[Bug 1563155] Re: No Application Data Found

2016-05-08 Thread Anthony S
The command in #21 fixed the issue for me.

While I agree `rm -r $x` is the obvious solution, I didn't know what $x
was supposed to be and this was the first mention I saw of it.

[Bug 358807] Re: battery monitor show only 0% off battery charge in ACER Aspire 5050-3284

2014-08-13 Thread Anthony S
I've had this issue for as long as I can remember, and it's still
present in 14.04. I have apparently the same battery as the bug
reporter. I'm running on an Acer Aspire 5050-5554.

I don't know if it's due to changes in acpi since 2009 or because of a
different symptom, but my output is slightly different, especially state
- remaining capacity.

$ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/alarm
alarm: unsupported

$ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/info
present: yes
design capacity: 4000 mAh
last full capacity: 64675 mAh
battery technology: rechargeable
design voltage: 11100 mV
design capacity warning: 300 mAh
design capacity low: 2587 mAh
cycle count: 0
capacity granularity 1: 32 mAh
capacity granularity 2: 32 mAh
model number:ZR3
serial number: 40696
battery type:LION
OEM info:SONY

$ cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: charged
present rate:0 mA
remaining capacity: 0 mAh
present voltage: 12193 mV

Fun fact: if I boot into Ubuntu with the AC adapter unplugged, I can run
off the battery for at least 10 minutes. But if I unplug AC while
Ubuntu is running, it goes into critical shutdown mode.

I've always assumed that the battery hardware controller was faulty.
However, the battery light will also turn yellow after the adapter's
been unplugged, which suggests to me that the hardware itself may have a
more accurate internal reading of the charge state.

[Bug 830702] [NEW] Some Pages Describe Gnome 3, not Unity

2011-08-21 Thread Anthony S
Public bug reported:

Starting here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/ubuntu-help/shell-overview.html#desktop

The following pages appear to be describing Gnome 3 behavior rather than
Unity.

https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/ubuntu-help/shell-terminology.html
The dash is the list of your favorite applications that is shown on the
left-hand side of the activities overview.

https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/ubuntu-help/shell-notifications.html
If an application or a system component wants to get your attention, a
notification will be shown at the bottom of the screen.

[Bug 746792] Re: dash categories dropdown menu needs to be improved

2011-05-04 Thread Anthony S
I propose a different solution to category selection.

http://i.imgur.com/SdLMT.jpg

The mockup at the URL above covers a bunch of different tweaks, but the
one I want to focus on is this.

If you're accessing your programs via mouse, it's difficult to look up a
specific category of applications. It takes 3 clicks to get to a list of all
applications. It takes four to five clicks to get a list of all applications in
a specific category. In contrast, the old Gnome 2 behavior allowed you to click
the Applications menu and then mouse-over
the rest of the way to the program you want. KDE 4's menu even allows you to
mouse-over most of the way to the application you're looking for, and offers
the keyword search on top of it.

My suggestion: once you navigate your way into the Applications lens,
have a vertical list of all application categories on the left side,
with an arrow indicating which category you're currently looking at.
Allow clicking or delayed mouse-over to switch categories. Get rid of
the drop-down in the search box.

[Bug 761155] Re: [launcher] Workspace Switcher icon cannot be moved

2011-04-26 Thread Anthony S
I'd have no problem with the Workspace switcher being locked in
position, but I would prefer its location be one of the following:

1. The very top.
2. Just above (or just below) the Trash.

I feel that either of those locations would be better for muscle memory,
because its current position in the middle of the bar, varying depending
on how many applications are open, can be cumbersome in that regard.

[Bug 293371] [NEW] Display Wakes Up When Power is Unplugged

2008-11-03 Thread Anthony S
Public bug reported:

When the power switches to battery after the display has gone to sleep,
the display turns back on. Specifically, the backlight turns on.

Turning on the monitor's backlight seems like an odd thing to do when
the primary power source has been removed from the computer. Just
sayin'.

