[Bug 1971009] Re: Read-only file system on a battery
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected impish ** Description changed: I have a 2021 Dell XPS 15 (9510) i7-11800H, 16 GB, 512 GB SSD, RTX 3050Ti, Windows 11 Pro. I’ve updated the following components: - replaced the RAM to 2x32 GB - added a brand new Samsung 980 Pro to the second NVMe slot On the secondary NVMe drive, I’ve installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Usually, I use Dell WD19TBS USB-C 180W to supply the power, Internet, external USB keyboard and mouse, and two monitors. When doing so, everything seems to be working perfectly for a long time whether working with Ubuntu or Windows. However, when the laptop is running on battery, I’m observing Ubuntu freezes that happen anywhere between seconds to minutes after a reboot. The keyboard stops responding, the icons go missing, and I’m getting dropped to the terminal with the following messages appearing: __ext4_find_entry:1611 inode #12272199: comm gmain: reading directory lblock 0 __ext4_find_entry:1611 inode #12272199: comm gmain: reading directory lblock 0 And after a few seconds, the following start to appear: system-journald: Failed to write entry (22 items, 750 bytes), ignoring: Read-only file system system-journald: Failed to write entry (22 items, 750 bytes), ignoring: Read-only file system It seems that disconnecting the docking station usually triggers the freeze immediately. When starting from a battery, it usually takes a few minutes before everything freezes. The only way to recover is to do a power long-press. If I do this sequence a few times - boot, wait for hang, power long-press, boot again, usually at some point the Samsung 980 Pro is no longer visible in the BIOS. I need to boot into Windows, wait a bit, reboot again, and the drive appears and it’s possible to boot to Ubuntu What I’ve tried: update Ubuntu to 21.10 update to the latest kernel: 5.13.0-41-generic update all drivers, including BIOS, from Windows using Dell SupportAssistant update Samsung 980 Pro firmware through Samsung Magican enabling Full Power Mode in Samsung Magician check SMART report for Samsung, it’s all clear change GRUB params, currently they look like this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=off nvme_load=YES nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=250 scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=0" tried also default_ps_max_latency values 0, 5500 fsck from a live boot pendrive It looks like the drive decides to go to a sleep at some point and does not wake up. Windows works well both with docking station and battery, the Samsung NVMe is recognized by Samsung Magician. Any hint what else can I check? [Bug 1969340] Re: onboard hover click cant be activated
I had a similar issue. I could activate 'Hover click' but it was flaky then would stop working. This was when I upgraded from Ubuntu Impish 21.10 to Jammy 22.04. 'Hover Click' was working fine for me in Impish but not in Jammy. I found switching from Wayland to Xorg got 'Hover click' working for me on Jammy. I don't know whether I was on Xorg or Wayland on Impish but that's what I would suggest you try out. I initially looked for solutions online and found this bug. I felt my situation was slightly different, so I decided to ask my own question. That question is now solved with an answer giving more details on switching from Wayland to Xorg that may hopefully work in your case: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/701585 Alternatively, see if upgrading to Jammy 22.04 and then using Xorg gets 'Hover Click' working. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1969340 Title: onboard hover click cant be activated To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/onboard/+bug/1969340/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1969637] Re: IBus lookup table appears bottom left of application (x11)
** Description changed: - im-config jammy SRU - === - [Impact] Changes in gnome-settings-daemon v. 42 resulted in IM issues in GNOME on Xorg. On Ubuntu the effect is that the candidate window is misplaced, and appears at the bottom of the application window instead of close to the cursor. It's an annoying enough issue to justify an SRU. - - Maybe a more proper fix (in gnome-settings-daemon) will happen later, - but in the meantime we simply let im-config set the GTK_IM_MODULE - environment variable to "ibus". [Test Plan] On an updated Ubuntu 22.04: 1. Install ibus-libpinyin 2. Run these commands: sudo locale-gen zh_CN.UTF-8 sudo update-locale LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.UTF-8 3. Reboot and log in to an Ubuntu on Xorg session 4. Add "Intelligent Pinyin" to the input sources 5. Open gedit, switch to "Intelligent Pinyin", and input