This problem is also being exhibited on a Dell Latitude X300 laptop (Intel 855GM chipset), standard 10.04 LTS release crashes in GUI applications after coaxing it to boot with i915.modeset=0 and annoyingly I can't run most 12.04 releases due to no PAE support. Would much rather have Gnome 2 10.04 than Lubuntu :(