[Bug 247135] Re: Firefox 3 wont load http://www.lustosa.com.br/, IE will

2008-07-10 Thread Anthony S. Hall
Rob:

I'm glad to hear that you managed to resolve the issue. It seems the
problem may come from a conflict of having both flash and gnash
installed, or as you say gnash was unable to handle the file. Since we
now know that the problem lies with on of those two and not as much the
Firefox software package, I'm going to go ahead and invalidate the bug.

If you'd like to continue to investigate in some spare time and file a
new bug with gnash/flash, I will be more than happy to attempt to gather
as much information as possible and try to confirm the bug to help it
get squashed. Feel free to contact me at anytime.

[Bug 9870] Re: Better spam filtering for evolution

2007-09-21 Thread Anthony S
I believe the fix for this has been released with Gnome 2.20:

http://www.gnome.org/start/2.20/notes/en/index.html#rnusers-email-and-
calendar

Allows you to choose the Spam plugin (SpamAssassin or BogoFilter) via
its preferences. And SpamAssassin will now actually learn when you mark
emails as Junk or Not Junk.

Can someone with Gutsy please verify?

[Bug 22842] Re: Many programs misbehave when running out of disk space

2007-09-13 Thread Anthony S
What is the progress on this bug?

Detection of sufficient disk space should be handled by the kernel. If
any program attempts to write a file that there isn't enough space for,
the kernel should pass an error code back to the program, and the
program should react accordingly.

Since this effects virtually every program running in Linux, perhaps the
details should be fleshed out more precisely in a blueprint. A quick search
found one of relevance that needs some guidance:

[Bug 118745] Re: Font sizes in Gutsy are vulnerable to bad X.org DPI detection

2007-08-15 Thread Anthony S
Pardon my curiosity, but what is the significance of the OS knowing the
PPI of the screen? Consider the following scenarios:

Screen #1 is an independent monitor: a 19 LCD with native 1280x1024
resolution. The PPI is approx. 85. The user sits between 3 and 5 feet
away from this screen.

Screen #2 is a laptop panel: a 14.1 LCD with native 1280x800
resolution. The PPI is approx. 105. The user sits between 1 and 2 feet
away from this screen.

When the GUI scales everything by the DPI of the monitor, it will scale
everything according to what the real size of the graphics should be.
This means that Screen #1 will display more information on it than
Screen #2, regardless of resolution. However, the smaller size of the
graphics on Screen #1 causes the user to strain at his usual sitting
distance from the monitor, while the relatively large graphics on Screen
#2 suffocate him with their sheer size.

I guess what I'm asking is, wouldn't it make more sense to have a GUI
scaling tool that lets you resize all graphics (independent of
resolution) rather than autosize everything according to the monitor's
PPI?

Notes that may help determine what the importance should be set to:
- This bug prevents me from working with a particular database essential to my
job.
- OpenOffice.org is part of the base Feisty Fawn distro
- A search of the repositories does not reveal any other applications that

[Bug 131565] OpenOffice.org Base: Misreads . in Database Names

2007-08-10 Thread Anthony S
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-base

This bug is recreated when using FreeTDS to connect to an SQL Server
database with dots in its name.

In /etc/odbc.ini:
[some_definition]
Driver  = FreeTDS
Description = ODBC connection via FreeTDS
Trace   = No
Servername  = some_TDS_definition
Database= dev.servername.com

The name of the hypothetical database is dev.servername.com.
Regarding this issue, efforts to contain the database name in square
brackets [] and quotes invalidate the connection.

Using OpenOffice.org Base, we connect using the some_definition ODBC
entry. The tables are loaded in under the following branches:

dev
- servername
- - com.dbo.table1
- - com.dbo.table2

That is part one of the bug. Part 2 is if we try to right-click one of
the tables and open them, it returns an error. Further investigation
shows us the query that is used:

SELECT * FROM dev.servername.com.dbo.table1

The appropriate way to do this in SQL Server would be to write:

SELECT * FROM [dev.servername.com].[dbo].[table1]

Let me know if you need more information.
