[Bug 1781415] [NEW] Reporting bugs against documentation is annoying.

2018-07-12 Thread Ben Pearre
Public bug reported:

I found an error in documentation. I clicked the "file a bug" link. It
takes me here, requires me to log in, shows me a bunch of irrelevant
rubbish, and generally makes reporting the bug a huge hassle. Raising
the barrier to reporting bugs makes developers' lives easier, but leads
to an inferior product.

Expected behaviour: allow me to file a bug against a page of the
documentation.

Observed behaviour: here I am. Aside from the hassle, I don't think that
this report is even going to tell you what page I'm reporting a bug
against, is it? If it does, I'll tell you the bug :)

Suggested fix: make it straightforward to file bugs against
documentation.

[Bug 1268370] [NEW] When de-iconifying a window, all windows are shifted northwest

2014-01-12 Thread Ben Pearre
Public bug reported:

With sawfish 1.5.3-2.1ubuntu1, iconifying a window works fine, but using
lxpanel's window list to de-iconify results in all windows in all
virtual desktops shifting up and to the left by the height of the

[Bug 1186636] [NEW] about:permissions doesn't remember changes

2013-06-01 Thread Ben Pearre
Public bug reported:

I went to about:config and changed plugins.click_to_play to true, as
instructed at e.g. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/956759

Now I'd like youtube to play without clicking. I go to
about:permissions, find youtube.com and www.youtube.com, and set Plugins
to Allow. Now go to youtube, and ask it to show me something. It
sits there, waiting for me to click on the player window as instructed
by plugins.click_to_play. Huh? Go back to about:permissions, and find
out that Plugins under www.youtube.com has been reset to Always Ask.

Expected behaviour: about:permissions should save my changes, and
www.youtube.com (e.g.) should stop asking for permission to play videos.

[Bug 1181867] [NEW] Send to workspace x works, but also changes window's location

2013-05-19 Thread Ben Pearre
Public bug reported:

Using this in Ubuntu 13.04 moves the window to workspace x, but also
shifts the window up and left by amounts that appear to be equal to the
frame thickness in those directions (i.e. the upper-left corner of the
window's content is positioned where the upper-left corner of the frame
used to be).

I'm using sawfish as the session through .xinitrc. I have Send to
workspace x bound to Super-M-Fx.

This didn't happen under 12.04 LTS, under KDE using $KDEWM=sawfish. I
didn't try running sawfish separately on my 12.04 system...

I'll note that the version of Sawfish shipped with Ubuntu (and all
current versions of Debian) is 1.5.3, which was released 3.5 years ago
(http://sawfish.wikia.com/wiki/2009_11_12:_sawfish_1.5.3_released). The
current Stable sawfish is 1.9.1, released 0.66 years ago
(http://sawfish.wikia.com/wiki/2012_09_01:_Sawfish_1.9.1). Perhaps
shipping a more recent version of sawfish with Ubuntu would be an
expedient way to fix this bug--and probably others?

[Bug 1007220] [NEW] KDE USB hotplug tray app does not warn about failed unmounts

2012-05-31 Thread Ben Pearre
Public bug reported:

KDE panel is set to autohide (on right edge of screen).

Plugging in a USB device, the tray icon does something reasonable. But
when I bring it up and click the unmount button, the panel autohides
EVEN WHEN THE UNMOUNT FAILED (e.g. open file). There's a warning in the
bottom of the USB device box, but it's invisible, presumably because the
panel has hidden itself.

There SHOULD be a warning that says the device could not be unmounted.
DO NOT REMOVE IT! that stays visible (and in fact is prominent) when
the unmounting fails.

[Bug 942851] [NEW] after network disconnect, network-manager or tray network applets prompt for password even though they know it.

2012-02-28 Thread Ben Pearre
Public bug reported:

When my wireless router powercycles, I get dialog boxes from my network
manager applets (both nm-applet and kde network management settings
applet) asking for me to re-enter the password.

But they already know everything and are just being lazy! They know the
correct network to which they should be connecting (as evidenced by the
fact that they ask for the password for the correct network). They know
the password (they've been instructed to save the password, and they
have done so: when the network is already up and they start up, they
connect).

This morning I awoke to 35 such prompts from each applet (I am running
both right now, since they have somewhat different functionality, but
this does not affect this bug). Kded4 asked for the password in a
Secrets for my correct network box; nm-applet wanted Passwords or
encryption keys--again for the correct network. I wish I could report
a bug here for my wireless router, which seems sensitive to power spikes
or brownouts or whatever is causing it to reset :) But since it does
reset, it seems that network-manager ought to be able to use the
information it already has and reconnect automatically.

