[Bug 1939238] Re: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
fsck -y isn't *always* the right answer. The reason why the boot scripts don't just run fsck -y automatically is that sometimes a human with judgement can do better by manually running fsck instead of just blindly answering yes to all questions. For "users who are not competent" (your words, not mine), yes this may be beyond their capabilities. But there is a reason why some jobs, like for example, fixing airplane engines, requires people who are "competent", and certified to be so.If you have a full set of backups, then sure, you could try using fsck -y, and if that leads to unacceptable data loss, it's possible that you could recover more data by selective use of answering some fsck questions, and using debugfs. The problem is that "users who are not competent" are also not likely to be doing regular backups of their data. :-( -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1939238 Title: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY. [Bug 1919266] Re: kubuntu hirsute daily QA-test install & no background at first login
I saw request #6 last night & zsync'd the current impish daily & did a QA-test install on dc7700 (http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/424/builds/234968/testcases/1301/results/) This is IMPISH and NOT HIRSUTE, but I expected the issue to be there.. On install, & post-install this issue did NOT re-occur. I adjusted displays to match my setup, logout & login etc. and the issue was not re-created. My plan (assuming re-created issue) was then to add requested kernel (comment #6) to see if re-occurs but no point given I've been unable to re-create issue. (I see no point installing hirsute for testing) Note: this box has had recent (graphic) issues with Kubuntu & Ubuntu only, neither of which I'm testing very regularly any-more (box is fine with Lubuntu where I test most; I don't recall issues with Xubuntu either but I'm rarely testing there either) It's now the morning later & the issue is still not evident on booting the system. [Bug 1939347] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 freeze since kernel 5.11
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode. To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1939347/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package. Seen by redhat and fixed in postfix-3.5.9-11.el9: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1984045. "closefrom is a new function in glibc 2.34. It follows the Solaris precedent, so it returns void (not int). At the minimum, Postfix needs to adjust its return type. The only caller of the function does not use the returned value anyway." Fedora's patch attached, I've not tested it yet. ** Patch added: "postfix-3.6.2-glibc-234-build-fix.patch" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/postfix/+bug/1939353/+attachment/5516979/+files/postfix-3.6.2-glibc-234-build-fix.patch ** Tags added: ftbfs -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1939353 Title: FTBFS 3.5.6-1build1 with gcc-11 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/postfix/+bug/1939353/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1939306] Re: latest shim-signed fails on Lenovo T480 with Secure boot
Experienced the same issue on a Thinkpad X1 Gen7, it stops at a blank screen. While experimenting even disabling SecureBoot was not a reliable workaround. With "mokutil --set-verbosity true", the stack ends at the same line as demonstrated by the OP in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shim- signed/+bug/1939306/+attachment/5516850/+files/20210809_132455.jpg . Problem appeared after upgrade vom shim-signed:amd64 1.47+15.4-0ubuntu2 to 1.50+15.4-0ubuntu7 and was solved by downgrading to 1.46+15.4-0ubuntu1 (the 1.47 version is currently not available, Launchpad lists only 1.50 and 1.46). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1939306 Title: latest shim-signed fails on Lenovo T480 with Secure boot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shim-signed/+bug/1939306/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1938626] Re: PPS API broken
A possible cause for this bug has occurred to me, but I wouldn't know where in the kernel code to check for this. Note: When I talk about a control line, I am using the DTE, i.e computer, end connector reference. In years past there was no standardization for which line on a serial port carried the PPS signal for a GPS and it was a mix of DCD, RTS, and occasionally CTS. Current commercial devices, such as the one I have, seem to mostly use CTS. Is is possible the current kernel code is not looking at ALL those lines for PPS? This would also explain why you have not gotten lots of bug reports as very few people would be running such a device. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1938626 Title: PPS API broken To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1938626/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1939344] [NEW] Bluetooth, when turned off, does not disconnect from connected headphones
Public bug reported: It seems like there is some sort of "disconnect" message that other operating systems (Android, MacOS) send to all connected bluetooth devices when the computer/phone's bluetooth system is turned off, which Ubuntu 20.04.02LTS does not. When I connect my headphones (Aftershokz Aeropex) to my 20.04.02LTS Ubuntu system (running on a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 3rd Gen), and then turn off bluetooth entire from Ubuntu settings, the headphones act as if the connection to its source device (i.e., the computer) has been lost unexpectedly, exactly in the same way they would if I'd walked out of range: they give a periodic "out of range" beep until I power-cycle them. If I specifically go into Ubuntu bluetooth settings and disconnect just the headphones, then the headphones do a quick beep to acknowledge the disconnection, and do not give "out of range" notifications. The expected behavior, which my two main other source devices do (a Macbook, my Android phone), is that when one turns off the bluetooth system, the source device sends that "disconnect" message to the headphones (headphones beep once), and there is no "out of range" beeping afterward. [Bug 1939339] [NEW] Security exception raised by java.util.Properties.store() when using openjdk-16-jdk
