[Bug 1747333] [NEW] apparmor rules deny lease backup

2018-02-04 Thread Anand Kumria
Public bug reported:

Occasionally, I see this in my logs:

Feb 4 02:27:07 giskard2 dhcpd[11485]: Can't backup lease database

Essentially indicating that the apparmor profile has declined to allow a backup
leases file to be created. However, the files does appear to be created. I am
unsure why the message is being logged (is the file being created correctly? --
I do not know enough of dhcpd to tell).

[Bug 1441901] Re: 3G modem mode switch doesn't work when using systemd

Ahh, in fact, I've found that by modifying
/lib/systemd/system/usb_modeswitch@.service and changing ExecStart to
be:

...
ExecStart=/bin/echo %i
...

Will cause udev to handle the device normally. So it is switched
correctly.

The same problem occurs with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Cold-boot, particularly, this seems to fail.

Basically the problem is that usb_modeswitch_dispatcher is called with
incorrect arguments.

However, calling, usb_modeswitch_dispatcher with the following:

Seems to work fine.

[Bug 1406729] [NEW] dig does not have a default trusted key

2014-12-31 Thread Anand Kumria
Public bug reported:

dig, as supplied, will not validate a DNSSEC domain.

The +sigchase option should cause validation to occur but it does not.

As noted in http://bryars.eu/2010/08/validating-and-exploring-dnssec-
with-dig/ if a file called 'trusted-key.key' is present then dig will
use that.

By default dig will look in /etc/trusted-key.key and then the current
directory.

By supplying the file /etc/trusted-key.key, dig's signature checking
will work out of the box.

Thanks,
Anand

[Bug 782614] Re: make configuring DNSSEC validation easier

2014-12-31 Thread Anand Kumria
Just a note on this 3 year old bug.

The gauge on the root servers has been gauged - DNSSEC was turned on
many years ago.

You can enable and turn this on by default and the traffic will be
neglible.

[Bug 1173483] [NEW] dhclient segfaults on interfaces it can not handle

2013-04-27 Thread Anand Kumria
Public bug reported:

Hi,

This is with version: 4.2.4-5ubuntu2wf1, which is a backport to precise
of the current raring dhcp verion (4.2.4-5ubuntu2).

The only modification is changing the targeted release.

I was under the impression that ISC DHCP (now) supported prefix
delegation.

Installing the isc-client-dbg is a bit more revealing:

It is a shame that ISC DHCP still does not support DHCPv6 PD over PPP
interfaces but it certainly should not segfault when attempting to report an
error.

[Bug 1090593] Re: D.ROOT-SERVERS.NET changing January 3rd 2013

2013-04-10 Thread Anand Kumria
As noted in http://d.root-servers.org/renumber.html, the change will be
done on the 3rd Jan and the old IP address will be retried 6 months
later.

Could we get proposed-update packages before the 3rd Jun (when the old
IP will stop responding)?

I'm presuming that the Ubuntu guys are waiting until the start of May so
that 8.04 LTS does not need new packages.

Re: [Bug 675573] Re: fails to suspend / resume on certified hardware

2012-07-25 Thread Anand Kumria
Hi,

A year has passed since this bug was confirmed.

18 months have elapsed since I first reported it.

This is not directed at you personally, but I believe that if a
distribution wants to have people test it's early, alpha or beta,
versions the best way is to engage people who report bugs.

Ubuntu has consistently demonstrated that it is not able to.

And the quality of Ubuntu has suffered, and continues to suffer, as a
result.

I no longer use Ubuntu simply because the bug reporting experience has
been so terrible.

Thanks,
Anand

Anand Kumria, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please provide the information following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend ? As well, can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
 available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the
 development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and
attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do
not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the
bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the
'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow
pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description
and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment
on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
 tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not
boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment
as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

2012-07-25 Thread Anand Kumria
Hi Chris,

I'm unlikely to do any of the suggestions you mention as, as you've
read, I no longer use Ubuntu.

Well, I do - but I never bother to report bugs anymore.

Making Ubuntu better for others, by reporting bugs, is - as I
explained - unrewarding.

Regards,
Anand

2011-12-06 Thread Anand Kumria
I have:

indicator-sound (0.7.9-0ubuntu2.1) oneiric-proposed; urgency=low

installed, and apport came up and directed me to this error.

Unhelpfully, it has not offered a bug pattern or core dump or anything.

However this occurred when I plugged in an external keyboard and used
the sound control keys on the external keyboard rather than my laptop.

[Bug 697095] Re: polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 crashed with SIGSEGV in g_datalist_id_set_data_full() during logout

2011-11-03 Thread Anand Kumria
#134 indicates that #6 is the reason for marking as wontfix and not open
to SRU.

#6 just says that it happens on logout.

Actually, this is a particularly egregious and annoying bug.

