[Bug 1930188] Re: Acer Aspire 5 sound driver issues

2021-09-12 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

+ SRU Justification for pulseaudio:
+
+ [Impact]
+ On the machines with the sof audio driver, after booting up, the
+ active output device is speaker by default, we adjust the output
+ volume to 100%, then we plug a headphone, and adjust the output
+ volume from 100% to 20%, now in theory, the speaker's volume is
+ 100%, the headphone's volume is 20%. We plugout the headphone,
+ the active output device becomes speaker and we expect the volume
+ changes to 100%, but the output volume for speaker is 20%.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Backport a upstream patch, this patch is already in the pulseaudio-15.0,
+ so impish already has this fix. Only hirsute and focal need to backport
+ this patch.
+
+ [Test]
+ adjust speaker's volume to 80%, then plug headphone and adjust headphone's
+ volume to 20%, unplug the headphone, the speaker's volume becomes to 80%,
+ plug the headphone, the headphone's volume becomes to 20%.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+ The patch writes the output volume to hardware immediately when switching
+ output device on the machines with sof audio driver, this could introduce
+ pop noise when changing the output device, but this possibility is very
+ low, I tested the patch on many lenovo and dell machines with sof audio
driver,
+ all worked as expected and have no pop noise when switching output device.
+
+
+
+
  The patch was merged to ubuntu 5.13.0 and 5.11.0 generic kernels
  with stable update already, but it is not merged to ubuntu 5.4.0
  kernel yet, so I sent this SRU for the focal kernel.

  [Impact]
  Users plug headphone and Mic to the audio jacks, but the system
  can't detect them, and couldn't output sound through headphone and
  record sound through Mic.

  [Fix]
  Backport a upstream patch, this will set the Mic to auto-detection
  mode and set the headphone to left location.

-
  [Test]
  Plug a headset to the headset audio jack, both headphone and mic
  could be detected. And output the sound to headphone, could hear
  the sound, record the sound through Mic, the sound could be recorded.

-
  [Where problems could occur]
  The patch is specific to Acer Aspire 5 machine, if it could introduce
  regression, it will make the audio like internal mic and internal spk
  stop working. But this possibility is very low.
-

  Hello,

  There seems to be lots of issues in sound driver for Acer Aspire
  A515-56-57XR with ALC255. I will list all of them below and what I have
  tried so far.

  1. Headphones appears always plugged in even if they are physically not
  2. When actually plugging in headset/earphones it does not auto switch from
speakers/internal mic to headphones/headset microphone automatically and vice
versa, have to manually switch everytime.
  3. External headset/earphones microphone won't work at all

  After, logs of trial and error I have found a temporary fix. This seems
  to use legacy intel drivers which solves all 3 issues mentioned above
  but the internal/dmic mic is completely gone (which seems intentional
  when using this). Both depreciated dmic_detect and dsp_driver works, I
  have been using dsp_driver for now as I need external microphone at any
  cost.

  End of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
  # Headset mic fix
  options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0 / options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1
  options snd-hda-intel model=alc255-acer

  In another thread similar to this I got some support and at least fixed
  the external microphone without using the alsa-base.conf change in
  custom modified kernel. I will attach it here. Now, hoping to fix other
  issues as well slowly like making headphones unplugged when physically
  removing as well as auto switching like the legacy driver one.

[Bug 1943392] Re: irq/174-AudioDS causing high cpu load since 20.04.02

2021-09-12 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1943392/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1941044] Re: ax210 wifi adapter disappears with upgrade to linux-firmware 1.187.16

2021-09-12 Thread Logan Symons
Temporary workaround:

```
# This is an official source, despite the less common url
wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/543359934/linux-firmware_1.187.15_all.deb
# Remove linux-firmware 1.187.16
sudo apt purge linux-firmware
# Install linux-firmware .deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware_1.187.15_all.deb
# Hold linux-firmware package to stop updates replacing 1.187.15
sudo apt-mark hold linux-firmware
# Verify installed version
apt policy linux-firmware
```

Once a fixed version of linux-firmware is out the following will need to
be run:

```
sudo apt-mark unhold linux-firmware
```

