2010-09-23 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
Ok, I understand it's a skype thing and has nothing to do with this bug
report.

Thanks MMarking this really worked.

Since I use the 64-bit version of Ubuntu I had to amend the line you
wrote to:

[Bug 492744] Re: gspca_main gspca_ov519, please add recent v4l patch to include Creative 041e:4067 webcam

2010-09-22 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
I have a Creative 041e:4052 webcam that used to work with the ov51x-jpeg
hacked source from rastageeks.

I am currently running kernel 2.6.32-24

Here is what I get from dmesg

$ dmesg |grep gspca
[7.777906] gspca: main v2.7.0 registered
[7.780260] gspca: probing 041e:4052
[ 12.891900] gspca: probe ok

It does not work with skype. The light indicator on the camera flashes
momentarily and then nothing.

Is this normal, am I doing something wrong or did something got out of
place again?

This bug seems to be related to bug

and it also seems it was solved for Karmic

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/492744

but now it's back for Lucid (kernels 2.6.32-21 and -22).

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-12-14 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
I have been following this bug report for a long time now and here is
some advice to the people that have only recently begun to post here.

This bug has hundreds of postings and no reasonable person could
possible read all of them in order to start fixing something.

Through time it has become obvious that this is not one single bug. It
is very possible that there several bugs that each leads to reduced
speed under different circumstances.

If you read several comments back, you will discover that some people
tried to fix this bug, but they were unable to reproduce it. Apparently
it is not a Dolphin or Nautilus issue and in any case you should start
excluding stuff so that you can find the heart of the problem.

So, many postings earlier there was an agreement that people should stop
posting to this bug. Instead, people should start new bug reports and
post specific data that could be useful to bug fixers.

The best way to provide bug fixers with useful data is to follow the
instructions that appear here.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DiskPerformance

If you have the time and you want to help, please conduct some tests and
test your theory about what affects the USB performance. If you think
you discover something, please post a new bug report.

[Bug 392089] Re: Slow USB transfer for FAT32

2009-07-05 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
I ran a test with a different USB Flash drive. The Corsair Voyagermini
(4GB). It has a maximum write speed of 5MB/sec, which I understand it's
quite common for flash drives. It did reach its maximum speed of
5Mb/sec.

The Crucial Gizmo Plus (that I tested initially) also performed as
fast, but never reached its own maximum speed of 10Mb/sec, that
achieves on Windows and Intrepid.

I am always willing to perform any tests you think would be helpful.

[Bug 392089] Re: Slow USB transfer for FAT32

2009-07-01 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
I formatted an external hard disk as fat32 and ran a test. It went
pretty well. Here's what dd wrote as a result

avl...@avlass-kubuntu64:~$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/EXTFAT32/test-file bs=32
dd: writing `/media/EXTFAT32/test-file': File too large

4294967295 bytes (4.3 GB) copied, 320.683 s, 13.4 MB/s
avl...@avlass-kubuntu64:~$

I guess the problem is not with fat32, but with fat32 and USB sticks
specifically.

I also attach the relevant dstat output.

I will try to test the speed with some other USB flash disks, but I
don't have another right now.

In the mean time, if someone thinks that performing a certain test will
help draw further conclusions, please let me know.

The reason I am pursuing this so much is that I believe it is possible
that this problem is related with other known (or unknown) issues that
affect USB trasfer rates. So any help will be much appreciated.

[Bug 392089] Re: Slow USB transfer for FAT32

2009-06-30 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
I ran a few more tests on another PC and got some very interesting
results.

The PC has an ASUS P5KPL-VM motherboard based on the Intel G31 chipset.

The results were the same for Kubuntu jaunty 64-bit and Kubuntu Jaunty
32-bit.

So it's not a problem of the hardware (unless it's the USB flash drive
itself) and it's not a problem of the 64-bit version.

I also used the pci=routeirq and the pci=noacpi options on boot with no
effect.

BUT... the problem does not appear in Hardy or Intrepid. It only appears
in jaunty.

All tests were conducted after clean installs and with no updates.

