ryzen 5 APU and gave it a try, before this
patch turbostat will terminate with return code 243:

Welcome to Ubuntu Impish Indri (development branch) (GNU/Linux

After installing debs from
https://people.canonical.com/~phlin/kernel/lp-1928183-turbostat-cezanne/ and
reboot to 5.11.0-18, the turbostat command seems to be working (not terminate
early with 243):

[Bug 1926990] Re: update-notifier should not alert users about esm-apps in a ESM machine

2021-05-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
- When users are running an ESM distro and looking at motd message they may be
trigger by an alert generated by update-notifier that both esm-infra and
esm-apps could be enable in the machine to receive future updates. However,
esm-apps will not bring much to an ESM distro. This means that

esm-apps could be enabled in the machine to receive future updates. However,

receiving alerts for esm-apps that are not necessary.

  [Test case]

To reproduce the issue, you can:

  1. Launch a xenial container
  2. create the file /etc/ubuntu-advantage/uaclient.conf with the following
content:

  # Ubuntu-Advantage client config file.
  contract_url: 'https://contracts.canonical.com'
  security_url: 'https://ubuntu.com/security'

  https://code.launchpad.net/~ua-client/+archive/ubuntu/daily

PS: Make sure to not allow the installation to override the config file
  you have just created.

  4. Update the version of update-notifier to the one in proposed
  5. Run `/usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check --human-readable`
  6. Verify that both esm-infra and esm-apps alerts appear in the end of the
message

To verify that the error is fixed:

  1. Run the past scenario until step 3
  2. Install the new update-notifier from this ppa:
  https://launchpad.net/~lamoura/+archive/ubuntu/update-notifier-test-ppa/
  3. Run `/usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check --human-readable`
  4. Verify that only esm-infra is now showing an alert message at the end

  [Where problems could occur]

We are only changing here the condition to output esm-apps alerts. If that
condition is not right we may miss to display those messages to users that
  need them.

  [Discussion]
When running /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check on a ESM machine, we could
alert the user about the existence of both esm-infra and esm-apps if the system
has unauthenticated source file for both services. Therefore, we would display
a message like that in the system:

  --
Enable UA Apps: ESM to receive additional future security updates.
See https://ubuntu.com/security/esm or run: sudo ua status

Enable UA Infra: ESM to receive additional future security updates.
See https://ubuntu.com/security/esm or run: sudo ua status
  --

This is not ideal, since ESM machine will not gain much from esm-apps.
Also, this messaging may hide the importance of using esm-infra on ESM
machines, since the users will not know beforehand which service to
  prioritize.

[Bug 1928242] Re: Realtek USB hubs in Dell WD19SC/DC/TB fail to work after exiting s2idle

2021-05-20 Thread Chris Chiu
** Description changed:

  [SRU Justification]

  [Impact]
  All of 3 different WD19(TB/SC/DC) docks have 3 Type-A ports and 2 Type-C
ports, and there're highspeed Hubs(0bda:5487 and its substream hub 0bda:5413)
and Superspeed Hubs (0bda:0487 and its downstream hub 0bda:0413). In the bug
description below, we will refer the 2 highspeed hubs as Hub A and Hub A.3, and
the 2 superspeed hubs as Hub B and Hub B.3. All devices connected via either
Type-A or Type-C ports will connect to either Hub A.3 or Hub B.3. If we connect
a wakup enabled device (keyboard) to a Type-A port, the Hub A.3 will fail to
activate after exiting s2idle and all downstream devices will not be detected.
If we have a superspeed device connected to other Type-A port in addition to
the keyboard, this superspeed device actually connects to Hub B.3, and the Hub
B.3 will also fails to work after exiting s2idle. If the wakeup enabled device
connects via Type-C port, there's no such problem.

As a summary, a wakeup enabled device connect to Type-A port will cause
the failure of Hub A.3 and Hub B.3. Hub B.3 only fails when a wakeup
enabled device and a superspeed device both connect via Type-A port.

