[Bug 1933034] Re: FTBFS in impish due to test failures

2021-07-22 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
It is already clear that eventually once all FTBFS are resolved all
these need to be tested combined from proposed. So please combine
"dulwich, silver-platter, breezy-debian, breezy, lintian-brush" as
triggers together for all the tests of them.

It looks like this might be a Panel Self Refresh bug. PSR was disabled

[Bug 1937127] Re: Gnome-shell animations smoother when external monitor is connected

2021-07-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Using 'Ubuntu on Xorg' instead of 'Ubuntu' also helps. Because the
former having more layers and less internal blocking actually dabbles in
triple buffering sometimes by accident. Although I'm not sure if that's
the reason it's smoother or just Xorg adds extra GPU load.

Since the default 'Ubuntu' session in 20.04 was Xorg and in 21.04 onward
it is Wayland, that would explain a perceived performance drop that some
users may notice.

[Bug 1936831] Re: libvirt ACPI on unsupported machine

2021-07-22 Thread Enoch Leung
Hi Dann,

Thanks for looking into it. I am trying pi 3b emulation at the moment,
as I want to try things out with VMs instead of the real SBC. My target
is to try things out before deploying to the real SBC, hence why I want
to use emulation of specific machine type. I see that most tutorial
online make use of directly calling qemu-system-aarch64 instead of
managing it via libvirt.

I also looked into using machine=virt: it means if I use a machine=virt
VM, I should use a distro that support ARM with a EFI bootloader like
ubuntu-server, right? that means only distro supporting UEFI would
work... maybe I can try to move the EFI binaries across distros, though
in iteslf it is another form of usage, not the one that I'd mentioned
above, and it also means those distro may not work "out of box".

[Bug 1937321] Re: Xorg freeze

2021-07-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1937127] Re: Gnome-shell animations smoother when external monitor is connected

2021-07-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The issue has always existed. But with such a sharp edge between smooth
and stuttering any slightest change in the GUI can push it over the
edge. Also a little annoyingly, as we optimize more code it can
sometimes make the problem *worse* as the GPU becomes less loaded and
less likely to up-clock to smoothness.

Triple buffering is really the only solution that works with all
drivers. Although sometimes you can tweak the graphics driver to change
its clock scaling behaviour, I don't know if there's a more elegant
workaround possible for Intel.

[Bug 1937324] [NEW] hang booting kernel after software reboot

2021-07-22 Thread Gregory Smith
Public bug reported:

After issuing a software reboot, the machine hangs at a black screen
after the grub prompt, before the kernel boots. This lasts at least five
minutes, with the processor fans spun all the way up. If I remove quiet
and nosplash there is no text, the screen is completely black.

I have tried various reboot= options but it behaves the same way (when
it reboots--some of those options do not reboot at all). If I add
acpi=off it will boot reliably, but with acpi=ht the same problem
occurs.

Once at the black screen, I can press the reset button, and after going
through grub, the machine boots successfully. It also boots successfully
on a cold boot.

I am using UEFI, but I had the same problem with BIOS boot.

[Bug 1937325] [NEW] Jack clients have segmentation fault when trying to connect to jackd

2021-07-22 Thread Len Ovens
Public bug reported:

Steps to show this bug. Start jackd either as jackd or jackdbus (with
jack_control). run jack_lsp from the command line to show jackd's port.
Jack_lsp will segfault. Other jack clients will have similar problems.
This is specific to jackd2 1.1.19, jackd 1.1.17 does not have this
problem.

