[Bug 1297012] Re: hyper-v: Manual partitioning formats /boot with ext2 file-system
Hi Dimitri, Thanks for the explanation. The reason we are having trouble with ext2 is because ext2 does not seem to have a freeze file-system interface. The freeze interface typically flushes all dirty buffers to disk and allows the creation of a file-system consistent snapshot prior to backup. If we take a non file-system consistent backup then restoring the volume later would cause fsck checks that may alarm users or corrupt the file-system in unknown ways. We can recommend customers to use ext4 in our documentation however it is often that people just go with the default choice. This is the reason why we were wondering if you could change the boot file-system to ext4. If you do not expect /boot to be modified then wouldn't the journal have a very low impact anyway? Could we tune the journal to be of a small size? Let me know your thoughts. [Bug 1272664] Re: Installing UEFI boot entry on Hyper-V gen 2 corrupts VM configuration, making the VM unuseable
There are two bugs here: a) The UEFI boot entry seems to be created incorrectly. It appears that there are 6 extra zeroes in the Hard Drive Media Device Path as shown in Red (See attached picture). We suspect that the structure related to the hard drive media device path is not packed because of which it's size is coming out to be 0x30 bytes instead of the expected 0x2A as per UEFI specifications. As of now we are examining the files in the Linux kernel that may be relevant to the hard drive media device path and will shortly post the names of the files that might be containing this issue. b) Hyper-V is unable to deal with improperly formatted hard drive media device paths. The problem has been reported to the Hyper-V team and will be addressed in future. I have added the relevant Ubuntu people to this issue. Please take note and fix the problem. Thanks for confirming Joseph. This is the first time I tested with Generation 2 VMs so not sure if it was caused by a recent update. I have not tested with upstream kernel because this is happening while the installer is running. I could try out the upstream kernel if I could get past the installation stage. We are seeing this with both Ubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 13.10. The problems are slightly different on the two versions as I mentioned above. On Ubuntu 12.10, the default kernel version is 3.5.0-17 and the tools package that is installed is linux-tools-3.5.0-45. [Bug 1274702] [NEW] Hyper-V KVP infrastructure not working properly
Public bug reported: The Hyper-V KVP package is required to display various metadata from a virtual machine. Currently, the package is installed by using the following command: sudo apt-get install hv-kvp-daemon-init However the installed drivers and daemons do not start even after rebooting the VM. One some further investigation it seems that the kernel installed through the Ubuntu 12.10 ISO is different from the kernel for which the package is compiled and that is why the daemons do not start. After upgrading the kernel manually to match the package, the daemons could be started. After talking to Ben it appears that the kernel should have been automatically upgraded once the hv-kvp package was installed and this might be an issue. For Ubuntu 13.10, we saw that we have to use two commands to install the hv-kvp package: apt-get install linux-tools-3.11.0-15-generic apt-get install hv-kvp-daemon-init Furthermore, even after installing the packages, the daemons are not available under /usr/sbin and have to be manually moved there. Can we make the hv-kvp package dependent on the Linux-tools package? Also can be automatically store in the daemons on the correct disk location? Please let us know. Hi Martin, Thanks for accommodating the request for the udev rule. The rule needs to live in the guest as Hyper-V does not understand udev rules. Only issue we saw was that it seemed to suppress some of our other drivers such as: 1. hyperv-fb 2. hv_utils 3. hv_balloon It would be really helpful if you guys could do some unit testing to ensure that our drivers are loaded even after adding the udev rule then that would be great. In the meantime you can install 13.10 using server dailies instead: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/daily/current/ Thanks, Abhishek -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1199345 Title: Can't install on Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1 (error video) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1199345/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1234413] Re: Display driver is malfunctioning for Ubuntu 13.10 VMs on Hyper-V Server 2008R2
It appears that this is not a problem for Ubuntu 13.10 server as the installation mode is primarily text based. However, Microsoft will still like to get this fix included as it seems that people install Ubuntu client as well on a regular basis (See bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1199345). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1234413 Title: Display driver is malfunctioning for Ubuntu 13.10 VMs on Hyper-V Server 2008R2 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1234413/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1233466] Re: Hot-Add Memory failing for lack of udev rule
Hi guys, We went the alternate route of trying to convince kernel folks of fixing this problem through a patch. Unfortunately, the patch was rejected. The discussion involved is quoted below. Please also note that in the above patch we can remove the CPU hotadd request command as that is extraneous: # CPU hotadd request SUBSYSTEM=="cpu", ACTION=="add", DEVPATH=="/devices/system/cpu/cpu*[0-9]", TEST=="online", ATTR{online}="1" Please include the memory hotadd patch as not including it may lead to kernel panics related to memory management. Sorry, but memory is different than all other devices. You never need a mouse in order to add another mouse to the kernel. I'll repaste something I said earlier in this thread: > A system under memory pressure is going to have troubles doing a > hot-add. You need memory to add memory. Of the two operations ("add" > and "online"), "add" is the one vastly more likely to fail. It has to > allocate several large swaths of contiguous physical memory. The intention was that you could "add" far in advance and > then "online" under memory pressure, with the "online" having *VASTLY* > smaller memory requirements and being much more likely to succeed. So, no, it makes no sense to just have userspace always unconditionally online all the memory that the kernel adds. But, the way it's set up, we _have_ a method that can work under lots memory pressure, and it is available for users that want it. It was designed 10 years ago, and maybe it's outdated, or history has proved that nobody is going to use it the way it was designed. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably set up configurable per-node sets of spare kernel metadata. That way, you could say "make sure we have enough memory reserved to add $FOO sections to node $BAR". Use that for the largest allocations, then depend on PF_MEMALLOC to get us enough for the other little bits along the way. Also, if this is a problem, it's going to be a problem for *EVERY* user of memory hotplug, not just hyperv. So, let's see it fixed generically for *EVERY* user. Something along the lines of: 1. Come up with an interface that specifies a default policy for newly-added memory sections. Currently, added memory gets "added", but not "onlined", and the default should stay doing that. 2. Make sure that we at least WARN_ONCE() if someone tries to online an already-kernel-onlined memory section. That way, if someone trips over this new policy, we have a _chance_ of explaining to them what is going on. 3. Think about what we do in the failure case where we are able to "add", but fail to "online" in the kernel. Do we tear the newly-added structures down and back out of the operation, or do we leave the memory added, but offline (what happens in the normal case now)? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1233466 Title: Hot-Add Memory failing for lack of udev rule To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1233466/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