[Bug 1943049] Re: Docker ubuntu:impish: Problem executing scripts DPkg::Post-Invoke 'rm -f /var/cache/apt/archives/*.deb /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/*.deb /var/cache/apt/*.bin || true'

2021-09-12 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
So to hit this problem you need docker to include a syscall which:

 a) has a number higher than clone3 in its seccomp profile
 b) is known by libseccomp (as runc uses libseccomp to translate syscall names
into numbers)

I think the syscall that we are hitting here is faccessat2, which was
added to the default seccomp profile in 20.10 (in
https://github.com/moby/moby/pull/41353) and is understood by libseccomp
2.5.0+, both of which have been backported to all stable releases. There
are other syscalls in the default docker profile that could cause
problems but they are not understood by any released version of
libseccomp afaict.

I think the current version of https://github.com/moby/moby/pull/42836
should fix this (unfortunately I think Tianon found this version just a
couple of hours after you were testing things). We don't need to
backport runc or containerd to fix docker, but I don't know about, say,
k8s. containerd probably needs a patch to _its_ default policy but I
don't know who uses that.

I think the reason that podman works in fedora is because fedora has a
newer version of the github.com/containers/common, newer even than the
one vendored into podman's git tree (yay?) -- it looks like v0.40.0
added support for the clone3 syscall. That seems to be in sid, so we
could sync that over to fix podman on impish (after a rebuild of
course), not sure what we should do for hirsute users.

So, what to do now and what to do in the future.

For now, at the moment I feel reasonably confident that we can patch
docker in supported releases before impish release, and hopefully there
can be an upstream 20.10.9 release with the fix also before impish
release. Then we can just tell docker users to update when they hit this
and not feel to guilty.

But what about other container runtimes? Don't know. As above, at least
some versions of podman have problems.

My feeling currently is to not patch out the use of clone3 in libc. But
I am prepared to be persuaded otherwise.

For the future, I'm not sure there's much that can be done other than to
really pay attention to seccomp policy changes. Maybe it's possible to
write a tool to print out the syscalls that are getting implicitly
getting EPERM (probably using the amazingly useful
https://github.com/hrw/syscalls-table/tree/master/tables) for a given
runc seccomp policy and have a github action print out any changes to
this set...

The dependence on libseccomp versions adds a wrinkle. Unless I'm
misunderstanding things quite badly, the runc default policy contains a
bunch of syscalls that are not understood by the current release of
libseccomp but are in its git, so the next libseccomp release will
"activate" these syscalls and possibly flip some others from ENOSYS to
EPERM.

Thanks for the bug report.

When the mouse freezes, does the touchpad still work?

Also, please test a different USB port and a different mouse. We find in
almost every case with bug reports like this it is the peripheral that's
faulty rather than the software.

[Bug 1943386] [NEW] Installer crashed while attempting btrfs on top of LUKS for root FS.

2021-09-12 Thread Jordan
Public bug reported:

What I did:

Configured ubiquity with a root FS that was btrfs on top of LUKS on a
GPT partition.

A /boot/ FS that was btrfs on top of a regular GPT partition.

A /boot/efi/ that was fat32 on top of a regular GPT partition.

What I expected to happen:

Ubuntu would install fine.

What happened instead:

An error message that ubiquity had crashed and this bug report.

Similar report here on 5.10.0-rc4:

I ended up masking the services introduced with 20.04 LTS, and switched back
the crontab.

systemctl mask mdcheck_continue.service mdcheck_continue.timer
mdcheck_start.service mdcheck_start.timer
cat > /etc/cron.d/mdadm << 'EOF'

# By default, run at 00:57 on every Sunday, but do nothing unless the day of
# the month is less than or equal to 7. Thus, only run on the first Sunday of
# each month. crontab(5) sucks, unfortunately, in this regard; therefore this
# hack (see #380425).
57 0 * * 0 root if [ -x /usr/share/mdadm/checkarray ] && [ $(date +\%d) -le 7

The pausing and resuming of the integrity check was an annoyance for me
anyways.

