[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow
I have been following this bug report for a long time now and here is some advice to the people that have only recently begun to post here. This bug has hundreds of postings and no reasonable person could possible read all of them in order to start fixing something. Through time it has become obvious that this is not one single bug. It is very possible that there several bugs that each leads to reduced speed under different circumstances. If you read several comments back, you will discover that some people tried to fix this bug, but they were unable to reproduce it. Apparently it is not a Dolphin or Nautilus issue and in any case you should start excluding stuff so that you can find the heart of the problem. So, many postings earlier there was an agreement that people should stop posting to this bug. Instead, people should start new bug reports and post specific data that could be useful to bug fixers. The best way to provide bug fixers with useful data is to follow the instructions that appear here. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DiskPerformance If you have the time and you want to help, please conduct some tests and test your theory about what affects the USB performance. If you think you discover something, please post a new bug report. -- file transfers on USB disk are very slow https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197762 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I ran a test with a different USB Flash drive. The Corsair Voyagermini (4GB). It has a maximum write speed of 5MB/sec, which I understand it's quite common for flash drives. It did reach its maximum speed of 5Mb/sec. The Crucial Gizmo Plus (that I tested initially) also performed as fast, but never reached its own maximum speed of 10Mb/sec, that achieves on Windows and Intrepid. [Bug 392089] Re: Slow USB transfer for FAT32
I formatted an external hard disk as fat32 and ran a test. It went pretty well. Here's what dd wrote as a result avl...@avlass-kubuntu64:~$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/EXTFAT32/test-file bs=32 dd: writing `/media/EXTFAT32/test-file': File too large 134217728+0 records in 134217727+0 records out 4294967295 bytes (4.3 GB) copied, 320.683 s, 13.4 MB/s avl...@avlass-kubuntu64:~$ I guess the problem is not with fat32, but with fat32 and USB sticks specifically. I also attach the relevant dstat output. I will try to test the speed with some other USB flash disks, but I don't have another right now. In the mean time, if someone thinks that performing a certain test will help draw further conclusions, please let me know. The reason I am pursuing this so much is that I believe it is possible that this problem is related with other known (or unknown) issues that affect USB trasfer rates. So any help will be much appreciated. ** Attachment added: dstat output G31 PC Kubuntu Jaunty 64 5min ext disk fat32.txt http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28591414/dstat%20output%20G31%20PC%20Kubuntu%20Jaunty%2064%205min%20ext%20disk%20fat32.txt -- Slow USB transfer for FAT32 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/392089 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 392089] Re: Slow USB transfer for FAT32
I ran a few more tests on another PC and got some very interesting results. The PC has an ASUS P5KPL-VM motherboard based on the Intel G31 chipset. The results were the same for Kubuntu jaunty 64-bit and Kubuntu Jaunty 32-bit. So it's not a problem of the hardware (unless it's the USB flash drive itself) and it's not a problem of the 64-bit version. I also used the pci=routeirq and the pci=noacpi options on boot with no effect. BUT... the problem does not appear in Hardy or Intrepid. It only appears in jaunty. Public bug reported: This bug is spin off of bug file transfers on USB disk are very slow https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/197762 I did some tests and found out that when writing to my USB flash disk the speed is quite low. KpackageKit is one of the prominent advertised features in Kubuntu. Not being able to carry out half the things it's supposed to do is really bad for Kubuntu reputation. Thanks for your comment Neil. Totem has a known problem when playing a DVD in Intrepid. Take a look at the following: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gst-plugins- bad0.10/+bug/260765 Try playing DVDs with another player, such as VLC or MPlayer. If they play ok then it is a Totem bug (either the one above or something else), if they don't play ok post the symptoms here. Also, keep in mind that the bug reported here is about specific DVDs that can't be played, not any DVD. I am beginning to believe that this might be a hardware problem. My PC #1 and Laptop play the DVD with no problem on Hardy and Intrepid. I will install Hardy on PC#2 that originally had the problem. [Bug 196277] Re: A GNOME login without keypress dosn't set GNOME keyboard settings
I cannot say if it is easy, hard or impossible to fix in Hardy. I really don't know enough technical stuff. If it can't be done, or if it's too hard to do it, so be it. I just want to make sure that the people who decide to fix it or not, understand just how important this issue is for everybody that does not use a Latin character alphabet. It's not just about Greece and Bulgaria, but also about China, Thailand and many other countries. This bug makes it quite unfit for professional use (e.g. people writing documents in offices). Furthermore, if I want my business to start using Ubuntu, I would definitely go for the LTS, so I would be able to stick with it for as long as possible. I would not use the latest release for the same reason many businesses do not use Windows Vista (I would assume it's still buggy). As for paid support, I do not believe anyone should pay for support for a feature that is needed, by half the counties in the world. [Bug 242067] Re: Gadmin-proftpd don't start testing Ubuntu intrepid 64-bit
The Could not launch menu item Failed to execute child process su-to-root (No such file or directory) problem is because you do not have the su-to-root application installed. apparently the su-to-root allows you to run an application as super user, similarly to sudo. If you add the -X option it is equivalent to gksudo. Just install the package menu using synaptic and this problem will be solved. I really do not know we this package is not already installed, or why gksudo is not used in the first place. I upgraded to Intrepid 32-bit from Hardy (32-bit), may be a clean install would not have the problem. Now that the su-to-root problem is behind us, the problem remains that the GUI crashes. It appears that the gadmin-proftpd version that is currently in the repositories has a bug (see also https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gadmin-proftpd/+bug/276181). Just install the newer version from here http://debian.cs.binghamton.edu/debian/pool/main/g/gadmin-proftpd/ and the problem will be solved. I do not know if it matters, but I completely removed the gproftpd package (which apparently is outdated now), just to be on the safe side. The package you have to download is: gadmin-proftpd_0.3.5-2_i386.deb -- for 32-bit systems or gadmin-proftpd_0.3.5-2_amd64.deb -- for 64-bit systems Let me know if this worked for you. -- Gadmin-proftpd don't start testing Ubuntu intrepid 64-bit https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/242067 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
