[Bug 1975340] [NEW] Boinc Manager (Pre-Release) Daemon Start failure:
Public bug reported: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS running Boinc 7.18.1+dfsg-4 problems. 1st. after install starting the Boinc client error msg. is you do not have access to Var Lib. I corrected that by adding my user id to the Boinc group and changing the ownership of the group in the Boinc-client folder in etc lib. from root to Boinc. After restarting Boinc the next msg. is "Boinc Manager (Pre-Release) Daemon start failure. Then the client and manager disconnect indicated by the icon in the lower right corner of Boinc. I even tried having the boinc daemon start up at IPL and it made no difference I receive the same error msg. Another Ubuntu user in Ubuntu Redit described the same problem and couldn't fix it so his solution was to restore Ubuntu 20.04 and Boinc worked fine again. Is this really a Pre-Release of Boinc, and if so why was it included in a Long Term Support release instead of the current production version of Boinc for linux? Thanks for your help. Cheers, Ace ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 22.04 Package: boinc-client 7.18.1+dfsg-4 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.15.0-30.31-generic 5.15.30 Uname: Linux 5.15.0-30-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu82.1 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: pass CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Fri May 20 19:40:25 2022 InstallationDate: Installed on 2022-05-18 (2 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS "Jammy Jellyfish" - Release amd64 (20220419) ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE=en_CA:en PATH=(custom, no user) XDG_RUNTIME_DIR= LANG=en_CA.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: boinc UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: boinc (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug jammy wayland-session -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1975340 Title: Boinc Manager (Pre-Release) Daemon Start failure: To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/boinc/+bug/1975340/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1256468] Re: Evince loses ligature when highlighting
In the attached testcase (evinceligbug.pdf), the ligature comes from an alternate font as code 0x56, ASCII 'V'. Whether or not the ligature is blank on highlighting or shows V depends on whether V is present in the subsetted font that the rest of the word uses. One could argue that showing V is a feature not a bug, as it is a V that goes into the copy/paste buffer. But evince is inconsistent; if you highlight the lone ff earlier in the document (the one that isn't embedded in a word) it shows ff, not blank or V. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1256468 Title: Evince loses ligature when highlighting To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/1256468/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1256468] [NEW] Evince loses ligature when highlighting
Public bug reported: Evince renders a PDF document containing ff ligatures (taken from a different font than the surrounding text comes from) correctly upon first opening the file, but fails to render an ff ligature when the word containing it is highlighted with the cursor. [Bug 1066871] [NEW] The command 'Make Link' creates multiple file copies
Public bug reported: (Note:- 64bit 12.04 ubuntu (and variants of it) do not exist! So I have had to say that I don't know where I found the bug.) This looks like a serious bug to me - others have confirmed this by repeating the test below: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=12296573#post12296573 *** Try to make a document link: Open Gedit - copy and paste a few bytes of text - save as 'AA-test' in your document dir. Open Nautilus and check your doc dir - yes it's there. Rclick it - 'make link'. What you now see is a new file called 'Link to AA-test ' - both are the same file size. Dclick the 'Link to' file and delete a couple of bytes (2 characters), and save. My sys is set to make bakups, so I now see: Link To AA-test~_ 945bytes AA-test 943bytes Link To AA-test__ 945bytes The above is clearly incorrect cos my bakup file is called 'Link To' Now open 'AA-test' directly, and delete 2 more characters and save. I now see: AA-test 941bytes Link To AA-test~_ 945bytes AA-test~___ 943bytes Link To AA-test__ 945bytes It seems conclusive that 'make Link' is not functioning correctly. Further tests can be made, eg. rename 'Link To' - 'Linq To'. When you load it in Gedit, top-left informs you are working on 'Linq To AA-test'. Apart from this being confusing.. it looks like instead of having a small link file, my doc, and my bakup doc. I now have 4 full size docs wasting space on my HDisk. This is surely a bug no? ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1066871 Title: The command 'Make Link' creates multiple file copies To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1066871/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 1066871]
