[Bug 1933167] Re: [MIR] oem-sutton.simon-carrie-meta

2021-08-09 Thread Shih-Yuan Lee
** Description changed:

  [Background]

  Please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MIRTeam/Exceptions/OEM and
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/OEMMeta for details.

  [Impact]

- 1. Upgrade path: Users will be upgrading from a package in the associated
OEM archive, not the Ubuntu archive.
- 2. The background and impact of the situation for this change, and it's
impact.
+  1. Upgrade path: Users will be upgrading from a package in the associated
OEM archive, not the Ubuntu archive.
+  2. The background and impact of the situation for this change, and it's
impact.

  [Testing]

-  1. Test that `ubuntu-drivers list-oem` lists the meta-package on the
relevant hardware
- 2. Test that fully installing the meta-package (upgrading to the OEM archive
if relevant) works properly on the hardware
- 3. Do an offline install. Boot the system. Run update-manager. Check that an
upgrade to the OEM package is offered and that it completes successfully and
the hardware works properly.

+  3. Do an offline install. Boot the system. Run update-manager. Check that an
upgrade to the OEM package is offered and that it completes successfully and
the hardware works properly.

  [Regression Potential]

  Most potential regressions will live in the package set that will be
  installed via dependency of this package, which live in OEM archive
  (outside of Ubuntu) and control by OEM team. OEM team and other
  corresponding team need take responsibility of those dependency
  installed.

  [When switching kernel flavour] Check that the new kernel flavour works
  on the target platform.

  [Availability]
  This is a meta package for https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MIRTeam/Exceptions/OEM
that means the package doesn't exist in Debian or Ubuntu archive yet.
  The source code of the oem-sutton.simon-carrie-meta for focal:
- git clone -b simon.carrie-focal-ubuntu
https://git.launchpad.net/~oem-solutions-engineers/pc-enablement/+git/oem-sutton-projects-meta
+ git clone -b simon.carrie-focal-ubuntu
https://git.launchpad.net/~oem-solutions-engineers/pc-enablement/+git/oem-sutton-projects-meta

  [Rationale]
  We want to improve the hardware support for some Lenovo platforms.

  [Security]
  No CVE/known security issue.

  [Quality assurance]
  I have used ppa:oem-solutions-engineers/oem-projects-meta to check this
package on some Lenovo platforms.
  oem-sutton.simon-carrie-meta will be upgraded to 20.04ubuntu1 or latest
version from OEM archive.

  [Dependencies]
  It only depends on ubuntu-oem-keyring.

  [Standards compliance]
  This package should have met all requirements of
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MIRTeam/Exceptions/OEM.

  [Maintenance]
  Canonical OEM Enablement Team will take care of the maintenance.

  [Background information]
  Please check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MIRTeam/Exceptions/OEM for details.

  Please use "oem-metapackage-mir-check" in lp:ubuntu-archive-tools to
  verify this MIR against the reference package in the archive.

[Bug 1907887] Re: Old kernel files aren't completely autoremoved

2021-08-09 Thread Mahendra Tallur
Hi ! An important side effect is that, after several months/years,
updates take an increasing amount time due to the presence of many
unused kernels.

Now that some distros (incl. Neon) use offline updates (applied after
rebooting), it gives the feeling the update stopped / crashed.

15+1533136590.3beb971-0ubuntu1 allows the laptop to boot. Cmon guys,

This output effectively indicates you have somehow configured grub to
not know what EFI System Partition to install to.

Please attach the output of 'debconf-show grub-pc'.

[Bug 1939238] Re: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.

2021-08-09 Thread Theodore Ts'o
fsck -y isn't *always* the right answer. The reason why the boot
scripts don't just run fsck -y automatically is that sometimes a human
with judgement can do better by manually running fsck instead of just
blindly answering yes to all questions.For "users who are not
competent" (your words, not mine), yes this may be beyond their
capabilities. But there is a reason why some jobs, like for example,
fixing airplane engines, requires people who are "competent", and
certified to be so.If you have a full set of backups, then sure, you
could try using fsck -y, and if that leads to unacceptable data loss,
it's possible that you could recover more data by selective use of
answering some fsck questions, and using debugfs. The problem is that
"users who are not competent" are also not likely to be doing regular
backups of their data.   :-(

2021-08-09 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it
will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1939347

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

(FYI: Ubuntu LTS releases have two kernel stack choices; you could always
switch from your current HWE stack to the GA stack. See
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709 for support options, or
for details

On install, & post-install this issue did NOT re-occur. I adjusted
displays to match my setup, logout & login etc. and the issue was not
re-created.

