[Bug 1360580] Re: [Hyper-V] IP injection does not occur on Ubuntu 14.10

2014-09-05 Thread Abhishek Gupta
The IP injection issue on 14.10 is resolved as tested successfully using
the daily build from Sept 2nd.

There is one small glitch in how hv_set_ifconfig runs, as after several
runs it keeps adding the line “# The following stanza(s) added by
hv_set_ifconfig” for every pass.

This is the setip execution output:

[Bug 1317695] [NEW] hyper-v: Unable to copy and boot Generation 2 Ubuntu 14.04 VHDs

2014-05-08 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Public bug reported:

After creating a Generation 2 virtual machine, we are unable to shutdown
the VM, copy the VHD and create a new Generation 2 virtual machine out
of the VHD. It seems that once the copy out operation has occurred, the
UEFI boot entry is not available on the file-system. This hinders
scenarios where customers routinely copy VHDs to create new virtual
machines. Root cause unknown as of now.

hv_set_ifconfig is indeed distro specific but it is failing because the ifstate

enough explanation and I shall dig deeper.

[Bug 1297012] Re: hyper-v: Manual partitioning formats /boot with ext2 file-system

2014-04-02 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Hi Dimitri,

Thanks for the explanation. The reason we are having trouble with ext2
is because ext2 does not seem to have a freeze file-system interface.
The freeze interface typically flushes all dirty buffers to disk and
allows the creation of a file-system consistent snapshot prior to
backup. If we take a non file-system consistent backup then restoring
the volume later would cause fsck checks that may alarm users or corrupt
the file-system in unknown ways.

We can recommend customers to use ext4 in our documentation however it
is often that people just go with the default choice. This is the reason
why we were wondering if you could change the boot file-system to ext4.

If you do not expect /boot to be modified then wouldn't the journal have
a very low impact anyway? Could we tune the journal to be of a small
size?

Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks,
Abhishek

[Bug 1301019] [NEW] hyper-v: ifdown command not working due to bad ifstate

2014-04-01 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Public bug reported:

It appears that ifdown command is not working because
“/run/network/ifstate" does not contain eth0=eth0.

This in turn causes hyper-v's script hv_set_ifconfig.sh to fail as
follows:

root@ubuntu:~# ./hv_set_ifconfig.sh /var/lib/hyperv/ifcfg-eth0
ifdown: interface eth0 not configured
RTNETLINK answers: File exists
Failed to bring up eth0.

It appears that something is wrong with your core networking files for trusty.
Please could you help fix?

[Bug 1298192] [NEW] hyper-v: Unable to take backups of Generation 2 VMs

2014-03-26 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Public bug reported:

We are unable to take backups of Generation 2 VMs because they include a
FAT 32 EFI partition. This patch ignores such partitions while freezing
the file-system to take a snapshot during the initial stages of the
backup process. Since EFI partition is not expected to be modified
regularly, the ignore functionality should address the problem. Please
include the following upstream patch in the vss daemon:

Tools: hv: vssdaemon: Ignore VFAT mounts during the Freeze operation
If the guest has a FAT file system mounted, skip it during the FREEZE
operation. With this change we can support host initiated backup of
the guest even when the guest may have FAT file systems mounted.

[Bug 1295401] [NEW] hyper-v: IP Injection failing on trusty

2014-03-20 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Public bug reported:

Hi folks,

It appears that the hyper-v specific script hv_set_ifconfig.sh in the
hv-kvp-daemon-init package is failing because of the following:

The occurrence of “IF_NAME” in hv_set_ifconfig.sh needs to be changed
to “DEVICE” because the resulting KVP generated file /var/lib/hyperv
/ifcf-eth0 has “DEVICE” and not “IF_NAME” eventually.

These are the current code snippets in hv_set_ifconfig.sh using
"IF_NAME" and they need to be changed to "DEVICE" instead:

if not "IF_NAME" in kvp :
exit(1)

output=[]
basename=kvp["IF_NAME"]

Please let us know if you need more information. Also please ensure that
the script is updated for all server, client and azure ISOs and
installers.