  [Fix]
Before the resume failure, the upstream hub(Hub A or B) will hit the timeout
problem while doing SetPortFeature(PORT_SUSPEND) to the port of the downstream
hub (Hub A.3 or Hub B.3). However, the PORT_SUSPEND bit of the wPortStatus is
actually turned on for the Hub A.3, we simply need to make the kernel believe
it's already suspended. Then the ClearPortFeature will be done during resume
and the problem will go away.

The Hub B.3 will be tricky. The PORT_SUSPEND bit is not on after the
- suspend timeout, but we need to reset_resume the Hub B.3 to avoid resume
- failure. It's hard to create a generic fix for it. Because it only
- happens when timeout happens on suspending Hub A.3 and there's a
- superspeed device connecting to Type-A port. I can only reset_resume the
- problematic hub if the timeout happens during suspend and it happens to
- be a Realtek hub.
+ suspend timeout, but it needs the ClearPortFeature(PORT_SUSPEND) for Hub
+ B.3 to avoid resume failure. It doesn't comply with the USB spec so it's
+ hard to create a generic fix for it. Because it only happens when
+ timeout happens on suspending Hub A.3 and there's a superspeed device
+ connecting to Type-A port, we choose to leave it as-is and try to
+ address it in the future.

- [Test]
+ [Test Case]
  1. Make sure that the WD19 connects to the laptop
- 2. Connect a USB keyboard and a superspeed USB stick to USB Type-A ports.
+ 2. Connect USB keyboard/mouse to USB Type-A ports.
  3. Suspend the system
  4. Press the Enter key or power button to wake up the system
- 5. Check if the keyboard and USB stick are still working
+ 5. Check if the USB keyboard/mouse are still working
Repeat 4 and 5 for > 10 times w/o losing any USB devices.
+

  [Where problems could occur]
A wakeup enabled device (keyboard) connect to Type-A port will cause the
failure of Hub A.3 and Hub B.3 during resume. Hub B.3 only fails when a wakeup
enabled device and a superspeed device both connect via Type-A port. All
devices connects to Hub A.3 (and B.3 if superspeed device connect via Type-A
port) will be lost after resume.

  [Regression Potential]
Minimum. The fix is only triggered when timeout happens during USB port
suspend and it follows the standard USB protocol to do either resume or
reset_resume.

[Bug 1929087] Re: sfdisk refuses to write GPT table between sector 34 and 2047

2021-05-20 Thread Bill Yikes
A secondary bug manifests from this, whereby sfdisk chokes on its own
output and therefore cannot restore its own backup. E.g. suppose
another tool is used to put a BIOS boot partition from sector 34 to
2047, as follows:

$ sgdisk --clear -a 1 --new=1:34:2047 -c 1:"BIOS boot"
--typecode=1:$(sgdisk --list-types | sed -ne
's/.*\(\).bios.*/\1/gip') /dev/sdb

That works fine, and from that we can run "sfdisk -d /dev/sdb >
dump.txt". But when dump.txt is fed back into sfdisk, it pukes. Yet
the docs claim "It is recommended to save the layout of your devices.
sfdisk supports two ways." .. "Use the --dump option to save a
description of the device layout to a text file." .. "This can later be
restored by: sfdisk /dev/sda < sda.dump"

It's actually a security issue, because someone can make an non-
restorable backup and have the false sense of security that it is
restorable. They wouldn't necessary test restoration either because
that's a destructive process.

** Description changed:

  According to https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GRUB#BIOS_systems, it's
both legal and interesting to place the BIOS BOOT partition from sector
34 to sector 2047, as follows:

  $ sudo sfdisk --no-act -f --label gpt /dev/sdb << EOF
  start=   34, size=2013, name=bios,   type=$(sfdisk
--label gpt -T | awk '{IGNORECASE = 1;} /bios boot/{print $1}')
  start= 2048, size=12582912, name=swap,   type=$(sfdisk
--label gpt -T | awk '{IGNORECASE = 1;} /linux swap/{print $1}')
  EOF

  The output is:

  /dev/sdb1: Sector 34 already used.
Failed to add #1 partition: Numerical result out of range
  Leaving.

