[Bug 2012763] Re: qemu-system-amd64 max cpus is too low for latest processors
Hi there, I just wanted to give a quick update. I still have to perform a "real world" test using the server with more than 300 CPUs, but meanwhile I was able to test the Jammy QEMU from my PPA using a 12-core machine and it seems like we won't need to backport any patches there either. Here's the command line I used: $ sudo qemu-system-x86_64 -M pc-q35-jammy-maxcpus,accel=kvm,kernel- irqchip=split -device intel-iommu,intremap=on -smp cpus=300,maxcpus=300 -enable-kvm -net none -m 4096M -nographic -kernel /boot/vmlinuz -initrd /boot/initrd.img -chardev stdio,mux=on,id=char0 -mon chardev=char0,mode=readline -serial chardev:char0 -append "console=ttyS0" Upon booting and getting dropped into the initramfs shell, I did a "cat /proc/cpuinfo" and verified that the 300 vCPUs were correctly listed there. [Bug 2054741] Re: dpkg-buildpackage ignores DEB_BUILD_PROFILES
** Description changed: + [Impact] + DEB_BUILD_PROFILES= can be used in Debian to specify a build profile to use with dpkg-buildpackage. We want to use it in the systemd project to build the upstream packages for the Ubuntu autopkgtest cloud CI on Github. But in the Ubuntu's fork of dpkg, DEB_BUILD_PROFILES's value is ignored and unconditionally swapped with 'noudeb'. This makes it impossible to use package-specific profiles, and it's a regression w.r.t Debian. + [Fix] + + Backport patch from Noble that fixes the issue: https://code.launchpad.net/~bluca/ubuntu/+source/dpkg/+git/dpkg/+merge/461136 + and takes into account if the environment variable is set when reading the profile + + [Test] + To reproduce it, simply print the content of DEB_BUILD_PROFILES in d/rules in any package and build with DEB_BUILD_PROFILES=foo dpkg- - buildpackage. + buildpackage. Before the fix, whatever is passed via the env var is + ignored. After the fix, it will be respected. + + [Regression Potential] + + dpkg-buildpackage is used to build all packages, so in case of + unforeseen issues other packages could potentially fail to build. [Bug 2055086] [NEW] mlxbf_gige: add support for pause frame counters
Public bug reported: SRU Justification: [Impact] The BlueField-2 and BlueField-3 silicon designs include a provision for reporting pause frame counters, but the driver (mlxbf_gige) does not have software support yet. [Fix] The fix is to update the mlxbf_gige driver to support the "get_pause_stats()" callback, which enables display of pause frame counters via "ethtool -I -a ooob_net0". The support of this callback was added to Linux kernel 5.9.0 [Test Case] * Reboot BF platform, and configure oob_net0 interface * Issue command "ethtool -I -a oob_net0" to display pause frame counters * Send in multiple streams of traffic to oob_net0 interface, e.g. from two or three simultaneous SCP operations * Re-issue "ethtool -I -a oob_net0" and note difference in output [Regression Potential] The changed logic extends the ethtool support, so low risk for any problem. ** Affects: linux-bluefield (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2055086 Title: mlxbf_gige: add support for pause frame counters To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-bluefield/+bug/2055086/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2055083] [NEW] Make fips-check script aware of commit reverts
Public bug reported: [Impact] When producing a new version of some kernels, we need to check for changes that might affect FIPS certs and justify why a commit was kept. Currently there is a fips-check script that complains whenever a commit with crypto-related changes is found without any justification. However, this script does not account for cases where these commits are reverted and will fail even in these cases. [Fix] After finding the commits that touch crypto source, also look for commits that revert them. [Test Plan] Take a Jammy FIPS kernel from the 2024.02.05 cycle, which introduces two commits that touch crypto source. Revert those commits (and do not forget to follow the convention of adding `UBUNTU: SAUCE` to the commit subject). Proceed to prepare the kernel, and at the `cranky close` step, confirm that it can be run without any errors. [Where problems could occur] This only affects the preparation of FIPS kernels and not the kernel final binary. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Medium Assignee: Magali Lemes do Sacramento (magalilemes) Status: In Progress ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu Jammy) Importance: Medium Assignee: Magali Lemes do Sacramento (magalilemes) Status: In Progress ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu Noble) Importance: Medium Assignee: Magali Lemes do Sacramento (magalilemes) Status: In Progress ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu Jammy) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu Noble) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Jammy) Assignee: (unassigned) => Magali Lemes do Sacramento (magalilemes) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Noble) Assignee: (unassigned) => Magali Lemes do Sacramento (magalilemes) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Jammy) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Noble) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Jammy) Status: New => In Progress ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu Noble) Status: New => In Progress -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2055083 Title: Make fips-check script aware of commit reverts To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/2055083/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2055081] [NEW] NoCloud SMBIOS seed broken in 23.4
Public bug reported: [ Impact ] In cloud-init 23.4, specifying a datasource via the SMBIOS is broken. This is due to a commit that fixed another bug of cloud-init assuming a datasource list consisting of one datasource and 'None' doesn't need to check for the existence of that datasource. The fix here is to ensure we're always checking for the SMBIOS information, whereas in the past we didn't need to because of the automatic datasource assumption. [ Test Plan ] An integration test is being added upstream as part of https://github.com/canonical/cloud-init/pull/4949 . This test currently fails if run against 23.4. If it passes, it demonstrates that the fix works. The test specifies a datasource seed directory via SMBIOS and ensures that the userdata contained within that seed ran correctly. It can be run manually using: tox -e integration-tests -- tests/integration_tests/datasources/test_nocloud.py::test_smbios_seed [ Where problems could occur ] Since this code sits at the interaction of datasources discovered and found via ds-identify and python, along with bits of fallback code to dmidecode, we could have missed an interaction here that could possibly mis-identify the NoCloud datasource in other ways. [Bug 2036467] Re: Resizing cloud-images occasionally fails due to superblock checksum mismatch in resize2fs
Thanks for the update, Matthew. We're looking forward to getting this fix from Ubuntu. My team patched our version the e2fsprogs package from Focal about a year ago, before we submitted the fix upstream. Since that patch, we haven't had any re-occurrences of the problem. It used to show up about 4-5 times a day for us. [Bug 1056101] Re: grub-efi overwrites an existing grub*.efi file
@mkukri A couple of years ago I had 2 installations of EndeavourOS on two different partition, and the Efi menu showed 2 different entries. I can't remember exactly but the menu entries looked like these: - EndeavourOS 12345... - EndeavourOS 14789... I don't know if the boot process is meant to work as it works in Ubuntu or as it works in EndeavourOS. At least it looks it is possible to have two different Efi menu entries for 2 different installation of the same system... and it's good. If for any reason my default system is broken and I can't access the other grub menu entries, I can still select a working system from the Efi menu. [Bug 2055055] Re: unmkinitramfs: wrong and unneeded count= in a dd call
Just found out, aside for skip_bytes iflag, there is also count_bytes one. So another fix count be: 113: dd < "$initramfs" skip=$start count=$((end - start)) iflag=skip_bytes,count_bytes 2> /dev/null | ** Description changed: Speaking about this line in unmkinitramfs: - 113: dd < "$initramfs" skip=$start count=$((end - start)) + 113: dd < "$initramfs" skip=$start count=$((end - start)) iflag=skip_bytes 2> /dev/null | - - dd's block size is 512 by default. iflag=skip_bytes does not change that. Both $end and $start are byte-offsets. Hence the count is ($end-$start) blocks or ($end-$start)*512 bytes which is wrong. + dd's block size is 512 by default. iflag=skip_bytes does not change + that. Both $end and $start are byte-offsets. Hence the count is + ($end-$start) blocks or ($end-$start)*512 bytes which is wrong. Anyways, the script just works because the count is unneeded: dd's output is piped into cpio which stops on the first end-of-archive marker, no matter how much data it is fed with. I think it is the best to just drop the count option (the patch is attached). + If there is still a need to explicitly limit data fed to cpio, dd is + impractical in this case. The only way to count= in bytes is bs=1, which + makes dd extremely slow on lengthy data chunks. For example + ubuntu-23.10.1-desktop-amd64.iso contains initrd with embedded + uncompressed cpio archives of such sizes: - If there is still a need to explicitly limit data fed to cpio, dd is impractical in this case. [Bug 2055055] [NEW] unmkinitramfs: wrong and unneeded count= in a dd call
