[Bug 872711] Re: Kernel does not report some USB printers correctly, making them not being detected by CUPS
A bit more contextual information... I have an old laser printer connected via a usb to parallel cable. I have tried reconfiguring the printer, and it seems to find one, but any attempt to write to it hangs with a "printer not connected" message. lsusb finds the parallel cable just fine. I also have a Canon iP4500 inkjet. It connects and prints OK, but I tried to use "ink" today to read the ink levels, and this hangs. The error message from "ink" indicates it is looking for the old url /dev/usb/lp0. All this used to work in Natty. Thus it would appear the the changes in Oneiric introduced the regressions. [Bug 427653] Re: cups fails on usb-parallel printer
re Daniel's comments: Under Intrepid my machine used to get the same message from lsusb...it listed the "Prolific..." string as you indicated. When I upgraded to Karmic that disappeared. There is no listing identifying the Prolific chip specifically like this at all. As I understand it this ID would be "downstream" of the print driver, making the choice of driver irrelevant until cleared. Under Intrepid recognition of the printer wasn't reliable. I sometimes had to reboot, or unplug / replug the usb connection or turn the printer off and back on to get the computer to realize it was there. Push the threshold a bit and you get the behaviour I'm seeing now. I wouldn't think this would be a software problem, but the effort on Karmic involved speeding it up. That could have introduced faster timing for handshaking, and the older Prolific chips became marginal or simply too slow. A guess. The following should be taken as coming from someone who has used computers for a long time, but is not familiar with CUPS at the detail level involved here: re the failure after one print: this is a wild shot on my part, but I just had a similar problem with Open Office spreadsheet. It was resolved by removing the old configuration directory (which apparently contained a corrupted file) and letting OO generate a new one. Is it possible there is a similar problem in, say, a spool directory for you? By way of possible clues: does the lockup clear if you turn the printer off and restart it? If so that suggests a handshake signal isn't making it through or is not being processed to clear the print status. I've had this happen, for example, if an end-of-page isn't sent to the printer when the job is complete. The computer "thinks" the job is done, but the printer is waiting for the "Tha's All Folks" signal to tidy up. Adding the EOP automatically is usually set as an option in the printer (driver) config, sometimes in an editor config. re Geoff's comment: having trouble with networked printers, in the context of the flaky Prolific recognition, suggests the hardware recognition problem may be more generic than just the Prolific chip. Whatever it is something changed in the jump from Intrepid to karmic in this area. the "fault" is persistent and reproducible. Hope this is helpful, and not ridiculous in context. [Bug 464048] Re: Ooo 3.1 Spreadsheet Crashes on First Open After Boot
Hi Chris, and thanks for responding. Quickly too! I took your suggestion and it appears to have cleared the problem. I checked by invoking the spreadsheet after renaming the directory, and again after rebooting. Both invocations worked fine. It would appear there are some trivial side effects, such as losing the "Recent files" list, but clearing the original problem is welcome. As an interesting side note for other readers: when I found the .openoffice.org directory it had a companion called .openoffice.org2. I suspect this was a remnant of OO 3.0, which I was using with Intrepid Ibex before upgrading. I renamed openoffice.org to clear the problem, and the program generated a new one. All three were there when I looked after rebooting. I removed the two redundant ones. As a newbie I'm not sure how to change status of the bug, but I would consider the problem resolved. Thanks for the help, Chris. Knowledge and familiarity go a long way! Hope I can do the same for someone else soon. [Bug 464048] [NEW] Ooo 3.1 Spreadsheet Crashes on First Open After Boot
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org This is the edition of Ooo 3.1 that was bundled with Ubuntu karmic final beta. Ubuntu has been updated as of today, presumably to the final release. The problem is on the first load of the spreadsheet after a boot. The program reports an unexpected error relating to Untitled-1 and crashes. If I call it again it goes into the recovery screen and will successfully recover Untitled -1. At that point the spreadsheet opens but the window is about 2 cm below the top, not it's normal position. If I click on the top bar to move it or on the X in the upper right to close it the top bar turns clear/white, and normal control becomes iffy at best. However, I can still use the File / Exit option to close the sheet. If I then open it again everything works normally. Subsequent calls also work normally until the machine is rebooted. It appears that the spreadsheet loader or something related to Untitled-1 is corrupted. I have had several crashes on the system, but nothing I can remember specifically enough to relate to this problem. The editor works fine. Any suggestions as to how I might repair the system? I could re-install it, of course, but that is a fairly major task if it isn't necessary or the simplest / easiest way. Any information that might help me understand the structure or general design would be helpful in the long run. Thanks for any consideration. [Bug 427653] Re: cups fails on usb-parallel printer
Newbie to launchpad...Alan I'm having the same problem. The printer ran under 9.04, but was a bit "flaky" and had to be teased sometimes. When I installed 9.10 final beta the printer quit. I think the problem is related to the PL-2305 not being recognized, as the command lsusb no longer lists it. I can reboot or unplug/replug and the result is the same. I tried the sudo rmmod usblp as suggested. It returned this message ERROR: Module usblp does not exist in /proc/modules Hope this helps.