Public bug reported: Since JDK 11, the Ubuntu "open jdk" packages have a defect which does not appear in the actual Open JDK distros available from java.net. The problem was discovered by Derby users (see https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-7122) and reported as an Open JDK bug (see https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8272157). This is the problem: When trying to persist a java.util.Properties object, an exception is raised when running under the java SecurityManager. The exception occurs when java.util.Properties.store0() calls java.util.Properties.getFormattedTimestamp() in order to format the timestamp required by the contract of java.util.Properties.store(). The getFormattedTimestamp() method does not appear in Open JDK. There the timestamp is formatted thusly: bw.write("#" + new Date().toString()); The exception stack trace (see the repro below) is: Exception in thread "main" java.security.AccessControlException: access denied ("java.lang.RuntimePermission" "getenv.SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH") at java.base/java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(AccessControlContext.java:472) at java.base/java.security.AccessController.checkPermission(AccessController.java:1036) at java.base/java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPermission(SecurityManager.java:408) at java.base/java.lang.System.getenv(System.java:1016) at java.base/java.util.Properties.getFormattedTimestamp(Properties.java:1599) at java.base/java.util.Properties.store0(Properties.java:926) at java.base/java.util.Properties.store(Properties.java:868) at DERBY_7122.main(DERBY_7122.java:37) At a minimum, could someone explain (with CVE numbers if available) the security risk incurred by probing the value of the Linux environment variable SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH? Here is a sample program which demonstrates this problem. The fact that it works on the Nvidia driver suggests that EDID parsing could be the problem (I'm sure Nvidia does their own EDID parsing). Anyway, I did attempt to play around with the EDID... I'm able to get the EDID into the initramfs and everything else, but I didn't see anything in dmesg to show it's using my EDID. I tried to hack my EDID, but I could only find one mode... The 60 Hz mode, but this is likely related to the parsing issues I mentioned above. If I grab the EDID when running with the dGPU, it doesn't give me errors and has a 165 Hz mode. That's the EDID I tried to load. I did file a kernel bug: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=214011 ** Bug watch added: Linux Kernel Bug Tracker #214011 https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=214011 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1848746 Title: Refresh rate change requests to 40Hz are "adjusted" back to 60Hz To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1848746/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1939331] [NEW] Firefox freezing system by occupying all RAM
Public bug reported: For several days, some weeks maybe, I'm suffering from the problem that every now and then (several times a day) firefox runs into a state where it occupies all available RAM. Sometimes it is still possible with patience, because mouse and keyboard become slow and other programs can't run, to kill firefox or start QPS with CTRL-ALT-DEL. In almost all cases QPS shows that there are four of the many firefox processes having occupied more than 4GB RAM each. Since my PC has 16GB RAM, all is occupied. In most cases it is not possible to kill firefox anymore (because I can't get even an existing shell window to become active or start QPS) and not even properly shut down the PC with a short press on the power button. It is never a single firefox task running berserk, it's always four or more. Maybe some memory leak. Maybe this is not caused by a new bug, but possibly by new ADS on web pages. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be possible to limit the memory space to be occupied by firefox, since limits apply to single processes, and firefox opens a process per browser window or tab. However, we should have some method to limit the mem space firefox can occupy. [Bug 1938096] Re: [Lenovo X1 Carbon 9th] [SYNA8009:00 06CB:CE57] touchpad lagging after resume from suspend
> Can you please run `watch -n0 cat /proc/interrupts` and check whether "i2c_designware" or "SYNA8009:00" number is increasing without touching the touchpad? Tried this now, and yes, both of these ("idma64.0, i2c_designware.0" and "SYNA8009:00") are increasing while not using the touchpad at all after resuming from suspend. Right after a reboot these values remain stable and do not increase while not using it. > We have an internal bug tracking this and were working with the touchpad > vendor but strong recommendation is to use Modern Standby/S0ix suspend > support. > > Are you sure you're seeing worse battery time with S0ix? Recommendation from > Intel is that it is the same as or better than S3 and on these Tigerlake > CPU's is what Intel are recommending for use. Awesome! I only gave the modern standby/sleep a couple of chances in the beginning, and at that point the laptop battery was drained by the next morning if I closed the lid on it after work (around 5-6 pm the evening before). Bear in mind that that was with the stock kernel that came with Pop 21.04, which is 5.11.0. I can give it a try again now that I am running 5.13.9, if a lot has changed regarding that since then. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1938096 Title: [Lenovo X1 Carbon 9th] [SYNA8009:00 06CB:CE57] touchpad lagging after resume from suspend To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libinput/+bug/1938096/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