Yes this was a bug report about ubuntu 'make link' so it had no package. There is even some dispute over whether this is a bug, or whether ubuntu is working as planned, only that it could be doing it a whole lot better. The counter arguments are laid out in the link in the initial report. Mark Sheriff On Mon, 2012-10-15 at 16:20 +, Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot wrote: Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. [Bug 1022232] Re: installing boinc-client requires too much dependencies
I think boinc-manager may need some more graphic stuff, since it needs X, but boinc-client is all commandline stuff. The original poster put is as a question on launchpad, I made it a bug. I am 100% sure other packages like git do not install so much nonsense. I am 100% sure that a command-line only package doesnt' require so much libs. [Bug 1022232] [NEW] installing boinc-client requires too much dependencies
Public bug reported: On a personal server with no X environment installed. I am wondering at some of the dependencies of the boinc-client package. One in particular that comes to mind is bluetooth... why is that a dependency? I can understand the i386 libraries... it does however seem there are a quite a few extra packages in there. Perhaps I am ignorant to some of the needs of various projects out there. If that is the case... cool! Let me know. Thank you. [Bug 13319] Re: nautilus should sort by extensions
Nautilus 2.32.2.1 All those years ago, Vincent was absolutely correct. Over 6 years later...6 years, and still the same horrendous problem exists. (In reply to comment #1) I'm not sure that's useful to add such options. Yes it is.. my goodness... Yes it is! It's not just useful ... It's an utter necessity. I read with horror, the response made by Seb Bacher: I'm sure that some people have some files sorted in a best way with the type rather than the extension. I just don't see how this statement can be true. One can't rename files, or change extensions at whim, so how can anybody have them sorted in the best way, by using type?? It just doesn't work: /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/70603113.PMO /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/A9OL4VF8.PMO /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/ADDR64C2.PM! /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/ADDR64C2.PMR /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/ALLADDS.PM! /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/ALLADDS.PMR /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/B1EBOV2P.PMO /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/B1R3F2HD.PMO /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/BEGJ8868.PMO /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/BUSINESS.PM! /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/BUSINESS.PMR /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/DESKTOP.PM0 /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN/EOWM12D2.PMO In the above example, the directory contains many hundreds of files, and it is mission critical that I have them grouped together, for staged pasting into a new folder. It was a nightmare here's what i had to do: /home/mark/Temp data/ADMIN /home/mark/Temp data/CNM /home/mark/Temp data/pmi /home/mark/Temp data/PMM /home/mark/Temp data/singles I created dirs named by extension, then trolled thru admin, cutting and pasting files into appropriate dirs - just to sort them! In 2011 i'm having to figure out some micky mouse way of sorting files, when in windows explorer, it would have been * a single mouse click *. In fact, to be fair what i should have done. was: reboot to win7, and do the whole job using win explorer. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/13319 Title: nautilus should sort by extensions To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nautilus/+bug/13319/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 537946] [NEW] Notification area causes X to freeze (caused by banshee)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: banshee Karmic 64-bit I am not sure if it is banshee or notify-osd, but i've only seen it happen when banshee does the notificating. This is what happens: at some point, a banshee notification pops up (f.i. to tell us what's playing). It might disappear completely or only half (30% transparent). Next thing that happens is that you can't touch the inside of a window anymore. Nothing works: can't type in it, can't block and copy things. (F.i. firefox is open; when the bug happens, you can't type a new URL in the address bar; can't fill in a form, etc). But you can still drag the window around the screen. You can also still move focus from one window to another (clicking on the window makes it active). You can't close or minimize the window. The gnome-panel accepts clicks, and the icon depresses (like it was activated) but the attached program (for instance Force Quit) won't start. After that, you can't use the gnome-panel at all anymore. The only