Either network-manager or the applets know everything. Why are they so
lazy?

[Bug 925857] [NEW] sawfish-ui does not do anything

2012-02-02 Thread Ben Pearre
Public bug reported:

sawfish-ui brings up a window that just sits there. Clicking on

[Bug 914968] [NEW] Wallpaper settings get confused with part-time external monitor

2012-01-11 Thread Ben Pearre
Public bug reported:

I sometimes have an external monitor plugged into my laptop. For each
monitor, I set the wallpaper slideshow to refresh every hour from my own
photo collection (in a nonstandard directory, btw, but this had better
be irrelevant!).

Test: unplug the external monitor. Result: laptop screen is now divided
into 2 with a white vertical line about 5 pixels wide. The left piece
is about 80 pixels wide and cycles through photos from my wallpaper
collection. Right-click and asking for next wallpaper image refreshes
this tiny image. The right piece takes up the rest of my screen, and
shows a different wallpaper image, and right-click/next wallpaper
image does the same thing. The two images are independent, as they
should be with 2 monitors. But plasma is failing to realise that
there's only one monitor?! This persists if I kill and restart plasma-
desktop.

Plug the external monitor in again, and now the laptop monitor does
_the_same_thing_! And now the right-half of the laptop monitor shows
the same image as the whole external monitor, updates identically, etc.
Kill and restart plasma-desktop seems to fix this.

System settings / Display / Size Orientation / Identify Outputs
looks correct: DVI1 for external, LVDS1 for built-in, even before
kill/restart of plasma-desktop.

This is a new bug--the KDE in Ubuntu 11.04 did not have this bug.

Possibly related: my Plasma panel is set to right side, auto-hide (or
at least when it's behaving; it seems to like to crash a lot since the
upgrade that came with 11.10). But when in the single-monitor
configuration, no panel is available (even if I kill and restart plasma-
desktop). If KDE is confused about how many monitors I have, it might
think that the panel is in the other monitor?

[Bug 915099] [NEW] Plasma-desktop eats the panel's brain when unplugging external monitor

2012-01-11 Thread Ben Pearre
Public bug reported:

I have a DVI monitor above LVDS (laptop built-in). My panel is right-
edge, autohide. Things I've seen when removing the laptop (i.e.
disconnecting the external monitor):

1) The panel won't appear. Killing/restarting plasma-desktop does not
solve this--the panel is just gone. Presumably it wasn't told that the
other screen doesn't exist anymore?

2) Reinstalling external monitor and reconfiguring sometimes results in
the reappearance of the panel. Sometimes not. Kill/restart plasma-
desktop fixes this, but may reset the panel to not auto-hide.

3) After this disconnect-reconnect-restart-plasma deal, the panel menu
and hovertext boxes come up on the left side of the screen, despite the
fact that the panel is still on the right.

4) The panel settings menu does not come up when requested.

5) (Sometimes) All windows disappear. Their processes are still
running, but they do not appear on the display in any virtual desktop.
When I reinstall the external monitor and reset the display to my
preferred configuration, they come back.

This is with KDEWM=sawfish

This is all new since Ubuntu 11.10--worked mostly fine under 11.04.

[Bug 914146] Re: LightDM ignores shell choice, at least for KDE plasma

2012-01-10 Thread Ben Pearre
Update: this was true of the other desktop choices as well. The
workaround: reboot again. Still a bug, though--at least it should
probably recognise the problem and say You need to reboot again or
something.

[Bug 914146] [NEW] LightDM ignores shell choice, at least for KDE plasma

2012-01-09 Thread Ben Pearre
Public bug reported:

I just upgraded 11.04 to 11.10. The login manager gives me a cog, upon
which I click. I see a list of shells. KDE Plasma is among them. I
select it and enter my password. I get not KDE but Unity again. No
errors, no offers to install the necessary software, just silent
flouting of my wish.

I've selected KDE at the login prompt and then re-clicked and sure
enough the indicator bullet is next to KDE. So it's accepting my
clicks.

[Bug 912519] [NEW] --partial-dir conflicts with --delete-excluded

2012-01-05 Thread Ben Pearre
Public bug reported:

When using --partial-dir=x, partially transferred files are kept in x.
From the man page,

If the partial-dir value is not an absolute path, rsync will add
an exclude rule at the end of all your existing excludes.

If I further use --delete-excluded, then the partial dir is deleted
before the transfer resumes. So no more partial-transfer resume.

The partial-dir exclude should be added after executing --delete-
excluded, or should not use the same mechanism as the exclude rule.