Thanks,
Abhishek

[Bug 1294253] [NEW] hyper-v: Enabling dynamic memory on Hyper-V may lead to persistent load value of 1

2014-03-18 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Public bug reported:

It appears that if you enable dynamic memory on Hyper-V, and then run
the top command then load metrics may always show 1 for the 1 minute
average (See attached image). This is because the ballooning mechanism
sleeps in uninterruptible mode which adds to the system load metric.
Please use the following upstream patch to eliminate this problem:

Drivers: hv: Ballon: Make pressure posting thread sleep interruptibly

next.git/commit/drivers/hv/hv_balloon.c?id=5dba4c56dfa660a85dc8e897990948cdec3734bf

[Bug 1292216] Re: hyper-v: Hyper-V drivers missing from UEFI based installer

2014-03-14 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Hi folks,

I confirm that the drivers are not present in the server builds located
here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/daily/current/.

Please can you help find out the reason?

The drivers are there in the client builds. Our test guys confirmed this
by opening up the initrd in the ISO. We see the following contents in
the initrd:

abhishek@abhishek-Virtual-Machine:/tmp/content$ ls
bin etc initrd lib64 mnt run sys usr
dev init lib media proc sbin tmp var

abhishek@abhishek-Virtual-Machine:/tmp/content$ find . -name '*hv*'
./lib/modules/3.13.0-17-generic/kernel/drivers/hv
./lib/modules/3.13.0-17-generic/kernel/drivers/hv/hv_vmbus.ko

abhishek@abhishek-Virtual-Machine:/tmp/content$ find . -name '*hyperv*'
./lib/modules/3.13.0-17-generic/kernel/drivers/input/serio/hyperv-keyboard.ko

The remaining drivers that are needed are:

hv_utils
hv_mouse
hv_storvsc

Please let us know how we may help further.
Thanks,
Abhishek

Thanks Andy for the explanation. We are seeing that the desktop release
can be booted in to generation 2 mode but the server release cannot.
Every time I try to boot the server release, I get an error saying that
it could not mount the ISO. Do you think, this could be happening due to
a missing ata_piix driver? Please let me us know. In the meantime we
will continue to triage it at our end.

[Bug 1292216] Re: hyper-v: Hyper-V drivers missing from UEFI based installer

2014-03-13 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Hi Tim,

Thanks for checking. Two follow up questions:

a) How come these modules lister under virtio-modules? Shouldn't they be
in some hyper-v specific folder?

b) Previously we were missing the keyboard driver as outlined in the
bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1285434

>From the notes in the above bug, it seems like Andy added the keyboard
driver but not the other drivers. Are you sure you are looking at the
right build? From what you are describing, it appears that all drivers
except the keyboard driver are available.

As a side note, the keyboard driver is available here:

http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-
next.git/tree/drivers/input/serio/hyperv-keyboard.c?id=HEAD

Please let me know if you need more info.

We are unable to create Generation 2 VMs because Hyper-V drivers are
missing from the UEFI based alternate installer for server builds. The
ask is to include all hyper-v drivers in to the alternate server
installer. Please see below bug for more details:

2014-03-09 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Public bug reported:

Due to a bug in the Hyper-V host verion 2008R2, we need to use a
slightly smaller receive buffer size, otherwise the buffer will not be
accepted by the legacy hosts. Without this fix, the network driver will
not load while hosting Trusty on Server 2008R2. The following patch
addresses the problem:

[Bug 1272664] Re: Installing UEFI boot entry on Hyper-V gen 2 corrupts VM configuration, making the VM unuseable

The problem appears to be in the following UEFI structures:

[Bug 1272664] Re: Installing UEFI boot entry on Hyper-V gen 2 corrupts VM configuration, making the VM unuseable

2014-03-06 Thread Abhishek Gupta
There are two bugs here:

a) The UEFI boot entry seems to be created incorrectly. It appears that
there are 6 extra zeroes in the Hard Drive Media Device Path as shown in
Red (See attached picture). We suspect that the structure related to the
hard drive media device path is not packed because of which it's size is
coming out to be 0x30 bytes instead of the expected 0x2A as per UEFI
specifications.

As of now we are examining the files in the Linux kernel that may be
relevant to the hard drive media device path and will shortly post the
names of the files that might be containing this issue.

b) Hyper-V is unable to deal with improperly formatted hard drive media
device paths. The problem has been reported to the Hyper-V team and will
be addressed in future.

