[Bug 1650076] Re: Evince continues to scroll when window/workspace changed

2017-01-08 Thread Aibara Iduas
** Description changed:

-
- When scrolling using a pointing stick (at least with trackpoints on
Thinkpads) Evince will continue to scroll when the window or workspace is
changed. The user's place is quickly lost.
+ When an image or portion of text in a pdf is clicked in Evince, dragged
+ (as if to drag it to another application), then let go of, Evince will
+ continue to scroll depending on where the pointer is placed, even if the
+ window or workspace is changed. The user's place is quickly lost.

  To reproduce:

- Open a multi-page pdf with Evince.
- Go to some random page.
- Scroll up.
- Hit alt-tab quickly, switching to another program.
- The page will continue to scroll.
+ 1.) Open a pdf with Evince.
+ 2.) Left click on an image or page of a if it is an image, or select some
text.
+ 3.) With the left mouse button held down, drag it so that the "hand holding a
document" icon appears.
+ 4.) Let go of the left mouse button.
+ 5.) Go to another window or desktop, and note that depending on the location
of the mouse on the screen Evince, even unfocused, will scroll the pdf in that
direction (e.g. up if the mouse is near the top).

- Note that the page scrolls depending on where the mouse is on screen.
- This continues even if the workspace is changed or the user switches to
- other windows, even clicking and typing in them. The only way to stop
- Evince from scrolling is to go back to Evince and click or scroll again.
+ The only way to stop Evince from scrolling is to go back to Evince and
+ click or scroll again.

- This might be reproducible with a mouse and scroll button, but I don't
- have one handy. I can't, however, get it to reproduce when scrolling
- with keys or the touchpad. Switching windows also needs to happen
- quickly, otherwise it does not occur.
+ I've tested this on with Evince 3.18.2 on Ubuntu 16.04. This did not
+ occur back in 14.04.

- I've tested this on two different Thinkpads running Ubuntu 16.04 and
- Evince 3.18.2. This only occurs in Evince, no other program I've ever
- used. It didn't occur back in 14.04.
+ (Edited to include easier method of reproduction.)

[Bug 1603691] Re: Lock screen incorrectly displays "num lock is on" warning

2016-07-17 Thread Aibara Iduas
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1526322 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1526322

Sorry, but I don't believe this bug is a duplicate of #1526322, which is
about the warning showing up and people thinking its unnecessary.

This is about the warning showing up and never going away, even if num
lock is not on.

Though if the solution to #1526322 is to get rid of the warning
altogether it doesn't matter much.

[Bug 1603691] [NEW] Lock screen incorrectly displays "num lock is on" warning

2016-07-16 Thread Aibara Iduas
Public bug reported:

When the screen is locked an ! icon is displayed that states "num lock is on"
even though num lock is off. Turning num lock on or off has no effect, the
warning remains. The warning does not appear on the login screen at all (even
if num lock is actually on!).

The icon didn't use to be there. I think it turned on only once I turned
num lock on and off in a session. Logging out or restarting does not fix
the issue.

I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 with Unity 7.4.0 on a Thinkpad T420s.

[Bug 1596214] Re: Volume button no longer repeats

2016-06-29 Thread Aibara Iduas
Sorry, just realized my original description said that the buttons
worked fine with a "16.06" live cd... someone changed it to "16.10," but
what I meant was 16.04 (Xenial). That is, Xenial as it was released in

[Bug 1574121] [NEW] gedit has two .desktop files, causing duplicate "open with" entries

[Bug 1559225] [NEW] Gthumb window decorations broken in Unity

[Bug 1402059] Re: Small gap appears in Firefox main window after first use of globalmenu

2016-02-22 Thread Aibara Iduas
This is still a problem in Firefox 44 on a stock install of 15.10. When
Unity's menu bar is opened, Firefox's menu bar is opened as well, but it
only shows up as a two pixel-tall line. If you go to the customize
screen the thin line is visible there; you can even add icons and
whatnot to it.

This probably hasn't gotten the attention it deserves because older
Firefox profiles may not be affected. Well, those two lines of pixels
are lost but the tabs don't suddenly shift down so you don't notice that
anything is wrong (I didn't realize the issue until I reset my Firefox
profile). I'm not sure what version of Firefox changed this behavior.