The following are average times as reported from dd:

Hardy
avl...@avlass-desktop:~$ dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/disk/test-file bs=32

[Bug 392089] [NEW] Slow USB transfer for FAT32

2009-06-25 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
Public bug reported:

This bug is spin off of bug file transfers on USB disk are very
slow

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/197762

I did some tests and found out that when writing to my USB flash disk
the speed is quite low. I observed that the situation is improved (or
rather resolved) if the flash disk is formated as ext3, so this can be a
problem with fat32. I also have an external USB hard disk (NTFS
formated) which seems to work in satisfactory way. This further supports
the fact that the problem affects fat32 formatted disks.

I ran several tests according to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DiskPerformance (and also some other
tests). In all cases I made sure that the flash disk was detected as a
high speed device (USB 2.0) and not as a full speed device (USB 1.1)
using the lsusb command.

Since the problem is obvious for very large files I let dd create a test
file for about 5 minutes

The facts:

When I generate a load using dd for about 5 minutes the results from dd
are:

FAT32 USB flash disk:1617933312 bytes (1.6 GB) copied, 305.66 s, 5.3 MB/s
ext3 USB flash disk: 41091136 bytes (41 MB) copied, 3.85154 s, 10.7 MB/s
NTFS Hard disk: 4294967295 bytes (4.3 GB) copied, 290.644 s, 14.8
MB/s (maximum file size was reached in less than 5mins

The same USB flash disk performs roughly twice as fast on a Windows XP
machine.

The USB flash disk claims to be able to write at 10MB/sec and read at
15MB/sec

The hardware
M/B -- ECS GF7050VT-M5 (nvidia 7050 chipset), with the

USB Flash Disk -- Crucial Gizmo! plus 4Gb (JDOH4GB-730)
Hard Disk -- Western Digital WD300 connected with no-name IDE-to-USB

[Bug 392089] Re: Slow USB transfer for FAT32

2009-06-25 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
** Description changed:

This bug is spin off of bug file transfers on USB disk are very

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/197762

I did some tests and found out that when writing to my USB flash disk
the speed is quite low. I observed that the situation is improved (or
rather resolved) if the flash disk is formated as ext3, so this can be a
problem with fat32. I also have an external USB hard disk (NTFS

the fact that the problem affects fat32 formatted disks.

I ran several tests according to
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DiskPerformance (and also some other
tests). In all cases I made sure that the flash disk was detected as a

[Bug 342671] Re: Doesn't support installations which require a removal or updates which require additional software

2009-04-30 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
KpackageKit is one of the prominent advertised features in Kubuntu. Not
being able to carry out half the things it's supposed to do is really
bad for Kubuntu reputation.

This kind of thing gives every user a problem they should solve (even
the ones who don't like problem-solving).

It should definitely be a high priority.

Have you changed the port FTP listens to?

If yes, set the port back to the default value (21) and see if the
problem persists.

Also, I know it's pretty stupid, but... try to restart the router.

I had a lot of problems executing specific commands (such as LIST) and
took a day or two, just to find out that it was a router problem.

It's extremely easy.

If you have downloaded a .deb file, all you have to do is double click
it and follow the on-screen instructions (you will need your admin
password during the process).

Check the following link for more specific instructions.

[Bug 300645] Re: Cannot play encrypted DVD

2008-12-24 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
Thanks for your comment Neil.

Totem has a known problem when playing a DVD in Intrepid. Take a look at
the following:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gst-plugins-
bad0.10/+bug/260765

Try playing DVDs with another player, such as VLC or MPlayer. If they
play ok then it is a Totem bug (either the one above or something else),
if they don't play ok post the symptoms here.

Also, keep in mind that the bug reported here is about specific DVDs
that can't be played, not any DVD. As a matter of fact most DVDs play
ok.

[Bug 300645] Re: Cannot play encrypted DVD

2008-12-24 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
I am beginning to believe that this might be a hardware problem. My PC
#1 and Laptop play the DVD with no problem on Hardy and Intrepid.

I will install Hardy on PC#2 that originally had the problem. If it
plays ok with Hardy, then it's an Intrepid problem. If not, then it's
probably hardware.

[Bug 196277] Re: A GNOME login without keypress dosn't set GNOME keyboard settings

2008-12-11 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
I cannot say if it is easy, hard or impossible to fix in Hardy. I really
don't know enough technical stuff.

If it can't be done, or if it's too hard to do it, so be it.

