[Bug 726978] Re: Space bar key should always trigger play/pause, like in all other media players
In spotify, the search text box loses focus when you switch out of the app. Interesting idea. Where does it move the focus to? 'Jakob's Law of the Web User Experience states that users spend most of their time on other websites. ... Right, and desktop app users spend most of their time using other apps on the same platform - NOT other music apps. Thus this argument is just as easily applied to consistency with the platform as with players in general. ...see which players are the most popular on the market, and...mimic their usual behaviour unless there is a sound reasoning not to. Why not research this then, if this is such an important feature to you? That's honestly my biggest issue with how your report is going so far - you state your opinion a lot, but have not actually done significant work towards making it happen yet. If you care about it that much, work to make it better - it is open source, after all. Otherwise, shut up and let us work as we see fit - we already know what your opinion is, hearing it yet again without anything new to show isn't going to change our minds. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/726978 Title: Space bar key should always trigger play/pause, like in all other media players To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/exaile/+bug/726978/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 726978] Re: Space bar key should always trigger play/pause, like in all other media players
I was not aware you do not welcome critical discussion about reasoning behind design decisions. It didn't sound like a critical discussion to me - it sounded like you pulling more random thoughts about why your opinion is right out of thin air. There was a LOT of text, and not a lot of it was directly relevant to solving the issue at hand. Being concise and to the point is generally more effective than writing a 700 word essay in a comment. :) Regardless of your intention, my point remains - both parties here have already made it clear what their opinions are, so until something is actually /done/, rehashing these ideas more is unlikely to be helpful. I warmly welcome your thoughts about the kind of research you would expect to get done on a question like this. - A list of the 'most popular' music players that would be relevant to this discussion. I think we should concentrate on linux-based ones but it may be worth looking at some examples from windows and mac as well. - For each of these players, examine: -- What sort of shortcuts are set for playback controls when the window is focused. i.e. what keys are used, how are they sensitive to context, and how do they deal with interactions with other widgets like textboxes that may already have defined behaviors for them. -- Whether these bindings override default behaviors or best practices on the platform/toolkit the player utilizes, and how the loss of functionality, if any, is compensated for, if at all. -- How the player addresses or fails to address any usability/accessibility concerns that arise from such bindings and/or overrides. That should give us an idea of usual behavior, as you put it, along with any potential problems that might come up and their solutions. This still doesn't address the coding side of things - unless there's some way to do this in code without having to manually attach bindings or exceptions to bindings everywhere, then the code maintenance burden would be too great to implement it regardless of common practice. I don't think this is likely to be the case though, since Banshee appears to implement space as play/pause in the manner you prescribe. Maybe I'll take a look at their code and see what they had to do to make it work right.

As mathbr said, this isn't something that's trivial to do in GTK+. Additionally, the space key is used by GTK+ to activate widgets by default, so users who are used to that function might be confused if we start overriding this behavior. Furthermore, since text entries are part the the UI and need to be able to absorb spaces for their own functionality to work, it wouldn't be guaranteed to pause when you switch back anyway! The action of space is ALWAYS going to be context- sensitive to one degree or another. I do agree that it's a usability issue, and we should at least handle this for the common case where the focus is in the playlist. I'm not certain that it makes sense or is feasible to do it everywhere else, which is why I marked this as Opinion.
[Bug 530765] Re: Skip non-existent tracks and ask to remove them
Charlie, I AM exaile's upstream. Please respect my changes. This is a feature that has been requested before, and the short answer is that to handle all the edge cases right requires more information than the playback engine currently has available to it, so it would require substantial changes to support, and there are more-important issues to deal with. IMO, that problem fits the description of the Opinion status perfectly. ** Changed in: exaile Status: Invalid = Opinion -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/530765 Title: Skip non-existent tracks and ask to remove them To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/exaile/+bug/530765/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 588858] Re: Add optional support of indicator applet
Regarding the track ID, actually it should not be the URI at all. I actually suggest using '/org/exaile/trackid/' + str(hash(track)). Actually, since Track objects in Exaile are unique per-uri, that's effectively the same as just using the uri outright. The proper way to do this would be to take advantage of playlists in trunk using MetadataLists and storing a unique id in mpris_track_id or something for each track. I don't think the MetadataList api is exposed on Playlist itself yet but that's easy enough to fix. This would require a fair bit of extra code though, so for now I'm in favor of just not supporting the TrackList section of the MPRIS api. I don't have any objection to supporting a minimal MPRIS2 in mainline alongside our current dbus api - it's a pretty small amount of extra code and opens a lot of possibilities for integration with other apps. Extra MPRIS2 features like TrackList can either be added later when we figure out a good way to do them, or can be added onto the core via plugins. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/588858 Title: Add optional support of indicator applet -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 588858] Re: Add optional support of indicator applet
I don't think exaile exposes the location in its api so I set the cover to the nocover image in the mean time. That's because it is not guaranteed that the cover will HAVE a location in the filesystem. For example, when the cover is embedded in the file's tags, it is just loaded directly from the tags instead of being copied to somewhere on the filesystem. As a workaround for this, I suggest creating a temporary cover file in /tmp when the cover is requested and using that path instead.