Regardless, I can confirm Carol Cannas' fix works great.

a Thinkpad T420s, using an nvidia GF119M [NVS 4200M] (rev a1).
Incidentally, now that I upgraded, even though I've purged everything I can

[Bug 1376862] [NEW] Muting sound effects no longer changes event-sounds setting

2014-10-02 Thread Aibara Iduas
Public bug reported:

Muting or unmuting the sound effects in the system settings (just the
alerts, not the entire system's sound) used to change this dconf
setting: org/gnome/desktop/sound/event-sounds. Now that setting does
nothing, and nothing seems to change when the GUI mute button is hit (as
seen by using dconf watch /).

The system sounds still do get muted/unmuted, but there is no way to
configure this without going through the GUI now. I assume that this is
a bug and not by design, since other sound settings do change a dconf
setting (e.g. Allow louder than 100%, which sets /com/ubuntu/sound
/allow-amplified-volume to true/false).

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04, version 14.04.3+14.04.20140922-0ubuntu1 of

I'm not sure where the new icons are being pulled from (some seem to
come from the system icon theme) but I assume this is a bug. Regardless
it looks pretty ugly.

The compose window looks quite odd too, not sure if this is related.

[Bug 1338814] [NEW] dm-tool lock command does display proper lock screen

2014-07-07 Thread Aibara Iduas
Public bug reported:

The dm-tool lock command does not bring up the normal lock screen
(achieved when using Unity by hitting Ctrl+l), but rather a user
switcher screen that allows for logging in as another user. It also has
a few other different properties, like showing an accessibility icon
(not displayed in the regular lock screen and stopping any playing music
(which continues to play in the regular lock screen).

It seems to do the exact same thing as the command dm-tool switch-to-
greeter.

This has the side effect of, since Ubuntu 14.04, making it impossible to lock
the screen from the terminal.
See here for a discussion of older methods that no longer work:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/457204/how-can-i-lock-the-screen-using-the-new-lockscreen-from-the-command-line

Thanks.

[Bug 1338814] Re: dm-tool lock command does display proper lock screen

2014-07-07 Thread Aibara Iduas
Actually, I should clarify: if you invoke gnome-screensaver-command -l
and gnome-screensaver is installed it will work properly if used from
the desktop, but not in certain other cases (e.g. logged in via SSH).

Why is invoking the Unity lock screen via the command line coupled with
gnome-screensaver, which is not needed anyhow?

[Bug 1338814] Re: dm-tool lock command does display proper lock screen

2014-07-07 Thread Aibara Iduas
Neither of those work in 14.04. The first brings up the gnome-
screensaver lock screen (if you even have it installed, which I don't),
the second the lock screen of whatever screensaver you use (in my case
xscreensaver). They do not bring up the Unity lock screen.

[Bug 1337926] [NEW] Switching workspaces: launcher stays grey panel does not update

2014-07-04 Thread Aibara Iduas
Public bug reported:

When switching workspaces, occasionally (1 out of 10 times, sometimes
more frequently) the launcher and panel do not update. This means that
although a worskpace is opened with a focused window, the panel still
reads Ubuntu Desktop and the launcher is gray (as it is when selecting
workspaces). The launcher is still functional and can bring other
windows forward, but it stays gray and the panel still says Ubuntu
Desktop. They only update properly whenl the user either switches
desktops again or activates a window spread.

See the attached screenshot. In it, Firefox is actually focused, so the
panel should read New Tab - Mozilla Firefox. And, of course, the
launcher should not be gray.

I wonder if it is related to showing menus in the window's title bar
setting, since I can't seem to reproduce it with the old global menu.
Not sure about that though.

[Bug 1290697] Re: Font rendering is broken

2014-04-19 Thread Aibara Iduas
Jeff is correct.

Easy way to reproduce: take a short text file and view it in Gedit,
making sure that all the text appears within the window, the font is
fine. If you start resizing the window, the second a scroll bar appears
(i.e. some of the text is hidden) the font becomes distorted.

Maybe this has something to do with the new Unity decorations?

[Bug 1290697] Re: Font rendering is broken

2014-04-19 Thread Aibara Iduas
I applied your fix, Jeff, and it did make everything consistent and
prevent Gedit from changing. However, all the fonts look slightly
thinner. Granted, they look better than with that dconf setting set to
rgba without your font.conf file (and also better to the Gedit-with-
scrollbars one), but they are still off. See attached (top is the normal
rendering, the bottom with your fix).

I had no fontconfig files at all in my home directory, so I don't think
that's what could be causing the problem.

[Bug 1309777] [NEW] Ubuntu themes cause Nautilus to flash when changing directories

2014-04-18 Thread Aibara Iduas
Public bug reported:

The new theme in Trusty causes Nautilus to flash pink when a directory
is entered. This only occurs when viewing files and folders in list
view, not icon view. See attached image.

