[Bug 382056] Re: Windows moved to wrong workspace after suspend/resume

2017-11-02 Thread Alan Jackson
I recently migrated from an old System 76 desktop machine running 16.04
with two heads and old monitors to a new System 76 desktop system
running 16.04 and a pair of new Dell monitors. The biggest change is
that the monitors are now hooked up via HDMI. As soon as I made this
change, trouble started. Every morning when I unlock the screens, all of
my windows are now living on the left screen for workspace one. So the
windows move off monitor two, and they move off other workspaces to all
congregate on one monitor and one workspace. I have never experienced
this before my system change - which was all just hardware.

[Bug 1638778] [NEW] Wacom touch screen on lenovo X201t stopped working after upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04

2016-11-02 Thread Alan Jackson
Public bug reported:

I recently changed from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04. I re-installed from
scratch as I was moving from 32bit to 64bit.

My lenovo x201 tablet's touch screen and stylus did work fine with 32bit
14.04.

Now the touch screen is not even recognised.

It does not show up in System Settings > Wacom Tablet

Running:
xsetwacom --list devices

returns nothing.

sudo lshw | grep wacom

returns nothing.

xinput returns:

Spoke too soon, ttyscroll=0 only improved things, it stills fails with
regularity.

Kiwi, you're brilliant! set ttyscroll=0 worked for me, and I don't see any of
the other symptoms noted in the duplicate.
I should mention I'm running Nvidia on 10.04 with twin screens. When I was
running kubuntu I saw this problem in Claws, so I switched to Gnome, and it
cleared up everywhere except for gvim.

[Bug 568492] Re: Fonts corrupted on Openoffice menus and Lotus Notes 8.5 with nvidia, compiz, twinview and subpixel smoothing.

2011-07-24 Thread Alan Jackson
I run Nvidia, ubuntu 10.04, and twinview. I originally saw this under
kubuntu when I upgraded in Claws. I quickly switched to Gnome which
fixed that problem, but then I saw it in gvim - not always, but most of
the time. I haven't had any problem with OpenOffice. I fixed it by set
ttyscroll=0 in my .vimrc, which says do a redraw when you scroll.

[Bug 505452] Re: eeepc_laptop module not loading on kernel 2.6.32

2011-03-12 Thread Alan Jackson
Just asking for some clarification. This is marked as fixed, but that is
not actually true for the kernel in the stable Lucid branch, but
requires going to a newer kernel. I only raise this because I had such a
wonderful experience on my 1005HA with Karmic, where everything just
worked, and I worry about presenting a less than optimum experience to
new Ubuntu users. Are there plans to backport the fix so that Lucid
works out of the box?

I haven't had a crash in quite some time. Of course it tended to be once or
twice a month so it may take awhile. I'm now running 185.18.36 on Karmic.

I recently added a second head, and it seems to be performing fine.

[Bug 502417] [NEW] initramfs pointing to wrong kernel version

2010-01-02 Thread Alan Jackson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

I just did a clean install of Karmic onto a system with partitions for
Intrepid and Jaunty on it. The install was amazingly smooth (good work
guys), including my manual disk reformatting and such, until the very
end when it hiccupped about initramfs. I went ahead and rebooted, and it
booted up fine, but hung during the install of updated packages.
Rebooted again, looks fine, but now I cannot get apt-get to work.

$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
Setting up initramrs-tools (0.92bubuntu53) ...
update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)

Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
update-initramfs: generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-12-generic
Cannot find /lib/modules/2.6.17-12-generic
update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-12-generic
dpkg: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Now of course it can't find that.
$ ls /lib/modules
2.6.31-14-generic

This is a real bummer since apt-get is broken...

[Bug 502417] Re: initramfs pointing to wrong kernel version

2010-01-02 Thread Alan Jackson
Okay, I went back and did a new install, and have the same problems. At the end
of the install process, an error pops up :
An error occurred while removing packages:

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

The following packages are in a broken state:

This may be due to etc etc etc

So it says packages are broken, but doesn't say which ones.
/var/log/syslog looked fine, of course that was after reboot. apt-get is
still broken, so I have a near useless install...

[Bug 502417] Re: initramfs pointing to wrong kernel version

2010-01-02 Thread Alan Jackson
Found a solution.

I dropped into recovery mode, dropped into root, and did :

touch /boot/initrd.img-2.6.17-12-generic
mkdir /lib/modules/2.6.17-12-generic

and then ran dpkg --configure -a

and it all cleared up.

Part of the problem may have been that my /boot partition had gotten
very full over the years.

[Bug 315891] [NEW] kde system monitor displays negative CPU % after running for a few days

2009-01-10 Thread Alan Jackson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ksysguard

Running kubuntu intrepid on an AMD64 machine (but in 32 bit mode).
KDE System Monitor version 4, KDE 4.1.3
After a day or sometimes several, the text bar at the bottom gets garbage for
the stats. Right now it says my CPU usage is -76.844% and my memory usage is

[Bug 299381] Re: importing matplotlib gives warning

2008-12-15 Thread Alan Jackson
I installed matplotlib a few weeks ago into a fresh Intrepid install (I
always do a fresh install instead of an update), and I don't see the
reported issue. It could be I'm not loading some other python packages.
I also run kubuntu instead of stock ubuntu.

[Bug 216480] Re: wine output error

2008-04-13 Thread Alan Jackson
It seems to be caused by kernel 2.6.24-16, if you boot into 2.6.24-15
you don't get the errors but you do with the newer kernel so my guess is
the problem lies with the kernel rather than wine. In this case wine is
just showing a problem.

[Bug 70040] DVD/CD RW mistakingly being assigned to /dev/dvdrw /dev/cdrw

2006-11-03 Thread Alan Jackson
Public bug reported:

Edgy - udev 093-0ubuntu18

On my system I have a CD/DVD drive (/dev/hdc) and a CDRW/DVDRW
(/dev/hdd).

Udev incorrectly sets /dev/dvd and /dev/cdrom to /dev/hdd, which is
understandable as both devices say they can play CDs and DVDs.

Workaround:

I have made a change to /etc/udev/rules.d/60-symlinks.rules that works
on my system but would probably fail if you just had a CD/DVD RW.

My change was this:
ENV{ID_CDROM_DVD}==?*, ENV{ID_CDROM_DVD_R}!=?*, SYMLINK+=dvd
ENV{ID_CDROM}==?*, ENV{ID_CDROM_CD_RW}!=?*, SYMLINK+=cdrom

Where before the lines read:
ENV{ID_CDROM_DVD}==?*,SYMLINK+=dvd
ENV{ID_CDROM}==?*,SYMLINK+=cdrom

I've found out why changes aren't being made when you add/edit/delete
entries. The .local directory and it's sub directory are all owned by
root with a mask or rwx-- so the user can not make amendments. I
changed ownership to my username and I can make changes now.

[Bug 63144] Clicking on the double size button crashes XMMS
