[Bug 1950912]

2021-12-08 Thread Wls220spring
(In reply to Gordon Lack from comment #11)
> Indeed, I've just downloaded 91.3.2 from thunderbird.net, dropped it in place
> as `/usr/lib/thunderbird` and copied across Ubuntu's `thunderbird.sh`
> start-up script.
>
> The problems with drop-down menus are *still present*.
> So 91.3.2 *does* **NOT** fix the issue.

Nobody said it was fixed. Bug 1741095 is about something entirely unrelated.
This bug won't be fixed until assigned to someone, a patch is applied, a new
version is built, and the report is resolved as fixed.

[Bug 1953719] [NEW] logrotate.service fails because it starts before winbind.service

2021-12-08 Thread R. Diez
Public bug reported:

I have started to play with Prometheus on my Ubuntu 20.04.3. You can
configure Prometheus to alert you when a systemd service fails, and in
this way I noticed a problem with the logrotate.service immediately
after booting the system.

I looked with Cockpit, and Cockpit was reporting logrotate.service as
"Failed to start". This is the log for logrotate.service :

8<8<8<
Dez 09 08:00:56 rdiez3 systemd[1]: Starting Rotate log files...
Dez 09 08:00:58 rdiez3 logrotate[1760]: Can't find pid for destination
'winbindd'
Dez 09 08:00:58 rdiez3 logrotate[1069]: error: error running non-shared
postrotate script for /var/log/samba/log.winbindd of
'/var/log/samba/log.winbindd '
Dez 09 08:00:58 rdiez3 systemd[1]: logrotate.service: Main process exited,
code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
Dez 09 08:00:58 rdiez3 systemd[1]: logrotate.service: Failed with result
'exit-code'.
Dez 09 08:00:58 rdiez3 systemd[1]: Failed to start Rotate log files.
8<8<8<

I then looked at winbind.service , which was fine:

8<8<8<
Dez 09 08:01:01 rdiez3 systemd[1]: Starting Samba Winbind Daemon...
Dez 09 08:01:01 rdiez3 systemd[1]: Started Samba Winbind Daemon.
8<8<8<

But I noticed that winbind.service started after logrotate.service . I
wonder whether this is a service dependency issue.

I am using this PC only during normal working hours, and logrotate.timer
is set to run at midnight, when the computer will never be turned on.

The worry is that this problem could effectively cause the complete log
rotation to stop working.

[Bug 1952766] Re: Disconnecting monitor crashes shell (wayland, gnome)

2021-12-08 Thread bluppfisk
I'm sure the discussion has been held elsewhere, and there's been made a
case against sandboxing them or handling their crashes, as lack of
freedom would defeat the very purpose of these extensions?

At any rate I'm happy to have reached a solution. 3 monitor unplugs
without crashes convinces me that that was the problem. Many thanks for
your intervention!

I don't miss the Dock very much but it'd be interesting to see where it
has been patched and when to expect it in a release. Is there any info
on that? On the bug you shared, it only says "fix committed" but I am
too dumb to find out where I can see the code change.

[Bug 1949579] Re: [MIR] postgresql-14

2021-12-08 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
python-sqlalchemy-utils was not shown before, but now is a test fail for
postgresql-common

About the dependency to llvm-11-dev, clang-11.
Two things to know here, first of all that will sooner or later be llvm-13 due
to [1].
But right now there is an issue around s390x that blocks this:
+ERROR: failed to JIT module: Added modules have incompatible data layouts:
E-m:e-i1:8:16-i8:8:16-i64:64-f128:64-a:8:16-n32:64 (module) vs
E-m:e-i1:8:16-i8:8:16-i64:64-f128:64-v128:64-a:8:16-n32:64 (jit)

Both are not important right now, the problem is that the dependency is from
postgresqls -dev package which is not supposed to be in main. Even the older
postgresql-server-dev-13 depends on it, but postgresql-server-dev-13 is and
postgresql-server-dev-14 should not be in main.
That is just an artifact from promoting everything in comment #16.
Nothing changed in seeds or dependencies - these are properly listed in [2].

