[Bug 602767] Re: exe thumbnailer eats all memory while thumbnailing large files
Oops - either LP didn't send me a bug mail or I missed it. I think there might be a better workaround. 1) When memory is low, don't spawn a parallel thumbnail process for every executable in the folder -- do them one at a time instead. This probably accounts for most of the cases of deadlock. 2) Have the thumbnailer script determine how many other instances of itself are running, and if their total memory is too high wait until one finishes. Ideally this would happen in some sort of intelligent order, but that probably requires code in Nautilus. This would probably be a welcome improvement, but I think can be considered separately. My problem is with large files - one at a time or parallel, they still hose the system. 3) If even one at a time is too many (eg multi-gigabyte file), then blacklist it. Rather than 100 mb I would set this at something dynamic like 1/2 the system ram. I didn't update my description of the patch when I posted a new one. It now reads the nautilus thumbnail limit from gconf and respects that. Should I try to upstream? Change the patch? I'd like to get this into Natty so I don't have to keep a local diff lying around. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/602767 Title: exe thumbnailer eats all memory while thumbnailing large files -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 291760] Re: network-manager roams to (none) ((none)) - background scanning
This blog post suggests that the problem has been addressed somewhat upstream: http://blogs.gnome.org/dcbw/2010/07/15/not-a-jackass-episode-1/ Sure enough, using the networkmanager daily PPA (https://launchpad.net /~network-manager/+archive/trunk) made the irritating logs go away. I noticed the lack of German, but checked the .desktop file and there were no other languages. I noticed on Lucid, but checked the Maverick package and it was the same file. Well, as I said I've never done this before so here goes nothing. I've tried to attach a patch that applies to MenuEditor.py. I started from alacarte-0.11.9 obtained from apt-get source alacarte. The patch contains a function checkDuplicate(item) that checks whether the current item already exists system-wide. I imagined it being called when a .desktop file in ~/.local was going to be edited. If the local file to be written was the same as the system version, the local version should be deleted. ** Attachment added: Adds a function checkDuplicate http://launchpadlibrarian.net/23740418/patch-MenuEditor -- Alacarte should avoid retaining unneeded files in ~/.local/share/applications https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/340285 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 340285] [NEW] Alacarte should avoid retaining unneeded files in ~/.local/share/applications
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: alacarte I ran into some unexpected behaviour when uninstalling a package, reported as a bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usb-creator/+bug/340162 The extra .desktop file created by Alacarte was left behind in ~/.local/share/applications. I realize that Alacarte cannot know when the package is removed that that file should be deleted. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alacarte/+bug/55853 However, Alacarte /can/ somtimes realize when the ~/.local copy is no longer needed. For me a common action is checking/unchecking items to show/hide them in the menus. When unchecked, alacarte creates the local copy to override the system one and hide the application. This can lead to the unexpected behaviour that #33853 mentioned, but it should be the package manager's job to get rid of the old file. When the item is rechecked, however, the local copy is no longer needed. If alacarte were smart about this, it would realize that the local copy is now identical to the system one, and delete the local copy. (This could happen with other modifications, too, but seems less likely). I've never written a patch before, and only know just enough Python to be dangerous, but I'm going to take a look at the source. ** Affects: alacarte (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Alacarte should avoid retaining unneeded files in ~/.local/share/applications https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/340285 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 336861] Re: Cannot launch any programs
Like Chris, I originally installed Ubuntu, then installed kubuntu- desktop. However, I've kept the gnome packages around, and have removed some of the KDE ones (kubuntu-desktop is no longer installed, etc). I also am using the nVidia non-free drivers. Plasma occasionally freezes for me, but it seems unrelated to the launch problems. (not concurrent). I haven't been able to launch Dolphin, which is Qt so the problem doesn't appear to be limited to GTK+ apps. This machine has been upgraded from each successive Ubuntu release for several years, and is now running the latest Jaunty packages. (as of a day or two ago). [Bug 336861] [NEW] Cannot launch any programs
Public bug reported: I'm running KDE4 alongside GNOME on Jaunty. When I login to KDE4, I cannot launch any programs after the ones that are automatically started. I've tried plasma launchers, the main menu, and Krunner. Each time the program will give launch feedback (bouncing icon on cursor), and show a new entry in the system tray. No main window ever shows, though; and eventually the system tray tab will disappear. I've attached ~./xsession-errors. [Bug 329133] [NEW] [Jaunty] Nautilus spawns infinitely
Public bug reported: I'm reporting this against gnome-panel because I think it's causing the bug. It does not occur in KDE4, and killing gnome-panel restarts it. When I log in, the taskbar pager is quickly filled up with lots of new nautilus items. No nautilus window ever opens. They keep spawning so quickly that the taskbar is soon a row of tiny little spacers. New ones adding cause it to keep shaking (squishing stuff to the left to add new items). The notification area in my panel also vibrates back and forth, as if a 3px applet is constantly being added and removed. Killing gnome-panel will blank the pager, but it fills up again. This process continually takes up one core of my dual core machine, but it doesn't seem to leak RAM since the system remains otherwise stable. nautilus 1.2.25.4-0ubuntu1 gnome-panel1.2.25.90-0ubuntu1 ** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Jaunty] Nautilus spawns infinitely https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/329133 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
