[Bug 1937926] Re: Realtek 8821C PCIe Wifi driver problem, wifi speed very slow on connecting to 2.4ghz network.

2021-07-24 Thread Soumadeep Sarkar
** Description changed:

I am using the Realtek 8821C PCIE Wifi driver that is provided in the
Additional drivers app of Ubuntu. When I connect to a 2.4 ghz network,
the internet speed is very slow, it rarely goes above 4mbps. But the
driver works fine when connected to a 5ghz network, easily reaching
speeds of over 80mbps. I don't think it is a problem of my wifi router
because in Windows OS running on the same laptop, I mostly get speeds of
around 40mbps when connected to the 2.4 ghz network.

  1. What is the full computer model number?
  Ans: HP Laptop 15s-eq0500AU.
  2. If you update your BIOS to the newest version following the guide here,
does this change anything?
  Ans: No.
  3. Regarding your wireless Access Point (WAP):
+ 3c. What wireless connection type are you using (802.11ac, 802.11n 150/300,
802.11g, etc.)?
+ Ans: 802.11n
+ 3d. If you switch to a different wireless type (802.11g or 802.11n if you are
using 802.11g) does this change anything?
+ Ans: Yes, in the 5ghz 802.11ac type, the speed is very normally very good.
+ 3f. In order to understand the wireless environment your WAP is working in,
please provide the output of the following terminal command:
+
+ sudo iw dev wlan0 scan | grep -i "ds parameter set"
+ Ans: [sudo] password for soumadeepsarkar1:

release)? If so, what release specifically did it last work with? If you do not
know, could you please test for this in the earliest release of Ubuntu that is
supported as per Ubuntu Releases?
Ans: I don't know if it is a regression and I cannot test for this in another
release of Ubuntu.

[Bug 1937924] Re: kernel upgrade via apt 5.11.0.1015-raspi kills the OS on Raspberry Pi4B

2021-07-24 Thread The Pthyister
I tried swapping different setups that I have, I've now tried it with
two different firmware versions, one from May and the other from 6th of
July (which is the most current version). It's either the "cursor of
doom"-screen (on two of the Xubuntu desktop installs) or the "rainbow
screen of death" (on the fresh 64-bit Ubuntu Server).

On the one that boots into the blinking cursor, none of low level boot
bypass keys work. The disk utilization led stays.

RPiOS and other OS's work just fine, and both of those systems that had
been working previously, had been running without much troubles since
21.04 hirsute came out.

Please advice, as, like I just noticed, this has the possibility to
affect every single user installing the 5.11.0.1015-raspi update from
the apt packages.

I'd need all the help restoring my bootloader to those two of my
systems, they worked perfectly well and I wouldn't want to ditch and
rebuild them. :(

[Bug 1937924] [NEW] kernel upgrade via apt 5.11.0.1015-raspi kills the OS on Raspberry Pi4B

2021-07-24 Thread The Pthyister
Public bug reported:

OK, so I've already killed three RPi4B Ubuntu installs (1 Ubuntu Server,

firmware and especially the kernel into version 5.11.0.1015 -- I've
already written a comprehensive summary on the issue on AskUbuntu's side
@ https://askubuntu.com/questions/1353872/raspberry-
pi4b-64bit-21-04-5-11-kernel-trees-1014-raspi-1015-raspi-apt

The Ubuntu Server one was a fresh one and I literally did nothing else
except apt update and apt upgrade straight out of the box from an image
that I etched using the latest version of 'rpi-imager'. I ran the OS
from a never-before-used, fresh USB stick as my attempt to get some sort
of a working boot loader that I could then try to rsync/copy to the boot
parts of the other Ubuntu builds that were broken by this very same
update. No such luck! I would expect a _lot_ of broken OS installs
headed your way; I did try to contact the devs two weeks ago when my
first system got fried due to getting the update from the 'hirsute-
proposed' repository ... Geez.

Under the /var/log/ of my first fried OS, I have absolutely no errors or
warnings, and I've included i.e. my 'dmesg' output as for the installed
stuff here: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/SXnzTTsNtS/ -- that indeed was
the last time the system booted.

I'm really in a tough spot due to this because now I've got two dead
systems and no apparent solution to fix it! :(

[Bug 1937922] [NEW] gtk4 not built for i386

2021-07-24 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to enable GTK 4 when building ibus:

https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu/ibus2/+packages

Up to now ibus has been built also on i386, but gtk4 has not been built
on that arch, so the i386 build fails due to missing build dependencies.

