[Bug 1339607] [NEW] Unencrypted private keys are insecure message is vague and unhelpful

2014-07-09 Thread Andrea Corbellini
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Set up a wireless connection with WPA security and an unencrypted private
key.
2. Make sure Network Manager will connect as soon as the wireless network is
available.
2. Reboot the computer.

What happens:
Network manager will connect to the network during boot. If it completes before
login, you are presented with the following message:

 Unencrypted private keys are insecure
The selected private key does not appear to be protected by a password. This
could allow your security credentials to be compromised. Please select a
 password-protected private key.

(You can password-protect your private key with openssl)

This message is really uninformative and unhelpful for many reasons:
* It does not tell me which program/key is the problem. Initially I though that
the problem had to do with one of my SSH keys. I had to grep the message in
/usr/bin in order to understand who was showing it.
* It does not tell why exactly unencrypted keys are insecure. In fact, someone
might say they aren't.
* It does not tell how to encrypt them. You can password-protect your private
key with openssl does not mean anything, even to a person who knows what
OpenSSL is.

TL;DR: you are warned about a problem which does not exist, without
being told what it is and how to solve it.

[Bug 1244635] Re: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host

2013-10-26 Thread Andrea Corbellini
I also don't feel that this is a high priority bug since, so far, we
do not recommend allowing unprivileged users to use containers.

Agreed. Especially because (currently) it's fairly easy to escape from
LXC when you have root access to the container.

I don't believe it would be a serious loss of functionality to chmod 0700
 /var/lib/lxc.
 ...
So I think a regular update in trusty with SRUs to all previous releases is
 ok.

I've used this functionality many times in the past. While I can do
without it in exchange for security, some people may have written
scripts that depend on this functionality, hence a SRU would be nasty
for them.

My personal opinion is: LXC is insecure and it does not deserve
potentially dangerous security updates in stable releases.

[Bug 1244635] Re: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host

2013-10-26 Thread Andrea Corbellini
Hi Stéphane,

I can see at least three ways of escaping.

The first is using LXC through libvirt. I see that there's an Apparmor
profile for usr.bin.lxc-start, but AFAIK libvirt does not use lxc-start.
Also, libvirt does not load the lxc-containers profile (AFAIK).

This is proven by the fact that `cat
/sys/kernel/security/apparmor/profiles` does not fail when done from
within my LXC+libvirt guest.

Also, reading /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/lxc/container-base I see that
there are many deny rules, but you are missing at least two:
/sys/kernel/uevent_helper and /sys/class/mem/null/uevent. See
http://blog.bofh.it/debian/id_413 for a way for escaping using these two
files.

Finally, while there are rules that deny read and writes to /sys, but
there are no rules that deny me to e.g. `mount -t sysfs sysfs /tmp/sys`
or bind-mount /sys to an another location. (I'm not sure about this
point because, you know, I'm using libvirt and I cannot test.)

[Bug 1244635] Re: setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host

2013-10-26 Thread Andrea Corbellini
Good news.

However I must say that the documentation on LXC does not say that
libvirt is less secure than the official LXC:
https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/serverguide/lxc.html#lxc-libvirt

So either libvirt should ship with an Apparmor profile for LXC, or a
warning should be added to the relevant places of the documentation

https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/serverguide/lxc.html#lxc-libvirt

So either libvirt should ship with an Apparmor profile for LXC, or a
warning should be added to the relevant places of the documentation

[Bug 1244635] [NEW] setuid executables in a container may compromise security on the host

2013-10-25 Thread Andrea Corbellini
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

If I execute /var/lib/lxc/NAME/rootfs/usr/bin/sudo -i on the host
system, it works exactly like /usr/bin/sudo -i.

Now suppose that a user that has root access to the LXC container
creates a flawed setuid executable. What happens is that now the host
system is flawed too.

For example, I can patch the container's sudo to skip the authentication
checks and then use /var/lib/lxc/NAME/rootfs/usr/bin/sudo from the host
to gain root privileges.

This assumes that you have both root access to the container and
unprivileged access to the host. However the point is: insecure
filesystem policies in a container may be source of security holes on
the host system.

Of course, the same applies to capabilities too, not just the setuid/gid
bits.

A possible solution to this problem would be to chmod 0700 the
/var/lib/lxc directory. However doing so you lose the ability to browse
files on the container from the host.

An alternative would be to tell Apparmor to deny the execution of every
file contained in /var/lib/lxc. (Or at least, to deny the execution of
setuid/gid/cap files, if that's possible.)

** Affects: lxc (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1229103] [NEW] clicking on a launcher icon does not change your workspace

2013-09-23 Thread Andrea Corbellini
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. open a terminal window in workspace 1;
2. move to workspace 2;
3. click the terminal icon on the launcher.