Maybe email once per new release of Ubuntu (including point
releases). Create a flag on disk when notifed for said release.

If we wanted to, create the flag on /run, so that a reboot resets it
all.

Unfortunately, this is made worse with the shift to replacing services
with juju deployments where environments contain multiple units each
trying to email about a new release.

Thanks!

[Bug 1943381] [NEW] what a nightmare (dual boot install Ubuntu) grub is messing up everything

2021-09-12 Thread Niels Magendans
Public bug reported:

This started with me thinking I had created a surplus partition years
ago already when trying to set dual boot up Ubuntu + Windows 10. I got
it working, but I had my eye on this 530mb partition that I thought
wasn't supposed to be there.

But it stayed.

Now only recently, I ran out of room on my Windows 10. But I had a huge
amount of unused space on Ubuntu allocated storage. So... This was
already a hassle. It was annoying AF, but... for a very brief... minute
or so, it seemed like I had pulled it off. The threat I was dealing with
was having to move space in front of the Ubuntu directory. In order to
put it next to the Windows partition, for Windows to be able to add that
space to it's total storage.

I did one dumb move though (yeah bear with me I'm going to explain the
whole thing because that's how fed up I am with this, maybe 2 minutes
more reading time for you but a freakin days worth of work for me).
After I had gotten away somehow with moving Ubuntu a place (it could
still find it when selecting it in grub at startup and booted fine), I
decided... after a little... search.. that this 530mb partition could
go. So I deleted it.

Then. Windows couldn't boot anymore. But Ubuntu still could. Now... I
approached this in the most simple way I could IMO, which was... recover
the lost partition fully.. so hopefully it could do it's mystery job of
booting up Windows 10. Using "testdisk". And then... I found the
partition. Made a call to "write". And then everything got wiped, and
the whole situation got mirrored (funnily enough). Now the 530mb
partition was the only one I had left. And everything on there... the
working Ubuntu partition, the still fully available Windows 10 partition
that just couldn't boot anymore. All gone.

Now, I could try and recover that data again. But I took my loss. And
the problem I think right now??? When I succeeded to install the dual
boot Windows Ubuntu years ago, if something was wrong, I could delete
the partition of Ubuntu and I could just reinstall it. While apparently
right now, that can cause (huge, IMO) problems. Because I started with
using an Ubuntu live-usb. And deleted that remaining now completely
useless 530mb partition I had as well. Then I tried doing it in a
different order, installing Ubuntu and thén Windows 10. But (don't
remember exactly anymore) I soon found out that was the wrong way to go.
I eventually got windows running. Thén I tried installing Ubuntu next to
it. And it was failing again! Because all the screens were... loading...
from top to bottom or bottom to top (as if a scanner line moves up or
down the screen to go to the next screens to display), and it was really
laggy etc. And I think, this is where it went wrong... because I had
still been used to being able to just remove partitions and install them
back again... I wanted to with this failed install of Ubuntu again. But
apparently... there was another... 500mb partition, between the Windows
and Ubuntu partition AND one of around 530 at the end after the Ubuntu
partition. So.. I wanted to remove the Ubuntu partition. But I wanted to
include it with Windows 10 again (somehow... because it had worked
previously to then select the partition size in the Ubuntu installation
"next-to-Windows" again). So I decided to remove that 500mb partition
between Ubuntu and Windows as well. And anyway... I ended up with
problems booting up just Windows already basically. Without even being
able to retry Ubuntu install successfully again. I couldn't even get
into Windows again. (we're almost there) In the end figured out the only
thing that grub rescue responded to was ctrl-alt-delete, which would
reboot it again giving me back the brief option of selecting a boot
device again without having to use a forced shutdown (yet) from grub
rescue. Made a Windows image usb stick. Selected that as boot. And
finally found that I could pick "repair windows", and then go for the
option of command line. And then type "Bootrec.exe /FixMbr". And then I
got rid of this grub rescue trap, and was able to boot into my already
installed Windows again. I took a break! But in the end I thought..
okay... maybe I still got a shot at this. Tried again, and now..?? It
didn't recognize the Windows OS clearly on my 1TB SSD. It took up all
the space, so it should have been able to detect it. Tried repairing C
disk when I was able again, because it can happen if Windows had trouble
shutting down or something. Did a tip with "chkdsk C: /F" to fix any
problems booting Windows. And then it "should have been able to detect
Windows", and it was still not able to. Then, I thought I was very
close, and thought okay well I just need to make a partition for Ubuntu
on my own and select that one to install Ubuntu to manually. And
then..?? I couldn't as easily. I still got trouble. Apparently need to
specify all kinds of shit for that to be able to work again (but still
not getting there... obviously, from my trouble reporting this