[Bug 1933523] Re: Temporary installer password and key fingerprints are not printed with latest impish daily ISOs

2021-07-22 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
** Description changed:

- Using the latest Impish daily ISO (timestamp) 2021-06-24 I faced the
- situation that I didn't got a temporary installation password not the
- key fingerprints at the end of the installer boot-up process.
+ [impact]
+ cloud-init no longer puts the password of a user with a RANDOM password
anywhere subiquity can find it, so while the password chosen ends up printed to
the console, subiquity cannot display it from within the UI as it used to.
+
+ [regression potential]
+ If something goes wrong here, it's possible that subiquity will no longer be
able to display the password for the installer user at all, which will make
continuing the install via SSH impossible (this is very important for
installing on z/vm)
+
+ [test case]
+ Make an ISO with this change and boot it and check that the installer
password is available in the UI. Make a s390x ISO, boot it in z/vm and check
that the installer password is displayed on the console.
+
+ [original description]
+ Using the latest Impish daily ISO (timestamp) 2021-06-24 I faced the
situation that I didn't got a temporary installation password not the key
fingerprints at the end of the installer boot-up process.

Hence I am not able to perform an installation from remote via ssh.
However, subiqity is started at the console (e.g. Integrated ASCII console)
and an installation can be successfully completed there, but a console
installation is not in all cases possible, for example with z/VM guests.

As one can read between the lines I tried this on s390x (Integrated
ASCII console and z/VM), but 'paride' tried the same on amd64 and ran
into the same symptoms, so it does not seem to be architecture specific.

This must have happened recently, since I already was able to do ssh-based
Impish installations on s390x in the past (for example with the daily ISO from
06-14-2021).
  ___

This is not the case for the 20.04 dailies - I can do remote ssh installation
with the 20.04 live daily ISOs.
  ___

With Impish on s390x the kernel parameter 'quiet' is still set by
  default.

[Bug 1888497] Re: Booting the install system does not always succeed, hence a remote ssh login is not always possible

2021-07-22 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
** Description changed:

- From time to time (sporadically and very rarely - maybe in one or two
- attempt out of twenty) I face a situation where the installer system (on
- s390x) does not boot-up completely.
+ [impact]
+ When there is a serial console configured, there was a unit cycle
+
+ serial-getty@$TTY.service -> cloud-final.service -> multi-user.target ->
+ getty.target -> serial-getty@$TTY.service
+
+ (or something like that)
+
+ Depending on which unit systemd kills to resolve the cycle, this can
+ result in cloud-init never completing which leads to the subiquity
+ server waiting forever for it and nothing useful can be done (other than
+ restarting and hoping for better luck next time).
+
+ Because subiquity itself waits for cloud-init (and this has been true
+ for a long time now) there is no need for serial-getty@$TTY.service to
+ wait on cloud-final.service.
+
+ [regression potential]
+ This change results in shuffling the systemd units around a fair bit, but the
new arrangement has been tested in devel for a few months now and works well
there. It's also much more straightforward than the current setup.
+
+ [test case]
+ This is a bit tricky as it's an intermittent failure. Basically, boot the
live installer with a serial console configured a bunch of times and (10?)
check that the installer starts up properly each time.
+

+ From time to time (sporadically and very rarely - maybe in one or two attempt

This happened to me in the past already, but since it happened only one or
twice I thought it's due to resource constraints on the system or so.
But since I faced it now again on LPAR (before it was on z/VM), I'm opening
this ticket now.

In the latest case I used the focal daily live image from the 20th of

[Bug 1937322] [NEW] RTX 3080 high idle power draw

2021-07-22 Thread Sebastian Heiden
Public bug reported:

With the most recent nvidia-driver-470 package my RTX 3080 is stuck in
performance level 4, which prevents the GDDR6X memory from downclocking.

This causes the card to draw almost 100W during idle operation, which is
unacceptable.

With the previous nvidia-driver-460, the card would properly enter the
lower power states and downclock the memory, which lowered the idle
power draw to about 30-40W.

[Bug 1926938] Re: Recent mainline packages are built with Hirsuite 21.04, not Focal 20.04 LTS

2021-07-22 Thread zolstarym
Hardware compatibility means that I need 5.11 and up, but this was
keeping me from getting newer kernels with up to date security. I am
kinda shocked that it is apparently being ignored by devs.

Thanks to tuxinvader, as builds on that ppa seem to work well with mint.

