I think this might even be good enough to be considered for default
behavior — I suspect opening next to the current one would be less
confusing and more convenient for most users.

I wholeheartedly disagree.  Whenever you click or Ctrl+K into the
searchbar, it selects all the text anyway.  Text remaining there is a
non-issue, but strict loss of functionality (loss of the ability to
repeat searches) is.

This would cause the same problem as
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=537013 but worse.