[Bug 1940141] Re: OpenSSL servers can send a non-empty status_request in a CertificateRequest

2021-09-12 Thread Nicolas Bock
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

  openssl does not conform to RFC8446, Sec. 4.4.2.1., by sending a
  CertificateRequest message to the client with a non-empty
  status_request extension.

  This issue was fixed in openssl-1.1.1d and is included in Focal
  onward.

  Upstream issue is tracked at https://github.com/openssl/openssl/issues/9767
  Upstream patch review at https://github.com/openssl/openssl/pull/9780
+
+ The issue leads to various client failures with TLS 1.3 as described in,
+ e.g.
+
+ https://github.com/golang/go/issues/35722
+ https://github.com/golang/go/issues/34040

  [Test Plan]

  The issue can be reproduced by building with `enable-ssl-trace`
  and then running `s_server` like this:

  ```
  openssl s_server -key key.pem -cert cert.pem -status_file
test/recipes/ocsp-response.der -Verify 5
  ```

  And running `s_client` like this:

  ```
  openssl s_client -status -trace -cert cert.pem -key key.pem
  ```

  The output shows a `status_request` extension in the
  `CertificateRequest` as follows:

  If the `status_request` extension is present in a
  `CertificateRequest` then it must be empty according to RFC8446,
  Sec. 4.4.2.1.

  [Where problems could occur]

  The patch disables the `status_request` extension inside a
  `CertificateRequest`. Applications expecting the incorrect,
  non-empty reply for the `status_request` extension will break
  with this patch.

[Bug 1943379] [NEW] CD tray ejected on hibernate resume

2021-09-12 Thread benk
Public bug reported:

Over the past few days I seem to have become subject to this kernel bug:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213759

I'm running Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS which is using kernel 5.11.0-34-generic.
It looks like this issue was fixed in 5.14, so could we get a kernel
update or a backport of the patch? See the mainline kernel fix
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/5c04243a56a7977185b00400e59ca7e108004faf.

Thanks!

[Bug 1943285] Re: login screen lagging.

2021-09-12 Thread Marco
I have a similar issue on Ubuntu 20.04 with 1.30.0-0ubuntu4~20.04.1.
Sometimes I enter my password, the screen goes black and I have to log
in another time. Once lightdm didn't start at all.

If such issues occur I have these entries in the journal:

[Bug 1943376] [NEW] [FFe] KDE Frameworks 5.86.0 into Impish archive

2021-09-12 Thread Rik Mills
Public bug reported:

This bug report is a Feature Freeze Exception request on behalf of the
Kubuntu team for KDE Frameworks 5.86.0 (updated from 5.85.0).

Announcement and changelog:
https://kde.org/announcements/frameworks/5/5.86.0/

As is usual with a KDE Frameworks release, this is a mixture of new some
new features and incremental important bugfixes.

Please note that the new KDE Frameworks features are not going to be
effective yet, since we are not updating to major versions of KDE's
Plasma or KDE's Applications. So this is, in practice, like a bugfix
release.

We currently have this staged in https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-
service/+archive/ubuntu/4669/+packages if you wish to inspect the
packages.

We also have testers that have been running a system with this staged
update and have reported no problems.

Final note: please note that this time, in addition to the KDE
Frameworks packages, we also need to update plasma-wayland-protocols
from 1.3.0 to 1.4.0, otherwise kwayland would fail to build.

The following packages form the KDE Frameworks set:

verification-failed-hirsute. In either case, without details of your
testing we will not be able to proceed.