Binary only movements to universe (ubuntu-server)
postgresql-server-dev-14postgresql-14

I'll ping an AA for the demotion of postgresql-server-dev-14 and will
check why/where the test fail of python-sqlalchemy-utils comes from.

I am using VMWare Fusion Tech Preview on an Apple M1 Max MacBook Pro
  per:

  https://blogs.vmware.com/teamfusion/2021/09/fusion-for-m1-public-tech-
  preview-now-available.html

I am successfully using the 5.14 kernel series (currently
5.14.21-051421-generic) but note this is now EOL.

However whenever I try to upgrade to either the 5.15 or 5.16 series my
VM hangs at boot time after:

  EFI stub: Booting Linux Kernel...
  EFI stub: EFI_RNG_PROTOCOL unavailable
EFI stub: ERROR: FIRMWARE BUG: kernel image not aligned on 64k boundary
EFI stub: ERROR: FIRMWARE BUG: Image BSS overlaps adjacent EFI memory region
EFI stub: Using DIB from configuration table
  EFI stub: Exiting boot services...

I see the same "hang" for both 5.15.7 and 5.16-rc4.

FYI this has also been reported by others who note that the problem
appears to be specific to Ubuntu:

  https://communities.vmware.com/t5/Fusion-for-Apple-Silicon-Tech/Anyone-
  have-any-luck-with-Ubuntu-5-15-kernels/m-p/2880362

  Given that I can't boot using the 5.15.7 and 5.16-rc4 kernels, I can't
  provide the output from:

  cat /proc/version

However I attach the output from lspci.

Please let me know what other information I can provide to help diagnose
  this issue.

[Bug 1953671] Re: 5.15 and 5.16 arm64 kernels fail to boot in VMWare Fusion

2021-12-08 Thread Paul Jolly
@Chris - understood. Per my most recent message, running apport-collect
triggers the following warning:

"It appears you are currently running a mainline kernel. It would be
better to report this bug upstream at http://bugzilla.kernel.org/ so
that the upstream kernel developers are aware of the issue. If you'd
still like to file a bug against the Ubuntu kernel, please boot with an
official Ubuntu kernel and re-file."

Excuse my noob status, but what should I therefore do?

I honestly thought that by running a kernel installed from
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.14.21/ I would be
running an Ubuntu kernel.

Thanks

[Bug 1953712] [NEW] 5.15.2 rebuild against libopenssl3 requires patches and dependency fixes

2021-12-08 Thread Rik Mills
Public bug reported:

5.15.2+dfsg-14ubuntu2

From IRC:

[03:22:54] https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qtbase-
opensource-src/5.15.2+dfsg-14ubuntu2 is defective. It still depends on
libssl1.1 (debian/control:161) and doesn't have the necessary patch for
the function renames applied.

As discussed on IRC, in #ubuntu-release and #ubuntu-qt, debian qt
uploader has patches and changes queued in salsa, so to prevent breakage
of Qt and KDE things 5.15.2+dfsg-14ubuntu2 must not migrate to release
pocket.

[Bug 1945221] Re: CPU frequency stuck at minimum value..again Ubuntu 20.04.3

2021-12-08 Thread Srinivas Pandruvada
As Doug correctly described, there is a active prochot situation on the system,
so processor frequency is limited.
Can you dump:
#grep . /sys/class/powercap/intel-rapl/intel-rapl\:0/*

Also if you are able to boot the system without being stuck at 800MHz, can you
try
#echo 1 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_pstate/no_turbo
and check,
If BIOS has option to disable turbo you can try that.

[Bug 1756840] Re: Buggy, under-maintained, not fit for main anymore; alternatives exist

2021-12-08 Thread Gabriel Staples
Just a quick update on my end. This also addresses @Xavier Gnata's
question here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ecryptfs-
utils/+bug/1756840/comments/3

> Ok but what am I supposed to do on a dual boot machine??

I'm writing this all from memory. I did this a long time ago.

My solution is as follows on a Dual Boot machine.

Assume you have Windows on the machine.