My plan (assuming re-created issue) was then to add requested kernel
(comment #6) to see if re-occurs but no point given I've been unable to
re-create issue. (I see no point installing hirsute for testing)

Note: this box has had recent (graphic) issues with Kubuntu & Ubuntu
only, neither of which I'm testing very regularly any-more (box is fine
with Lubuntu where I test most; I don't recall issues with Xubuntu
either but I'm rarely testing there either)

It's now the morning later & the issue is still not evident on booting the
system.  Flipping issue to incomplete.
Thanks @Kai-Heng Feng

[Bug 1939347] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 freeze since kernel 5.11

2021-08-09 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1939347/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Booting back into the 5.8 kernel allows my dock display to work again.

It looks like this might be the same issue:

2021-08-09 Thread sheepscrossing
Please advise the name of the packages I need to purge. I've tried a lot
of different things but haven't found the right name.

Also I have booted 5.11.0-25 and the system locked up when I lifted the
lid to resume, I hard to do a hard boot as even Alt/Sysreq REISUB won't
work. I guess I'll try Mr. Feng's kernel next.

[Bug 1939353] Re: FTBFS 3.5.6-1build1 with gcc-11

2021-08-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
Seen by redhat and fixed in postfix-3.5.9-11.el9:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1984045.

"closefrom is a new function in glibc 2.34. It follows the Solaris
precedent, so it returns void (not int). At the minimum, Postfix needs
to adjust its return type. The only caller of the function does not use
the returned value anyway."

Fedora's patch attached, I've not tested it yet.

[Bug 1939306] Re: latest shim-signed fails on Lenovo T480 with Secure boot

2021-08-09 Thread Hannes Erven
Experienced the same issue on a Thinkpad X1 Gen7, it stops at a blank
screen. While experimenting even disabling SecureBoot was not a reliable
workaround. With "mokutil --set-verbosity true", the stack ends at the
same line as demonstrated by the OP in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/shim-
signed/+bug/1939306/+attachment/5516850/+files/20210809_132455.jpg .

Problem appeared after upgrade vom shim-signed:amd64 1.47+15.4-0ubuntu2
to 1.50+15.4-0ubuntu7 and was solved by downgrading to
1.46+15.4-0ubuntu1 (the 1.47 version is currently not available,
Launchpad lists only 1.50 and 1.46).

[Bug 1938626] Re: PPS API broken

2021-08-09 Thread Jim Pennino
A possible cause for this bug has occurred to me, but I wouldn't know
where in the kernel code to check for this.

Note: When I talk about a control line, I am using the DTE, i.e
computer, end connector reference.

In years past there was no standardization for which line on a serial
port carried the PPS signal for a GPS and it was a mix of DCD, RTS, and
occasionally CTS. Current commercial devices, such as the one I have,
seem to mostly use CTS.

Is is possible the current kernel code is not looking at ALL those lines
for PPS?

This would also explain why you have not gotten lots of bug reports as
very few people would be running such a device.

[Bug 1939346] Re: FTBFS 3.5.6-1build1 in build-docs

2021-08-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
It sounds like the warning for the Libre+Franklin import is ignored by the
testsuite.
But in any case, it is mentioned at
https://github.com/sqlalchemy/sqlalchemy/issues/5727, and sounds like the issue
is that an external resource is attempting to be read but blocked by the proxy.

[Bug 1939349] [NEW] frequent hangs with latest hirsute kernel (nvidia graphics)

2021-08-09 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to the latest kernel, I am experiencing frequent kernel
hangs. The system does not respond to Alt+SysRq, and I have to power it
off.

In some cases the hang happens before X has even been launched at boot.

When it hangs, the fan spins up to full speed.

[Bug 1939348] [NEW] 3d models glitch in 3D view

2021-08-09 Thread thejpster
Public bug reported:

OS: Ubuntu 21.04
Package: Kicad 5.1.9+dsfg1-1
CPU: 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz (with Intel Xe graphics)
Screen resolution: 2560x1600 @ 60 Hz
Display: X11, with default GNOME 3 (Wayland has the same issue)

When I view my PCB design in Kicad in 3D mode, various surfaces on the
3D models glitch on and off (appear transparent and then solid again).
Adjusting the view very slightly might cause them to reappear, or they
might change when panning, but then change back when panning stops. This
exact board works fine on my other PCs (an aging Core 2 Duo with a
Quadro 600, and an i3-7100U with Intel UHD graphics - both running the
same Ubuntu and Kicad).

Kicad project you can try: https://github.com/Neotron-Compute/Neotron-
Pico/commit/2a30b714678ae7cdd571d254cc3df3dd42722fe9

Screen-cap of issue: https://youtu.be/4aX5BPtca-E

I'm filing against Kicad, but this may well be a Mesa bug.

