[Bug 49008] Re: Files with special characters in filename can't be opened

2011-01-14 Thread Øyvind Jensen
I have exactly the same problem, and actually reported a duplicate bug.
However, it turned out that the problem was not reproduced when I logged
into a different user account on the same computer. Have you tried
this?

For me at least the problem must be due to the configuration of my own
user account. I suspect this is because of some old config files in my
home directory. The Ubuntu installation started out as Hoary Hedgehog
back in 2005 and I have upgraded it several times all the way to Lucid.
The other user account, for which I cannot reproduce the problem was
created around Hardy times I think. Do you all have installations that
was first installed way back?

2011-01-14 Thread Øyvind Jensen
For some reason OpenOffice is not able to access files with non-english
characters on my computer. The problem does not exist for a different
user on the same computer, so it has to be something in my
configuration. I have absolutely no idea what could be the cause of
this, but someone might have a suggestion?

[Bug 702831] [NEW] openoffice cannot open paths with non-english characters

2011-01-14 Thread Øyvind Jensen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When I open files with a path that contains one of the non-english
characters æ, ø or å, OpenOffice fails with the message:
/absolute/path/to/file/with/an/ø does not exist. This happens for the
Writer, Calc and Impress components.

I attach an empty odt file with a name that triggers the bug on my
computer.

[Bug 506387] Re: log messages of wpa_supplicant are undocumented

Thanks Tony, I changed the description as you suggested.

** Description changed:

In the process of debugging a failing wireless connection, I noticed
lots of messages is /var/log/syslog stating that "Supplicant state
changed: 0". Sometimes it says "Supplicant state changed: 1". The
problem is that these messages are not documented anywhere, so the
  information is essentially useless.

My suggestion is that the log messages should be modified to state in
  words what is going on.

- Alternatively, the man-page of wpa_supplicant (or possibly
- networkmanager) could include a table giving an overview of what the
- different states mean.

[Bug 147230] Re: Changing workspaces via scrollwheel on desktop is problematic, especially when using touchpad

2009-06-22 Thread Øyvind Jensen
As pointed out by Lightbreeze, metacity does allow scrolling through the
workspaces with mousewheel over the panel applet. But, it is still a
bad idea, please don't follow metacity on that.

This is a fundamental usability problem:
1. It is fairly easy to accidentally scroll the mouse wheel, especially on a
laptop.
2. If the effect is dramatic, the user will get confused and annoyed.

The unexpected switching through multiple desktops is equally confusing
no matter where the mouse pointer happens to be located. Since the
desktop switcher applet occupies the edge pixels, it is in effect
infinitely large, and accidental scrolling through desktops happens
annoyingly often (for me at least).

This bug report has a lot in common with bug #39328, which is about
scrollwheeling through the window list. Technically they are separate
bugs, as they apply to different components, but they should be regarded
as instances of the same usability problem.

There was a cronjob entry recorded immediately after the freeze first
freeze, but not for the second or the third freeze.

Here are more detail about the timing:
1. freeze: 17:16 - 17:21:00
2. freeze: 17:26 - 17:30:18
3. freeze: 17:32 - 17:37

I now just started dosbox hoping that the freezes will take break as I
am trying to do something...

Syslog with comments is attached.

[Bug 279424] Re: random freezes lasting approximately 4 minutes on intel 915GM

2008-10-07 Thread Øyvind Jensen
Again I had a new 4 minute freeze, this time proving that

8) booting with pci=noacpi has no effect

Again there is a cron job in the syslog, however this time the cron job
entry was recorded immediately after the freeze. The cron job was

Oct 7 22:53:48 ubuntulaptop /USR/SBIN/CRON[25600]: (mail) CMD ( if [
-x /usr/lib/exim/exim3 -a -f /etc/exim/exim.conf ]; then
/usr/lib/exim/exim3 -q ; fi)

2008-10-07 Thread Øyvind Jensen
I just had a new freeze showing that:

7) booting with pci=routeirq has no effect

This time the freeze happened just after a cronjob entry in syslog.
Lasted 4 minutes as usual

[Bug 279424] [NEW] random freezes lasting approximately 4 minutes on intel 915GM

2008-10-06 Thread Øyvind Jensen
Public bug reported:

I have like many others experienced random freezes on Hardy Heron. I
have noticed a pattern related to the freezes that I thought I should
report.

1) The lockup lasts for about 4 minutes every time. During the freeze,
the panel clock is also frozen and will always jump 4 minutes when the
lockup is over. Since the timescale of the freeze is so predictable, I
thought maybe the problem can be narrowed down by considering time
limits or fixed maxima of iterations in the kernel?

2) The lockup happens with or without user activity, like when I am not
interacting with the computer for a few minutes.

3) The lockup is always in companion with a firmware error in the
ipw2200 wireless. However, I am not sure about cause and effect of this

4) booting with noapic option has no effect

5) I have noticed that the freeze at least sometimes comes in companion
with a cronjob

6) when the freeze is over, many (but I think not all) of the keys I
have pressed and the movement of the mouse I have done during the freeze
is processed rapidly.

Some things I have tried:
uninstalling powernowd reduced the frequency of the lockups
running dosbox reduces the frequency of the lockups
Ctrl-Alt-F1 or Ctrl-Alt-Backspace does not work during the freeze, and is not
processed after the freeze.

I have prepeared attachments which I will upload. dmesg and syslog was
taken directly after a freeze, and I have inserted some comments. I
attach syslog because it shows the cronjob entry.

[Bug 39328] Re: Offer option to disable scroll wheel on task list

2008-08-18 Thread Øyvind Jensen
I landed here when I was googling for a way to turn off the mousewheel
control of the workspace-switcher. I am using a laptop and the sudden
workspace shifting is pretty annoying. Since it seems there is no way
to turn this off, I have to say this "feature" is terribly bug-like...

To disable all scrolling as suggested by Cheshirecat86, is not a good
alternative as most applications make very good use of the mouse wheel.
(like scrolling, zooming, slider control etc...)
