I had a similar issue with Tang on Ubuntu 20.04.2 that caused
tangd.socket not not auto start after most reboots. Simualr to the RHEL
bug linked in th previous comment, I was able to fix it by replacing
"WantedBy=multi-user.target" with "WantedBy=sockets.target" in
/lib/systemd/system/tangd.socket.

I updated the picasso* files from commit:

d79c26779d45 amdgpu: update vcn firmware for green sardine for 21.20

And I still see the issue. It took a while to reproduce: I updated the
firmware (and ran `update-initramfs -u -k all` to get it into the
initramfs) on July 12 and had the laptop turned on since then (closing the
lid to put it to sleep), and today I saw the problem again.

The full dmesg is attached.

[Bug 1936175] Re: apt hook slows down apt - could this be asynchronous?

2021-07-16 Thread Haw Loeung
Something similar was done for checking for the latest Ubuntu release
and updating the MOTD in LP:1836475. It switches the download part into
a systemd timer
(https://launchpadlibrarian.net/505544658/lp1836475-focal.debdiff). So
maybe something similar here where the timer job checks existence and
timestamp of a file and runs if it doesn't exist or is older than a
certain period of time.

Then the apt hook itself would remove that file forcing the systemd
timer job to fire.

[Bug 1934902] Re: [SRU] ubuntu-advantage-tools (27.1 -> 27.2) Xenial, Bionic, Focal, Hirsute

2021-07-16 Thread Chad Smith
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
  This release sports both bug-fixes and new features and we would like to
  make sure all of our supported customers have access to these
  improvements. The notable ones are:

    * Schema of `ua status --format=json` has been updated to include more
  information and better organize the information already present.
    * `yaml` is now a format option for `ua status`
    * `http_proxy` and `https_proxy` configuration fields were added
    - When set, `ua` will use the specified proxy.
    - When set, `ua` will configure snap (if installed) and livepatch
  (if enabled) to use the specified proxy
    * `apt_http_proxy` and `apt_https_proxy` configuration fields were added
    - When set, `ua` will configure apt to use the specified proxy
    * `ua refresh` now accepts optional sub commands: `ua refresh contract`
  and `ua refresh config`. `ua refresh contract` does what `ua refresh`
  used to do. `ua refresh config` re-processes the uaclient config file.
  `ua refresh` with no sub command does the equivalent of `ua refresh
  config && ua refresh contract`.
    * `ua config set key=val` is a new command that edits a key in
  uaclient's config file.
    * `ua config unset key` is a new command that removes the value of a key
  uaclient's config file
    * `ua config show` is a new command that shows the current value of
  uaclient config options.

  See the changelog entry below for a full list of changes and bugs.

  [Test Case]
  The following development and SRU process was followed:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuAdvantageToolsUpdates

  The ubuntu-advantage-tools team will be in charge of attaching the
  artifacts and console output of the appropriate run to the bug. ubuntu-
  advantage-tools team members will not mark ‘verification-done’ until
  this has happened.

  * Automated Test Results

  Attach or link the following automated integration test runs for
ubuntu-advantage-tools on each affected LTS release:

  - lxd.container platform
  - lxd.kvm platform
  - AWS Ubuntu PRO
  - AWS Ubuntu cloud-images (non-Pro)
  - Azure Ubuntu PRO
  - Azure Ubuntu cloud-images (non-Pro)
  - GCP Ubuntu PRO
  - GCP Ubuntu cloud-images (non-Pro)

+ * Additional Manual tests:
+  - upgrade LTS -> LTS attached container + post-upgrade operations
+  - upgrade LTS -> LTS unattached container + post-upgrade operations
+ - package dependency validation verification for distro-info
+
+
  [Regression Potential]
  In order to mitigate the regression potential, the results of the
  aforementioned integration tests are attached to this bug.

