[Bug 193018] Re: SHIFT+ALT != ALT+SHIFT
This (bad) behaviour is (bad) work-around to other bugs. Alt-Shift is the default language/keyboard layout shortcut. Nearly everyone outside of US/Anglo saxon world will expect this keyboard shortcut (including Mark Shuttleworth). Just installed 10.10 and surprised these numerous Alt-Shift bugs have not been resolved. If Alt-Shift is used to switch keyboard layouts (as it is in Windows) then Alt-Shift-Tab (to switch windows in reverse, also standard Windows and Gnome behaviour) no longer works. However, Shift- Alt-Tab and Alt-Shift will work together -- certainly not an intuitive solution. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control-center/+bug/322068 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/compiz/+bug/150702/comments/12 Perhaps someone can go through the possibly 800 bug reports and come up with common use cases, mark them all duplicate and finally solve these issues? [Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts
(me too) confirm Alt-Shift keyboard layout switch incompatible with Alt- Shift-Tab Window switching in reverse in Ubuntu 10.10... This bug is set to Low/Medium priority, but what are the recommended work-arounds? Alt-Shift is an obvious keyboard layout switch because it is default in Windows. Alt-Space is default on Mac OS X (I think) but that is incompatible with Gnome window menus. Various other combinations conflict (like Alt-Gr/Right Alt is nec. for many non-English layouts). This bug (duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/307798) is set to low priority. However, this effects EVERY non-English speaking apt-get user. Issue (in Danish): Efter denne handling, vil 86,0kB yderligere diskplads være brugt. Vil du fortsætte [J/n]? j Afbryder. Issue (in French): Suite à cette action, serait 86,0 Ko d'espace disque supplémentaires seront utilisés. Voulez-vous continuer [O / n]? o Abandon. Translation (in English): Following this action, would 86.0 kB of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue [Y / n]? y Aborting. In other words, the user selected J for Ja (Yes in English), but the expected affirmative input is Y, so apt-get assumes NO, NEJ, NADDA, ABORT, CANCEL, Which is very wrong. Confirmed bug since 2007 and still in Ubuntu 10.10. [Bug 344878] Re: file name to long when creating new file (ecryptfs_lookup: lookup_one_len() returned [-36] on lower_dentry)
The long-filename bug affects me quite often. Though the work around, to just reduce the length of the plaintext filename, usually works ok - albeit annoying. However, I just experienced a case where a long ecryptfs file was copied from one Ext4 device (from within an encrypted Ubuntu 09.10 Private directory) to another Ext4 device (within a TrueCrypt partition), but could not be copied again to a third Ext4 device (within a large encrypted Ubuntu 10.04 home directory). How did the file get written in the first place? I've deleted the encrypted file, do not know the original plain text file name, and could not share details of the file anyway. :( -- file name to long when creating new file (ecryptfs_lookup: lookup_one_len() returned [-36] on lower_dentry) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/344878 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Had some trouble installing vmware-player (hence I am here). Installing via cshieli's repository requires removing vmware-server. Re: [Bug 138723] Re: bluetooth not working on Feisty HP Compaq nw8240
Hi Onkar, I have internal bluetooth. I have installed bluez-gnome and logged out. There is nothing new in the notification area (the keyboard goes lower case, but I've seen that before). Re: [Bug 138723] Re: bluetooth not working on Feisty HP Compaq nw8240
Thanks Onkar, Also check if you have a hardware switch to turn off bluetooth. Often there is only one switch is for both wireless and bluetooth. There is a button above the function keys with blue LED and a wireless logo and on it, something like this ((|)). This button optionally toggled wireless and/or bluetooth (configurable) under Windows. While the LED does not work in Ubuntu (or its dead, but I doubt it) I can certainly connect and disconnect eth1 wireless with a button press. But this does not seem to have an effect on bluetooth. I do not seem to have any indication that bluetooth exists in Nautilus nor the panel. I've just set the SystemPreferencesBluetooth PreferencesAlways display icon, and do see the bluetooth icon, but that's not terribly interesting. $ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM/GMS/910GML Express Processor to DRAM Controller (rev 03) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/PM Express PCI Express Root Port (rev 03) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) PCI Express Port 1 (rev 03) 00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) PCI Express Port 2 (rev 03) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #1 (rev 03) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #2 (rev 03) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #3 (rev 03) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 03) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev d3) 00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03) 00:1e.3 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FBM (ICH6M) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 03) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) IDE Controller (rev 03) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X700 (PCIE) 02:04.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (rev 05) 02:06.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCIxx21/x515 Cardbus Controller 02:06.2 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller 02:06.3 Mass storage controller: Texas Instruments PCIxx21 Integrated FlashMedia Controller 02:06.4 Generic system peripheral [0805]: Texas Instruments PCI6411/6421/6611/6621/7411/7421/7611/7621 Secure Digital Controller 02:06.5 Communication controller: Texas Instruments PCI6411/6421/6611/6621/7411/7421/7611/7621 Smart Card Controller 10:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5751M Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 11) -- [ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ][ http://genaud.net ][ 55.67N 12.588E ] [ B068 ED90 F47B 0965 2953 9FC3 EE9C C4D5 3E51 A207 ] -- bluetooth not working on Feisty HP Compaq nw8240 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/138723 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Similar (or same) bug as I reported yesterday (sorry). The problem I had was a completely blank screen on installation of 7.04 on an HP/Compaq nw8240. X Server could not find any screens. [Bug 110543] Re: 7.04 Installation hangs on HP Compaq nw8240
Many times the HP/Compaq nw8240 laptop would shutdown on its own at various stages before failing to start X. However, the most recent time, I was able to edit xorg.conf and startx. This got me to the GNOME desktop. Selected System Admin Install (or something like that). Selected language, keyboard, timezone, and partitioning. let's see how it goes from here. $ sudo vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf $ startx I'm not sure which are the required modifications, but here's what I've done in xorg.conf: Added Device/Driver = ati (also changed the Device/Identifier matching the Screen/Device, both ATI Tech...), added HorizSync, VertRefresh, and DisplaySize to Monitor, and added 1920x1200 to every one of the Screen/SubSection Display/Modes. The following URLs were helpful in comming up with the above xorg.conf https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-driver-ati/+bug/20283 http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com/msg202892.html https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/110543 http://librarian.launchpad.net/6673342/xorg.conf My installation got pretty far, seemed to hang on 88% but finally failed in the 9x% range when configuring GRUB -- I have Ubuntu 6.06 installed on another partition. I assumed the setup succeeded (/install looked pretty good), so I modified the GRUB list on the root partition and restarted. Unfortunately, that did not work at all, but I am able to boot into the old partition, so I guess that's all for this bug.
