[Bug 1875200] Re: [amdgpu] Entire computer freezes shortly after bootup

2020-07-11 Thread Andreas Trottmann
I installed https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v5.8-rc4/amd64/linux-
modules-5.8.0-050800-generic_5.8.0-050800.202007052030_amd64.deb and
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.8-rc4/amd64/linux-
headers-5.8.0-050800-generic_5.8.0-050800.202007052030_amd64.deb and
booted into it.

It appears there was no change in behaviour; about 1 in 10 bootup
attempts succeeds, and when it succeeds, it runs fine for a long time.

[Bug 1875200] Re: [amdgpu] Entire computer freezes shortly after bootup

2020-05-28 Thread Andreas Trottmann
The "nomodeset" parameter is only used when booting into recovery mode.
When NOT booting into recovery mode, without the "nomodeset" parameter,
it looks like about one in every 10 bootups succeeds and runs in a
stable way for many days, while the other nine attempts crash after a
few seconds up to about two minutes.

[Bug 1875200] Re: [amdgpu] Entire computer freezes shortly after bootup

2020-05-09 Thread Andreas Trottmann
Sorry for the delay - something very weird happened.

On April 29, the system hanged in the "Black screen with Lenovo and
Ubuntu on both monitors" phase. I then hard-reset the machine (as usual)
and generated the log file as instructed by you. It is attached to this
comment as prevboot-hang-on-black-ubuntu.txt

However, I then noticed that I mistakenly did NOT boot into recovery
mode, but into normal mode, and the system hadn't crashed!

I checked with "glxgears -info" that indeed the hardware renderer was
used (not llvmpipe) and wanted to find out how long the system would
work this way.

It turns out that it worked - with regular usage, mostly Chrome and
Terminal but also some video playback - until I had to reboot it for
unrelated reasons on May 5th, with multiple suspend/resume cycles.

While using it I noticed some situations when a terminal window would
display something that looked like a rectangular area failing to update;
or maybe something like "double buffering gone wrong", i.e. it would
display - in a rectangular area - content that had been displayed
before. Refreshing the terminal would fix it.

>From May 5th until today I had to use the system in Windows (where
nothing noticeable happened); now I rebooted into Ubuntu again and
promptly the system crashed again, this time while inputting the
password in the login screen. I'll attach prevboot-hang-on-login-
screen.txt later.

[Bug 1875200] Re: Entire computer freezes shortly after bootup

2020-04-26 Thread Andreas Trottmann
Looks like the bug was submitted with all information. Note: I submitted
it in a stable state, after the computer was booted in recovery mode.
When booting the computer normally, I have not yet had a situation that
allowed me to have it working long enough for a bug report to be
possible.

[Bug 1875200] [NEW] Entire computer freezes shortly after bootup

2020-04-26 Thread Andreas Trottmann
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure if this bug was filed completely; I used the "ubuntu-bug"
command which gathered a lot of information and files, but then the
bugs.launchpad.net site timeouted and I'm not sure if the information I
entered before and the files that were gathered have actually been
submitted.

Summary: after an upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 my entire computer freezes
some seconds after bootup. It does not even reply to pings anymore and
remote logins stop working as well. When booting it in recovery mode and
then immediately using the menu option to continue booting, it appears
to work reliably, but it only detects one monitor and there is no 3d
acceleration.

I've seen freezes happening at the following points:

a) at the stage of a black screnen saying "lenovo" in the middle and
"ubuntu" at the bottom (of both monitors)

b) when asking for username and password to login

c) after login

When I was using the same computer with Ubuntu 19.10, there was no such problem.