  The changes most likely to produce an unexpected regression are the
  changes to the output of `ua status --format=json`. We had (and still
  have) a notice in the output that tools should _not_ rely on the
  structure of the output of this command; however, we know of at least
  one tool that does, and others may as well despite the warning. We have
  avoided changes that we know will break others, but it is possible that
  we broke some unknown integration.

  The behavior of `ua refresh` has slightly changed. It now processes the
  proxy configuration before refreshing the contract. Since the proxy
  configuration is also new with this release, it is unlikely that any
  existing use of `ua refresh` will start doing anything new, unless the
  user also adds the new proxy config fields.

  This update also changes the schema of some of our state that we keep in
  a json file. We're introducing a basic migration mechanism specifically
  to avoid anything breaking if the json file on disk is the old version.
  In the worst case if the migration script doesn't work, then running `ua
  status` with root privileges will overwrite the existing json file with
  the new version, which will resolve any problems.

  [Discussion]

  In this release, we're starting to lay the foundation for more proper
  schema versioning of `ua status` output. In the future when we need to
  change the output again, we plan to properly bump the schema version and
  implement a way to select the version the caller expects. At that time
  we will remove our warning from the output and start to guarantee
  version compatibility.

  [Changelog]

[Bug 1936697] Re: Unlisted dependency

2021-07-16 Thread Computerworm01001
Hello Jessica, and thank you for your rapid response. Your explanation
of the dependency situation with pbuilder and ubuntu-dev-tools is
helpful. However, I don't understand why pbuilder itself is only
suggested and not required by ubuntu-dev-tools. According to the Ubuntu
Packaging Manual(https://packaging.ubuntu.com/html/getting-set-
up.html#set-up-pbuilder), pbuilder is a necessary tool for the packaging
process. I think that pbuilder, and by extension python3-distutils
should both be required by ubuntu-dev-tools.

Kind regards,
Computerworm01001

2021-07-16 Thread Chad Smith
Thanks again for this. We determined we didn't need to have distro-info
in our Build-Depends, which then opened up the possibility to use subst
vars via debian/rules to make more simple Depends on Xenial vs Bionic++.

[Bug 1936697] Re: Unlisted dependency

2021-07-16 Thread Jessica Clarke
pbuilder-dist is a wrapper provided by ubuntu-dev-tools, not pbuilder
itself. Moreover, ubuntu-dev-tools only Suggests: pbuilder, though at
the same time python3-distutils is a pretty tiny package (that's also
fairly useful) so adding that dependency as Recommends: rather than just
Suggests: (to be clear, there isn't even a Suggests: currently) to try
and ensure the wrapper works if you happen to have pbuilder installed
might make sense.

[Bug 1935718] Re: error: failed to register the EFI boot entry: Operation not permitted.

2021-07-16 Thread Steve Langasek
'EFI variables are not supported on this system.'

That's quite interesting, as it implies the installer was booted via
UEFI, but that, once installed, the system is booting Ubuntu via BIOS
fallback compatibility. That is definitely not a case we could detect
from the installer whether you could successfully reboot into Ubuntu or
not!

[Bug 1936697] [NEW] Unlisted dependency

2021-07-16 Thread Computerworm01001
Public bug reported:

I am using pbuilder 0.231build1 on Ubuntu 21.04 Hirsute. I tried to run
"pbuilder-dist hirsute create" and received this error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/pbuilder-dist", line 32, in
import distutils.spawn
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'distutils.spawn'

I tried it three more times and the same thing kept happening, so then I
took a closer look at the error message, and decided to "apt search" for
a Python distutils package in the repos. I found python3-distutils, and
installed it, then I tried running pbuilder-dist again and it succeeded.

Therefore, the fix for this bug is to add python3-distutils as a
dependency of pbuilder.

Thank you and have a good day!

Signed,

[Bug 1934439] Re: Add Ubuntu Pro banner to Livepatch page

2021-07-16 Thread Brian Murray
When considering these changes for an SRU I'd like to see the code
changes landed in Impish so we don't lose track of them for J. That
being said if they are in fact going to be replaced at some point, they
don't necessarily need to be in the archive and just having them
committed to the VCS would be fine with me.

