[Bug 1687246] Re: GNOME Shell should support fractional (non-integer) Hi-DPI scaling

2018-11-28 Thread Omer Akram
I think 100,200 and 300% were the easiest to get done. The real issue is
with fractional scaling, which KDE does better than others currently and
then of course it depends how your GUI toolkit plays with fractional
scaling.

[Bug 1687246] Re: GNOME Shell should support fractional (non-integer) Hi-DPI scaling

2018-09-29 Thread Omer Akram
I may add that I believe we probably need more scaling steps than 125,
150, 175 and 200. On my Thinkpad X1C with 14" display and 1080p
resolutions 125% is still "too small" and 150% is too large.

[Bug 1687246] Re: GNOME Shell should support fractional (non-integer) Hi-DPI scaling

2018-09-29 Thread Omer Akram
What is left of this issue to be sorted, is there a way to track
upstream progress on this ? From my testing many apps (non-gnome) get
blurry when fractional scaling is enabled. So is that something those
app developers will have to fix in their apps ?

[Bug 1723117] Re: Desktop icons goes under the Dock, if the Dock is set to auto-hide.

2018-04-03 Thread Omer Akram
I think people hide the launcher because they want their apps to take
most of the screen real estate, only a few people would auto-hide to
have the extended desktop space.

This physically looks ugly and is something that should be fixed before
release, IMO.

[Bug 1753172] [NEW] locale settings for Pakistan should be en_PK.UTF-8 not ur_PK

2018-03-03 Thread Omer Akram
Public bug reported:

Urdu is the official language in Pakistan but people don't use their
computers OR mobile phones in Urdu. When installing Ubuntu with country
set to Pakistan during installation, system date ends up being in Urdu
afterwards (even though I selected English as language). I am not sure
when that changed but whoever changed it made a mistake (probably in
debian). We need to fix that.

I am willing to create a patch if someone tells me the right package to
fix that in. Lets get this sorted before 18.04

[Bug 1666462] [NEW] Should force scan wifi devices when indicator is opened

2017-02-21 Thread Omer Akram
Public bug reported:

In Unity7 network-manager indicator is a bit dumb, that is it refreshes
after hard-coded intervals. This works in some cases but for cases where
you just created a hotspot and want to connect to it, you have to turn
off wifi and turn it back on again, problematic, eh ?

Lets fix that with unity8, whenever we open the indicator please refresh
the list of wifi networks for a few seconds(5?) and also for the
duration of when the indicator is kept open we should refresh wifi
network more frequently then we generally do.

[Bug 1630337] Re: Need DBus API to get current co-ordinates of the Pointer

2016-10-10 Thread Omer Akram
There are a few points that I would like to point here that I and
mzanetti discussed.

Mike wanted for us to talk to the unity8 proxy object to get details of
the pointer co-ordinates to screen orientation but there are a few
reasons that I believe we should not be going by that path.

1. The tool i.e. Autopilot should only rely on APIs and not on internal details
of the unity8 server.
2. We don't want to restart unity8 to enable testability for autopilot to work.
Restarting unity8 would only make sense if we were testing unity8 itself.

[Bug 1627108] Re: X1Carbon comes to a crawl during high CPU usage tasks

2016-10-07 Thread Omer Akram
As notified on on IRC, that is a good kernel.

The issue is easy to reproduce on an X1 Carbon just run `stress -c 4`
and within a few seconds mouse starts to lag and everything becomes
slow.

** Description changed:

My X1Carbon becomes quite laggy, the cursor hangs for a few seconds and
then resumes while my system is compiling some code, or lets says
PyCharm is indexing things or Android Studio is compiling some code. I
was using 4.4 on Xenial a few days ago and everything was working just
fine. Installed Yakkety and this issue happens.
+
+ TEST CASE:
+ `stress -c 4` <-- that results in system slowness.
+

I will downgrade the kernel and see if that mitigates the issue.

[Bug 1627108] Re: X1Carbon comes to a crawl during high CPU usage tasks

2016-10-05 Thread Omer Akram
Ok, that is a good kernel. My test is `stress -c 4` and it works fine
i.e. system performance does not degrade.

[Bug 1630337] Re: Need DBus API to get current co-ordinates of the Pointer

2016-10-05 Thread Omer Akram
I am attaching a sample code that works under X, to get that to work
under Mir, we only need to get cursor co-ordinates from unity8, then we
only need to update get_cursor_position() method.

it requires python-evdev, python3-autopilot and python3-xlib installed.