I just want to make sure that the people who decide to fix it or not,
understand just how important this issue is for everybody that does not
use a Latin character alphabet. It's not just about Greece and Bulgaria,
but also about China, Thailand and many other countries.

This bug makes it quite unfit for professional use (e.g. people writing
documents in offices).

Furthermore, if I want my business to start using Ubuntu, I would
definitely go for the LTS, so I would be able to stick with it for as
long as possible. I would not use the latest release for the same reason
many businesses do not use Windows Vista (I would assume it's still
buggy).

As for paid support, I do not believe anyone should pay for support for
a feature that is needed, by half the counties in the world.

Just a user's opinion.

[Bug 306845] [NEW] Faulty settings for IRMC-Sync members

2008-12-10 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10
The package is Multisync 0.90

I tried to sync a mobile phone using an IRMC-sync member.

When I finish all my settings, I hit the refresh button and I get the
following message:

error while initializing syncengine:Unable to parse config data: unable
to parse settings

The settings file include lots of useful instructions, which are of course
commented out using the !-- and -- tags.

Within the instructions however there are two dividers made by dashes,
like so...

---

The dashes are forbidden inside comments and this is what produces the
error message.

It would be better to change the dash divider with a star divider, like
so

**

or something that is not a dash anyway.

Then the data will be parsed ok.

[Bug 300645] [NEW] Cannot play encrypted DVD

2008-11-21 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
Public bug reported:

Whenever I try to play an encrypted DVD I get the following (bad)
results as follows:

- Totem - Gstreamer -- It seems that it is trying to start the DVD menu
(shows time 0/12 seconds), but never starts anything

or -- It just gives a black screen with no sound and the clock
shows 0/0

- VLC -- It shows the DVD menu alright, but when I select start movie I get
no picture and just choppy sound of poor quality.

-Mplayer -- the clock works as if the movie is actually played, but I
get no picture or sound.

Totem - Xine -- produces an error that says that I am trying to play an
encrypted dvd, without having libdvdcss installed (However libdvdcss2 is
actually installed)

The DVD is legally bought with Greek menus and subtitles. The movie is
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

The very same dvd plays great on another machine that has Hardy
installed.

On the same machine a created a virual machine using VirtualBox, with
Windows host and an Ubuntu Intrepid guest, cleanly installed and added
libdvdcss2 and ubuntu-restricted-extras. The problem persists.

Packages that are installed in all the cases I tried to play the DVD

- Libdvdcss2
- Ubuntu-restricted-extras
- Libdvdread3
- Libdvdnav4

I ran the various players using terminal and you may find attached what
came out.

The same thing happened to at least one more see the following thread in

[Bug 242067] Re: Gadmin-proftpd don't start testing Ubuntu intrepid 64-bit

2008-10-31 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
The

Could not launch menu item
Failed to execute child process su-to-root (No such file or directory)

problem is because you do not have the su-to-root application installed.
apparently the su-to-root allows you to run an application as super
user, similarly to sudo. If you add the -X option it is equivalent to
gksudo.

Just install the package menu using synaptic and this problem will be
solved.

I really do not know we this package is not already installed, or why
gksudo is not used in the first place.

I upgraded to Intrepid 32-bit from Hardy (32-bit), may be a clean
install would not have the problem.

Now that the su-to-root problem is behind us, the problem remains that
the GUI crashes.

It appears that the gadmin-proftpd version that is currently in the
repositories has a bug (see also
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gadmin-proftpd/+bug/276181).

Just install the newer version from here

http://debian.cs.binghamton.edu/debian/pool/main/g/gadmin-proftpd/

and the problem will be solved.

I do not know if it matters, but I completely removed the gproftpd
package (which apparently is outdated now), just to be on the safe side.

The package you have to download is:

gadmin-proftpd_0.3.5-2_i386.deb -- for 32-bit systems

or

gadmin-proftpd_0.3.5-2_amd64.deb -- for 64-bit systems

[Bug 196277] Re: [hardy] keyboard layout switching shortcut doesn't work after reboot

2008-07-24 Thread Angelos Vlassopoulos
Of course they marked it with a low priority (even though medium
severity).

If you read at the end of the bug report:

...official Fedora notes should mention that languages other than
English are not fully supported...

but that's not really the way to make an OS widely accepted, is it?

The world is far bigger than the English speaking countries, and very
diverse.
