[Bug 756928] Re: no opportunity to cancel when using ubuntu-bug -w

2020-05-05 Thread Alex Ruddick
Sorry, I didn't mean to come off so rude. Anyway, I looked into things
and it's not fixable because `apport-bug -w` actually uses xprops which
will return on any mouse press.

[Bug 570033] Re: Session indicator should go red to indicate restart required at end of driver installation

2011-04-10 Thread Alex Ruddick
As an additional concern, whatever method is used should be smart enough
to determine if a restart is actually required. Using the Natty Beta1
LiveCD today, I installed my wireless drivers, then restarted X. The
session indicator tells me I should restart, but the drivers are working
fine.

[Bug 756927] [NEW] Ubuntu classic: date-time applet does not update when time has changed

2011-04-10 Thread Alex Ruddick
Public bug reported:

Running on the 11.04 Beta1 liveCD.

The time displayed was incorrect, so I updated the timezone.

[Clock] - Time Date Settings
[pick new location]
[close]

The displayed time does not change. If I select the option to display
other time zones, (clock tab - time in other locations), my time
displays in this list correctly. To display correctly in the panel
requires a login/logout or reloading of the indicator applet.

I see no changes to the Natty version. My patch still applies cleanly.

[Bug 602767] Re: exe thumbnailer eats all memory while thumbnailing large files

2011-03-21 Thread Alex Ruddick
Oops - either LP didn't send me a bug mail or I missed it.

I think there might be a better workaround.

1) When memory is low, don't spawn a parallel thumbnail process for every
executable in the folder -- do them one at a time instead. This probably
accounts for most of the cases of deadlock.
2) Have the thumbnailer script determine how many other instances of itself are
running, and if their total memory is too high wait until one finishes. Ideally
this would happen in some sort of intelligent order, but that probably requires
code in Nautilus.

This would probably be a welcome improvement, but I think can be
considered separately. My problem is with large files - one at a time
or parallel, they still hose the system.

 3) If even one at a time is too many (eg multi-gigabyte file), then
blacklist it. Rather than 100 mb I would set this at something dynamic
like 1/2 the system ram.

I didn't update my description of the patch when I posted a new one. It
now reads the nautilus thumbnail limit from gconf and respects that.

Should I try to upstream? Change the patch? I'd like to get this into
Natty so I don't have to keep a local diff lying around.

[Bug 602767] Re: exe thumbnailer eats all memory while thumbnailing large files

2011-03-06 Thread Alex Ruddick
I ran into this again today a few times, and it pissed me off enough to
create a workaround. Attached is a patch intended for /usr/bin/gnome-
exe-thumbnailer.

It prevents wrestool from being called on files above a certain size
(hardcoded as 100MB). This solved the issue for me, although a more
general solution would be preferred.

[Bug 291760] Re: network-manager roams to (none) ((none)) - background scanning

This blog post suggests that the problem has been addressed somewhat upstream:

Sure enough, using the networkmanager daily PPA (https://launchpad.net

[Bug 340162] Re: [packaging] Menu item is not removed on uninstall

2009-03-10 Thread Alex Ruddick
The package manager certainly shouldn't be removing files that it
doesn't own, from users home directories.

Why not, if the files are useless? They are only used for that package.
Perhaps this is a job for computer-janitor?

Here is a relevant alacarte bug I filed.

[Bug 340285] Re: Alacarte should avoid retaining unneeded files in ~/.local/share/applications

2009-03-10 Thread Alex Ruddick
Well, as I said I've never done this before so here goes nothing.

I've tried to attach a patch that applies to MenuEditor.py. I started
from alacarte-0.11.9 obtained from apt-get source alacarte.

The patch contains a function checkDuplicate(item) that checks whether
the current item already exists system-wide. I imagined it being called
when a .desktop file in ~/.local was going to be edited. If the local
file to be written was the same as the system version, the local version
should be deleted.

[Bug 340140] [NEW] No window manager on login

2009-03-09 Thread Alex Ruddick
Public bug reported:

This is a regression; everything worked fine until the last few days, with
metacity as default although I have compiz installed.
I'm running GNOME alongside KDE4 on Jaunty up-to-date as of today, with the
nVidia driver.
When I login to GNOME, there are no window decorations drawn. ATo get them
back, one of two things works:
(1) System Prefs Appearance Visual Effects. Setting them to Extra
launches Compiz as expected. This setting does not appear to persist, though.
(2) Running compiz or metacity in a terminal.

[Bug 340153] [NEW] Logout window resizes poorly with alternative fonts.

2009-03-09 Thread Alex Ruddick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I'm using a different font than the default (Rufscript), which has apparently
slightly different spacing. This causes the logout confirmation dialog to wrap
to 3 lines for some numbers. Two issues here:
(1)In compiz (not metacity) the window visually breaks. Screenshot attached.
(2)The dialog box goes from 2 to 3 lines every couple of seconds, depending on
the number. For instance, 60 is 2 lines, but 59 is three. There's plenty of
space in the box for an extra pixel, if that.