It happens on shutdown too.

It means that a laptop will lock-up, and you need to forcibly power it
off, and then wait for a fsck when next starting.

The condition for this bug to be triggered is:
 - install updates that require a reboot
 - perform the reboot via the menu
 - wait for machine to lock-up

2011-08-25 Thread Anand Kumria
I've asked on IRC, and was told it was OK to subscribe the stable-sru team.

I was also told that https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates is
geared towards the people uploading a fix (i.e. developers and not bug
reporters)

So, it isn't clear to me what other things I should do apart from
subscribing the relevant team.

Cheers,
Anand

[Bug 825825] [NEW] have DNS based verification occur by default

2011-08-13 Thread Anand Kumria
Public bug reported:

Hi,

openssh can lookup a host's key in the DNS (via the SSHFP record) and
use it compare hosts presented public key.

  VerifyHostKeyDNS yes

I believe that is the connection is secured via DNSSEC that this option
will allow for the host's key to be automagically accepted. However I
have not verified that myself.

However I have had this personally set to 'Yes' and for initial
connection to hosts which are NOT secured via DNSSEC I am prompted to
accept the key.

If you want to be more cautious with the change then perhaps setting
'VerifyHostKeyDNS ask' would be better.

Either way, I think that making this the default option will:
 - increase security for those who choose to deploy SSHFP
 - increased awareness of this ability

The only downside is that a connection will make external calls to the
DNS to determine if a SSHFP record exists.

It would be great if this change could be made before 12.04 is released.

have not verified that myself.

[Bug 782614] Re: make configuring DNSSEC validation easier

2011-08-06 Thread Anand Kumria
DNSSEC will place an additional burden on the network and, in particular, the
infrastructure based DNS servers.

The rationale to have the root key defined here but not used is that
will use some of the existing DNS infrastructure (via use of RFC5011)
and allow server operators to gauge load.

I would recommend that Ubuntu 11.10 ships with DNSSEC available (i.e.
root key but disabled) and Ubuntu 12.04 ships with DNSSEC enabled (i.e.
root key and enabled by default), so that server operators are not
overwhelmed.

[Bug 816163] [NEW] Please include support for RFC6189 (ZRTP)

Hi,

It would be great if empathy support RFC6189 (ZRTP) across the various
protocols which support it.

Typically SIP and XMPP/Jingle since they both use RTP; just as having
OTR for messaging is useful, having ZRTP is useful for confidentially of
voice communications as well.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bind9

As noted here:

http://wiki.debian.org/DNSSEC#BIND9

The are some configuration changes required to enable DNSSEC validation.

I think it would be nicer if things could be made easier.

Create an empty file /etc/bind/named.conf.keys

Include the file in /etc/bind/named.conf

Include a commented out entry in /etc/bind/named.conf.options of:

 // dnssec-validation yes;

within the options section.

This would made the steps listed there even simpler.

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: puppet

  Hi,

There are many versions of puppet, fortunately lucid (10.04) has a
relatively new version (merely called legacy from puppetlabs).

Unfortunately it has a number of bugs / issues, one of which I have
recently encountered is an underlying bug in Ruby (and OpenSSL) on
  Lucid.

However, the bug can be easily worked around, as noted two months
  after lucid's release.

  http://www.mailinglistarchive.com/html/puppet-
  us...@googlegroups.com/2010-06/msg00206.html

Basically, upgrading to the latest available version of puppet in the
'legacy' series will resolve the issue.

Re: [Bug 700945] Re: backport of patch for error message undefined method `closed?' for Nil:NilClass required.

2011-05-04 Thread Anand Kumria
Hi guys,

I am very happy to confirm that this worked great.

First it was gave me an indication that the remote server was not
responding (as per
http://bitcube.co.uk/content/puppet-errors-explained) and then it
correclt diagnosed a mismatched server identity.

Thanks for getting this fix in.

Regards,
Anand

Anand, are you still affected by the original problem, and if so, would
you be willing to try out the package from lucid-proposed?

 Bug description:
  Binary package hint: puppet

  Hi,

There are many versions of puppet, fortunately lucid (10.04) has a
relatively new version (merely called legacy from puppetlabs).

Unfortunately it has a number of bugs / issues, one of which I have
recently encountered is an underlying bug in Ruby (and OpenSSL) on
  Lucid.

However, the bug can be easily worked around, as noted two months
  after lucid's release.

  http://www.mailinglistarchive.com/html/puppet-
  us...@googlegroups.com/2010-06/msg00206.html

Basically, upgrading to the latest available version of puppet in the
'legacy' series will resolve the issue.

[Bug 598597] Re: Vinagre closes connection to tightvncserver 2.0 beta4 immediately

This is an off-by-one snprintf fix; I think this warrants being backported to
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid)

In Lucid's case the file is src/gvnc.c but I can confirm it works when gtk-vnc
is rebuilt.