[Bug 1939347] [NEW] Ubuntu 20.04 freeze since kernel 5.11

2021-08-09 Thread Philippe Lawrence
Public bug reported:

Since the last kernel update 5.11.0-25-generic, the system freezes in a few
seconds or minutes, sometimes even on the login screen.
The machine is a recent dell latitude 7490. The graphics card is Intel
Corporation UHD Graphics 620 (rev 07). No multiboot. No problem with the
previous kernel 5.8.0-63.
I had the same problem with fedora a few months ago, which forced me to switch

[Bug 1939344] [NEW] Bluetooth, when turned off, does not disconnect from connected headphones

2021-08-09 Thread Joe-xenotropic
Public bug reported:

It seems like there is some sort of "disconnect" message that other
operating systems (Android, MacOS) send to all connected bluetooth
devices when the computer/phone's bluetooth system is turned off, which
Ubuntu 20.04.02LTS does not.

When I connect my headphones (Aftershokz Aeropex) to my 20.04.02LTS
Ubuntu system (running on a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 3rd Gen), and then turn
off bluetooth entire from Ubuntu settings, the headphones act as if the
connection to its source device (i.e., the computer) has been lost
unexpectedly, exactly in the same way they would if I'd walked out of
range: they give a periodic "out of range" beep until I power-cycle
them.

If I specifically go into Ubuntu bluetooth settings and disconnect just
the headphones, then the headphones do a quick beep to acknowledge the
disconnection, and do not give "out of range" notifications.

The expected behavior, which my two main other source devices do (a
Macbook, my Android phone), is that when one turns off the bluetooth
system, the source device sends that "disconnect" message to the
headphones (headphones beep once), and there is no "out of range"
beeping afterward.

[Bug 1938953] Re: virtualbox-dkms 6.1.16-dfsg-6~ubuntu1.20.04.2: virtualbox kernel module failed to build

2021-08-09 Thread meelmaar
Did not use Virtual Box in the 2 months before or after the upgrade.
Probably not related, but mention it as @Michaelainsworth also mentioned it: Do
have some issue with my laptop turning off at unexpected moments (i.e. not
battery related), which I believe has to do with a larger hybrid HDD that I
installed some months ago. The cooling seems insufficient and the computer gets
very hot near the drive.

[Bug 1939173] Re: [HP 120-1100eo API] Screen flickering white vertical lines

2021-08-09 Thread Juuso Korhonen
Hi!

I'm sorry I was unclear. I meant that I was on just "Ubuntu" and then
switched to "Ubuntu on Wayland". Sadly this didn't help, so I created
the bug report.

Today I tried installing Ubuntu in Legacy mode. This didn't help. Again,
the graphic safe installer works normally but not the normal installer.

How shall we continue debugging?

Best regards and thank you for your responses!

[Bug 1939339] [NEW] Security exception raised by java.util.Properties.store() when using openjdk-16-jdk

2021-08-09 Thread Rick Hillegas
Public bug reported:

Since JDK 11, the Ubuntu "open jdk" packages have a defect which does
not appear in the actual Open JDK distros available from java.net. The
problem was discovered by Derby users (see
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-7122) and reported as an
Open JDK bug (see https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8272157).

This is the problem: When trying to persist a java.util.Properties
object, an exception is raised when running under the java
SecurityManager. The exception occurs when java.util.Properties.store0()
calls java.util.Properties.getFormattedTimestamp() in order to format
the timestamp required by the contract of java.util.Properties.store().
The getFormattedTimestamp() method does not appear in Open JDK. There
the timestamp is formatted thusly:

bw.write("#" + new Date().toString());

The exception stack trace (see the repro below) is:

Exception in thread "main" java.security.AccessControlException: access denied
("java.lang.RuntimePermission" "getenv.SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH")
at
java.base/java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(AccessControlContext.java:472)
at
java.base/java.security.AccessController.checkPermission(AccessController.java:1036)
at
java.base/java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPermission(SecurityManager.java:408)
at java.base/java.lang.System.getenv(System.java:1016)
at
java.base/java.util.Properties.getFormattedTimestamp(Properties.java:1599)
at java.base/java.util.Properties.store0(Properties.java:926)
at java.base/java.util.Properties.store(Properties.java:868)
at DERBY_7122.main(DERBY_7122.java:37)

At a minimum, could someone explain (with CVE numbers if available) the
security risk incurred by probing the value of the Linux environment
variable SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH?

