[Bug 1714322] Re: segfault editing network connection in Lubuntu Next 17.10 Beta1

2017-08-31 Thread Artemgy
This prevents the user from adding a wireless connection through the
GUI.

WORKAROUND: nmcli -ask con up MYSSID

example:

# check device is active
nmcli dev
# look for connections
nmcli con

# enter PSK where MYSSID is the connection name from above
nmcli -ask con up MYSSID

# Now recheck wireless
nmcli con
nmcli dev
# check IP address is configured
ip addr
# test connection
ping 8.8.8.8

Cannot use panel interface to add wireless connection

* on fresh install of Lubuntu Next 17.10 Beta1 i386 (build 20170831)
* complete the installation and reboot into new OS
* Use Panel Applet to view Network Connections or execute command:

nm-connection-editor

* Choose the connection for the wireless access point you wish to connect to
* click edit

[Bug 1510731] Re: Can't use crypto in manual disk setup Kubuntu 15.10

2017-08-08 Thread Artemgy
The fact that 1523194 has been assigned to partman-crypto indicates the
underlying cause _could_ be there.

However the ubiquity-frontend-gtk does NOT suffer the symptoms that
ubiquity-frontend-kde does. Therefore I wonder if ubiquity-frontend-gtk
has been modified to accommodate, and I hope the bug you raised in the
KDE tracker gets some traction so that ubiquity-frontend-kde can also be
made to work around the underlying issue.

[Bug 1510731] Re: Can't use crypto in manual disk setup Kubuntu 15.10

2017-08-02 Thread Artemgy
I confirm this bug exists in Lubuntu Next 17.10 amd64, which derives its
Ubiquity from Kubuntu.

I can also confirm that the bug did NOT exist in Lubuntu installs 15.10,
16.04, 16.10 all amd64, which is derived from the main Ubuntu Ubiquity.

My workaround was to
1) manually create, format and open the physical volume for encryption
2) launch Ubiquity, and in Manual disk layout choose the /dev/mapper/sdaX_crypt
volume as / (root) without formatting
3) complete the installation but choose Continue Testing
4) chroot into target, create crypttab and check fstab, update-initramfs

for step-by-step instructions see

[Bug 1705845] [NEW] Installer fails with volume encryption

2017-07-22 Thread Artemgy
Public bug reported:

Choosing "physical volume for encryption" makes the installer GUI fail, using
Lubuntu Next artful Alpha 1 image:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu-next/releases/artful/alpha-1/artful-desktop-amd64.iso

## Steps to reproduce

sudo swapoff -a # avoid bug with 'unsafe swap'
cat /proc/swaps
ubiquity &

* [Continue] through Welcome and Wireless to Disk
* choose "Manual" then [Continue]
- NB: this is reinstalling over existing partitions from a previous install
* select swap partition - [Change] - "do not use parititon"
- also to avoid bug with 'unsafe swap'
* boot partition - change - "Ext4" - check format - "/boot"
* main partition - change - "physical volume for encryption"
* click Install

This does NOTHING - the Install button just deselects itself when you
click it!

## attempt to change options to make Install button work...

This might be a secondary issue.

* reselect main partition - [Change]

Installer Crashed

Public bug reported:

Release: Ubuntu 16.10
Package: qgit
Version: 2.6-1

When selecting files to include in a Commit, files are NOT excluded
based on the Global Excludes list

## Steps to reproduce

* Create a global ignore file as per https://help.github.com/articles
/ignoring-files/

$ cat >$HOME/.gitignore_global <> ./.git/info/exclude

Now Open QGit / Edit / Commit and you will see you files are ignored
correctly

## Previous Research

I checked the launchpad bugs [https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qgit/]
the debian package bugs
[https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?pkg=qgit]
and upstream issues tracker [http://libre.tibirna.org/projects/qgit/issues]
but could not find anything similar mentioned there.

[Bug 1508092] [NEW] no sound from speakers, only headphones

2015-10-20 Thread Artemgy
Public bug reported:

Sound comes out of the headphones when I insert the jack, but does NOT
come out of the speakers when I unplug it. This includes sound from any
source, including aplay.

This is a newly installed Lubuntu daily build (Lubuntu 15.10 "Wily
Werewolf" - Alpha i386 20151017.1). If I go back to running from the
Live USB install media, the sound works fine from the speakers OR the
headphones, as expected.

As suggested by https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure
I have tried:
* killing and reloading pulseaudio and alsa-mixer
* purging (.config/) .pulse/ then killing/reloading and rebooting
* installing and reinstalling pavucontrol linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
libasound2

In the installed version I notice that in Volume Control (pavucontrol)
the output switches automatically between headphones and speaker when
the jack is plugged and unplugged - as one would expect - and in
alsamixer I can see the inactive device being muted automatically.
However the speaker never issues any sound :( On the contrary in the
live usb I notice that alsamixer leaves both outputs active (unmuted)
and simply relies on the microswitch in the headphone jack to control
whether the speaker can be heard or not.