Is it time to stop building ibus on i386? Or can we build gtk4 on i386
(it was successfully built on Debian's i386)?

At least some step needs to be taken.

[Bug 1937917] [NEW] Allow running specific commands / control of a program (e.g. Kodi) locked to

2021-07-24 Thread mYnDstrEAm
Public bug reported:

I'd like to lock a Linux/Debian system to one program (a password-
protected kiosk mode for Kodi).
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/657568/how-to-lock-a-linux-
debian-system-to-one-program-a-password-protected-kiosk-mod

One way to solve it would be for xtrlock still allowing Kodi commands /
navigating Kodi (but nothing else).

This is why I'm requesting this feature. If there other places to file a
feature-request or some other possible way to achieve the Kodi kiosk
mode please let me know, thanks.

[Bug 1937916] [NEW] xrandr --scale confines mouse to native solution on secondary sceen

2021-07-24 Thread Johannes Kalliauer
Public bug reported:

`--scale 0.5 --filter nearest` works on the internal screen, however not
on the external screen (via USB-C with Display-Port)

`xrandr --output eDP-1 --primary --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --scale 0.5
--filter nearest --dpi 141 --output DP-1-3 --mode 3840x2160 --scale .5
--pos 960x0 --filter nearest`

results in a display of the solution 1920x1080 (upper left quater),
however the mouse uses the whole 3840x2160-space, leading to an offset
between mouse and display.

However this does not occur on the internal screen.

[Bug 1937915] [NEW] kio duplicates data got via mtp module

2021-07-24 Thread Vyacheslav
Public bug reported:

The problem

I've installed latest LTS Kubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa) with all latest
updates. When I tried to see pictures on my phone connected via USB via
via "mtp" protocol in "Gwenview" application I've found that I can't
open all but the first picture in a directory. Precisely:

1. Open in Gwenview application a remote directory via mtp with small previews;
2. Click on the first picture to see it with full size - it works;
3. Click on any other picture to see it with full size - either black
rectangular "error loading metadata" info is displayed;
4. Right-click on the picture to open it in Okular or another Gwenview instance
- it works.

There is no such problem with looking at local directories.

Expected behavior - to be able to see all pictures in full size from
'preview' mode in a single instance of Gwenview.

Investigation and resolution

The bug seems to be fixed in Kubuntu 21.04. And there is no such
erroneous behavior while viewing local pictures.

Firstly I thought it's a bug in Gwenview and started to debug it. But
after debugging I've observed that as long as the application creates
more than one KIO::TransferJob objects as many copies of the same chunks
of data came via each next transfer object. Thus the only first created
transfer object works as expected. That's why I could observe only the
first picture in my phone's directory. And this is the reason to believe
that Gwenview is not the root cause of the behavior.

I've created a trivial console application to get the same file twice
from a phone and got the same erroneous behavior. I've taken a look at
all commits in upstream source code (https://github.com/KDE/kio-extras)
between versions used in 20.04 and 21.04 Kubuntu for mtp module and
found that f4e0183adfd8bf4fd6b9f8e7edea6cb35362c206 change looks related
to my problem. I've got source code for v19.12.3 tag of kio-extras
packages, applied that commit together with
94e7b64325f9e71196a19fb5bc396b9e82f88fc7 and placed resulted mtp.so and
kmtpd.so modules in my system. The bug has gone.

[Bug 1937914] [NEW] Laptop Monitor Turns off During Startup

2021-07-24 Thread Andrew White
Public bug reported:

While starting the my laptop

(Computer Model: HP Probook 450 G6
ProdID 5YH15UT#ABA
Memory: 15.5 GB
Processor: Intel Core i7-8565U CPU @ 1.80GHz x 8
Graphics: NV118 / Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 620 (WHL GT2)
Disk Capacity: 256.1 GB)

which runs

(OS Name: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS
OS Type: 64-bit
GNOME Version: 3.36.8
Windowing System: X11)

the monitor turns off as soon as Ubuntu loads. The OS loads as normal
and my external monitor still works, but my laptop monitor does not. I
was able to fix the problem by pressing ESC as soon as the HP logo
appears during start-up, then selecting "Advanced Ubuntu Options", then
choosing an older version of Ubuntu (currently that's ...5.4.0-48...,
while I believe the latest version is ...5.8.0-66...).

