[Bug 1868551] Re: Intel GPU Hangs : random screen freezing w/ Ubuntu 20.04 (Linux 5.4) i915_active_acquire

2020-05-01 Thread Antony Jones
Tried the kernel by @lordbaco in #33 and it doesn't improve anything,
just in case it's useful.

My machine freezes up after a few hours, usually at a point where the
fans start to spin up under load. 2-3 times a day.

The symptoms are that the cursor starts to lag, massively, and the whole
machine gets less and less responsive until it freezes.

I didn't have any luck with the kernel in #40 as it wouldn't boot for
me. If you have any pointers to booting with it then I'll happily try.

I'm not seeing the error messages mentioned by anybody else in this
thread.

Ronan Mooney's workaround worked for me.

Also Dell XPS 13. Sounds like this is a machine specific issue.

Been affected by this since my fresh 17.10 install (not an upgrade, but
a clean install).

The install was desktop amd64 iso, with no customisations at all, I'm
surprised that this package is missing.

[Bug 1612241] Re: Display blinking on MST Dual Monitors

2016-08-25 Thread Antony Jones
This problem appears to be getting worse. The displays are blinking a
lot more regularly now, and sometimes both at the same time.

Furthermore, the secondary monitor (MST 1.0) which is configured as my
secondary screen, will, once per day, blink off, and when it comes back
on, the lower 3/4 of the screen is interlaced - i.e. missing every other
line. The top 1/4 displays fine, but the picture is offset somewhat, so
it's displaying the incorrect part of the screen there.

I have to turn the display off in settings, then turn it back on, and
then rearrange my monitor layout (they become swapped when this happens)
in order to recover it.

[Bug 1612241] [NEW] Display blinking on MST Dual Monitors

2016-08-11 Thread Antony Jones
Public bug reported:

I have two Dell U2715H monitors, one running in MST 2.0 mode, one
running in MST 1.0 mode (the terminator).

My laptop is plugged via mini display port into the MST 2.0 enabled
monitor. The MST 1.0 monitor is daisychained from displayport out on the
MST 2.0 monitor, to the displayport in on the MST 1.0 monitor.

I'm using the default cabling provided with the monitors.
I am running Ubuntu 16.04
The laptop is a Dell XPS 13 9333 - it is plugged into the mains.
Cables are not loose.

The setup works almost without issue, but:

Actual Result:
1. The monitors take it in turns to blink once - off, then back on, for 4
seconds at a time, seemingly randomly.
2. Any given monitor often blinks off, 4 seconds, then on when pressing play on
a youtube video
3. Any given monitor usually blinks off, 4 seconds, then on when dragging a
window from the other monitor, onto it.

Expected result:
Monitors should be constantly on, at all times.

[Bug 500069] Re: USB file transfer causes system freezes; ops take hours instead of minutes

2013-03-31 Thread Antony Jones
This is the single most infuriating bug that I have ever seen in Ubuntu
and I've been struggling with it for about 3 years now (before that
there was no problem, so anybody saying large files weren't invented
back then, is talking crap).

How are we supposed to send log files and output for something which
doesn't create either? This bug is simple to reproduce. Copy a 3gb file
to a USB stick which uses FAT32 - any HD movie is a good candidate.

If there is a developer who is able or willing to fix this I will
happily send them a USB stick and a file for them to reproduce the
problem to their hearts content, if only this stupid problem would be
fixed.

[Bug 1106148] [NEW] Rf-Kill sticks on after using hardware switch

2013-01-26 Thread Antony Jones
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading (from 11.04 to 12.04) as a fresh install, I am
experiencing the following issue.

If I switch the hardware switch of my wifi off, I can never turn it back
on. I constantly get the message 'RF-Kill: Disabled by hardware switch'
or similar.

After a lot of google searching, the following script works to fix the
issue:

rmmod -f iwlwifi
rfkill unblock all
modprobe iwlwifi

Although, this isn't really a good solution every time I want to turn
the WiFi off, or do it accidentally since the switch is in an awkward
place.

[Bug 877256] Re: Can't open .war format since Oneiric (java)

2011-11-14 Thread Antony Jones
Same problem here. This is absolutely fundamental to my day job, and is
something I took for granted.

As an aside, File Roller is great for detecting and opening all sorts of
files even if they don't have a logical (i.e. a known archive format)
extension. It seems this functionality has been sadly lost.

Definitely a regression which needs fixing asap, as Ubuntu is used
primarily as a development platform by many.

[Bug 589520] Re: [KM400]Haven't been able to execute normal gnome login since 10.04 installation; screen blanks then returns to login screen

2010-07-26 Thread Antony Jones
This is also affecting my Dell Mini 1010 - the one with the horrendous
gma500/poulsbo chipset.

