I can't just remove mentioned packages with apt-get - quite some packages depend on them nautilus including. To compile 8.28.8 on 2.6.20 I had to copy asm/unistd.h from older kernel and replace in firegl_public.c linux/config.h with linux/utsrelease.h. Now I have 3daccel, but only with X 7.1 (all xserver-xorg packages are holded). This is a dirty hack, but I works for me. Since 8.28.8 doesn't work with Xorg 7.2 i had to downgrade it to 7.1 in order to use fglrx. Public bug reported: After update on 8.34.8 driver for my ATI Radeon X700 (m26) i can not start Xorg any more. The system freezes and show no reaction on anything. Only thing I can do is cold reset. I had the same problem if I installed 8.34.8 in Edgy. However, with Edgy fglrx driver(8.28.8) i can use 3d accel. It would be nice if you would add an option for old 8.28.8 driver.