I have added the relevant Ubuntu people to this issue. Please take note and fix
the problem.
Thanks,
Abhishek

[Bug 1285434] Re: hyper-v: Keyboard dysfunctional while booting 14.04 Generation 2 virtual machines on Hyper-V

2014-03-03 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Hi Andy, That solved the keyboard problem but now the installer cannot
read the CDROM device. See attached picture.

Perhaps we need to include all other Hyper-V drivers as well so that
block devices can be accessed. Is it possible for you to include all
Hyper-V drivers in the installer? If not then I think we should at least
put storvsc and netvsc in. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Abhishek

Hi Andy, I do think that might be the case. The installer does look different
from the regular Ubuntu installer which is activated for non-UEFI based virtual
machines. Is it possible for you to verify this theory at your end as well? I
will try to debug from host side and send a confirmation today.

2014-02-27 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Thanks for confirming Joseph. This is the first time I tested with
Generation 2 VMs so not sure if it was caused by a recent update.

I have not tested with upstream kernel because this is happening while
the installer is running. I could try out the upstream kernel if I could
get past the installation stage.

Do you think the keyboard driver is active when the installer is
running? Please take a look at the attached pictures to get more context
and let me know how I may help further.

[Bug 1274702] Re: Hyper-V KVP infrastructure not working properly

2014-01-31 Thread Abhishek Gupta
We are seeing this with both Ubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 13.10. The problems
are slightly different on the two versions as I mentioned above.

On Ubuntu 12.10, the default kernel version is 3.5.0-17 and the tools
package that is installed is linux-tools-3.5.0-45.

On Ubuntu 13.10, my setup shows kernel version 3.11.0-9 but tools show
3.11.0-12.

There is definitely such mismatch. Have you guys tested this on hyper-v?
Please let us know if you need more information.

[Bug 1274702] [NEW] Hyper-V KVP infrastructure not working properly

2014-01-30 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Public bug reported:

The Hyper-V KVP package is required to display various metadata from a
virtual machine. Currently, the package is installed by using the
following command:

sudo apt-get install hv-kvp-daemon-init

However the installed drivers and daemons do not start even after
rebooting the VM.

One some further investigation it seems that the kernel installed
through the Ubuntu 12.10 ISO is different from the kernel for which the
package is compiled and that is why the daemons do not start. After
upgrading the kernel manually to match the package, the daemons could be
started. After talking to Ben it appears that the kernel should have
been automatically upgraded once the hv-kvp package was installed and
this might be an issue.

For Ubuntu 13.10, we saw that we have to use two commands to install the
hv-kvp package:

apt-get install linux-tools-3.11.0-15-generic
apt-get install hv-kvp-daemon-init

Furthermore, even after installing the packages, the daemons are not
available under /usr/sbin and have to be manually moved there. Can we
make the hv-kvp package dependent on the Linux-tools package? Also can
be automatically store in the daemons on the correct disk location?

Please let us know.
Thanks,
Abhishek

[Bug 1269576] [NEW] Include Hyper-V Host to Guest File Copy Feature in Ubuntu 14.04

2014-01-15 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Public bug reported:

Hi folks,

We would like to include a new Hyper-V feature in Ubuntu 14.04. This
feature allows an administrator to copy a file from host to guest
without using the network. The feature does not restrict the contents or
the location of data that is being copied in to the VM. The feature has
both a driver and a daemon and the daemon acts as root while copying out
the data.

The full fix is about to come and is under discussion. The last update
can be seen in the following thread

https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/1/14/470

Further information regarding use is available here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn464282.aspx

Please let me know if you need further information.
Thanks,
Abhishek

Furthermore, the hid_hyperv kernel module is not present at all for this

[Bug 1233466] Re: Hot-Add Memory failing for lack of udev rule

2013-10-10 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Hi Martin, Thanks for accommodating the request for the udev rule. The
rule needs to live in the guest as Hyper-V does not understand udev
rules.

Yes, we did test with Andy's udev rule from comment 14 and it seems to
work. Only issue we saw was that it seemed to suppress some of our other
drivers such as:

1. hyperv-fb
2. hv_utils
3. hv_balloon

It would be really helpful if you guys could do some unit testing to
ensure that our drivers are loaded even after adding the udev rule then
that would be great.