[Bug 1935815] Re: virt-sysprep: /var/lib/libvirt/images/test-domain.img: Permission denied

2021-07-16 Thread Richard Jones
No it asks libvirt for the location of the disks and opens
them directly. Libvirt doesn't really have a way to open
disks remotely (or rather, it does but it's very slow and
clunky and read-only).

[Bug 1890848] Re: 'ptrace trace' needed to readlink() /proc/*/ns/* files on older kernels

2021-07-16 Thread Georgia Garcia
From the commits mentioned that solve the issue, 338d0be437ef was not
available on 4.15 kernels. The cherry-pick was submitted to the kernel
team for approval.

** Description changed:

- Per 'man namespaces':
+ SRU Justification:

- "Permission to dereference or read (readlink(2)) these symbolic links is
- governed by a ptrace access mode PTRACE_MODE_READ_FSCREDS check; see
+ [Impact]
+ Permission 'ptrace trace' is required to readlink() /proc/*/ns/*, when
+ only 'ptrace read' should be required according to 'man namespaces':
+
+ "Permission to dereference or read (readlink(2)) these symbolic links
+ is governed by a ptrace access mode PTRACE_MODE_READ_FSCREDS check; see
  ptrace(2)."

- This suggests that a 'ptrace read' rule should be sufficient to
- readlink() /proc/*/ns/*, which is the case with 5.4.0-42.46-generic
- (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS).
+ [Fix]

- However, on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and 16.04 LTS, 'ptrace trace' is needed.
- Here is a reproducer:
+ Upstream commit 338d0be437ef10e247a35aed83dbab182cf406a2 fixes ptrace
+ read check.

- $ cat ./readlink-ns.c
- #include
- #include
- #include
- #include
- #include
- #include
- #include
+ [Test Plan]

- void usage() {
-   fprintf(stderr, "Usage: readlink-ns -p  -n \n");
- }
+ BugLink contains the source of a binary that reproduces the issue. In
+ summary, it executes readlink() on /proc/*/ns/*. There's also a policy
+ that has only 'ptrace read' permission. When the bug is fixed,
+ execution is allowed.

- int main(int argc, char *argv[])
- {
-   pid_t pid = 0;
-   char *ns = NULL;
-   char path[PATH_MAX] = {};
-   char rpath[PATH_MAX] = {};
-   int c;
+ [Where problems could occur]

-   while ((c = getopt(argc, argv, "hn:p:")) != -1) {
-   switch(c) {
-   case 'n':
-   ns = optarg;
-   break;
-   case 'p':
-   pid = atoi(optarg);
-   break;
-   case 'h':
-   usage();
-   return 0;
-   case '?':
-   usage();
-   return 1;
-   default:
-   return 1;
-   }
-   }
-
-   int n = snprintf(path, sizeof(path), "/proc/%d/ns/%s", pid, ns);
-   if (n < 0 || (size_t)n >= sizeof(path)) {
-   fprintf(stderr, "cannot format string\n");

[Bug 1936688] [NEW] Hirsute update: upstream stable patchset 2021-07-16

2021-07-16 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
   The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
   in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
   demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
   by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
   a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
   stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

[Bug 1935951] Re: [nvidia] HomeOffice & Un-/Docking: X11 crash on resume when docked to multi monitor

2021-07-16 Thread Steve
Just an update:

I can reproduce this problem with Ubuntu 20.04, stock Gnome and latest
NVidia beta driver 470.42.01 as suggested by X11 maintainers.

Gnome doesn't crash, but just restarts the desktop.

The var/crash folder is also empty, and EnterVT errors are printed in
syslog

I posted at NVIDIA the issue:
https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/linux-for-homeoffice-docking-undocking-produces-ee-nvidia-0-failed-to-enter-vt-mode-initialization-failed/183481/2

I observed, that when the monitors and dockingstations are powercycled,
the sporadic desktop crash on resume ahppens almost every 2nd time.
MIght be the monitors just need just more time the be ready for
X11/nvidia??