- It's a false error. As a workaround, users must omit the BIOS BOOT
- partition then use gdisk to insert it manually. This was uncovered in
- 2015 and perhaps never reported to a bug tracker because it's still
- broken. See https://www.spinics.net/lists/util-linux-ng/msg11253.html

Are you confident that the issue is a new issue? Unfortunately as best I
can tell, the corruption can occur and then will still appear on a fixed
system if it's reading corruption created in the past that unfortunately
scrub doesn't seem to detect.

I've still had no re-occurance here after a few weeks on hirsute with
2.0.2-1ubuntu5 (which includes the
https://github.com/openzfs/zfs/issues/11474 fix) - but from a fresh
install.

[Bug 1929055] Re: The screen turned black for about 15-20 seconds and then all the open applications got killed and I was logged out.

2021-05-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. It looks like something has consumed all your
RAM. Most likely that is (usually) a web browser or buggy gnome-shell
extensions.

Please try removing your extensions:

  cd /home/shivanya/.local/share/gnome-shell
  rm -rf extensions

and then log in again.

Also be careful to not have too many unused web browser tabs open.

Let us know if the problem happens again.

[Bug 1928674] Re: grub-efi-amd64 from grub2-unsigned has lost kernel/postinst.d script

2021-05-20 Thread Steve Langasek
Xenial: server install from ubuntu-16.04.7-server-amd64.iso. Security
updates applied by d-i, including grub-efi-amd64 2.04-1ubuntu44.
/etc/kernel/post{inst,rm}.d/zz-update-grub are not present, as with
bionic.

grub-pc is not installed.

Enabled -proposed in sources.list.

sudo apt install grub-efi-amd64 grub-efi-amd64-bin grub-efi-amd64-signed

/etc/kernel/post{inst,rm}.d/zz-update-grub now exist as expected

sudo apt dist-upgrade to install 4.4.0-210-generic kernel from xenial-
proposed (along with other random bits)

Inspecting /boot/grub/grub.cfg shows references to -210-.

Rebooting, and uname shows -210- is booted.

apport-cli is crashing on hirsute, so I cannot send you the debug log,
but I have tried my setting (with existing swap and efi partitions)
again, and am still getting the same error. I also took some screenshots
and saved the debug log, in case you need it.

Just in case, "apport-cli -u 1926672" and "apport-collect 1926672" are

[Bug 1928674] Re: grub-efi-amd64 from grub2-unsigned has lost kernel/postinst.d script

2021-05-20 Thread Steve Langasek
Bionic: server install from ubuntu-18.04.5-live-server-amd64.iso.
Security updates applied by subiquity, including grub-efi-amd64
2.04-1ubuntu44. /etc/kernel/post{inst,rm}.d/zz-update-grub are not
present (to my surprise - then I worked out this was because grub wasn't
installed in the source squashfs, so this was a new install of the
package from -security rather than an upgrade).

grub-pc is not installed.

Enabled -proposed in sources.list.

sudo apt install grub-efi-amd64 grub-efi-amd64-bin grub-efi-amd64-signed

/etc/kernel/post{inst,rm}.d/zz-update-grub now exist as expected

sudo apt dist-upgrade to install 4.15.0-144-generic kernel from bionic-
proposed (along with other random bits)

Inspecting /boot/grub/grub.cfg shows references to -144-.

Rebooting, and uname shows -144- is booted.

Disabled -proposed again.

sudo do-release-upgrade to focal, to my surprise, does not fail with
conffile conflicts when -proposed is disabled. However, it does fail to
upgrade grub-efi-amd64* due to focal-updates having an earlier version
than bionic-proposed.

$ dpkg -S /etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-grub
grub2-common: /etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-update-grub
$

I do not understand what's happening here with the silent takeover of
the conffiles without an explicit Replaces allowing this; this is not
how I understood dpkg to behave.