1. Use Windows disk tools to make some space for Linux--ex: 120 GB of a 500 GB
drive.
2. Fully encrypt Windows with Veracrypt. It is awesome and can do full
partition encryption for your Windows partition, even while Windows is running!
This might help:
https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/6169/use-truecrypt-to-secure-your-data/.
2. Install Ubuntu 20.04 with LUKS volume encryption. You have to choose the "do
something else" option when installing, and then you have to *manually* make an
encrypted LUKS container. Inside that, you then install Ubuntu.

Done!

Now, when I boot, I get the Linux grub bootloader thing. If I choose
Windows, I have to unlock the disk via a VeraCrypt unlock screen that
pops up *before* Windows can even begin to boot. If I choose Ubuntu,
it's similar: I have to decrypt the LUKS encryption on the screen that
pops up *before* Ubuntu even begins to boot.

Works great. No more need for ecryptfs anymore in my particular case.

Note that on the Ubuntu option, I also make a big swapfile, as I
describe here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/927854/how-do-i-increase-
the-size-of-swapfile-without-removing-it-in-the-
terminal/1177620#1177620.

This is in place of a swap *partition*. The swapfile has the advantage
of being *within* the LUKS-encrypted volume, so it gets encrypted too.

[Bug 1948764] Re: Fail to pass suspend/resume test

2021-12-08 Thread ethan.hsieh
@Chris @Robie

Not sure whether I didn't explain well. Let me take u-boot as an
example.

There are several u-boot packages. These packages are soc-dependent.
When we modify common codes, we need to take other platforms into account and
make sure there is no regression issue on other platforms.
u-boot[1]:
u-boot-amlogic A boot loader for amlogic systems
u-boot-exynos A boot loader for exynos systems
u-boot-imx A boot loader for imx systems
...
u-boot-tegra A boot loader for NVIDIA Tegra systems

u-boot-xlnx[2]:
u-boot-zynqmp u-boot bootloader for Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC systems

But, u-boot-xlnx is based on a different code base provided by Xilinx.
This package is for Xilinx desktop image (boards: zcu102/104/106 and Kria)

It's a similar situation to the armsoc driver.

xf86-video-armsoc[3]
xserver-xorg-video-armsoc-exynos X.Org X server -- ARM SoC display driver for
Exynos DRM
xserver-xorg-video-armsoc-pl111 X.Org X server -- ARM SoC display driver for
pl111 DRM

xf86-video-armsoc-endlessm[4]
xserver-xorg-video-armsoc-endlessm (this one is for Xilinx boards
zcu102/104/106 and Kria)

xf86-video-armsoc-endlessm is created for the Xilinx desktop images.
It’s based on a different code base with Xilinx patches.
The mali kernel driver in the Xilinx images is provided by Xilinx, not generic
one.
This armsoc xorg driver has better compatibility with this driver.
It seems to me that other platforms should not use this armsoc driver.

The Xilinx desktop images have included the patched Xwrapper.config.
There will be no regression issue when xf86-video-armsoc-endlessm gets updated
to 1.4.1-0ubuntu8~20.04.

[Bug 1952766] Re: Disconnecting monitor crashes shell (wayland, gnome)

Extensions have free reign to do anything, including crash the shell.
They are the causes of lots of our bugs. The alternative would be to
disallow extensions which would be more stable but probably less
popular.

[Bug 1953694] [NEW] wayland clipboard handing locks up in certain corner cases

2021-12-08 Thread Kain
Public bug reported:

There are a number of cases in gtk+-3.0 3.24.30 on wayland where copy
paste from/to various apps fails based on something related to type
handling.

I've run into this on Ubuntu 21.10, with multiple apps under the ubuntu
wayland session.

I have not found a matching bug in the Debian BTS, but there is a
matching upstream bug and merged fix in upstream gtk+-3 from GNOME as of
20211206.

[Bug 1953685] Re: [Regression] Firefox 95 is laggy on GMA X4500 (EGL related?)

2021-12-08 Thread Kevin Keijzer
** Description changed:

I have a couple of ThinkPads with old Intel GMA X4500 graphics. Since
- the update to Firefox 95, it's been verry laggy; especially noticeable
+ the update to Firefox 95, it's been very laggy; especially noticeable
while scrolling, for instance on about:support.

Strangely, the bug is less present when the browser window is smaller. A
maximized window lags very badly, but when resizing the window to under
~75% of the screen, it becomes a lot better.

