Initially, upgrade failed in UI.

I found 4-month bug report on similar topic, but I'm not sure how it can
be resolved: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1377997/the-package-system-

[Bug 1966147] Re: 5.13.0-37.42 terrible sound via usb

2022-03-28 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Hello vinz,

Can you help me to test this Impish 5.13 kernel?

Which contains a possible fix:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/23939115be181bc5dbc33aa8471adcdbffa28910

Steps:
1. Remove the workaround that you made and make sure you have this issue in
5.13.0-37
2. Download kernel deb files here based on your current distro, put them into a
new directory:
   impish -
https://people.canonical.com/~phlin/kernel/lp-1966066-usb-audio/impish/
2. Roll back to 5.13.0-35 by selecting the corresponding entry in GRUB
3. Remove the 5.13.0-37 kernel, otherwise it will complain about a version
conflict:
   sudo apt remove linux-image-5.13.0-37-generic
linux-image-unsigned-5.13.0-37-generic
4. Install those deb files in Step 2, with command:
   sudo dpkg -i linux-*5.13*.deb
5. Reboot to this test kernel and check the version number with `uname -vr`, it
should be something like:
   5.13.0-37-generic #42+lp1966066 SMP Tue Mar 29 02:54:38 UTC 2022
6. Test your audio and see if it helps

After your test, you can undo this change by:
A. Rolling back to 5.13.0-35 again
B. sudo apt remove linux-image-unsigned-5.13.0-37-generic
C. sudo apt install linux-image-5.13.0-37-generic

Thanks!

[Bug 1964545] Re: 42beta: moving mouse as screen is fading to screensaver prevents input to shell

2022-03-28 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Hi Daniel,

I installed gnome-shell 42.0-1ubuntu1 from -proposed, along with mutter
and others this morning and rebooted. I am no longer able to reproduce
this issue, I can move the mouse as the screen is fading, and I can
click things and enter text as normal.

I will close the bug in a couple of days if I don't see it again, but I
think it has been fixed.

[Bug 1953363] Re: [MIR] python-xmlschema, elementpath, importlib-resources

2022-03-28 Thread Alex Murray
I reviewed python-xmlschema 1.4.2-1 as checked into jammy. This shouldn't
be considered a full audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability.

python-xmlschema is a python package which provides XML schema support to
allow XML schemas to be parsed/loaded and queried etc. It also allow XML
documents to be validated against XML schema etc.

- No CVE History
- Interesting Build-Depends
  - python3-lxml, python3-elementpath
- pre/post inst/rm scripts
  - Standard auto-generated ones from dh_python3 to compile python code on
installation / delete compiled code on uninstall
- No init scripts
- No systemd units
- No dbus services
- No setuid binaries
- 3 binaries in PATH
  - utilities to translate to/from XML and to validate XML schemas
  - -rwxr-xr-x root/root 986 2021-01-27 11:04 ./usr/bin/xmlschema-json2xml
  - -rwxr-xr-x root/root 986 2021-01-27 11:04 ./usr/bin/xmlschema-validate
  - -rwxr-xr-x root/root 986 2021-01-27 11:04 ./usr/bin/xmlschema-xml2json
- No sudo fragments
- No polkit files
- No udev rules
- unit tests / autopkgtests
  - unit tests run during build via dh_auto_test
  - unit tests also run as autopkgtests
- No cron jobs
- Build logs look clean

- No processes spawned
- Memory management is not relevant as this is python
- File IO
  - As a library, will open files at paths specified by the caller of the
library
  - Since documents can refer to remote resources, includes a sandbox mode
so that remote resources will not be fetched / validated for local
documents and vice-versa, but by default will fetch all resources
- Logging is careful from what I can see
- No apparent environment variable usage
- No apparent use of privileged functions
- No use of cryptography / random number sources etc
- No use of temp files (other than during tests)
- Use of networking to load remote resources via URIs
- No use of WebKit
- No use of PolicyKit

- No significant cppcheck results
- No significant Coverity results (a bunch of false positives)
- No significant shellcheck results
- No significant bandit results

The upstream project looks quite healthy - only 5 open github issues and
247 closed ones, and the oldest open issue is from 3rd February this year.

I do note that debian recently updated to 1.10.0 - should this be synced to
jammy first? Is there a reason why this hasn't come already via the usual
Debian sync process?

Security team ACK for promoting python-xmlschema to main.