thing you can do is drag windows around the screen. (They stay 'clean', i.e. they don't 'trail' images of themselves around the desktop). Going to another machine and remotely login (since Alt-Ctrl-F1 don't work no more neither) and look at top, there is (for example) a notify- osd which takes 6.9 % of total RAM (3GB ram in machine). Killing the notify-osd (SIGHUP) frees up X. Suddenly the Force Quit app shows up (that was the last click on the Gnone-panel) and everything works again. Instead of killing notify-osd, it's also possile to pkill -9 banshee. This will also free X. I have no way of reliably reproducing the bug. banshee: Installed: 1.5.1-1 Candidate: 1.5.1-1 Version table: *** 1.5.1-1 0 500 http://bika karmic/universe Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status notify-osd: Installed: 0.9.24-0ubuntu1 Candidate: 0.9.24-0ubuntu1 Version table: *** 0.9.24-0ubuntu1 0 500 http://bika karmic/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ** Affects: banshee (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Notification area causes X to freeze (caused by banshee) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/537946 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Patch ubiquity to run these commands in the /target chroot AFTER raid has been partitioned and ubuntu has been installed to make / accessible from initramfs by updating mdadm.conf : chroot /target /usr/share/mdadm/mkconf /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf chroot /target update-initramfs -u With these two small changes, it's possible for a user that knows how to partition and raid from command line to install ubuntu on his raid device from ubiquity, using manual partitioning. I tried it and it work perfectly. And it's the first step to make raid accessible from LiveCD. And since grub2, it's not necessary for partman to make sure that /boot is installed on a different partition. [Bug 419601] [NEW] random short freezes caused by System Monitor?
Public bug reported: This is a far stretch for a bug report, but I am just reporting what I experienced. On a Jaunty Ubuntu 9.04 system, 64bit, Compiz disabled, nvidia driver 180.44 I had the following: Rhythmbox was playing music constantly. I have several apps open: Thunderbird, Firefox, Virtualbox with a virtual Ubuntu 9.10 with 512 MB Ram, machine has 4GB of ram but reports only 3 GB, several other apps. Randomly the system seems to freeze for a couple of seconds - no mouse movement and music stops playing. Then it unfreezes and the mouse is working again and the music continues. (The music is read from an NFS mount). No difference if the Virtualbox is running, or the virtualbox is running with only 256 MB ram. When I switch apps, it freezes *almost* always. I have also disabled swap as mem is on 70% only. I have system monitor running, cpu is not at max. This random freezes happen very often, sometimes while just typing email or typing in firefox (both inside the host and the guest). Keyboard repeats in the guest, like helo and stuff like that. Totally weird. After a couple of days (uptime system is 12 days) I decided to change the update frequency of the system monitor from 1.25 to 0.25 and... the problem went away! Then changed back to 1.25. And the problem did not happen again (yet). No clue. Could this be related to System Monitor?? I don't require an answer. I just want to report it. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- random short freezes caused by System Monitor? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/419601 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 402767] Re: multisearch CSE breaks l18n+setfocus+images+cached+I'm feeling lucky functionality and violates user trust
Good day, I will explain the reason why I was shocked. Not why A USER was shocked. It may help the marketing people at Canonical to improve their efforts to eliminate launchpad bug #01 The reason why I was shocked is that the new 'google' homepage lacked functionality that I had on the old 'google' homepage. On the old page there was a bar with buttons that made it very easy to switch from web search to image search and video search (and some others that I use less). To stress this fact, I couldn't care less if Canonical would make money of my searches or did some aggregate data collection (anonymously I presume). Actually, I would be happy of they can make money of my searches for 'Ubuntu 9.04 copy paste functionality third mouse button vanished' or 'Ubuntu Jaunty Firefox memory problem'. Be my guest! It's just that I got used to using that one google page for nearly all my searches and that it had some great buttons that disappeared after an Ubuntu upgrade. And that it was hard to find the way back. (Hint: disable multi search add-on in firefox). That's all I gotta say about that. John Moser wrote: This is a stupid argument. I've read about half of it. Let me summarize: 1. People are shocked at new functionality. Because it breaks old functionality. This happens, this is a legitimate