[Bug 1930359] Re: gdm fails to start in a VMware Horizon VDI environment with latest mutter 3.36.9-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 in focal-updates

2021-06-30 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Okay, the affected user has now started experiencing the issue again,
and was forced to roll mutter back on their fleet.

We managed to get some logs this time, and we have determined what is
happening.

When the user upgrades the mutter packages, particularly mutter-common,
the libglib2.0-0 hook is called post-install to re-compile the gsettings
gschemas into the binary file
/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled

Processing triggers for libglib2.0-0:amd64 (2.64.6-1~ubuntu20.04.3) ...

For some reason or another, this fails or errors out, leaving the system
with no /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled file present.

If the VDI was running, and you attempt to start a program, like
nautilus, it fails to open, and you see the following in syslog:

Jul 1 09:28:05 hostname kernel: [510232.497360] traps: nautilus[523090] trap
int3 ip:7f9118995295 sp:7ffe78b4de90 error:0 in
libglib-2.0.so.0.6400.6[7f9118959000+84000]
Jul 1 09:28:05 hostname nautilus[523090]: No GSettings schemas are installed
on the system

If you then reboot, gdm and gnome-session both fail to start, and you
see a blank screen with a blinking cursor.

If you ssh in and check the logs, it is the same issue:

Jul 1 09:29:06 hostname kernel: [ 13.311371] traps: gnome-session-b[2304]
trap int3 ip:7febfac7c295 sp:7ffe75338c60 error:0 in
libglib-2.0.so.0.6400.6[7febfac4+84000]
Jul 1 09:29:06 hostname gnome-session[2304]: gnome-session-binary[2304]:
GLib-GIO-ERROR: No GSettings schemas are installed on the system
Jul 1 09:29:06 hostname gnome-session[2304]: aborting...
Jul 1 09:29:06 hostname gnome-session-binary[2304]: GLib-GIO-ERROR: No
GSettings schemas are installed on the system#012aborting...
Jul 1 09:29:06 hostname gdm3: GdmDisplay: Session never registered, failing
Jul 1 09:29:06 hostname systemd[1]: session-c6.scope: Succeeded.
Jul 1 09:29:06 hostname gdm3: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X
display failures reached: check X server log for errors
Jul 1 09:29:06 hostname gdm3: Child process -2282 was already dead.

You can reproduce the problem pretty easily. Take a started Ubuntu 20.04
Desktop VM and run:

$ sudo rm /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled

Then try open gedit or nautiuls and see them fail. Then try reboot, and
you will meet the black screen with blinking cursor.

I looked at all the changes in mutter 3.36.9-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 and there
doesn't seem to be any related to gsettings.

Maybe it has something to do with the gsettings in the affected user's
environment? I will try ask for a tarball.

But what we do know, if that when we upgrade mutter, the
gschemas.compiled is removed and never replaced, or is corrupted.

[Bug 1934221] [NEW] systemd-resolve segfault

2021-06-30 Thread Denys Fedoryshchenko
Public bug reported:

systemd-resolve keep crashing and it is very annoying as sometimes it
severely interrupt normal dns resolving.

Last uploaded report is 2d9e7378-d89b-11eb-9e14-fa163ee63de6
Typical error in dmesg:
systemd-resolve[1792202]: segfault at 564ff982f3e0 ip 564ff982f3e0 sp
7ffe2fd0b758 error 15

apport hints me that problem is related to mdns

#3 0x7f3e903c2f11 in sd_event_dispatch () from /lib/systemd
/libsystemd-shared-245.so

It might be (or not) related that some hosts with mdns in my network
have ipv6 enabled.

I've marked this as 'Opinion' as I think we need a further discussion -
every fix I've explored so far inhibits some use case which relies on
memory locking.

[Bug 1934216] Re: Night mode in KDE Plasma flickers after upgrading Kubuntu from Groovy to Hirsute Hippo

2021-06-30 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1934216/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1934214] [NEW] dual screens are overlapping upon resolution change

2021-06-30 Thread Bill Yikes
Public bug reported:

There is a laptop with an LVDS-1 and a VGA-1 (for the external display).