This is just a guess, but it might be related to this fix, since in Saucy the
pink flash did not occur (but the columns did shift about):

[Bug 1290691] Re: gThumb has no window decorations

2014-04-07 Thread Aibara Iduas
Including a stable version of gThumb (i.e. the 3.2 series) in Trusty
would make a lot of sense, considering it's an LTS release focused on
stability. There are definitely a lot of bugs in the 3.3 series, from
minor to fairly major (e.g. the image rendering speed being very slow
compared to the 3.2 series, see:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=726087).

The 3.3 series might look nice on GNOME, but in no other DE, including
Unity (which is of course Ubuntu's default). It seems that you can't
even access the preferences menu in a non-GNOME DE.

Sorry I can't sponsor; bug filing hits the limit of this medieval
history grad student's computer skills. -_-;

[Bug 1290697] [NEW] Font rendering is broken

[Bug 1290697] Re: Font rendering is broken

2014-03-11 Thread Aibara Iduas
Tthe colors of the pixels to the side of the characters in the
screenshot on the right are off, causing them to be blurrier and more
'shimmering'.

I only found this in gedit, nothing else. I was using a live image, and
just tried it again with today's... but now the rendering seems just
fine. I'll test it some more in the coming days to see if the problem
comes back.

[Bug 1290677] [NEW] Multiple Tomboy indicators appear

2014-03-10 Thread Aibara Iduas
Public bug reported:

In Trusty, multiple Tomboy indicator icons randomly appear. They seem to
each be connected to a separate tomboy.exe instance. I've seen up to
four before I began to close them. I have no clue what causes them to

[Bug 1290691] [NEW] gThumb has no window decorations

2014-03-10 Thread Aibara Iduas
Public bug reported:

Version 3.3.1 of gThumb (the one currently packaged for Trusty) uses the
new GNOME header bars. It does this in every environment, meaning that
when using Unity there are no window decorations save when the window is
maximized, and then there are two window titles. This is inconsistent
with any other application in Ubuntu.

There is some talk from the developers about adding an option for
desktop environments other than GNOME shell (see:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=724238), but this certainly
will not be ready for Trusty's release.

This version should therefore be patched if possible (as has been done
with Nautilus/Files and a few other programs I believe) or, more simply,
the version used in Saucy (3.0.2) should be used as default. The later
option would make sense considering Trusty is an LTS release.

Thanks.

[Bug 1256162] [NEW] If certain programs are opened unfocused, text is a lighter shade

2013-11-28 Thread Aibara Iduas
Public bug reported:

When certain programs are opened unfocused, the text displayed is a
lighter (incorrect and harder to see, shade of grey. I've found this to
happen in gedit and Synaptic, at the very least.

To reproduce with gedit, open a text file (say, by double clicking on
it), but make sure another window is focused by the time it starts up.

The result is that the text displayed by gedit will be a lighter, harder
to see, shade of gray. If the window is dragged around the text actually
turns darker (i.e. the proper shade of gray) temporarily, then reverts
back to the lighter color once the dragging is complete.

If the file opens in gedit while it is focused, the text is darker (i.e.
the proper shade) and everything is fine.

See attachments for the text color comparison.

This is certainly a theme or unico theme engine problem (not sure which
though), since it occurs with at least two programs when using the
Ambiance and Radiance themes, while it does not occur using the high
contrast or Awaita themes.

I'm using Ubuntu 13.10, though the problem has been there for a quite
some time, definitely since 12.04, but maybe longer; I just couldn't
figure out how to reproduce it until now.

[Bug 1018718] Re: columns width redrawn by multiple events

2013-10-19 Thread Aibara Iduas
Ah, I see Alberto.

I've narrowed down the problem down to two lines in the Ambiance theme.
If lines 66 and 68 in /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-3.0/gtk-widgets.css
are deleted, the columns are perfectly stable. The two lines are:

-unico-focus-border-color: alpha (@selected_bg_color, 0.5);
-unico-focus-fill-color: alpha (@selected_bg_color, 0.1);

But that has a nasty side effect, namely an ugly pink color that appears
when selecting tabs and files in list view. No clue if this is just a
problem with Ambiance and Radiance or the Unico theme engine. I really
don't know much about themes (got this through trial and error).

[Bug 1172573] [NEW] Nautilus 3.6 list view adjusts size of columns frequently

2013-04-24 Thread Aibara Iduas
Public bug reported:

When viewing files in list view with Nautilus, the columns change their width
back and forth when:
-switching to another window
-switching back to Nautilus
-moving the Nautilus window
-Alt-tabing between windows
-right clicking to bring up the context menu
-clicking on the global menu
-clicking on any of the options buttons
-and more!