The entire patch along with complete conversation is available here:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/linux.kernel/AxvyuQjr4GY/TLC-

Btw, another thought is that we do realize that the udev rule is not the
best solution here but given the release time frame perhaps we can
compromise a little. We will be more than happy to work with you to
provide an alternate solution. However releasing 13.10 with risks of
panics is more worrisome and we might want to avoid that.

Hi Martin, I will circle back with KY and reply by tomorrow morning on
this. What we are trying to convey here is that this was discussed with
the kernel folks and they shot down the kernel patch which would have

I apologize for not being clear In the above statement. I meant to imply that
please include the udev rule we have provided as without it we will run in to
kernel panics.

If you absolutely do not want to include the udev rule we can send you
the kernel patch which was debated upon and perhaps you guys can carry
that until further resolution with the kernel community.

Let me know what you think.

[Bug 1233466] Re: Hot-Add Memory failing for lack of udev rule

2013-10-09 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Hi guys,

We went the alternate route of trying to convince kernel folks of fixing
this problem through a patch. Unfortunately, the patch was rejected. The
discussion involved is quoted below. Please also note that in the above
patch we can remove the CPU hotadd request command as that is
extraneous:

# CPU hotadd request
 SUBSYSTEM=="cpu", ACTION=="add", DEVPATH=="/devices/system/cpu/cpu*[0-9]",
TEST=="online", ATTR{online}="1"

Please include the memory hotadd patch as not including it may lead to
kernel panics related to memory management.

Thanks,
Abhishek

Sorry, but memory is different than all other devices. You never need a
mouse in order to add another mouse to the kernel.

I'll repaste something I said earlier in this thread:

> A system under memory pressure is going to have troubles doing a
> hot-add. You need memory to add memory. Of the two operations ("add"
> and "online"), "add" is the one vastly more likely to fail. It has to

So, no, it makes no sense to just have userspace always unconditionally
online all the memory that the kernel adds. But, the way it's set up,
we _have_ a method that can work under lots memory pressure, and it is
available for users that want it. It was designed 10 years ago, and
maybe it's outdated, or history has proved that nobody is going to use
it the way it was designed.

If I had it to do over again, I'd probably set up configurable per-node
sets of spare kernel metadata. That way, you could say "make sure we
have enough memory reserved to add $FOO sections to node $BAR". Use
that for the largest allocations, then depend on PF_MEMALLOC to get us
enough for the other little bits along the way.

Also, if this is a problem, it's going to be a problem for *EVERY* user
of memory hotplug, not just hyperv. So, let's see it fixed generically
for *EVERY* user. Something along the lines of:

1. Come up with an interface that specifies a default policy for
newly-added memory sections. Currently, added memory gets "added",
but not "onlined", and the default should stay doing that.
2. Make sure that we at least WARN_ONCE() if someone tries to online an
already-kernel-onlined memory section. That way, if someone trips
over this new policy, we have a _chance_ of explaining to them what
   is going on.
3. Think about what we do in the failure case where we are able to
"add", but fail to "online" in the kernel. Do we tear the
newly-added structures down and back out of the operation, or do
we leave the memory added, but offline (what happens in the normal
   case now)?

available under /etc/init.d . The script was used to kick start our
hv_kvp_daemon service. I have uploaded the script from Ubuntu 12.10 to
this mail. We need to include this script and also write a similar one
for hv_vss_daemon. Please let me know if you need more info.

Thanks,
Abhishek

We tested it. The storage issue is fixed. Please could you combine this
fix with the display driver issue:

Hey Andy,

Is it possible for you to combine the fix for this bug and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1234413 in your private kernel. That way
we can test it end to end. Please let us know.

Thanks,
Abhishek

[Bug 1233376] Re: hv_kvp_daemon and hv_vss_daemon are missing from linux-tools

2013-10-02 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Hi there! It seems that the daemons are now in /usr/sbin however there
are no startup scripts to kickstart the daemons. Please is it possible
for you to include the startup scripts in init.d so that the daemons are
loaded at boot time? Please let me know.

Thanks,
Abhishek

[Bug 1233466] Re: Hot-Add Memory failing for lack of udev rule

2013-10-02 Thread Abhishek Gupta
Hi there! The udev rule works but after installing the following udev
package the following drivers do not load anymore:

1. hyperv-fb
2. hv_utils
3. hv_balloon

Is this just a side effect or something else is wrong? Please let us
know.

Thanks,
Abhishek