The first problem is that the native resolution of the external LCD
(VGA-1) is 1680x1050, but that's not the default. The default
resolution is much lower than 1680x1050. I'm not sure if that's a xorg
bug or a ratpoison bug.

Anyway, I used xandr to correct it using these steps:

$ cvt 1680 1050
$ xrandr --newmode...
$ xrandr --addmode...
$ xrandr --output...

The result: the resolution increases noticeably, but whenever the right
frame is in focus about 1/3rd of the image is mirrored on the left
frame. And when the left frame is in focus, part of the image is
mirrored on the right frame. This only happens when the resolution is
changed.

This is a serious show-stopper issue. It's hard to tolerate a low
resolution, and the overlapping after increasing the resolution is also
intolerable.

This could be the same bug, but it's vaguely written:

  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=958535

[Bug 1904362] Re: [Wishlist] Disable hostname lookup by default for logwatch service sshd

2021-06-30 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ Logwatch looks up hostnames of every reported IP address, which
+ increases runtime (and thus increases power and network bandwidth usage)
+ especially for high-traffic servers.
+
+ Secondly, the resultant URLs included in Logwatch's report emails can
+ trigger spam filters.
+
+ This change adds an option to turn off ip lookup.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1. Log into an lxc container running groovy or earlier
+ 2. Install logwatch
+$ sudo debconf-set-selections <<< "postfix postfix/mailname string
test.hostname.com"
+$ sudo debconf-set-selections <<< "postfix postfix/main_mailer_type string
'Local only'"
+$ sudo apt-get install -y msmtp msmtp-mta logwatch
+ 3. Force an initial logrotation
+$ sudo /usr/sbin/logrotate -vf /etc/logrotate.conf
+ 4. Run logwatch manually
+$ sudo logwatch --detail Med --service sshd --range "between
+
+ On a system with sshd exposed to the internet that has been up for some
+ time, this may take a considerable amount of time to run
+
+ [Where Problems Could Occur]
+ * Think about what the upload changes in the software. Imagine the change is
+ wrong or breaks something else: how would this show up?
+
+ * It is assumed that any SRU candidate patch is well-tested before
+ upload and has a low overall risk of regression, but it's important
+ to make the effort to think about what ''could'' happen in the
+ event of a regression.
+
+ * This must '''never''' be "None" or "Low", or entirely an argument as to why
+ your upload is low risk.
+
+ * This both shows the SRU team that the risks have been considered,

+
+ [Original Report]
+
By default, logwatch performs a hostname lookup of every IP address
reported in SSHD logs. This has two negative consequences:

  1. If there are lots of IP addresses to lookup, this increases the run time
of logwatch significantly.
  2. If logwatch is set to email logs, some spam filters detect the hostnames
as URLs and will flag the email as spam due to the apparently large number of
links. See
https://serverfault.com/questions/977628/logwatch-emails-marked-as-spam-how-to-stop-reverse-dns-on-bot-hosts/1042679
 .

Following a request for help to disable hostname lookups in sshd...

https://sourceforge.net/p/logwatch/git/ci/88c0d675f10e425faeddd23316c061f425f39a06/

  This wishlist has two requests:
  1. Backport the patch (which is very easy to apply) to logwatch packages in
currently supported LTS versions of Ubuntu. The patch defaults to performing
the IP lookup, so this would not change the behavior of any existing
installations, but it would expose the ability to disable these lookups if
needed.
  2. For future Ubuntu distributions, set the config to disable SSHD IP lookups
by default. This could be accomplished by introducing
/usr/share/logwatch/dist.conf/services/sshd.conf with contents:
  $sshd_ip_lookup = No

[Bug 1934185] Re: gdm "New Window" popup won't go away

2021-06-30 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Judging by your screenshot, this is a bug in Ubuntu Dock. It has nothing
to do with GDM at all.

Also if you'd like to discuss Thunderbird then please open a separate
new bug.