Basically doing anything but clicking on a folder or file will cause the
columns to resize themselves. But this does not happen all the time...
it seems like only when viewing a directory with a substantial number of
files and folders, though I have folders with hundreds of images in them
and it does not happen, so it's tough to pin down when it occurs. It
does happen when viewing my home directory with hidden files shown.

Changing the theme to Highcontrast seems to fix things, but that's not
very pretty.

A similar bug was reported for 12.10, which was marked solved:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1073913

[Bug 1037164] Re: Clicking on snapped windows in a different workspace produce unexpected results

2012-10-18 Thread Aibara Iduas
Same problem that's been around since Natty; this is also still broken
for non-snapped windows that rest on certain borders. E.g. if a window
rests on the bottom border of the lower left workspace, then that window
is called via the launcher in the upper left workspace, it moves into
the upper left's workspace instead of shifting the view to the lower
one.

Uh, do we still complain about it here for Precise? I guess this isn't

[Bug 1054776] Re: Don't include remote searches in the home lens

2012-09-22 Thread Aibara Iduas
In addition to the privacy concerns stated above, I'd just like to add
that this causes a *huge* hit to usability. There is already a lot of
information presented in the dash home, and adding a stream of
information that is probably totally irrelevant to a given search goes
against the whole point of having the dash - namely to find stuff more
easily.

Example: I keep a journal on my computer. It is a file named
journal.odt. If I type in journal, I just want to see that journal (and
maybe some relevant programs, like Gnome Activity Journal). I don't want
to see icons for: Hand - Deadroom Journal [2008] $7.77; Taylor Dupree
- Journal [2011] $2.79; Bridge 61 - Journal [2006] $8.99; Jully -
Journal Intime [2008] $9.99; Arabica - Journal [2010] $9.99; Dday
One - Journal [2011] $2.79... and that's just one line.

That this turns every desktop search in to an advertisement threatens to
make Ubuntu seem like adware itself, as vexorian mentions above, but
even if one finds these options useful, the amount of clutter added to
the dash home is a problem.

Making this a separate lens would solve both these issues to an extent,
since if the user went specifically to the shopping lens there would at
least be the assumption that the user wants to actually buy something.
Integrating it with the home lens makes no sense since the vast, vast
majority of times a user types something into the dash they don't want
to buy something new, but rather want find something that is already on
their computer.

This, coupled with the privacy concerns mentioned above (which are
really, really serious), ultimately means that even a separate lens
should be an *opt-in* feature - especially considering the vast majority
of users will have no clue how to disable it.

[Bug 1026426] Re: LibreOffice Calc and Draw launcher integration broken

2012-07-26 Thread Aibara Iduas
I've run across a bunch of problems with LibreOffice integration with
the launcher. Sometimes, for instance, a locked icon of an application
won't register when the program is opened, so another (yet identical)
icon will appear. What I reported was the only bug which I could
reproduce consistently. I actually did get the bug with Writer, as Dan
Jared shows above, but it only happened once.

[Bug 1026426] [NEW] LibreOffice Calc and Draw launcher integration broken

2012-07-18 Thread Aibara Iduas
Public bug reported:

LibreOffice Calc and Draw are not coming up on the launcher properly as of a
few weeks ago (can't remember exactly when).

If Calc or Draw is locked to launcher, all is normal.
Opening just Calc or Draw via the dash works as normal too.

However, problems arise if you open a document directly (from the dash
or double clicking in Nautilus) when there is no icon pinned to the
launcher:

Case #1
A white generic Liberoffice icon appears - not the proper application icon
(eg a green one for Calc, a yellow one for Draw). If more documents are opened,
no more wee triangles appear and the icon becomes useless: it cannot be clicked
to switch to any open instance. There is no way to switch to it if the window
is minimized, as now LibreOffice no longer appears in the alt-tab switcher.

Close LibreOffice.
Open a file directly again.

Case #2
Now the proper icon appears - but with an empty hole in between launcher and
icon. If more documents are opened the white triangles appear and alt-tab still
works, but the hole remains. Sometimes the hole is two icons wide.

Close LibreOffice.
Repeat.

Case #1 now reapers, and it will go back and forth ad infinitum.

Note that I don't get this problem with Writer or Impress, which is pretty
werid. I've tried this with LibreOffice 3.5.3.2 and the PPA version (currently
3.5.5.3). I've also tested using lo-menubar and not, but it makes no
difference. I've also tested it on two separate computers using Precise and
purged all of LibreOffice and reinstalled... all to no avail.