Here is a sample program which demonstrates this problem. This program
runs fine on Open JDK distros from java.net.

import java.io.PrintWriter;
import java.util.Properties;

/**
 * Demonstrate that Properties.store() fails under a security manager on Ubuntu.
 */
public class DERBY_7122
{
private static final String PROPERTY_FILE_NAME =
"/tmp/derby-7122.properties";
private static final String SECURITY_POLICY_FILE_NAME =
"/tmp/derby-7122.policy";
private static final String SECURITY_POLICY_FILE_URL = "file:" +
SECURITY_POLICY_FILE_NAME;

private final static String POLICY_FILE_PROPERTY =
"java.security.policy";

private static final String SECURITY_FILE_CONTENTS =
"grant\n" +
"{\n" +
"  permission java.io.FilePermission \"/tmp/-\",
\"read,write,delete\";\n" +
"};\n"
;

public static void main(String... args) throws Exception
{
// write the policy file
try (PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(SECURITY_POLICY_FILE_NAME))
{ pw.write(SECURITY_FILE_CONTENTS); }

// start up a security manager using the policy file we just wrote
System.setProperty( POLICY_FILE_PROPERTY, SECURITY_POLICY_FILE_URL );
System.setSecurityManager( new SecurityManager() );

// create a small Properties object
Properties props = new Properties();
props.setProperty("foo", "bar");

// write the properties to disk.
props.store(new PrintWriter(PROPERTY_FILE_NAME), "this fails on ubuntu
with JVMs at level 11 and higher");
}

}

A customer provided us the feedback from Hirsute's testing. Formally,

I'm able to access the drive's registers without issues."

I'm moving on with the verification tagging. Thanks!

[Bug 1848746] Re: Refresh rate change requests to 40Hz are "adjusted" back to 60Hz

2021-08-09 Thread Cameron Berkenpas
My EDID doesn't seem to parse correctly... Which is probably at least
part of the problem. The fact that it works on the Nvidia driver
suggests that EDID parsing could be the problem (I'm sure Nvidia does
their own EDID parsing).

Anyway, I did attempt to play around with the EDID... I'm able to get
the EDID into the initramfs and everything else, but I didn't see
anything in dmesg to show it's using my EDID.

I tried to hack my EDID, but I could only find one mode... The 60 Hz
mode, but this is likely related to the parsing issues I mentioned
above.

If I grab the EDID when running with the dGPU, it doesn't give me errors
and has a 165 Hz mode. That's the EDID I tried to load.

I did file a kernel bug:

officially released to Ubuntu 20.04 updates. So you can delete the test
kernel packages with:

  sudo dpkg -P PACKAGENAME1 PACKAGENAME2

and then do a system update to get the official update to 5.11:

steps:
cloned the repo: https://github.com/thesofproject/linux.git

and run following commands

```
sudo apt install build-essential libssl-dev ccache bison flex libelf-dev dwarves
sudo apt-get build-dep linux-image-`uname -r` #(the running kernel)
[Bug 1939331] [NEW] Firefox freezing system by occupying all RAM
2021-08-09 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Public bug reported:
For several days, some weeks maybe, I'm suffering from the problem that
every now and then (several times a day) firefox runs into a state where
it occupies all available RAM.
Sometimes it is still possible with patience, because mouse and keyboard
become slow and other programs can't run, to kill firefox or start QPS
with CTRL-ALT-DEL.
In almost all cases QPS shows that there are four of the many firefox
processes having occupied more than 4GB RAM each. Since my PC has 16GB
RAM, all is occupied.
In most cases it is not possible to kill firefox anymore (because I
can't get even an existing shell window to become active or start QPS)
and not even properly shut down the PC with a short press on the power
button.
It is never a single firefox task running berserk, it's always four or
more. Maybe some memory leak.
Maybe this is not caused by a new bug, but possibly by new ADS on web
pages.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be possible to limit the memory space
to be occupied by firefox, since limits apply to single processes, and
firefox opens a process per browser window or tab.
However, we should have some method to limit the mem space firefox can
occupy.
[Bug 1938096] Re: [Lenovo X1 Carbon 9th] [SYNA8009:00 06CB:CE57] touchpad lagging after resume from suspend
2021-08-09 Thread Alexander Karlstad
> Can you please run `watch -n0 cat /proc/interrupts` and check whether
"i2c_designware" or "SYNA8009:00" number is increasing without touching
the touchpad?
Tried this now, and yes, both of these ("idma64.0, i2c_designware.0" and
"SYNA8009:00") are increasing while not using the touchpad at all after
resuming from suspend. Right after a reboot these values remain stable
and do not increase while not using it.
Awesome!
I only gave the modern standby/sleep a couple of chances in the
beginning, and at that point the laptop battery was drained by the next
morning if I closed the lid on it after work (around 5-6 pm the evening
before). Bear in mind that that was with the stock kernel that came with
Pop 21.04, which is 5.11.0. I can give it a try again now that I am
running 5.13.9, if a lot has changed regarding that since then.