What should happen:
* terminal window should receive focus;
* workspace should automatically change from 2 to 1.

What happens instead:
* terminal window receives focus;
* workspace doesn't change.

This is particularly annoying and potentially dangerous, because you are
giving focus to a window that you can't see.

This bug looks exactly like bug #683134.

[Bug 52654] Re: Evolution will not use GNOME proxy settings of http_proxy environment variable to access Exchange via WebDAV

2013-07-24 Thread Andrea Corbellini
From the upstream bug
[https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=307589#c25]:

evolution-exchange only supports the older Microsoft Exchange server versions
2000 and 2003. The last stable release of evolution-exchange was 3.4.4 which
took place a year ago.

evolution-exchange is now deprecated and not under active development
anymore.

It is unlikely that there will be any further active development.

Closing this report as WONTFIX as part of Bugzilla Housekeeping.

Please feel free to reopen this bug report in the future if anyone takes the
responsibility for active development again.

[Bug 1169280] Re: Geary crashes after ~1mn activity

2013-06-14 Thread Andrea Corbellini
Hi there. Fix Committed in Ubuntu means that either the fix is available
in -proposed or an upload is going to be made soon. Of course, this
applies to packages in the Ubuntu repository, not packages in PPAs and
so on. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status for more details.

As I cannot find any evidence that this bug has been fixed in Ubuntu,
I'm reverting the status change (but please tell me if I'm wrong).

[Bug 1165576] Re: geary crashed with SIGABRT in raise()

2013-05-07 Thread Andrea Corbellini
Thanks for your help making Ubuntu better.

This bug was filed using an outdated version of libglib (yours is
2.36.0-1ubuntu1, latest is 2.36.0-1ubuntu2). This is the most probable
reason why the retrace failed.

Because the latest version of libglib may have fixed this bug, I'm
invalidating it. In the case the problem occurs again, please be sure to
have applied the latest updates and report a new bug in the same way you
have done now. This will give us chances to have an helpful stacktrace.

Thanks!

[Bug 1165576] Re: geary crashed with SIGABRT in raise()

2013-05-07 Thread Andrea Corbellini
The problem is that Apport cannot build retraces for packages that are
no longer in the archive, so the only way to obtain useful information
is to let the crash happen again and let the user file a new bug report.

By the way, glib2.0 was the only package I've checked. Probably there
are other outdated packages, probably with some relevant patches. You
can view all the versions of the packages the user is using in the
Dependencies.txt attachment. I'm also attaching a diff between the
user's versions and my own versions. As you will see, the diff is not
short and includes some glib/gtk packages.

[Bug 960288] Re: Notify OSD bubble sometimes appears as a single line of pixels

2013-05-03 Thread Andrea Corbellini
This program is caused by programs that send notifications with a null
summary.

I have fixed this bug in Geary and have done some research around this
problem [1]:

Giving a quick look to https://developer.gnome.org/notification-spec/ it
seems that 'body' is optional and may not be supported by all notification
servers (Table 1. Notification Components, Table 5. Server Capabilities).
'summary' seems to be required, although I couldn't find any explicit
 sentence saying so.

So the problem seems to be arised by applications that do not follow the
specification. However it's worth noting that Notify-OSD could be
smarter and show the body of the notification even if no summary has
been set.

[Bug 1001646] Re: kdenlive0.9-1 is missing xine for DVD preview

2013-02-21 Thread Andrea Corbellini
Dear melchiaros and Paolo,

It's true that kdenlive should come with xine installed. However what
Julian pointed out is that xine is not a dependency of kdenlive, it
should be a recommendation. I.e.: kdenlive does not need xine in order
to work properly, it needs it to improve it's functionality. Remember
that recommended packages are installed by default.

Julian also said that kdenlive is maintained in Debian (the 'base' of
Ubuntu), and this bug should be fixed there. There is no need to
increase the delta between Debian and Ubuntu for such a small change.

[Bug 1128236] [NEW] Moving an icon on the launcher implies locking it

2013-02-17 Thread Andrea Corbellini
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Suppose that Gedit and Firefox are not locked on the launcher.
2. Open Gedit and Firefox.
3. Move the Gedit icon above/below the Firefox one.

What I expect to happen?
The Gedit icon should be above/below the Firefox one, and nothing else should
have changed.

What happens instead?
The icon is correctly moved, however it is also locked.

To be clear: with 'locked' here I mean that right-clicking the icon
shows Unlock from launcher, i.e. when I close Gedit, its icon is still
on the launcher.

shouldn't).

Please, feel free to report an another bug about that. There is a

It does not make any sense to continue a discussion on an old bug report
that is about a totally different issue.

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2013-01-31 Thread Andrea Corbellini
Dear Aleve,

Please, do not modify this old bug. You are wasting contributors' time.