I think this is verification-done for bionic and verification-failed for grub2
in focal (which should be withdrawn).
I do not understand what's happening with the conffile being

[Bug 1928860] Re: Recovery key is low-entropy

2021-05-20 Thread Madars
Hi all,

LUKS2 (in zys-format invocation of the corresponding cryptsetup
version) uses Argon2i password-based key deriviation function and
automatically tunes the iteration count/memory cost to be under 2000
milliseconds.

Note that this is timed on the target's machine, and attacker's
machines can be more powerful than that. For example, I created a LUKS
volume on ThinkPad X200 (old hw, but still popular in Coreboot /
Libreboot circles), and a 4 years old Xeon workstation was able to
mount 8 bruteforce-luks passwords/sec against it. (Whereas, for a LUKS
volume generated on the same Xeon machine the passwords/second were
just 2.)

The keyspace of 10^16 recovery keys would mean ~39 610 109 CPU years,
so probably out of reach for current botnets. However, this estimate:

- does not take in account potential improvements in attacker's
capabilities. E.g. Argon2 GPU implementation exists
(but is yet to be incorporated
into something like hashcat); the author estimates the Nvidia
  Tesla/Xeon speed-up to be around 4-6x.

- leaves little margin of error for compromised entropy. For example,
if someone saw first 4 digits of my recovery code, the remaining
  keyspace would shrink by 1x.

So while not threatening in any concrete way, I'd definitely love for
the default to be higher :-) For comparison, BitLocker recovery keys
are 48 decimal digits (not sure how much of it is pure key material
though).

There is, of course, also a balance of security and usability: can
users accurately write down a high-entropy string? Maybe one could get
inspiration from the cryptocurrency world where 12 words from BIP39
wordlist contain 128 bits of entropy (incl 4 bits of checksum), and
can be asked to be entered back (either in full or via random
spot-checks).

[Bug 1928674] Please test proposed package

2021-05-20 Thread Łukasz Zemczak
Hello Dimitri, or anyone else affected,

Accepted grub2-signed into groovy-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2-signed/1.167.2 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
groovy to verification-done-groovy. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-groovy. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

[Bug 1928437] Re: Update to next version of Ubuntu issue

2021-05-20 Thread Brian Murray
Reviewing the log file, /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log, from your
upgrade attempt there was a failure to communicate with the mirror of
the Ubuntu archive which you use. This could either be due to an issue
with your connection to the mirror or with the mirror itself.
Regardless, this is an issue you'll need to sort out by fixing your
network connection or switching to a different mirror of the Ubuntu
archive before the upgrade can complete. If after resolving the
communication error with the mirror you are still unable to upgrade to a
new release of Ubuntu please open a new bug report so we'll have fresh
log files. Thanks and good luck!

[Bug 1929139] Re: control center taking over!

2021-05-20 Thread johno
I just upgraded my raspberry Pi (Ubuntu mate) from 18.04 to 20.04. The
"Control Center" will NOT allow itself to be ignored.

Minimized? Brought to top of all windows
Opened new window? Brought to top of all windows
Closed? It reopens
Switch desktops? Another opens Reboot? Opens right away.

I had this issue in the past with a regular 64bit install Ubuntu on an
older HP desktop even with a clean reinstall. I always thought it was a
driver conflict, corrupted install media, glitch as 20.04 had just been
released... some sort of fluke. But it's back.

This is the only thing I found and it sounds like the same issue, going
on back in 16.04 but was apparently patched.

[Bug 1929123] Re: segfault in apt-esm-hook

2021-05-20 Thread Chad Smith
As Grant(https://code.launchpad.net/~orndorffgrant) mentioned in
internal channels.

This likely could be related to the same Focal and later errors we are
now seeing
https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/4166288511f42a64aee694b80c7d9d3103bb8581

We think the issue might be due to the apt origin of some configured
repository not being present yet, or somehow properly configured.

To confirm, can we get the customer to provide us with:
  1. A gdb backtrace from running:
/usr/lib/ubuntu-advantage/apt-esm-hook process-templates

  2. Please also attach `apt-cache policy` output

  3. Maybe it's worth running this attached binary (test-apt-esm-hook) which
has the following patch applied to our apt-esm-hook
Upstream source here:
