[Bug 49008] Re: Files with special characters in filename can't be opened
I have exactly the same problem, and actually reported a duplicate bug. However, it turned out that the problem was not reproduced when I logged into a different user account on the same computer. Have you tried this? For me at least the problem must be due to the configuration of my own user account. I suspect this is because of some old config files in my home directory. The Ubuntu installation started out as Hoary Hedgehog back in 2005 and I have upgraded it several times all the way to Lucid. The other user account, for which I cannot reproduce the problem was created around Hardy times I think. [Bug 147230] Re: Changing workspaces via scrollwheel on desktop is problematic, especially when using touchpad
As pointed out by Lightbreeze, metacity does allow scrolling through the workspaces with mousewheel over the panel applet. But, it is still a bad idea, please don't follow metacity on that. This is a fundamental usability problem: 1. It is fairly easy to accidentally scroll the mouse wheel, especially on a laptop. 2. If the effect is dramatic, the user will get confused and annoyed. The unexpected switching through multiple desktops is equally confusing no matter where the mouse pointer happens to be located. Since the desktop switcher applet occupies the edge pixels, it is in effect infinitely large, and accidental scrolling through desktops happens annoyingly often (for me at least). This bug report has a lot in common with bug #39328, which is about scrollwheeling through the window list. Technically they are separate bugs, as they apply to different components, but they should be regarded as instances of the same usability problem. -- Changing workspaces via scrollwheel on desktop is problematic, especially when using touchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147230 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 279424] [NEW] random freezes lasting approximately 4 minutes on intel 915GM
Public bug reported: I have like many others experienced random freezes on Hardy Heron. I have noticed a pattern related to the freezes that I thought I should report. 1) The lockup lasts for about 4 minutes every time. During the freeze, the panel clock is also frozen and will always jump 4 minutes when the lockup is over. Since the timescale of the freeze is so predictable, I thought maybe the problem can be narrowed down by considering time limits or fixed maxima of iterations in the kernel? 2) The lockup happens with or without user activity, like when I am not interacting with the computer for a few minutes. 3) The lockup is always in companion with a firmware error in the ipw2200 wireless. However, I am not sure about cause and effect of this 4) booting with noapic option has no effect 5) I have noticed that the freeze at least sometimes comes in companion with a cronjob 6) when the freeze is over, many (but I think not all) of the keys I have pressed and the movement of the mouse I have done during the freeze is processed rapidly. Some things I have tried: uninstalling powernowd reduced the frequency of the lockups running dosbox reduces the frequency of the lockups Ctrl-Alt-F1 or Ctrl-Alt-Backspace does not work during the freeze, and is not processed after the freeze. I have prepeared attachments which I will upload. dmesg and syslog was taken directly after a freeze, and I have inserted some comments. I attach syslog because it shows the cronjob entry. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- random freezes lasting approximately 4 minutes on intel 915GM https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/279424 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 39328] Re: Offer option to disable scroll wheel on task list
I landed here when I was googling for a way to turn off the mousewheel control of the workspace-switcher. I am using a laptop and the sudden workspace shifting is pretty annoying. Since it seems there is no way to turn this off, I have to say this "feature" is terribly bug-like... To disable all scrolling as suggested by Cheshirecat86, is not a good alternative as most applications make very good use of the mouse wheel.