Thanks.

[Bug 994754] Re: Xscreensaver locks when it should not

2012-06-29 Thread Aibara Iduas
I managed to figure out a workaround, though I imagine there's a better
solution out there. I looked at what was happening when my lid was
closed and opened in /etc/acpi/lid.sh and found that xscreensaver was
being called upon automatically. I tried to make it simply obey its
config file and not lock, but couldn't figure it out, so I ended up
simply deleting the lines that involved xscreensaver. Now everything
works great: no locking, and if the lid is closed passed the amount of
time which you have set for xscreensaver to start, it'll start normally
(and not lock).

I'm still not sure why xscreensaver is set up to be called automatically
when the lid is closed or why it ignores it's settings and locks when
the lid is opened. I also don't get why on one laptop (Thinkpad T60) the
problem always occurs, whereas on another (Vaio SZ-450) it happens in
spurts (sometimes it locks every time, sometimes not at all), despite
them having the same lid.sh file and both using Ubuntu 12.04.

[Bug 992646] Re: LightDM does not use users wallpaper if not selected from default

2012-06-16 Thread Aibara Iduas
LightDM will display the user added wallpaper (at any resolution I
believe) - but only if it has permission to read the file (i.e. the
relevant folders and file both allow Others read access). I had
problems with this since even though my Pictures folder and image were
readable, a subfolder therein was not. While this makes sense, I assume
the default behavior should be more user-friendly: if a user adds a
background image, LightDM will also display it.

I found this behavior both on a computer upgraded from Natty and one
with a fresh Precise install.

[Bug 994754] [NEW] Xscreensaver locks when it should not

2012-05-04 Thread Aibara Iduas
Public bug reported:

I have removed gnome-screensaver and replaced it with xscreensaver, and
am trying to prevent it from locking my screen when my laptop's screen
turns back on or when it wakes up from being suspended. Even though the
Lock Screen After box in xscreensaver's setting is unchecked, the lock
will still pop up and demand a password when I open my lid. The expected
behavior is, of course, to not have that occur.

The system settings have also been set to Do nothing when I close it
(and indeed, gnome-screensaver obeyed these settings just fine when I
was using it). Often after I restart the computer xscreensaver acts as
it should for a while, but eventually the problem will crop back up.
I've noticed no pattern, save that when it does start doing this I can't
seem to make it stop.

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 (though this also occured in 11.10). I'm also not
alone I think, see: http://askubuntu.com/questions/95295/how-to-prevent-
screen-locking-when-lid-is-closed

Thanks!

[Bug 994875] [NEW] If Comix opens maximized bottom of window does not appear

2012-05-04 Thread Aibara Iduas
Public bug reported:

When Comix is opened maximized, the bottom of the screen is cut off and
shows whatever is behind it. It can be fixed by un-maximizing
it/minimizing it and then maximizing it again. No error occurs when
Comix is started un-maximized - the entire window shows as normal.

Please see the attached screenshot, where the bottom of the window
(including the scrollbars and the statusbar) is cut off and shows the
desktop.

I'm using Comix 4.0.4 in Ubuntu 12.04. This problem did not occur to me

[Bug 834248] Re: [With Patch]: Non-maximized windows which sit on the bottom edge of the lower workspaces shift downwards when called from an upper workspace.

2012-04-26 Thread Aibara Iduas
I've just upgraded to Precise, and the problem is still there. The
behavior seems slightly different now, in that when the windows are
snapped to the side, the issue doesn't occur (or at least I haven't
noticed it yet - it was consistent in Oneiric). When a normal un-
maximized window is sitting on the bottom of a lower workspace and is
called by clicking the launcher while in an upper one, however, it is
still moved and sits between the workspaces. Now it seems not just to
move down into the top a bit, but move almost entirely into the upper
workspace, which is even worse.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/940686). Regardless, it is indeed
a bug and only one window should be brought forward.

[Bug 944558] [NEW] Text in Unity panel, HUD, dash corrupted

2012-03-01 Thread Aibara Iduas
Public bug reported:

The fonts in the Unity panel, the dash, and the HUD are corrupted. This
seems to only affect certain the text in certain places.

For instance, in the dash the F in Filter has a blue line on it (see
first screenshot). Using the HUD, the first letter typed is always
corrupted, generally with some vertical orange lines. The same letter
will not be corrupted if it is not the first characer typed (see second
screenshot). Finally, the first letter of a title in the panel is
corrupted (blue or white lines), even if it is normal on the title bar
of a window that is not maximized (see third screenshot).

Text in other places seems unaffected.

Thanks.