Public bug reported: Speaking about this line in unmkinitramfs: 113: dd < "$initramfs" skip=$start count=$((end - start)) iflag=skip_bytes 2> /dev/null | dd's block size is 512 by default. iflag=skip_bytes does not change that. Both $end and $start are byte-offsets. Hence the count is ($end-$start) blocks or ($end-$start)*512 bytes which is wrong. Anyways, the script just works because the count is unneeded: dd's output is piped into cpio which stops on the first end-of-archive marker, no matter how much data it is fed with. I think it is the best to just drop the count option (the patch is attached). If there is still a need to explicitly limit data fed to cpio, dd is impractical in this case. The only way to count= in bytes is bs=1, which makes dd extremely slow on lengthy data chunks. For example ubuntu-23.10.1-desktop-amd64.iso contains initrd with embedded uncompressed cpio archives of such sizes: 77312 7200768 78615040 A combo of dd+head could be used intead to skip and count respectively: 113: dd < "$initramfs" skip=$start iflag=skip_bytes 2> /dev/null | head -c$((end - start)) Or even tail+head: 113: tail -c+$((start+1)) "$initramfs" | head -c$((end - start)) ** Affects: initramfs-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Patch added: "dd-count.patch" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2055055/+attachment/5749511/+files/dd-count.patch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2055055 Title: unmkinitramfs: wrong and unneeded count= in a dd call To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/initramfs-tools/+bug/2055055/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1904265] Re: Deterministic bluetooth disconnects after login and bluetooth restart
It seems as I found a permanent fix. In case anyone having the same issue, this approach fixed it for me: 1. Unpair the mouse in Windows, i.e. delete it inside the Bluetooth settings. This will delete the respective keys in the Windows registry, too. 2. Unpair the mouse in Ubuntu, i.e. revoke the connection inside the settings menu. Thereafter, check whether the respective directory inside /var/lib/bluetooth// still exists and if so, delete it (requires root privileges). 3. Reboot Ubuntu. 4. Repair the mouse in Ubuntu, this will create a new directory inside /var/lib/bluetooth//. 5. Verify that the connection works after rebooting / restarting the Bluetooth service without any freezes. 6. Thereafter, start Windows and repair the mouse there, too. This of course will overwrite Ubuntu's setting, but the directory and the configuration files exists, only the keys will become invalid by the Windows pairing. 7. Verify that the mouse works fine in Windows, too, in particular after rebooting etc. 8. Restart Ubuntu and adjust the configuration files accordingly, i.e. transfer the keys and maybe rename the directory inside /var/lib/bluetooth// accordingly to match the Windows configuration (as described in various tutorials). 9. Thereafter, my mouse worked fine with both, Windows and Ubuntu. ** Description changed: Hello everyone, a few months ago I upgraded from 18.04 to 20.04 and since then, I'm into some bluetooth connection issues. I'm a KDE user currently using Ubuntu 5.4.0-53.59-generic 5.4.65, still the reported issue also appears with plain ubuntu 20.04, even a clean live USB version of ubuntu 20.04 reproduces it such that it is independent of any KDE library. I've noticed the following bug already a few months ago, still I would like to wait and see if it might be resolved with a new kernel update or something else. Since it still persists, I now would like to report it to the devs. I found no similar reported bug but if it already has been reported, I'd like to excuse for reporting a duplicate. So, I'm using a Logitech bluetooth LE mouse and with ubuntu 18.04 (actually on any distro based on 18.04 that I tested), everything works fine and without any problems. Still with 20.04, I'm into the following bug that I would like to report. After starting ubuntu, the bluetooth connection to the mouse works (i.e. pointer is moving) and after about 30-40 seconds it stops moving and freezes for about 10-15 seconds and thereafter works again and stays working. The same issue can be reproduced by executing (for instance on a live ubuntu) sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart which stops the bluetooth connection for a few seconds (as expected), immediately it works again but after additional 30-40 seconds, the connection breaks for another 10-15 seconds and thereafter works flawlessly. I checked all configuration files from the /etc/bluetooth/ directory, everything is the same between 18.04 and 20.04 and even