something. => Find that the candidate window is misplaced. - 6. Install im-config from jammy-proposed and reboot + 6. Install gnome-settings-daemon{,-common} from jammy-proposed and +reboot 7. Repeat step 5. => Find that the candidate window is shown close to the cursor as expected. [Where problems could occur] - Setting GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus is a normal measure for Xorg sessions, and - shouldn't cause any adverse side effects. (Doing it for Wayland sessions - would have caused issues, though, but we don't do that.) + The change is an upstream MR and a one-liner. It shouldn't reasonably + affect anything but ibus configuration, and I have successfully tested + it back and forth in both x11 and wayland sessions. [Other Info] - The same change will soon be synced from unstable into kinetic. + This change has not yet reached kinetic, but will do so later when g-s-d + is upgraded. [Bug 1970594] Re: "xdg-settings check default-web-browser something.desktop" fails in Kubuntu 22.04: Bad substitution
Why in stock Ubuntu and not Kubuntu, I think is because the offending code is inside functions that are named as though only KDE is supposed to use them. For example, the default browser break is inside a function named `check_browser_kde()`. There might be some logic to determine that your stock Ubuntu, even if it is currently running a KDE session, supports testing via the gnome code paths: i.e. via `check_browser_gnome()` With regards to bash specifics inside a project declaring /bin/sh as the interpreter I would guess it is a bug that has crept through without being caught. The upstream project likely wants to remain portable and not rely on BASH so they probably should drop the BASH-isms. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1970594 Title: "xdg-settings check default-web-browser something.desktop" fails in Kubuntu 22.04: Bad substitution To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kubuntu-meta/+bug/1970594/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1818811] Re: The swapfile on the Btrfs file system is not activated
The problem is that a swapfile in btrfs cannot have CoW activated on the file, and cannot be compressed. Also, you should not leave the file in the root filesystem (even if it would work with the above settings) because it will make snapshots of /@ messy. If you manually do this, it will work: - create a separate subvolume just for swap - mount it somewhere like /swap (also add to fstab) - create an empty file (/swap/swapfile) - set non-compress and no-CoW on the file - grow the file to the desired size - mkswap on the file - add swap file to fstab now you can swapon -a and it will work. The installer does not do that, it just creates a /swapfile as it would do on any other filesystem and then on reboot it will not start. Amano instructions above will work, but I would advise to also create the subvolume. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1818811 Title: The swapfile on the Btrfs file system is not activated To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1818811/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1970264] Re: autofs fails to mount nfs4 shares with "error 0x3 getting portmap client"
** Description changed: [ Impact ] NFSv4-only shares cannot be automounted if the server isn't running (or is blocking) rpcbind, even though NFSv4 doesn't require rpcbind anymore. [ Test Plan ] You will two Jammy VMs (unfortunately lxd VMs won't work, so you will likely need to use qemu/libvirt). One will act as the NFSv4-only server, and the other will be the client with autofs configured. Here are the steps to configure the server VM: Install the NFS server: # apt install -y nfs-kernel-server Then, edit the nfs-server.service file: # systemctl edit --full nfs-server.service Remove any mentions to rpcbind.socket from the [Unit] section. Also, edit the ExecStart line to look like: ExecStart=/usr/sbin/rpc.nfsd --no-nfs-version 3 Stop and mask the rpcbind.* systemd units: # systemctl stop rpcbind.socket rpcbind.service # systemctl mask rpcbind.socket rpcbind.service Create a directory to share and export it: # mkdir /testshare # touch /testshare/testfile # echo -e '/testshare\t*(rw,sync,no_subtree_check)' >> /etc/exports Restart nfs-server: # systemctl restart nfs-server.service - Here are the steps to configure the client VM: Install nfs-common and autofs: # apt install -y nfs-common autofs Add the automount configuration for the share (replace NFS_SERVER_IP with the IP address of the server VM you've just configured above): # echo -e '/mnt\t/etc/auto.nfs' >> /etc/auto.master # echo -e 'test\t-fstype=nfsv4\tNFS_SERVER_IP:/testshare' >> /etc/auto.nfs Restart autofs: # systemctl restart autofs.service Try to access the share and notice that it won't automount: - # ls -la /mnt/test + # ls /mnt/test # You won't see any error messages unless you enable logging on autofs. To do that, uncomment the "logging" line on /etc/autofs.conf and set it to "debug". You will then see something like the following when you run "journalctl -u autofs.service": get_portmap_client: error 0x3 getting portmap client mount(nfs): no hosts available + + + You might also want to test an NFSv3 mount and make sure that it's still working as expected. In order to do that, we have to reenable the rpcbind service in the server VM because NSFv3 requires it. + + Here are the instructions to test an NFSv3-only mount on the server VM: + + Re-enable rpcbind.