[Bug 1966841] Re: alsa/sdw: Fix the audio issue on a Dell machine without internal mic

2022-03-28 Thread Hui Wang
** Description changed:

- This bug is for tracking purpose.
+ [Impact]
+ we have a Dell ADL laptop which has sdw audio, but there is no camera
+ and no internal digital mic in this machine, the current soc driver
+ can't work on this machine, it will load a wrong tplg without this patch,
+ and the speaker and headset couldn't work.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Backport one patch from upstream.
+
+ [Test]
+ Boot the patched kernel on the machine, check dmesg, it loads the
+ correct tplg, and test speaker and headset, all work well.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+ If it could introduce regression, it will be on the sdw codec matching
+ for adl machines, then it will make the driver load wrong tplg and make
+ output device and input device not work anymore. But this possibility
+ is very low, we already tested the patch on some dell adl machines, no
+ regression found.

From the debug information, I suspect that the problem is on
/usr/lib/x86_64/dri/radeonsi_drv_video.so
My machine is AMD® Ryzen 5 5600g with integrated radeon graphics by the way

There was an update for Firefox 98.0.2
Haven't tried the apt version for the 98.0.2

Will tried that this night, hopefully the problem disappear on this new
update.

[Bug 1966796] Re: gnome-shell lost connection to Xwayland

2022-03-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Turns out both statements are true: gnome-shell is designed to survive
Xwayland crashing, and gnome-shell might crash when Xwayland crashes.

In my case:

Mar 29 11:44:48 nine gnome-shell[3392]: Connection to xwayland lost
Mar 29 11:44:48 nine gnome-shell[3392]: Xwayland just died, attempting to
recover
...
Mar 29 11:44:48 nine gnome-shell[3392]: Can't create a GtkStyleContext without
a display connection
Mar 29 11:44:48 nine gnome-shell[3392]: GNOME Shell crashed with signal 5

So on my system at least, the problem is bug 1949200.

[Bug 1966796] Re: gnome-shell lost connection to Xwayland

2022-03-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I really thought gnome-shell surviving Xwayland crashes was something
that was fixed (or scheduled to be fixed) upstream some time ago. But
occasionally there are hints in bug reports that it still doesn't
recover. Also I just tried it and killing Xwayland does kill gnome-shell
too :(

[Bug 1966796] Re: gnome-shell lost connection to Xwayland

2022-03-28 Thread Heather Ellsworth
Ok it wasn't clear to me if the fault was gnome-shell or xwayland.
Following the instructional link, I do see https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID
items, but none around this time. The workaround in bug 994921 is outdated and
the line it says to comment is no longer in the file... so I'll just see if it
happens again.

[Bug 1966635] Re: can't move file/directory by drag and drop by using touch monitor

2022-03-28 Thread Yuan-Chen Cheng
video captured as running jammy, updated @ 2022/03/29, x11 mode. (can't
drag and drop the file to move it around in Wayland mode)

To move a file by drag and drop, need to move fast. If you check the
video, if the finger moves too slow, it will show the context menu, and
no longer be able to move the file around.

[Bug 1964916] Re: [HP Omni 120-2110il AIO] Flickering white lines on screen

2022-03-28 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I don't think changing distro will fix it.

The final thing to try is the latest 'drmtip' kernel:

  https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-tip/

If the bug still isn't fixed in that latest kernel then you should
report it to the kernel graphics developers at:

  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues

2022-03-28 Thread SterlingH

It works without issue on the 5.4.0-105 kernel. I'm not really sure how
to troubleshoot these issue either but am interested in helping to solve
the problem. I can take direction and am not entirely useless.

[Bug 1924251] Re: Embedded browser display corruption under Wayland on Pi desktop

2022-03-28 Thread Dave Jones
This still seems to be an issue on the current Ubuntu Pi Jammy images
although it presents in a different manner: instead of an incorrect-
stride corruption, the embedded browser (in the same places: help
windows, or the login entries for online accounts) simply appears blank
white.

However, if the mouse cursor is moved across the blank white content of
the window, the cursor shape changes to indicate text entry fields or
clickable links indicating that the browser is likely operating
correctly but failing to render correctly.

[Bug 1965181] Re: ffmpeg: FFmpeg 5.0 (ppa:savoury1/ffmpeg5) uninstallable -- plus general SavOS discussion

2022-03-28 Thread henczati
@savoury1

Thanks for the fix and also for bringing the ffmpeg-git PPA to my attention. I
might try that on one of my systems, although -- if the ffmpeg5 PPA can be
considered more stable -- I still might use that for livecd ISO-s.
___

On the SavOS part, writing such frustrations out of your system could
help in itself (from a psychological perspective), although, honestly --
if you would allow some constructively meant remarks --, I don't think
the place/mode of presentation was well targeted or formatted.