It seems clear that this problem is caused by a bug that was introduced
in one of the more recent updates (...5.8.0-59..., maybe?). I am not at
all sure that the problem is in xorg; the package identification webpage
just suggested that, if the monitor is blank when I would expect to see
the Ubuntu logo during startup, then I should say that the relevant
package is xorg.

I am more than happy to run additional diagnostics that you would
recommend if that would help you diagnose and fix the problem.

Thank you.

[Bug 1936746] Re: Segmentation fault on 21.04 Hirsute Hippo

2021-07-24 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
Thanks for taking your time to report this issue and help making Ubuntu
better.

I can confirm the segmentation fault on 21.04. I've also found a
corresponding Debian bug, and have attached a bug watch.

Btw, when reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. This automatically
adds information like version numbers and Ubuntu release. You can learn
more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 1937897] Re: GPIO error logs in start and dmesg aftzer update of kernel

2021-07-24 Thread Ole Jon Bjørkum
EDIT: To clarify both times these lines come they refer to "gpiochip1"
(so not 2 different ones).

I started getting the same 3 lines of errors TWICE at boot, with the now
latest official 5.8 HWE kernel. Without "splash", just "quiet" set for
GRUB it also shows on my monitors when booting. Honestly seems to slow
down boot too (I mean I have 5.5 GB/s R/W NVMes and it can get to GDM in
maybe less than 2 seconds).

WHAT HAPPENED:

After my 20.04.2 (HWE) kernel was updated From:

linux-image-5.8.0-59-generic

To:

linux-image-5.8.0-63-generic

If I boot the former (*-59) or any older, I don't see the below errors
TWICE. With the latter (*-63) I do. Seems to be little to none
information about this. I only find it in the Linux source code. Is it
something new in Linux?

Running journalctl -b (now) first 3 lines of errors come after early
kernel NVME(s) preparation, but have just checked that once (now). Seems
random as the next exact same 3 lines come below something completely
different in the log. But again system can boot in 2 secs, however seems
slower with these in fact.

$ journalctl -b

RED LINES:
kernel: gpio gpiochip1: (gpio_aaeon): tried to insert a GPIO chip with zero
lines
gpiochip_add_data_with_key: GPIOs 0..-1 (gpio_aaeon) failed to register, -22

YELLOW LINE:
gpio-aaeon: probe of gpio-aaeon.0 failed with error -22

... and again later in the log:

RED LINES:
kernel: gpio gpiochip1: (gpio_aaeon): tried to insert a GPIO chip with zero
lines
gpiochip_add_data_with_key: GPIOs 0..-1 (gpio_aaeon) failed to register, -22

YELLOW LINE:
gpio-aaeon: probe of gpio-aaeon.0 failed with error -22

---

Apart from that everything works. No new hardware has been added.

Pretty generic system (hefty CPU but still X570 + Zen2):

* ASUS X570 AM4 Motherboard ("Prime Pro")
* Ryzen Zen2 3950X 16C/32T CPU
* ASUS Radeon RX 5500 XT 8 GB OC GPU
* 2 NVMes and 3 HDDs (total 12 TB)
* No special peripherals

Happens really early at boot, so seems low-level.

[Bug 1937900] [NEW] Nautilus stuck during search, could not establish a connection to tracker

2021-07-24 Thread bizmate
Public bug reported:

When starting Nautilus I am performing a search and get no response, the
app is stuck/unresponsive and the search does not work.

When i start it in debug mode i see:
```
$ G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all nautilus
available...
```

And when i kill tracker with `tracker reset -etracker reset -e` then the
search suddenly works

I am not a dev but in this case I would timeout tracker for being unresponsive
and just get on with the search without it.

[Bug 1935082] Re: [MIR] egl-wayland

2021-07-24 Thread Kyle McKay
** Description changed:

  MIR Template:

  [Availability]
Already available in universe now for impish with the minimum required 1.1.7
version.

  [Rationale]
- The forthcoming nvidia 470 driver release will end up in restricted and will
suffer a performance penalty when used with Xwayland unless egl-wayland version
1.1.7 (or later) has also been installed.
+ Past nvidia driver releases are in restricted. If the 470 release follows
the pattern and ultimately ends up in restricted it will suffer a performance
penalty when used with Xwayland unless egl-wayland version 1.1.7 (or later)
from outside the main+restricted repository set (universe) has also been
installed.