[Bug 135956] Re: cuesheet support
Johannes - well, .cue files specify the file names they are associated with in themselves, so as long as we parse any .cue files in a directory first so we know which 'real' files to ignore, there shouldn't be any need to assume. I think the file:///path.cue#01 uri syntax makes more sense than the time-based one. It much more clear exactly which track is being referred to, and the overhead of re-parsing the .cue should be minimal. (or we can just store cue offsets and such in special internal tags) As for tag editing at an album level, we could edit it across all tracks in the album and just use a gtk.InfoBar to warn users that it will affect more than the selected track. -- cuesheet support https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/135956 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 528567] Re: Ubuntu One Music Store plugin
Ugh, so this just embeds a browser with the store in Exaile and adds some hooks to make playback integrate, basically? That's never really ever going to fit well in Exaile's UI, it's not like Rythmbox where we have almost the entire window open for that. We need a proper music store API so we can write an interface that will fit into Exaile correctly. This is just plain unusable as it stands, especially on smaller monitors. Of course that's more a problem with Ubuntu One Music Store itself, not this plugin. For the plugin specifically: - I'd prefer it be named ubuntuonemusicstore or something more descriptive like that. umusicstore doesn't tell you anything about what the 'u' means. - Why are the preview-mp3, download-finished, and url-loaded signals passed on basically unchanged? Would it not be better to just connect to the original source of these signals and adjust the callbacks appropriately? And to answer your questions: After you listen to a preview more than once, Exaile will start to play your current playlist. - This is a limitation of the playback system, as its not designed to handle anything beyond playlists at the moment. We can expand the player API to add what is needed for this later. (from irc/source) How I can update the collection list after I have added an track with exaile.collection.add() - Well, you could do it via the collection panel's load_tree() method, but really we should just adjust CollectionPanel so that it auto-refreshes for collection memberships changes in addition to Track metadata changes. -- Ubuntu One Music Store plugin https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/528567 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 460535] Re: Unable to play any but the first track of CD
Alright, look like this is a bug in gstreamer. If i manually specify the device for cdiocddasrc, it always plays the first track. If I don't specify a device, it will play the correct track. Unfortunately, this means there really isn't anything we in Exaile can do to work around this, it has to be fixed in gstreamer itself. [Bug 460535] Re: Unable to play any but the first track of CD
Hm, interesting. At first glance, it could be a bug in gio/gvfs, which we only just now are experiencing because gstreamer used to always use cdiocddasrc for cdda:// uris instead of gio/gvfs. [Bug 309394] Re: Alphabetic order of non-English tags
Randoms additions and removals were trailing spaces that I removed out of habit. that should be done in separate patches in the future. mixing corrections in one patch is a really good way to not get your patch included. :) Comparisons are made using strcoll and strxfrm, and I believe it should work correctly with japanese (as long as your locale is set to japanese) But only if the locale is set? That's not ideal, since people from one locale are fairly likely to have tracks from other locales in their list. (eg. anime fans are likely to have Japanese music.) We need something that orders it correctly independent of current locale, if at all possible. [Bug 204805] Re: mplayer and vlc causes backlight to go to full brightness
I also have this issue, on a Thinkpad T60 with Intel X3100 graphics. It happens with vlc, mplayer, and some games as well. I can additionally confirm that 'xset -dpms' also exhibits this behaviour, indicating that this issue resides in X's treatment of DPMS. -- mplayer and vlc causes backlight to go to full brightness https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/204805 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 177492] Re: EXA is balls-achingly slow
jhwilliams: on my 965, EXA is on by default with the greedy tweak, video uses XV with comparable CPU use to prior ubuntu versions. Everything works as well or better than it did in gutsy, as far as I can tell. to those having trouble with dual monitors: I'd like to point out that the 'Screen Resolution' (in System-Preferences) tool in hardy actually does a decent job of managing dual screens on xrandr1.2-compliant drivers like intel, though to get extended mode you still need to add a 'Virtual' line in xorg.conf. -- EXA is balls-achingly slow https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/177492 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