The suggested workaround doesn't work, moving .compiz, .gnome2 or
.config or .dbus out of the way does not help, but I can log in under
failsafe gnome without issue.

Completely stumped.

I am seeing the exact same in my /var/log/syslog/ as the bug author sees
in the original bug report, i.e. this part:

Jun 4 13:15:36 saltcreek gdm-simple-greeter[2530]: Gtk-WARNING:
/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.20.0/gtk/gtkwidget.c:5636: widget not within a GtkWindow
Jun 4 13:15:39 saltcreek gdm-session-worker[2532]: GLib-GObject-CRITICAL:
g_value_get_boolean: assertion `G_VALUE_HOLDS_BOOLEAN (value)' failed

Could this be a GTK bug? It's a real blocker as I really can't afford to
reinstall right now, and I can only assume I'm not the only one.

[Bug 361993] Re: MAPI - can't send mails to addresses on same server

2010-02-09 Thread Antony Jones
This bug makes using exchange mail on Linux impossible which means that
we can't use Linux in a corporate environment. I'm confused as to why
this is considered low priority.

[Bug 488712] Re: package samba-common 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.1 failed to install/upgrade:

2009-11-26 Thread Antony Jones
This was because I had deleted smb.conf to make some other product work.

The solution as suggested by aptitude was:

  sudo cp /usr/share/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf
  sudo dpkg --configure -a

However this did moderately break my upgrade so I suggest that a more
robust way of dealing with this might be implemented?

[Bug 452316] [NEW] Xorg randomly crashes to shell with multicoloured box on text-console and doesn't restart

2009-10-15 Thread Antony Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Usually it's when I click an item in my taskbar (Which is at the top of
my second monitor).

I have dual widescreen, Dell. THe card is an ATi Radeon HD 2400 XT

Today it did it when my machine was under heavy load and I clicked
calendar.

It wont reload X automatically, I have to reboot.

This has happened to me for maybe 1 year now, it stopped 5 months ago,
for 3 months, and is now back. It is happening every single day now.

The screens drop to the text display, show a big multicoloured box, then
flash back to the information which was on my console before GDM started
up.

I hate to me too this bug but I agree, it is not a duplicate of
#348752.

Msn works for me, about once per month in Empathy. Most of the time,
even after reconfiguring the package as listed above, and after 'killall
telepathy-butterfly, I just get a dropdown with Network Error in my
contact list.

This hasn't worked for about 8 months now, so I'd say it's pretty
important.

[Bug 347830] [NEW] Gnome CPU Monitor Applet Second CPU has blank icon

2009-03-24 Thread Antony Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

Description:Ubuntu 8.10
Release:8.10

anto...@evoke:~$ apt-cache policy gnome-applets

  Version table:
 *** 2.24.1-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I have a dual core CPU in my computer (Core 2 Duo), and as a result I
have two CPU Frequency applets in my gnome panel.

As shown in the attachment, recently, the second one has shown a blank
grey square rather than the icon it used to. The applets are on a gnome
bar on my second monitor of my wide desktop.

This could be fixed by either:

Making CPU Frequency Scaling Applet show a dual core cpu as two
cpus/bars automatically. This is good for quad core cpus too as you can
imagine.

Fixing it so that you can have multiple instances of this applet, one
per core/cpu.

[Bug 191656] Re: postrm script fails

2008-07-15 Thread Antony Jones
Here's how I have to manually remove db2exc 9.5 from gutsy (and when I
use it with hardy too) - I can't believe i'm still having problems with
this.

sudo aptitude remove db2exc
(package cannot be removed, it is broken)
sudo vim /var/lib/dpkg/info/db2exc.postrm

comment out the following lines as shown:

# rm $instDir/cfg/installcopy.cfg /dev/null 21
# rm $instDir/default.env /dev/null 21
# rm $instDir/profiles.reg /dev/null 21
# rmdir $instDir/cfg /dev/null 21
# rmdir $instDir /dev/null 21
# rmdir /opt/ibm/db2exc /dev/null 21

#/usr/sbin/update-rc.d -f db2 remove /dev/null 21
# rm /etc/init.d/db2 /dev/null 21

then...

sudo aptitude remove db2exc

(now it works). Now delete the db2inst1, dasadm1, and db2fenc1 users
from /home and 'userdel' them.

Then reinstall at your leisure.

What a pain!

[Bug 245102] [NEW] Corrupt screen after wake up

2008-07-03 Thread Antony Jones
Public bug reported:

I have my computer set to lock the screen after 10 minutes of
inactivity. A while after that it turns off the display.