{socket, service}: + + # systemctl unmask rpcbind.socket rpcbind.service + # systemctl start rpcbind.socket rpcbind.service + + Edit the nfs-server.service: + + # systemctl edit --full nfs-server.service + + and change the ExecStart line to look like: + + ExecStart=/usr/sbin/rpc.nfsd --no-nfs-version 4 + + Restart the service: + + # systemctl restart nfs-server.service + + + Here are the instructions to test an NFSv3-only mount on the client VM: + + # echo -e 'test\t-fstype=nfs,nfsver=3\tNFS_SERVER_IP:/testshare' > + /etc/auto.nfs + + (Remember to replace NFS_SERVER_IP with the IP address of the server VM) + + Restart autofs: + + # systemctl restart autofs.service + + Verify that the mount still works: + + # ls /mnt/test/ + test + # [ Where problems could occur ] The patch that fixes the problem has been posted in the upstream mailing list by the maintainer, but hasn't been pushed to the git repository yet (although the maintainer said he would do this soon). I have carefully reviewed the patch and agree with the solution proposed; I have also verified that autofs' dep8 tests are still passing. I find it unlikely that the patch introduces a problem. If a regression happens, it will most likely manifest during the automount process of NFSv4 shares. We can mitigate the problem by suggesting the use of NFSv3 while we further investigate the issue, and, worst case scenario, we can revert the current fix and work with upstream to improve it. [ Original Description ] I'm running a server which provides user home directories as NFSv4 shares. The clients mount these shares via automount + LDAP. Now I've updated one client from 20.04 to 22.04 (new installation from scratch). Setting up things as before, I cannot get the home directories to mount properly. The LDAP connection does work, and also manual mounting of the NFSv4 shares works. So the problem is in the automount part of the mechanism. The autofs package version on the 22.04 client is 5.1.8-1ubuntu1. Setting autofs to verbose mode, I get the following lines in /var/log/syslog on the client. automount[115692]: mount(nfs): nfs options="nfsvers=4,hard", nobind=0, nosymlink=0, ro=0 automount[115692]: get_nfs_info: called with host <...> proto 6 version 0x40 automount[115692]: get_portmap_client: error 0x3 getting portmap client automount[115692]: mount(nfs): no hosts available I think it is the same bug reported on the autofs mailing list here:

[Bug 1970995] [NEW] grub not installed to selected location
Public bug reported: When installing Xubuntu to a USB drive, grub was installed to the computer's hard drive rather than the USB as selected. I attempted to install Xubuntu 22.04 on a USB drive by using the "Something else" installation option. Booted into a Xubuntu 22.04 live USB (/dev/sda) using UEFI boot. I created an EFI system partition (250MB), a swap partition (4000MB), and a root partition (the remaining 12-ish MB) on the destination USB drive (/dev/sdb). I also selected the destination USB (/dev/sdb) in the "Device for loader installation:" drop down (please see attached screenshot). I have used this configuration successfully for several Xubuntu 20.04 installs, so I have no reason to believe there is an issue with these options/configuration. The installation completes normally, and there does not appear to be an issue as the system will reboot into the USB drive (/dev/sdb during installation), but the computer will not boot correctly if the USB drive is removed, and the USB cannot be booted from on another computer. It appears that grub was at least partially installed on the computer hard drive (/dev/nvme0n1 in my case). /dev/nvme0n1 contains a factory Windows 11 install and a Xubuntu 20.04 install, if that is relevant. In 20.04, this processes resulted in a USB drive that could be booted from on any computer using UEFI booting while leaving the computer hard drive alone. This appears to no longer be the case with 22.04. This is my first bug submission, so please let me know if I failed to correctly submit this bug or if additional information is needed.