[Bug 1909814] Re: Keyboard not working

2021-07-16 Thread Manuel Krause
Yeah, it's really nice that the responsible kernel & distro people
picked up the fix that soon.

According to the kernel Changelogs, it's in v5.4.132, v5.10.50, v5.12.17
and v5.13.2 and upcoming 5.14.

I also want to thank you all again for helping to find courage and a way on how
to get this done and a little lucky testing fortune!
Let's hope there won't be drawbacks for other machines.

Cheers !

[Bug 1935718] Re: error: failed to register the EFI boot entry: Operation not permitted.

2021-07-16 Thread Steve Langasek
It's good to know that Ubuntu boots ok after installation in spite of
this error; however, in the general case there is no way for us to know
that it will.

Can you attach the output of 'efibootmgr -v' from your installed and
booted Ubuntu system? This may provide insight to how we can improve
the handling of various corner cases.

[Bug 1935901] Re: Braswell video locks up under gnome-shell

2021-07-16 Thread Jerry Quinn
Hi, there's a crash report mentioned on this page:

https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/241a8d330b8560e5d29b49b2d8df1a9340834364d1e9930a70caae16e29bf446d33032781384b132361e219d11002feddb39eb224ef4a8725b7f4651d988de57

but I don't have permission to follow the link to the actual crash
report.

I originally tried using this box with X11, but I could lock up the
screen regularly. So I tried running under wayland, which seems to be
more stable for this machine. The above crash report is from kodi-
wayland. When I look at what's running, I see Xwayland, which I assume
is wayland running with the x layer on top?

When I log in after a restart (too many of them), I have gnome on
wayland chosen.

[Bug 1936682] [NEW] Fix kernel panic caused by legacy devices on AMD platforms

2021-07-16 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
When a legacy device is only 32bit DMA capable and it's in the same
IOMMU group with iommu_v2 capable devices, the device in question will
be forced to use identity mapping and triggers kernel panic on DMA
operation because it can't do 64bit DMA.

[Fix]
Keep swiotlb enabled so legacy devices can do 64bit DMA. This is also
how Intel and ARM64 platforms deal with legacy devices.

[Test]
Boot an affected system. Kernel panic in Realtek WiFi driver's probe
routine.

After the patch is applied, the system can work normally.

[Where problems could occur]
The default swiotlb uses 64MB memory, so if the system doesn't have any
legacy device, there are 64MB ram less for the system to use.

2021-07-16 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
In i386 build log I see

Searching for duplicated docs in dependency libroken18-heimdal...
  symlinking changelog.Debian.gz in libwind0-heimdal to file in
libroken18-heimdal

I don't see something similar in adm64.

As if the trimming of the changelog entries got done before doing
symlinks, instead of after.

I would have hoped that all packages are processed and things got
symlinked first, then trimmed, in the same way on every arch.

Lots of sadness.

[Bug 1936669] Re: Software Update won't install version 21.04

2021-07-16 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1936669/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1936679] [NEW] ubuntu-drivers --gpgpu is not installing -server packages

2021-07-16 Thread Jeff Lane
Public bug reported:

Discovered while testing the ubuntu-drivers-common package in -proposed
for bug LP:1898601

While waiting on bionic to deploy for verification, something was
bugging me about Focal verification from the other day so I re-deployed
a DL380 with 4x T4 GPGPUs with Focal and added u-d-c from proposed.
What I missed when verifying the other day was that it actually isn't
installing the -server package on my server in gpgpu mode. After
chatting a bit with Alberto, --gpgpu is supposed to install the nvidia-
driver-VER-server package. Instead, the version in -proposed is actually
installing nvidia-driver-VER which is incorrect.

Attached is a tarball from a fresh focal install that includes the
output when doing 'ubuntu-drivers --gpgpu install' and 'ubuntu-drivers
--gpgpu debug' after installing the driver.