  [Security]
No search results found for CVS, oss-security.
No Ubuntu CVE results for egl-wayland or variations thereof.
The egl-wayland package installs a library with mode 0644 for use by the
nvidia egl driver.
While this does not seem to present security issues of its own, the library
will be loaded and used by the nvidia egl driver and may therefore share any
security concerns applicable to that driver.

  [Quality assurance]
Once installed, use of egl-wayland by the nvidia egl driver is automatic, the
single configuration file
(/usr/share/egl/egl_external_platform.d/10_nvidia_wayland.json) installed by
the egl-wayland package makes that happen.
There is no configuration or other end user interaction. The package itself
does not have any UI of its own.
The current universe version of the package comes from the upstream Debian
package.
There is a debian/watch file present.

  [Dependencies]
  The required dependencies (libc6, libwayland-client, libwayland-server) are
already present in main.

  [Standards compliance]
Appears to comply with both the FHS and Debian Policy standards. The
"/usr/share/egl/egl_external_platform.d/" directory is not specifically
mentioned by those standards, but that directory location is required by the
installed "10_nvidia_wayland.json" file in order for the nvidia egl driver to
load the library that the egl-wayland package installs.

  [Maintenance]
The egl-wayland package is a small package with few dependencies that is
already being maintained upstream by Debian.
Since it only installs a library and a config file and does not have any of
its own UI, there are no i18n or l10n support issues.

  [Background information]

- The libnvidia-gl 470 drivers have not yet been officially released.
+ The libnvidia-gl 470 drivers have been officially released as of
+ 2021-07-19 and have since become available in multiverse.

- However, there is a 470.42.01 BETA available.
-
- And Alberto Milone has been kind enough to provide an experimental
- PPA build of the 470 BETA for testing:

The first item is easily accomplished with something like this:

  /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-drm.conf:
  options nvidia-drm modeset=1

For the second item, commit 763f4fb278 in the freedesktop.org xserver

For the third item it appears that libxcb version 1.13 or later has

the message is still very quick; the screen quickly being cleared and
"Attempting to decrypt master key..." from the last successful QA-test
install of Lubuntu impish on this box.

The thumb-drive boots normally on other boxes I've tested as usual...

[Bug 1895211] Re: package friendly-recovery 0.2.41 [modified: lib/recovery-mode/recovery-menu] failed to install/upgrade: installed friendly-recovery package post-installation script subprocess return

2021-07-24 Thread Pelam
It seems that it could be related to the stuff mentioned in this post:
https://askubuntu.com/a/943425/117278

sudo update-grub gave a strange error that seems maybe related:

/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: failed to get canonical path of
`rpool/ROOT/ubuntu_3q4whe'.

However, doing as suggested in the linked post:
ZPOOL_VDEV_NAME_PATH=1 update-grub

succeeded. Afterwards update-grub works without the env variable...
strange

[Bug 1934209] Re: Dell dock USB4 module need fwupd 1.5.11

2021-07-24 Thread Yuan-Chen Cheng
** Description changed:

need focal/fwupd 1.5.11 to support this

  Ref: https://github.com/fwupd/fwupd/releases/tag/1.5.11

Note: this version shall work well with shim with sbat.
Note: for focal, we also need to upgrade jcat to make it work.

  [Impact]

   * We need to support Dell USB4 Dock and based on the fwupd design,
need to upgrade the version to support it.

   * This new version will also enable certain vendors to upgrade
intel-microcode by fwupd. Some security updates of intel-microcode
does introduce regresssion because it's not tested across enough
CPU family. Vendors can do more tests give they have access to
those machines and have access to those new microcodes with
     security patches.

   * Will follow the new policy to do this SRU exception.
     https://wiki.ubuntu.com/firmware-updates

  [Test Plan]

   * Full standard verification test listed in
     https://wiki.ubuntu.com/firmware-updates

- * Install a sbat enable shim, turned on secure boot and make sure
-the new fwupd firmware upgrade efi still work fine.
+  * Install a sbat enable shim, turned on secure boot and make sure
+    the new fwupd firmware upgrade efi still work fine.

   * Will also invite the component vendor to test the new supported
docking when the new fwupd exists in the proposed channel.
They already started to use the one in my ppa on focal given
LTS release is the HWE project target.

  [Where problems could occur]

   * If it passed the verification procedure in the policy, I believe
it shall already cover most cases.

  [Other Info]

-  * This suppose to fix several bugs. OEM team will try to test
+  * This suppose to fix several bugs. OEM team will test
     those along the way.