complaint; however, stop being psycho about it. 2. People are shocked at the concept of having data collected. This is a legitimate argument for data collected about them; however, the data being collected here IS ABOUT SOFTWARE. How did a user get to here? Not how did Alex get here, but how did A USER get here? More importantly, 6,000 searches were performed; how many used the start page, how many went to Google.com, how many used the Google search bar? People are complaining that data is being collected from them, but not about them. Meanwhile, in the log files for Google, every search you've ever sent shows up with your IP address; they don't analyze it (maybe, maybe they do), but they collect it in far more detail than you care to complain about. 3. People are even more shocked that Ubuntu may garner revenue from some method the user isn't informed about. Why not be shocked that the tiles at the airport are piezoelectric generators that collect electricity as you walk? How dare they! Seriously, people, what the hell is your problem? Please explain exactly what threat there is here. What huge violation of your rights is occurring when data you send out across a network winds up on somebody's servers? Especially when said data is concerned with WHAT you did and not WHO did it, and thus the software discards anything that has anything to do with anything other than what part of the screen was clicked (i.e. your IP, your user name, where the hell you came from, etc)? I read this entire thread as FIGHT THE POWAH MAN! STICK IT TO THE MAN! MAKING MONEY IS BAD! KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR USERS IS BAD! Re: [Bug 342923] Re: [i945] (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc.
If I wear my dummy user hat this is unacceptable, and I'm considering ranting loud about general Ubuntu regressions at each and every new version. I just want to let you know that I feel much the same way. Well put! I've been a Linux user and supporter since 10+ years and sometimes a little code contributor in the past. I'm now professionally managing parks of Linux machines as well as advising non-I.T. friends and relatives. From both points of view it is completely unacceptable that when performing a version upgrade, oh, graphics get broke on this machine, sound is lost on that machine, fglrx driver doesn't exist anymore for ATI cards, KDE SSL certs support has been broke for the whole KDE 4.x branch and not fixed even if bugs reports have been made 10 months ago, kernel is now compiled without USB_persist, WPA2 isn't supported anymore in Jaunty, Xen Dom0 kernel is missing since Intrepid and on... What the fsck is going on ? A geek can live with that and spend 1 day trying to figure out ONE problem, dig into a config file, read forums, recompile kernel on ONE machine when upgrading, but how could a professional managing a park of machine stand to live with that at each upgrade ? How could a professional tolerate that SSL certs support suddently disappears between KDE 3.x and 4.x and nothing is done in 10 months to fix it ? And how could non-I.T. more or less clueless beginner users (at whom Ubuntu also aims) find acceptable losing sound or graphics and having no clue when they upgrade ? I don't know what Ubuntu's doing but I'm starting to get really really angry at it generally speaking... I had to state it somewhere, now it's done in that bug report :-( Except for unforeseen and unpredictable bugs, a version upgrade should never break anything that used to work, or something is seriously broke with the project management, period. -- [i945] (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/342923 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 366968] [NEW] Update manager flashes on screen before being minimized
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: update-manager When there are updates in Jaunty (904) and the update manager starts, it shows the update-manager window and shows the window minimizing (with animation). This can be seen when all other windows have been minimized or when there are no windows in the way of the update-manager window. This behavior is very distracting and grabs the users attention as it flashes on the screen, the exact thing the new notification system is supposed to prevent. This is just my opinion but maybe a better solution is that when the update manager starts it is in the background but doesn't have its task listed in the panel. Just like the dialog box that is popped up when downloading/installing things in synaptic (I'm not sure if this is even possible). Thus making in unable to be minimized only closed, this would also remove it from the ALT-TAB list. Another alternative might be that the update manager doesn't show up in the task panel until it is minimized, essentially popping open in the background but not visible until you change and/or minimize the window you are working in. Notes: 1. This is seen when not using a composite desktop, I'm not sure of the behavior when you do run one. 2.
