[Bug 1863570] [NEW] Update GameMode to 1.5 stable (includes perf regression fix for Intel iGPUs)

2020-02-17 Thread Alex Smith
Public bug reported:

The current GameMode package version is from an outdated git revision.
Stable version 1.5 was released last month.

Notably, the new version includes changes to avoid causing performance
regressions on Intel integrated GPUs:
https://github.com/FeralInteractive/gamemode/pull/179

It would be great if this could be upgraded in 20.04 LTS so that those
changes are available.

[Bug 1726809] [NEW] Vulkan does not work on nvidia-384 due to incorrect nvidia_icd.json

2017-10-24 Thread Alex Smith
Public bug reported:

The Vulkan nvidia_icd.json included with the nvidia-384 package has the
wrong "library_path" set, meaning that no Vulkan apps can run. For
example, running "vulkaninfo" gives the following:

ERROR: [loader] Code 0 : loader_scanned_icd_add: Attempt to retrieve either
'vkGetInstanceProcAddr' or 'vk_icdGetInstanceProcAddr' from ICD libGL.so.1
failed.
Cannot create Vulkan instance.
/build/vulkan-8TJjRa/vulkan-1.0.61.1+dfsg1/demos/vulkaninfo.c:698: failed with
VK_ERROR_INCOMPATIBLE_DRIVER

Furthermore, none of our (Feral Interactive) Vulkan games are able to
run when this driver package is installed.

The library path is set to "libGL.so.1", however since this package
includes the GLVND version of the NVIDIA driver, that library is not a
valid Vulkan ICD (it is the GLVND dispatch library). The correct ICD
library path when using GLVND is "libGLX_nvidia.so.0" (this is what you
get when you install the driver manually with NVIDIA's installer).

This is seen with nvidia-384_384.90-0ubuntu0.17.04.1_amd64.

The nvidia-384 package from the graphics-drivers PPA (version
384.90-0ubuntu0~gpu17.04.1) does not have this problem. However, as of
today, the version from the main repository seems to be getting
installed as an update in preference to the PPA version, which causes
breakage.

[Bug 1206891] Re: Android low memory handler driver kills processes when there's still free RAM/swap

2013-08-09 Thread Alex Smith
The issue is that CONFIG_ANDROID_LOW_MEMORY_KILLER is enabled. I'm not
sure why this is on in the Ubuntu default kernel configuration as it
implements Android-specific behaviour. I installed the latest upstream
kernel package and the kernel config still has the low memory killer
enabled, so the same issue exists there too.

[Bug 1206891] [NEW] Android low memory handler driver kills processes when there's still free RAM/swap

2013-07-31 Thread Alex Smith
Public bug reported:

When I'm doing something memory intensive such as compiling a large
project I find that I start getting processes killed (mainly Chrome),
despite there still being a large amount of swap free. At first I
thought this was being done by the normal Linux oom-killer, but it's
actually the Android low memory handler driver which is built into the
default Ubuntu kernel configuration. Example of the messages I get in
syslog when a process is killed:

Jul 31 11:04:34 asmith-linux kernel: [84686.869462] select 8851 (chrome), adj
300, size 18339, to kill
Jul 31 11:04:34 asmith-linux kernel: [84686.869479] send sigkill to 8851
(chrome), adj 300, size 18339

When this happens, although main memory is close to full, my swap is
barely utilised at all - I have an 8GB swap partition, but I've yet to
see more than around 1GB of it get used.

Kernel version: Ubuntu 3.8.0-27.40-generic 3.8.13.4

this just happened to me, scary thing was it was after a power failure (i might
have installed some updates, not sure?) and left the computer broken.

serious issue.

[Bug 110585] Re: Compaq Proliant DL360: raid controller should use cpqarray, not sym53c8xx

2007-08-14 Thread Alex Smith
I saw that fix when I was googling around, but that fix went into .18,
and it's fixed on most distros with .18 or newer, so I was mystified as
to why it was happening on Gutsy.

[Bug 110585] Re: Compaq Proliant DL360: raid controller should use cpqarray, not sym53c8xx

2007-08-06 Thread Alex Smith
As a workaround, you can add this to the kernel command line when
booting:

sym53c8xx.blacklist=true

That worked for me on my Compaq Proliant DL360 (G1), after some poking
around in busybox I found that d-i can have modules blacklisted by
adding module.blacklist=true to the command line.

[Bug 116969] update-manager-core should depend on psmisc

2007-05-26 Thread Alex Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager-core

I installed Edgy in a Xen VM using xen-tools on a feisty host. Xen-tools
didn't install psmisc in the VM, so when I tried to upgrade the VM to
feisty using do-release-upgrade, it died because it couldn't find
killall. Installing psmisc fixed the issue

[Bug 98955] Re: logd not running

2007-05-23 Thread Alex Smith
See what I said, it's purposely disabled for a reason. If a process is
using logd for it's stdout, and logd gets stopped, that process will die
with SIGPIPE

[Bug 107766] system-config-printer adds menu item the same as gnome-cups-manager's menu item

2007-04-19 Thread Alex Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: system-config-printer

The system-config-printer tool (installable from Add/Remove Programs)
installs a menu item in System - Administration with the same title as
the menu item provided by gnome-cups-manager. This is confusing, since
you can't see which one is which.

[Bug 98955] Re: logd not running

2007-04-10 Thread Alex Smith
Logd doesn't get started by default or used by default because there is
a bug in it, not just because it isn't started:

25-02-2007 13:43:25 AlexExtreme btw, what is the problem with logd?
25-02-2007 13:44:30 Keybuk kill it, any job with it as stdout ends up dying
mysteriously and silently

[Bug 72058] Re: Documentation about vanished /etc/inittab should be added

2006-11-18 Thread Alex Smith
Here's a patch to add an initctl man page saying that it is deprecated
and has been replaced with the event.d directory. It points the reader
to the getting started document on the Upstart website.

Suggested changelog entry:
 * util/man/inittab.5: new inittab man page mentioning that inittab has been
replaced with /etc/event.d
 * util/Makefile.am (dist_man_MANS): added inittab.5

[Bug 68782] LiveCD does not burn correctly

2006-10-28 Thread Alex Smith
Public bug reported:

I downloaded the desktop i386 ISO, and verified it with md5sums several
times. It also boots fine in qemu. But I have tried burning it to CD-RW
- I've tried it in 3 different machines, with 5 different CDs - and each
time the CD gets burnt incorrectly, i.e. the same sectors seem to be
corrupt on every one I've burnt. If I try to boot it, it just gives me a
load of IDE errors from the kernel.

Any ideas?