For reference I past the output of the FAILING test case's alsa-info.sh
below and attach the output of the WORKING test case's alsa-info.sh

[Bug 1377279] Re: dmesg fills with speaker allocation warnings

2015-01-04 Thread Artemgy
I have now tested a new version of the upstream kernel where this issue
NO LONGER occurs:

cat /proc/version
Linux version 3.19.0-031900rc2-generic (apw@tangerine) (gcc version 4.6.3
(Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.3-1ubuntu5) ) #201412290135 SMP Mon Dec 29 01:36:54 UTC 2014

Therefore I suggest there is no value to reporting this upstream. Thanks

[Bug 1375173] Re: [Acer AO722] suspend/resume failure

2014-10-06 Thread Artemgy
Although I do recall suspend issues on this hardware with 14.04, I no
longer have any installations prior to 14.10 on which to test. Therefore
I am not sure if I can help with regression. However I would be happy to
assist with parsing the scope down to determine if there are driver
fixes that could resolve this issue 100% of the time on 14.10.

Christoper (or colleagues), could you please advise where I can find
instructions to help me do this. Thanks, Artemgy

[Bug 1377279] [NEW] dmesg fills with speaker allocation warnings

2014-10-03 Thread Artemgy
Public bug reported:

This is an issue with the driver message log filling with warnings, and
NOT an actual issue with the hardware or software functionality. Sound
on this system works as expected, but dmesg becomes cluttered with log
information that does not appear of significant value, considering the
frequency and repetition of the warnings.

The following message appears, repeated on multiple consecutive lines:
sound hdaudioC0D0: HDMI ATI/AMD: no speaker allocation for ELD and on
some occasions is accompanied by an entry stating:
[drm:dce4_afmt_write_speaker_allocation] *ERROR* Couldn't read Speaker
Allocation Data Block: 0

The system in question is a laptop with an external monitor connected
over HDMI. It has been freshly built with Lubuntu 14.10 Beta 2, and the
same issue also occurs when using testing the mainline kernel
3.17.0-031700rc7.201409281835.

The occasions on which this issue (the repeated warnings) occurs under strict
testing conditions include:
* Using the Monitor Preferences (LXRandR) to turn OFF and ON the external
monitor (approx 10 warnings for each action)
* Putting the system into the suspend power mode and subsequently resuming
(approx 30 warnings)

No warnings occur when:
* unplugging or plugging the HDMI cable
* locking and unlocking the lightdm desktop

I have observed occasions where the warnings are written many, many
hundreds of times, on an almost continuous basis, but I have not been
able to reproduce this behavior in controlled circumstances.

[Bug 1375173] [NEW] [Acer AO722] suspend/resume failure

2014-09-29 Thread Artemgy
Public bug reported:

Lubuntu 14.10 Beta 2 newly installed
* Close laptop lid to put system into suspend mode and power indicator changes
from blue to slow flashing orange, indicating that hardware has entered suspend
mode.
* Reopen laptop lid and press a key to wake up, power indicator changes back to
steady blue indicating that system is coming back up into full power state.

HOWEVER screen remains completely blank (no backlight) and system
appears totally unresponsive (although difficult to tell with no
screen).

* Attempted to use hardware function keys to activate screen - nothing.
* Tried ALT-CTRL-F1 then ALT-CTRL-F7 to wake up X, still no display.
* Attempted single press of power button to initiate Shutdown - no respone
The only way to procede was to hold the power button for four seconds to kill
power and start cold

[Bug 1372116] [NEW] xorg freezes mouse and consumes cpu

2014-09-21 Thread Artemgy
Public bug reported:

Freshly built Lubuntu Desktop amd64 14.10 beta 1 (20140826.1)
Hardware spec from hardinfo - https://gist.github.com/74e638f3a308f6aaef53

When using more memory on system (e.g. multiple apps or many browser
tabs) the system will freeze for 10 seconds to over a minute, with the
mouse cursor not moving at all, and no screen updates. When it finally
responds I see cpu spikes in xorg process with lxtask showing over 100%!
Shutting down applications or tabs to reduce memory load seems to make
the issue go away, but trying to multitask renders system practically
unusable.

[Bug 975152] Re: Execute in terminal not working

2014-07-03 Thread artemgy
Thanks for your research, Hamish. I can confirm that your DIY patch
works around the main issue, providing I sudo it...

sudo sed -i -e 's|lxsession-default-terminal %s|x-terminal-emulator -e %s|' \
   /etc/xdg/lubuntu/libfm/libfm.conf ;