modifying the parameters does not change anything at all. As a conclusion of my testing I strongly guess it has either anything to do with a different kernel version or a with a changed bluetooth library between 18.04 and 20.04. So in summary: Expected behavior: Bluetooth connection shortly breaks after 'sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart' and does not break again after 30-40 seconds (as it is the case with ubuntu 18.04) Actual behavior: Bluetooth connection breaks again after reestablishing the connection - I'm hoping that this issue can easily be fixed and please let me know if you need any further information :-) - --- - ProblemType: Bug - ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu27.4 - Architecture: amd64 - AudioDevicesInUse: - USERPID ACCESS COMMAND - /dev/snd/controlC0: ubuntu 5435 F pulseaudio - /dev/snd/controlC2: ubuntu 5435 F pulseaudio - /dev/snd/controlC1: ubuntu 5435 F pulseaudio - CasperMD5CheckResult: pass - CasperVersion: 1.445.1 - CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME - DistroRelease: Ubuntu 20.04 - LiveMediaBuild: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS "Focal Fossa" - Release amd64 (20200731) - MachineType: HP HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-cx0xxx - NonfreeKernelModules: zfs zunicode zavl icp zcommon znvpair - Package: linux (not installed) - ProcEnviron: - TERM=xterm-256color - PATH=(custom, no user) - XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= - LANG=en_US.UTF-8 - SHELL=/bin/bash - ProcFB: 0 EFI VGA - ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/username.seed maybe-ubiquity quiet splash nomodeset --- - ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.4.0-42.46-generic 5.4.44 - RelatedPackageVersions: - linux-restricted-modules-5.4.0-42-generic N/A - linux-backports-modules-5.4.0-42-generic N/A - linux-firmware1.187.2 - Tags: focal - Uname: Linux 5.4.0-42-generic x86_64 - UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) - UserGroups: adm cdrom dip lpadmin lxd

[Bug 2054925] Re: Debootstrap fails for Noble with base-files 13ubuntu7
** Description changed: [Impact] The last couple of days, I have been unable to run a successful debootstrap for Noble Numbat. Apparently this is caused by the addition of symlinks (/bin, /lib, /lib64 and /sbin) in base-files 13ubuntu7. According to debootstrap.log, it fails to extract said symlinks because they already exist at that point. This can be reproduced on build hosts running Jammy Jellyfish against any up-to-date Ubuntu public archive mirror as of today. # lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS Release: 22.04 Codename: jammy # apt-cache policy debootstrap debootstrap: Installed: 1.0.126+nmu1ubuntu0.5 Candidate: 1.0.126+nmu1ubuntu0.5 Version table: *** 1.0.126+nmu1ubuntu0.5 500 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy-updates/main amd64 Packages 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy-updates/main i386 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 1.0.126+nmu1 500 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/main amd64 Packages 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/main i386 Packages Attached shell output of two runs of debootstrap. First run uses mirror archive.ubuntu.com (which as of this report serves base-files version 13ubuntu7), and second run uses a local custom mirror (which serves base-files 13ubuntu6). First run fails, second run succeeds. [Test plan] - Successfully - - debootstrap focal - - debootstrap jammy - - debootstrap mantic - - debootstrap noble + Successfully for each of focal, jammy, mantic, noble + - debootstrap + - mksbuild + - pbuilder whatever chroot management tool it has + - ubuntu-image, if we can pull debootstrap from proposed for this + + as well as + - debootstrap noble --merged-usr - both in buildd and normal variant, also specifically for noble, - --merged-usr should be ignored. [Where problems could occur] We do not anticipate any regressions as we replace the previous *) case for usrmerge for post-hirsute with a new jammy|kinetic|lunar|mantic one, and the new solution will only impact noble and onward. That said, this is a different approach than mantic and newer take, and a different approach than Debian takes, where they moved to merging post-extraction, even in stable releases. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2054925 Title: Debootstrap fails for Noble with base-files 13ubuntu7 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/base-files/+bug/2054925/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2051850] Re: [MIR] trace-cmd
Review for Source Package: trace-cmd [Summary] MIR team ACK under the constraint to resolve the below listed required TODOs and as much as possible having a look at the recommended TODOs. Although the package can pass our security check-list, trace-cmd itself runs as root to setup events in ftrace kernel subsystem. This combined with the use of setuid/setgid in trace-record.c (change_user()) and extensive use of malloc/sprintf, I think are good enough reasons for a sec review. This does need a security review, so I'll assign ubuntu-security, after the required TODOs are addressed. List of specific binary packages to be promoted to main: trace-cmd, libtracecmd1,libtracecmd-dev Specific binary packages built, but NOT to be promoted to main: Notes: Required TODOs: 1. Other dependies to MIR: a. libtracefs - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libtracefs/+bug/2051925 b. libtraceevent - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libtraceevent/+bug/2051916 2. No tests during build, please add tests. 3. No autopackage tests present. This TODO incorporates Christain's feedback (comment #2) "but on this level we should require to set up some good autopkgtests that help us to ensure this full stack is really working well on e.g. changed kernels." Please add autopackage tests. Recommended TODOs: 4. The output of 'lintian --pendatic --tag-display-limit 0' yields many warnings some of them segfaults. Not sure if this is a problem of the package or troff but please take a look. (https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/JYGrJ7wnJz/) 5. There a few warning (unused return values) during build 6. The package should get a team bug subscriber before being promoted [Rationale, Duplication and Ownership] There is no other package in main providing the same functionality. Foundations team is committed to own long term maintenance of this package. The rationale given in the report seems valid and useful for Ubuntu [Dependencies] OK: - no -dev/-debug/-doc packages that need exclusion - No dependencies in main that are only superficially tested requiring more tests now. Problems: - other Dependencies to MIR due to this [Embedded sources and static linking] OK: - no embedded source present - no static linking - does not have unexpected Built-Using entries OK: - not a go package, no extra constraints to consider in that regard - not a rust package, no extra constraints to consider in that regard Problems: None [Security] OK: - history of CVEs does not look concerning - does not run a deamon as root - does not use webkit1,2 - does not use lib*v8 directly - does not parse data formats (files [images, video, audio, xml, json, asn.1], network packets, structures, ...) from an untrusted source. - does not expose any external endpoint (port/socket/... or similar) - does not process arbitrary web content - does not use centralized online accounts - does not integrate arbitrary javascript into the desktop - does not deal with system authentication (eg, pam), etc) - does not deal with security attestation (secure boot, tpm, signatures) - does not deal with cryptography (en-/decryption, certificates, signing, ...) Problems: - this does not make appropriate (for its exposure) use of established risk mitigation features (dropping permissions, using temporary environments, restricted users/groups, seccomp, systemd isolation features, apparmor, ...) [Common blockers] OK: - does not FTBFS currently - This does not need special HW for build or test - no new python2 dependency Problems: - does not have a test suite that runs at build time - does not have a non-trivial test suite that runs as autopkgtest [Packaging red flags] OK: - Ubuntu does not carry a delta - symbols tracking is in place. - debian/watch is present and looks ok (if needed, e.g. non-native) - Upstream update history is good - Debian/Ubuntu update history is slow - the current release is packaged - promoting this does not seem to cause issues for MOTUs that so far maintained the package - debian/rules is rather clean - It is not on the lto-disabled list Problems: - massive Lintian warnings - https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/JYGrJ7wnJz/ [Upstream red flags] OK: - no use of sudo, gksu, pkexec, or LD_LIBRARY_PATH (usage is OK inside tests) - no important open bugs (crashers, etc) in Debian or Ubuntu - no dependency on webkit, qtwebkit, seed or libgoa-* - not part of the UI for extra checks - no translation present, but none needed for this case (user visible)? Problems: - a few warnings during the build about ignoring return values - heavy use of malloc and sprintf - use of setuid/setgid ** Changed in: trace-cmd (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete ** Changed in: trace-cmd (Ubuntu) Assignee: Ioanna Alifieraki (joalif) => (unassigned) ** Changed in: trace-cmd (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Paul Mars (upils) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is