I have tried completely clean profiles by renaming ~/snap/firefox, but
  this made no difference.

I have a feeling that EGL has something to do with it. When I force the
Firefox snap to run on Xwayland by running `WAYLAND_DISABLE=1 snap run
firefox`, the bug is *not* present.

When I run the Firefox 95 deb (from jammy) on Wayland, by running
`MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 firefox`, the bug is also present. (When I run the
deb without that environment variable, it falls back to Xwayland, which
  works normally.)

However, when I set gfx.x11-egl.force-enabled to true in about:config,
  it also lags.

One may assume that EGL is simply broken on this chipset, but that is
not the case. When I run the Firefox *94* deb (from focal) with
`MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1`, it works fine. Also, when I run `snap revert
firefox` to go back to 94.0.2-2, the bug is not present, even when
  running on Wayland, using EGL.

I have tested the snap both on focal and jammy on the same hardware. The
bug is identical in both cases.

-
- tl;dr: On old Intel graphics Firefox 94 was working well with GLX and EGL,
while EGL seems broken on Firefox 95.
+ tl;dr: On old Intel graphics Firefox 94 was working well with GLX and
+ EGL, while EGL seems broken on Firefox 95.

[Bug 1953685] Re: [Regression] Firefox 95 is laggy on GMA X4500 (EGL related?)

2021-12-08 Thread Kevin Keijzer
I have also tested the tarball releases from
https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/

The problems are identical with those releases. I tested 94.0.2, 95.0,
96.0b2 and 97.0a1.

I ran all of them with `MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1`.

94.0.2 works perfectly fine, and all the other releases show lag while
scrolling, and the GNOME Shell / Mutter process even seems to lock up
when Firefox starts a download, prior to the "Save file" popup window.

When run on Xwayland (without the environment variable), all releases
run fine.

So "something" has changed between 94.0.2 and 95.0, breaking the Wayland
backend at least on gen4 Intel graphics. My only other devices are
Pinebook Pro's, using the Panfrost driver. I don't seem to be able to
reproduce this on there. But those are arm64 builds, so maybe not the
best comparison.

[Bug 1953671] Re: 5.15 and 5.16 arm64 kernels fail to boot in VMWare Fusion

2021-12-08 Thread Chris Guiver
Without full package/release details, this bug is not likely to get much
attention until details have been provided (using apport tools).

Please run the apport-collect using the last kernel that booted; and
just note that it was run with the working kernel, and not the kernel
the bug report was about.

No Ubuntu release uses the 5.14 or later kernels currently; they are
currently still in testing only; and no product details have yet been
provided (being populated when ubuntu-bug or apport-collect are run).

[Bug 1953619] Re: Proxy settings are not applied to the installed system

2021-12-08 Thread Paride Legovini
Thanks! I tried to verify the fix bug edge subiquity looks very broken
to me. I refreshed subiquity from edge on a focal-live-server-amd64
image but it crashes at the storage config screen:

Installer debug log: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/fpvd9JzF5h/

---
ERROR root:39 finish: subiquity/Filesystem/_probe/probe_once: FAIL: [Errno 2]
No such file or directory: 'os-prober'
---

os-prober is indeed missing.

I tried the same on Jammy. It doesn't crash, but subiquity gets stuck at the
"Installing system" screen, printing no output (see screenshot).

All of this even *without* setting the proxy.

Re: [Bug 1953400] Re: shutdown not working from GNOME

2021-12-08 Thread Stephen Waines
Hello Dan

Today I did the shutdown procedure in gnome. The prompts on the screen
shutting down all the processes went fine as far as I could tell.

But afterwards I noticed the screen was off but I could still see the power
light on my laptop lit. I thought it may be hung up by a process so I let
it sit for 10 minutes and when I came back the light was still on and the
screen was off as it was before.

So I can deduce that genome is shutting off the screen but some kernel
process is hanging up the system.

So when I do the shutdown procedure and this happens I have no choice but
to hold the button down for 10 seconds to force a shutdown. I'm afraid of
corrupting my journal by doing that.

Well that's the update for today.

Steve