[Bug 1630337] [NEW] Need DBus API to get current co-ordinates of the Pointer

2016-10-04 Thread Omer Akram
Public bug reported:

The autopilot tool(using evdev) moves the mouse cursor on screen
relative to its current position. This works fine in X11 as there are
ways to easily get the co-ordinates of the cursor, but under Mir that
does not work as we have no way to get the pointer' co-ordinates.

We need this API to port autopilot to work under Mir based desktop.

[Bug 1627108] [NEW] X1Carbon comes to a crawl during high CPU usage tasks

2016-09-23 Thread Omer Akram
Public bug reported:

My X1Carbon becomes quite laggy, the cursor hangs for a few seconds and
then resumes while my system is compiling some code, or lets says
PyCharm is indexing things or Android Studio is compiling some code. I
was using 4.4 on Xenial a few days ago and everything was working just
fine. Installed Yakkety and this issue happens.

I will downgrade the kernel and see if that mitigates the issue.

My soundcloud app is also affected by this one, also right now I have no
way of knowing if the track is being buffered or not since once the
playback state turns to 1 it never changes to 0, that's probably because
our backend does not have the buffering signals.

[Bug 1546756] Re: scale factor is broken

"oh ok, not a bug then but rather a known gtk limitation, their scaling
factor is an int..."

Can you please tell if its technically fixable ? If so I would like to
work on it, given I can get some help from someone. Also can you please
point me in the right direction on who I should be talking to ?

Thanks!

[Bug 1553797] Re: Provide a way to Update AppArmor rules for click tests only once

2016-03-11 Thread Omer Akram
So I tried my patch and made relevant changes to our test suite (lp
:ubuntu-system-tests) and it does seem to be working fine.

My previous comment came as I had inspecting that aa-clickhook was
called after temporary debs were installed in /tmp/adt-run.
directory. and this code[1], which added each directory path to the
click-ap.rules file. Since the above patch is working, we can blame my
understand of aa-clickhook here to be the issue.

Do you have comments about the diff ?

[Bug 1553797] Re: Provide a way to Update AppArmor rules for click tests only once

2016-03-10 Thread Omer Akram
I have attached a script based on your proposal.

I am not sure though if we can consider this the solution. The problem
is that we want to run this script after the debs are installed either
to the temp location or system location.

Need some more brainstorming ;)

[Bug 1553797] [NEW] [Enhancement] Provide a way to Update AppArmor rules for click tests only once

2016-03-06 Thread Omer Akram
Public bug reported:

We use autopkgtest in ubuntu-system-tests project to run those tests on
the touch device. While developing the tests, it becomes a bit of a
challenge to run the tests as it takes a few moment to update AppArmor
rules for click.

As part of profiling for ubuntu-system-tests, we found it takes more
than a minute each time to update AppArmor rules. So we probably need
some kind of parameter to adt-run to not delete the /var/cache/apparmor
/click-ap.rules file after running tests.

[Bug 1442728] Re: Chromium fullscreen should be unredirected by default

To add a little, this also potentially fixes a system crash where
exiting fullscreen in chrome/chromium results in unity hanging
completely, where I have to restart session from a tty.

This issue is no longer happening since yesterday after I adding google-
chrome to the setting.

[Bug 1550675] [NEW] Please add chromium-browser(and google-chrome) in undirect fullscreen windows settings

2016-02-27 Thread Omer Akram
Public bug reported:

Playing netflix is not a great experience in Chrome, whenever a
notification appears over fullscreen videos, screens starts tearing.
Adding google-chrome class to undirect fullscreen windows fixes that.
Please apply this diff and lets plan for an SRU of this. 14.04 is there
to stay for a long time and we have got to fix this.

Yep, I had figured that. I believe that is something for Ubuntu to fix.
As right now its either use 4K display or a 768p for Ubuntu to look good

[Bug 1546756] Re: scale factor is broken

2016-02-23 Thread Omer Akram
Widgets only scale if the scale-factor is set to 2 -- which makes
everything look extremely big on a 1080p display. So I set my scale
factor to 1.5, that results in unity and text to scale well but all GTK
widgets stay small.

[Bug 1449686] [NEW] Unity8 crashes while switching from dialer-app

2015-04-28 Thread Omer Akram
Public bug reported:

dialer-app was hanged when that happened but the hang is related to
history-service.

IAhmad saw a crash while switching from an app to the dash. We are not
able to reproduce that however after talking to dandrader he says the
logs from errors.ubuntu.com gives "some clues", linking that here.

[Bug 1351177] Re: Suggestions improvements

2015-04-23 Thread Omer Akram
While testing the silo I am having hard time understanding what this bug
really fixes. I have looked at the design doc as well but was not able
to find what I was looking for.