[Bug 1937321] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2021-07-22 Thread sheepscrossing
Public bug reported:

System freezes after I close the lid on the laptop and leave it closed
overnight. It doesn't respond to any key presses or mouse clicks including
Ctrl-Alt+F4. my only recourse is to force the power off. Sometimes it has the
"suspend" screen showing but mostly it's just black. The Power settings -Dim
screen when inactive = yes
  Blank screen = never
Wifi and Bluetooth can be turned off to save power = yes
Automatic suspend on battery power = yes
Power button action = Power off

[Bug 1936698] Re: check-new-release-gtk crashed with ValueError in require_version(): Namespace Gtk is already loaded with version 4.0

2021-07-22 Thread Brian Murray
** Description changed:

- I think you know what's going on here.
+ Impact
+ --
+ check-new-release-gtk is crashing on Ubuntu 21.04 if gir1.2-gtk-4.0 is
installed on the system and based off the number of crashes at the Ubuntu Error
Tracker that seems to be a rather popular package. The crash would prevent
users from being notified about Ubuntu 21.10 when it becomes available.

+ Test Case
+ -
+ On an Ubuntu 21.04 system
+ 1) sudo apt-get install gir1.2-gtk-4.0
+ 2) Run /usr/lib/ubuntu-release-upgrader/check-new-release-gtk
+
+ Observe a Traceback with the contents
+
+ "check-new-release-gtk crashed with ValueError in require_version():
Namespace Gtk is already loaded with version 4.0"
+ or
+ "AttributeError(\"%r object has no attribute %r\" % (\nAttributeError:
''gi.repository.Gtk'' object has no attribute ''Container''"
+
+ Where Problems May Occur
+
+ check-new-release-gtk could crash entirely if the additional code is
incorrectly written (i.e. there's a syntax error) however the test case does
cover that.

[Bug 1936831] Re: libvirt ACPI on unsupported machine

2021-07-22 Thread dann frazier
Hi Enoch,

Christian asked me to take a peek at this but, unfortunately, what
you're trying to do here is outside of my wheelhouse. Generally when I'm
running KVM ARM guests, I just use the "virt" model regardless of what
the underlying kit is. The virt model provides a standard UEFI/KVM
system (w/ or w/o ACPI). Can you confirm that what you're after is to
create an accelerated system that looks like a raspi3b, or do you just
want an accelerated ARM virtual machine on your raspi board? The latter
should be more straightforward.

[Bug 1937115] Re: Unable to boot/install Impish daily in UEFI boot mode

2021-07-22 Thread Chris Guiver
Another user has reported issue (yesterday) on askubu

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1353382/any-ubuntu-21-10-iso-download-
that-isnt-corrupted

Picture of screen end-user reported can be seen at
https://i.stack.imgur.com/oeYYg.jpg

The picture fits what @Leok describes I believe; which is different to
the sony vaio I used - however as the sony quickly moved to the next
boot device (ssd) it booted a prior installed image meaning I never got
a good look at it.

[Bug 1937255] Re: Lenovo V15 Touchpad H/w not detected

2021-07-22 Thread Seth Arnold
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1937316] Re: Cannot download source packages provided by Ubuntu ESM

2021-07-22 Thread Rob Savoury
An update is that this seems to be due the fact that only root has
permissions to /etc/apt/auth.conf.d/90ubuntu-advantage which is
evidently the critical file required to authenticate with the Ubuntu ESM
servers. Running "sudo apt-get source" instead does work.

So perhaps this is how the ubuntu-advantage-tools package is intended to
work rather than a "bug" as such. However, normally one does not have to
run "apt-get source" as root for it to work, so this is certainly
distinct functionality with ubuntu-advantage-tools than in general for a
Ubuntu system.

[Bug 1937317] [NEW] Telegram window doesn't move on first start

2021-07-22 Thread Binjomin Szanto-Varnagy
Public bug reported:

On Xubuntu 18.04.5 LTS, only xfwm 4.12.5 is available, without updates.

This causes Telegram window unable to move or resize on first start. See
details here: https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfwm4/-/issues/569#note_34962

They claim they already corrected the bug.

Please issue an update option or some other solution (here someone more
of an expert than me said the keyword "backport":