As John Lea has already pointed out, the issue you are describing has
already been reported as bug #717444.

The reason why this bug should remain closed is that a fix has already
been written for it. If you are still affected by the bug, then the root
cause may be totally different. 'Symptoms' and 'causes' are totally
different concepts, and for the propuse of this bug tracker we only look
at causes (because we fix the causes, not the symptoms).

I'm sorry that you are having difficulties, but this is not the right
place to discuss.

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2013-01-31 Thread Andrea Corbellini
If I understand this bug's description correctly, this problem exists in
 Unity-2D on
Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin. This is an LTS release - according to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases it will be supported on both the desktop and
the server until April 2017. This should mean fully and wholly supported, not
 partly supported.

That's true, but 'supported' means security and severe bug fixes only.
See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#When for more
information.

I also disagree with marking this bug's unity-2d task as Invalid while the
 upstream GNOME
 bug is still open

Also, you should note that the situation in the GNOME bug is a bit
different. Firstly, there is no consensus on whether Metacity or the
theme(s) should be fixed. Secondly, whilist Metacity has not been
deprecated (AFAIK), it is no longer the development focus of GNOME. In
fact, the last comment made by a developer was made on 2011-01-10.

as this implies that even if GNOME were to develop and deploy a fix,
Ubuntu would not adopt the fix.

I removed the metacity task just to make it clear that this bug is
closed and to reduce the bug noise. This does not imply that if a fix is
released by GNOME, then it won't be adopted by Ubuntu. We do not
'filter' upstream code. If Metacity makes a new release with the fix
included, then it will just be packaged.

And of course the fact that GNOME are considering fixing
this issue should not in any way preclude Ubuntu from attempting to fix it.

Again, you are free to open a bug about it, although I doubt it will be
fixed as there are no developers working on Metacity on Ubuntu. Anyhow,
the point is: this particular one is too old and too long to be useful.
Your opinions are welcome, but if you continue posting here, they will
just be ignored.

[Bug 366644] Re: terminator does not honor x-terminal-emulator -e option

We could do the following: if terminator is invoked as x-terminal-

terminal.

[Bug 366644] Re: terminator does not honor x-terminal-emulator -e option

2013-01-30 Thread Andrea Corbellini
I proposed that behavior for two reasons:

1. if one invokes x-terminal-emulator, he expects that it behaves like any
x-terminal-emulator; and
2. this is a common behavior. Examples include: adduser (which can be invoked
as addgroup), bash (which can be invoked as sh) and zsh (which can be invoked
as sh or ksh).

So I'm in favor of the invocation name+setting alternative, rather than
just the setting.

For completeness, here is an another alternative: copy and adapt gnome-
terminal.wrapper. This is a perl wrapper around gnome-terminal that is
used for x-terminal-emulator. It is very short and adapting consists in
changing just the last line.

[Bug 1108987] Re: Package dracut cannot be installed on Ubuntu 12.10

2013-01-29 Thread Andrea Corbellini
** Description changed:

- The package dracut cannot be installed on Ubuntu 12.10 as it conflicts
- with the initramfs-tools package. Due to the conflict, the package
- dracut can never be installed as initramfs-tools cannot be removed.
-
- In an answer to my question regarding this problem on askUbuntu [1] the
- answer was, that dracut and initramfs-tools should both depend on linux-
- initramfs-tools (which is a virtual package provided by both initramfs-
- tools and dracut).
-
- [1] http://askubuntu.com/questions/248970/how-to-install-dracut-on-

+ The package dracut cannot be installed as it conflicts with initramfs-
+ tools package. initramfs-tools is a dependency of many core packages and
+ cannot be removed without removing essential tools like the kernel. For
+ this reason, the package dracut can never be installed.

I just checked on another installation and dracut is installing fine on

[Bug 1109029] [NEW] Depend on linux-initramfs-tools

Public bug reported:

Many core packages depend on initramfs-tools when they should actually
depend on linux-initramfs-tools (virtual package provided by initramfs-

[Bug 1108987] Re: Package dracut cannot be installed on Ubuntu 12.10

2013-01-29 Thread Andrea Corbellini
I've filed bug #1109029 to track the transition from initramfs-tools to
linux-initramfs-tools.

It has still to be decided whether dracut should Confict with initramfs-
tools or not. The conflict has been introduced in version
018+32+geb6e141-1, but there is no mention about the reasons in the
changelog.

[Bug 693842] Re: Merge nautilus-open-terminal with nautilus.

2013-01-10 Thread Andrea Corbellini
Thank you for your bug report. Unfortunately, the Ubuntu project does
not 'own' neither nautilus nor its plugins, so this is something that
the Ubuntu project can't do.

This request should instead be proposed on bugzilla.gnome.org, like
Pedro said.

dash) have a builtin kill command which do not support -L.