[Bug 711299] [NEW] ipv6 routes which expire are not deleted quickly

2011-02-01 Thread Anand Kumria
Public bug reported:

On an IPv6 network, routes have a marked lifetime.

So, if you are connected to two IPv6 networks you may have multiple
default routes.

Not such a problem.

That route (on dev eth0) has 'expired' but the time seems to have gone
to infinity. It stays there for a while - after a few minutes (the time
it took the collect this information, submit to lauchpad and me login)
the route disappears.

But it seems to be taking a longer time that you would expect. Well,
certainly I would expect.

[Bug 700945] [NEW] puppet 0.25.5 backport required

2011-01-10 Thread Anand Kumria
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: puppet

Hi,

There are many versions of puppet, fortunately lucid (10.04) has a
relatively new version (merely called legacy from puppetlabs).

Unfortunately it has a number of bugs / issues, one of which I have
recently encountered is an underlying bug in Ruby (and OpenSSL) on
Lucid.

However, the bug can be easily worked around, as noted two months after
lucid's release.

http://www.mailinglistarchive.com/html/puppet-
us...@googlegroups.com/2010-06/msg00206.html

Basically, upgrading to the latest available version of puppet in the
'legacy' series will resolve the issue.

[Bug 420900] Re: grub2 error detecting Fedorainitrd

2010-12-24 Thread Anand Kumria
StabeUpdateRequest for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

IMPACT: As additional distributions switch to generating their initrd
using dracut, grub2 will become unable to boot them.

FIXED: The bug has been fixed upstream in os-prober version 1.39
(included in Ubuntu 10.10)

As the bug has been fixed in a newer version of os-prober in a released
version of ubuntu, a rebuild of os-prober 1.39 for Ubuntu 10.04 should
enable access to dracut-style initramfs.

As an interesting data point, I installed the propreitary NVidia drivers and
suspend / resume work perfectly (same kernel).

So I think that this is related to how Noveau does something.

[Bug 675573] Re: fails to suspend / resume on certified hardware

2010-12-01 Thread Anand Kumria
Hi Jeremy,

I read the wiki page you indicated. (It would be good if you could
duplicate this bug and file it against the appropriate web person to
have this machine removed from the certified list -- since it seems to
be incorrect).

According to that page, I looked at:
 http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/info/kernel-version-map.html
to identify the most appropriate kernel.

I am running lucid - so I think the most appropriate kernel version would be:
 Lucid (master -0)
Ubuntu Kernel Version Mainline Kernel Version
 TIP 2.6.32.26+drm33.12
 2.6.32-27.492.6.32.26+drm33.12

Reading that document further, it indicates that the simplest way to install
this is to look in:
 http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/
Where, it says, Each build directory contains the header and image .deb files
for the i386 and amd64 architectures, generic flavour.

Unfortunately that directory does not contain any images. In fact, I
have to go back to 'http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/daily/2010-11-22-natty/' in order to find any. Actually
that was the ONLY directory that did contain kernel images.

Note that there appears to be nothing related to '-lucid' in the
mainline directory.

Could you confirm that this test will actually be useful since the
kernel in lucid in unlikely to ever become the kernel being used in
maverick or natty.

Thanks,
Anand

P.S. Not an automated message.

[Bug 675573] [NEW] fails to suspend / resume on certified hardware

2010-11-15 Thread Anand Kumria
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Ubuntu fails to correctly suspend / resume on this device.

Despite is being marked as certified. I am unclear if the certification
is done by the vendor or Canonical.

But http://webapps.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201001-4955/ is
clearly not correct.

[Bug 640432] Re: X does not start (nouveau)

2010-09-28 Thread Anand Kumria

OK - sorry that I've been unable to update this bug.

I have four kernels on my system (currently).

kernel | attempt 1 | attempt 2 | attempt 3
--
2.6.32-24-gen| good| good| good
2.6.35-19-gen| bad | bad | bad
2.6.35-20-gen| good| bad | good
2.6.35-22-gen| bad | bad | good

The only reason I even tried multiple boot attempts was when I was
writing down 2.6.35-20 and 2.6.35-22 I wanted to re-confirm that the
results I had. And they differed.

Let me know if I should try any additional kernel versions.

[Bug 640432] Re: X does not start (noveau)

2010-09-21 Thread Anand Kumria

tried with 2.6.35-22.33; no change.

I noticed this in the X log file:

[12.064] (II) Initializing built-in extension GESTURE
[12.068] (II) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/nouveau_dri.so failed
(/usr/lib/dri/nouveau_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory)
[12.068] (II) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
[12.068] (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
[12.070] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so

No idea if this is related.

Please let me know if there is any further things I can test out.

Thanks,
Anand