Since 3 weeks ago, when I leave it for extended periods, i.e. I go to
sleep, on moving the mouse to turn the screen back on and get the unlock
dialog, the screen is corrupted, and is in a series of thin, horizontal
strips each offset from the one above (like wooden floorboards).

It's irrecoverable from this state, and hitting ctrl+alt+backspace to
restart X makes it exit X, and hang, displaying only the results of the
init scripts which run on startup (i.e. whatever is on the display
before Xorg starts).

My System:
Ubuntu 8.04
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400]
(rev b2)
Abit KX333R Motherboard

Beryl is not enabled, but the restricted driver for Xorg is enabled so
that I get accelerated graphics.

The only odd thing in Xorg log is this line:

(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not
found)

But it may not be related, and is probably invalid, because earlier on
it says:

(II) LoadModule: glx
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so
(II) Module glx: vendor=NVIDIA Corporation

2000+ bizzarely installed a *-386 kernel. I got annoyed because there
are no virtualization kernel modules for *-386 so I installed generic,
and now everything works fine.

It appears that *-generic is actually the recommended kernel and *-386
is only for really old hardware like 386/486 and some early pentiums.

[Bug 189538] Re: db2 update to version 9.5 crashes existing installation

2008-05-29 Thread Antony Jones
Okay I finally fixed it. How I did it was this:

edited /var/dpkg/info/db2exc.prerm

commented out the line:

dasUser=$instDir/instance/daslist

then ran dpkg -r db2exc

I ran the daslist command myself a few times but there was no output. No
idea why it was failing, but it was. The scripts for removing db2 need
to be a lot less fragile I think.

[Bug 191656] Re: postrm script fails

2008-05-16 Thread Antony Jones
This is still a problem. I have to use 9.2 instead of the new 9.5 - they
are very, very different databases.

I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 and bang, stuck with an unremovable
db2exc package... no idea how to remove it. Now my system is virtually
unusable because it has prevented lots of other upgrades.

[Bug 189538] Re: db2 update to version 9.5 crashes existing installation

2008-05-16 Thread Antony Jones
This problem has plagued me before and now - upgrading to Ubuntu 8.04
has done it again!

db2exc - can't remove it or install it. I'm using 9.2 version because
db2exc 9.5 is VERY, VERY different than 9.2 and is innapropriate for my
work.

Anyway it's killed my upgrade and now my laptop is ruined (again) - i'm
having to manually hack stuff to remove db2exc. What a painful
experience!

[Bug 189538] Re: db2 update to version 9.5 crashes existing installation

2008-02-06 Thread Antony Jones
I would like to agree that this is a very serious problem.

I use db2 for work and have just encountered (after upgrading to 9.5 as
suggested by ubuntu update) all my existing databases not working, I
can't reinstall, I can't remove, I'm completely stuck now.

Preparing to replace db2exc 9.5.0-1gutsy1 (using
.../db2exc_9.5.0-1gutsy1_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement db2exc ...
dpkg: warning - old post-removal script returned error exit status 1
dpkg - trying script from the new package instead ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/db2exc_9.5.0-1gutsy1_i386.deb

Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/db2exc_9.5.0-1gutsy1_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I would like to revert back to 9.1.2 or even stick with 9.5, but instead
I'm stuck completely...

Of course I can't, because of the errors listed above. I'd love to use

[Bug 160286] Server connections should use : not /

2007-11-05 Thread Antony Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xchat

This is purely an enhancement which I feel will improve the consistency
of the operating system which XChat is running upon.

Servers are configured as:

servername/port

whereas 99% of other applications use:

servername:port

I feel that in consistency terms, this is an unnecessary deviation from
the 'norm' which is both confusing for new users, and serves no purpose
technically. It wrecks the whole POSIX way in which the output of one
command can be piped to the next, for instance it would make difficult
populating a server list file from the command line.

[Bug 78037] Re: rt2500 wifi cards need to be downed for changing essid

2007-10-29 Thread Antony Jones
I too would like to confirm this bug and raise it's prio a little
higher.

I have a Digitus DN-7006GR wireless card. It is not a DN-7006-RA!

% lspci | grep Ra
00:08.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2500 802.11g Cardbus/mini-PCI (rev 01)

It is based on the rt2500 chipset.

I am using Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon (7.10).

The card works fine, except for two things:
. NetworkManager finds it, shows signal strength, shows wireless networks, and
attempts to connect. It does not connect however.
. Manual config (System - Administration - Network) or similar via the
console works fine, except it shows signal strength as 0.

This is a common chipset and really needs to be fixed by now. It seems
the correct code could be obtained by borrowing bits from each method!