This looks to me like blog-post material. Here, in a bug-report, IMHO, it will
reach only a negligible amount of people, those who were not just affected by
but additionally are actively dealing with this specific issue (possibly only
Pieter and me):
I might be mistaken here, but in my experience, only a small amount of the
users of a PPA...or generally software (and the more tech-savvy at that) take
the effort to deal with bugs and bug-reports themselves -- hell, even I am
sometimes "lazy" or otherwise engaged and just "idly" (from the bug's
perspective) wait for a fix if my system is not falling apart --, and even from
those people, only those read a bug-report who are currently experiencing the
problem (and are sufficiently bothered by it), and even from those people, few
will read through such a huge amount of text, especially one not (directly)
helping in the resolution of the specific bug. And after a fix, no one will
read it again until a regression happens. At least that is my experience. I see
bug-reports as a very focused medium.
As a side-note, this -- based on my very superficial impression -- seems
strongly connected to your general reaching-people issue...
(advertising/marketing/website/team-seeking/fund-raising) Allocating a bit
more resources (investing) this way might help a lot.

Unfortunately I myself have also near-to-no experience in (reasonable, modern)
website building or packaging or public interfacing for that matter. However,
I have been looking at some CMS / website generators based on git and markdown
which might scratch your itch with relatively low investment (both initial AND
long-term). E.g. Jekyll or Hugo or a lot of simpler github projects.
I don't remember the specifics of my research (earlier), but e.g. both Hugo
and Jekyll seem to integrate well together with the "GitHub Pages" service:
https://gohugo.io/hosting-and-deployment/hosting-on-github/
https://docs.github.com/en/pages/setting-up-a-github-pages-site-with-jekyll/about-github-pages-and-jekyll

Then, I would stress again to attack the issues plaguing the SavOS
ecosystem from multiple fronts. It seems to me that you enjoy working on
SavOS, and it's great if you can afford to do just that. But, IMHO,
irrespective of whether you can afford to work only on that or not, in
your place I would make a BIG priority decreasing the effort it takes to
keep SavOS alive as much as possible. As I see it, it pays off in EVERY
scenario (given you want to keep it alive).

With respect to upgrading OS and HW, I *can* see advantages to it. Risking
re-stating what you might already know, maybe I can enrich (not necessarily
change) your perspective. Let me just point out 1 thing for each:

 - From a HW perspective, shorter upgrading cycles finances development. The
results include needing significantly less energy/power to perform the same
amount of computation and/or allowing new ways to perform computations better
(e.g. parallelization). Without it, IMO, development would slow down
significantly.
On the other hand, I think (more?) optimal upgrade intervals could be found,
but they probably depend on the specific needs of businesses/userbases and the
specific abilities/capabilities of HW development companies, so it would
probably be hard to calculate for a specific circumstance, and possibly
infeasible for the general case;

 - From an OS perspective, as I (with my quite limited understanding) see it,
there are pros and cons to both point-release (release-cycle-based) and
rolling-release OS release strategies.
  To over-simplify it,
   * release cycles give a higher degree of confidence that contained software
and its feature-frozen versions works together smoothly due to more testing,
while
   * rolling releases give more freedom and cutting-edge features for the price
of less reliability for the whole to play nice together.
In the Linux ecosystem, fortunately, we can find and choose both types,
better even, distros do exist which offer both at the same time. Ubuntu,
specifically, did not offer a rolling-release for a long time, although Debian
(its base) kind-of does (see: unstable/sid).
So, in a sense, by choosing to use Ubuntu, you chose point releases.
On the bright side, based on popular request, even that actually seems to
change (at least somewhat). At the time of writing, the most recent article I
found on the subject:

Remove policy.json file in favor of policy in code

This is a work-around for a package bug. The policy.json file
was deprecated in the wallaby release in favor of using a
policy.yaml file to override the default policy in code.
Therefore the policy.json file is not needed.

[Bug 1966194] Re: [Jammy, mlx5, ConnectX-7] add CX7 support for software steering

2022-03-28 Thread dann frazier
@Amir: After preparing a backport of these changes to jammy, I've a few
comments/questions:

I dropped the following patches because they are listed as dependencies, but I
didn't have any problem cherry-picking/building without them:
c228dce262225 net/mlx5: DR, Fix code indentation in dr_ste_v1
net/mlx5: VLAN push on RX, pop on TX

Also, I see that 9/10 of Yevgeny's patches here are included:
  https://www.spinics.net/lists/netdev/msg770514.html
But one is missing. Can you clarify why the following patch is omitted?
98576013bf283 net/mlx5: DR, Add missing string for action type SAMPLER

Finally, apologies, but since we last spoke I learned that we added a new
release milestone with 21.10 that I was unaware of. There is now a kernel
feature freeze milestone:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelFeatureFreeze
And for 22.04, this milestone occurred last week. I'm looking to see if there's
an exception process for this.