[Bug 340162] Re: [packaging] Menu item is not removed on uninstall

Apparently the problem is alacarte. I can get the new profile to have
the leftover file if I touch the menu item in alacarte (i.e. unheck and
check it). I'll file a bug for that, I guess.

In any case, it would still make sense for the package to remove the
file in ~/.local/share/applications. Not sure if this affects other
packages.

[Bug 340285] [NEW] Alacarte should avoid retaining unneeded files in ~/.local/share/applications

2009-03-09 Thread Alex Ruddick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alacarte

I ran into some unexpected behaviour when uninstalling a package, reported as a
bug here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usb-creator/+bug/340162

The extra .desktop file created by Alacarte was left behind in
~/.local/share/applications. I realize that Alacarte cannot know when the
package is removed that that file should be deleted.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alacarte/+bug/55853

However, Alacarte /can/ somtimes realize when the ~/.local copy is no
longer needed. For me a common action is checking/unchecking items to
show/hide them in the menus. When unchecked, alacarte creates the local
copy to override the system one and hide the application. This can lead
to the unexpected behaviour that #33853 mentioned, but it should be the
package manager's job to get rid of the old file. When the item is
rechecked, however, the local copy is no longer needed. If alacarte
were smart about this, it would realize that the local copy is now
identical to the system one, and delete the local copy. (This could
happen with other modifications, too, but seems less likely).

I've never written a patch before, and only know just enough Python to be
dangerous, but I'm going to take a look at the source.

[Bug 336861] Re: Cannot launch any programs

2009-03-07 Thread Alex Ruddick
Like Chris, I originally installed Ubuntu, then installed kubuntu-
desktop. However, I've kept the gnome packages around, and have removed
some of the KDE ones (kubuntu-desktop is no longer installed, etc). I
also am using the nVidia non-free drivers.

Plasma occasionally freezes for me, but it seems unrelated to the launch
problems. (not concurrent).

I haven't been able to launch Dolphin, which is Qt so the problem
doesn't appear to be limited to GTK+ apps.

This machine has been upgraded from each successive Ubuntu release for
several years, and is now running the latest Jaunty packages. (as of a
day or two ago).

I'm running KDE4 alongside GNOME on Jaunty. When I login to KDE4, I
cannot launch any programs after the ones that are automatically
started. I've tried plasma launchers, the main menu, and Krunner. Each
time the program will give launch feedback (bouncing icon on cursor),
and show a new entry in the system tray. No main window ever shows,
though; and eventually the system tray tab will disappear.

[Bug 329133] [NEW] [Jaunty] Nautilus spawns infinitely

2009-02-13 Thread Alex Ruddick
Public bug reported:

I'm reporting this against gnome-panel because I think it's causing the
bug. It does not occur in KDE4, and killing gnome-panel restarts it.

When I log in, the taskbar pager is quickly filled up with lots of new
nautilus items. No nautilus window ever opens. They keep spawning so
quickly that the taskbar is soon a row of tiny little spacers. New ones
adding cause it to keep shaking (squishing stuff to the left to add
new items). The notification area in my panel also vibrates back and
forth, as if a 3px applet is constantly being added and removed.

Killing gnome-panel will blank the pager, but it fills up again. This
process continually takes up one core of my dual core machine, but it
doesn't seem to leak RAM since the system remains otherwise stable.

[Bug 326436] Re: Intrepid - Jaunty upgrades asks about /etc/login.defs (debconf)

2009-02-11 Thread Alex Ruddick
Nope, it's just a waste of time and possible source of confusion. It
causes upgrades to pause and wait for input, too.

[Bug 326609] Re: No flash in firefox after upgrade from intrepid to jaunty

2009-02-08 Thread Alex Ruddick
This happened to me to. NetworkManager died during the Interpid -
Jaunty upgrade. Flashplugin-nonfree is part of the upgrade. It needs
to connect to adobe.com to download Flash, but cannot do so since NM is
down. A reinstall will correctly download from Adobe.

I think this is only a symptom of another bug which kills NM during the
upgrade.

Sourcepackagename: firefox-3.0 = flashplugin-nonfree

[Bug 197131] Re: Using gksu with Alt-F2 laucher displays wrong icon

2009-01-03 Thread Alex Ruddick
Well, now it doesn't show any icon at all, which is better than the
wrong one. Best case would still be to show the correct icon for the
command after gksu, perhaps with a smaller gksu icon (the badge one) in
the corner.

[Bug 288386] Re: Flash causing static when I mute

2008-12-17 Thread Alex Ruddick
Confirming. I'm running up-to-date Intrepid + backports on a Dell Latitude
D620. Sound Preferences indicated my sound card is HDA Intel STAC92xx, and
I'm using ALSA.
Michiel describes my symptoms.
* Mute from volume applet works fine.
* Mute from laptop keys will produce static while sound is playing, from Flash
or Rhythmbox.

There is a third function you missed: minimizing to the tray.

Perhaps new users don't care, but it's worth mentioning. I kept the
icon for this purpose.

... Perhaps I was unclear. It appears the modified files were a red
herring, since after a complete reinstall F-spot still crashes.

Steps to reproduce for me:
(1) Open F-Spot
(2) Open Preferences window.
(3) Crash