** Package changed: gdm3 (Ubuntu) => gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock (Ubuntu)

** Summary changed:

- gdm "New Window" popup won't go away
+ Ubuntu Dock popup menu won't go away

** Description changed:

Every so often, typically when I'm using Thunderbird, I attempt to use
- GDM to create a new window or something like that, and the "New Window"
- popup comes up, but does not work. Attempts to click on it have no
- effect. I cannot make the popup go away, other than by logging out and
- logging back in again (or rebooting).
+ the dock context menu to create a new window or something like that, and
+ the "New Window" popup comes up, but does not work. Attempts to click on
+ it have no effect. I cannot make the popup go away, other than by
+ logging out and logging back in again (or rebooting).

I did not observe this problem until I installed Ubuntu 21.04, so I
expect it's a glitch that is new to this release.

See attached screenshot for an example of the popup that won't go away.

2021-06-30 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please don't boot into recovery mode while investigating this bug.
Recovery mode is not relevant to the bug.

That said, Ubuntu 20.10 reaches end of life this month so upgrading to
21.04 should probably be the next step. That will also give you kernel
version 5.11 which might hopefully work better...

Re: [Bug 1821462] Re: Ubuntu 19.04 Desktop:slow boot

2021-06-30 Thread Stephen Waines
Hello

Thanks for the email hope you're doing well. Apparently that was a bug in
19.04. I'm on 20.04 and I have exactly no issues.

Thank you for the follow-up.

I actually barely remember reporting this bug.

[Bug 1934201] Re: Installer crashed and fatal error while using sd7 which is the boot located

2021-06-30 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is mostly about finding & fixing problems thus preventing
future users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at

[Bug 1677868] Re: Missing dep8 tests

2021-06-30 Thread Bryce Harrington
This was fixed in debian in release 1.8.18-7 by adding a test to check
the version (-V). While this is a trivial check, since this tool
interacts with specific hardware interfaces directly it may not be easy
to do much more.

stirling:~/pkg/Ipmitool/ipmitool-gu/debian$ ls tests/
control
stirling:~/pkg/Ipmitool/ipmitool-gu/debian$ more tests/control
# smoke test
Test-Command: ipmitool -V
Depends: ipmitool
Restrictions: superficial

These aren't included in bionic or focal though, so may be worth
investigation to include if we SRU this fix.

[Bug 1934199] Re: Switch from Livepatch service to UA client

The current implementation shows "Last check for updates". As far as I can tell
this information is not available via the UA client. It also shows a list of
applied CVE fixes, which again I don't think is available from the UA client.

See attached screenshot of current implementation in 18.04 LTS.

[Bug 1934199] [NEW] Switch from Livepatch service to UA client

2021-06-30 Thread Robert Ancell
Public bug reported:

software-properties currently uses a HTTP over Unix domain socket
service from the livepatch snap to get the status and enable/disable it.
This service is being deprecated with the 'ua' command line tool now
providing this functionality. software-properties also installed the
snap to gain access to this service. This is no longer required as the
'ua' tool does this.

(*) The Livepatch service is a HTTP over Unix domain service running on
livepatchd.sock inside the livepatch snap.

[Bug 1932331] Re: ubuntu_qrt_apparmor: i18n test fails on arm64 Hirsute / Impish

2021-06-30 Thread Steve Beattie
The root issue is likely something in the utf-8 handling code in glibc
on arm64 hirsute and impish; the reproducer is:

  bash -c 'i=210; echo -n $(printf "\\$(printf "%03o" $i)") | od -An -t uC'
  210 138

running valgrind in a default environemnt (so LANG=en_US.UTF-8) turned
up

==46656== ERROR SUMMARY: 0 errors from 0 contexts (suppressed: 0 from 0)
==46653== Conditional jump or move depends on uninitialised value(s)
==46653==at 0x48EA5EC: utf8_internal_loop (loop.c:336)

==46653==by 0x494BF57: mbrtowc (mbrtowc.c:86)
==46653==by 0x17FFBB: command_substitute (in /usr/bin/bash)

and running the test with LANG=C results in the trailing artifact (138)
to not show up.

Not an issue, found that I was using the wrong GPU driver for my hardware,
when I fixed that it fixed the shutdown issue as well as some graphics issues.
