[Bug 857073] Re: Internal speakers don't work on the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook

2011-10-06 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
HI David, because the latest builds failed, I used this build:

https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/alsa-
daily/+build/2825261

I rebooted and tried sound but it didn't work, however it worked again
after I suspended and resumed, so no change unfortunately.

Aand here's the results after I put the laptop into suspend and then
resumed, hence sound works.

http://www.alsa-
project.org/db/?f=3ccc6a37d6ba1bd0a57fc629f244853c1b091961

Disclaimer: The first test was run logged in as GNOME Shell, the second
test as Unity. I couldn't get GNOME Shell to suspend properly to run the
alsa-info a second time, but Unity worked fine. Hopefully this doesn't
affect the sound (it shouldn't).

[Bug 857073] [NEW] Internal speakers don't work on the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook

2011-09-23 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

The internal speakers aren't working with Ubuntu on the Samsung Series 5
Chromebook. The headphone port and microphone work fine, however.

Following the instructions in the comment section on this article, I
grabbed the contents of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf from Chrome OS and
pasted it into /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf on Ubuntu, but
unfortunately that still didn't fix my problem.

http://chromeos-cr48.blogspot.com/2011/04/ubuntu-1104-for-cr-48-is-
ready.html

It might be worth noting that sound through the internal speakers has
worked before - initially it was running fine with Ubuntu 11.04 until
there was a backports update to alsa, and since I did a dist-upgrade to
Oneiric for testing, I haven't been able to get sound working through
the internal speakers again.

[Bug 752098] Re: In a dual monitor setup with different resolutions, Unity places windows in the dead zone

2011-04-22 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Heh. Yeah, I think an SRU fix would be nice. I actually opened an
application the other day (Inkscape) and it spawned a window in the dead
zone - just when I thought it was fixed...

[Bug 752098] Re: In a dual monitor setup with different resolutions, Unity places windows in the dead zone

2011-04-19 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Hey Sam,

Indeed, it seems to be fixed somehow. I did some simple testing. With
CCSM Place Windows plugin set to:

Placement Mode: Smart
Multi Output Mode: Use active output device

When I reported this bug:

I had a terminal on the Unity launcher. Middle clicking it have a dozen
times would spawn instances of the Terminal above the viewable monitor
area (dead zone) until that was full, then it would spawn in the
viewable area.

The only way I could actually use these terminals in the dead zone would
be to go into Workspace Switcher (aka, Expo) and then drag the windows
down into the viewable area.

Now:

It seems the issue has been fixed somewhere along the line, (maybe in a
recent version of Compiz?) so when I repeat the same thing as above, all
of my terminal windows spawn in the viewable area and can be used,
exactly how it should work.

Whether this is just me being lucky, and whether it has anything
whatsoever to do with my video card drivers (ie, is it fixed for
everyone?) I have no idea.

What's still not fixed:

* The mouse pointer can still go into the dead zone and be lost there.
* It's difficult to reveal the Unity launcher by using the corner hotspot
because it isn't really a corner any more. (Although, now that Unity's
default behaviour is edge reveal, this has sort of had a workaround effect
which makes the launcher easier to reveal anyway - but it's not ideal, and if
Unity's behaviour was manually changed back to corner reveal by the user,
they would experience this issue again with multiple monitors).
* Icons on the desktop still appear in the dead zone

Hope this helps.

Strange, I'm running a fresh install of Natty which I installed on the

from defaults apart from installing Flash, Microsoft Core Fonts and the

Any ideas as to why I'm experiencing but no one else is?

[Bug 728110] [NEW] [Natty] Typing Chrome should display Chromium in results

2011-03-02 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

In Maverick, if one typed the word Chrome into the Software Center,
Chromium would still be listed as a result.

In Natty, if you type the word Chrome then you won't see Chromium. It
appears in the results up until you type the e at the end of the word
Chrome.

I believe this is a regression.

[Bug 641028] [NEW] Skype appears as a technical item in Canonical Partners

2010-09-16 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

To reproduce in 3 easy steps:

1. Open up the Software Center

2. Click Canonical Partners on the left. Note that the only thing
showing is Fluendo mp3 codecs

3. Click on Show 4 technical items. Note that Adobe Reader and Skype
appear.

Somehow, I don't think that these common applications are technical
items.

[Bug 631217] Re: Can't save dual monitor configuration

2010-09-06 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Sebastien, I can't remember what particular update broke it because I
had about 200mb of updates when it happened. All I know is that it was
working, then one day it wasn't.

Not sure how useful this will be, but in the same set of updates a bug
was FIXED that had been annoying me for some time: The GDM now appears
only on one monitor while the other is black. Previously, the GDM would
be cloned across both monitors and stretched. This could be the same
package.

The error could not save configuration lends itself to suggesting it
might be a permissions problem. If you can tell me what file it's trying
to write to, I can investigate further.

As for reproducing, just install the latest version of Maverick and use
the stock drivers that come with it - I have an ATI card but as Leon
reports, it is also reproducible with an Intel card. Simply connect an
external monitor (I'm using HDMI, Leon, are you using VGA or HDMI?) and
try to change something in System Preferences Monitors.

[Bug 625193] Re: Official 10.10 wallpaper is unappealing

2010-08-30 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
In this case, the mainstream certainly does not like the wallpaper.
That's obvious. I also don't believe this wallpaper was landed in
Maverick with the intention of it being a temporary one. This has never
been done before, it was landed right on the UI freeze. If the default
wallpaper does change between now and Maverick, it will be as a result
of the backlash from the community rather than something that was
planned all along.

Regarding giving more information: I shouldn't have to tell the design
team what's wrong with it, they're paid to design good things, they
should know. When somebody does bad work, they should be ready to face
the consequences - most of the time criticism. This is true in all other
areas of the world. Grow a thicker skin.

The problem with open source is that no one has the guts to stand up and
call people out on bad work for fear of getting a telling off from the
community - I should know, I'm usually the one standing up.

If no one points out mistakes, then we will never advance. This
wallpaper is a mistake and it needs to be fixed so that we can forget
about this and release the quality distro that Maverick is without users
projectile vomiting when they boot up for the first time.

[Bug 577825] Re: Either battery status icon not being shown, or the icon showing Laptop battery is charged.

2010-08-19 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Hmm. This problem has recently appeared for me on my Toshiba Satellite
A200 running amd64 Maverick with the 2.6.35-14 kernel. I don't get an
icon at all, and no battery tab in gnome power manager. Been running
Ubuntu since 8.10 on this laptop and this problem has only cropped up
recently.

I also don't get notifications when I adjust screen brightness anymore,
I think that's related.

[Bug 620414] [NEW] Laptop battery not recognized on Maverick

2010-08-19 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

Something happened recently on my Toshiba Satellite A200 laptop running
amd64 Maverick fully updated, and now Ubuntu thinks I'm on a desktop
computer. I'm using the latest kernel in the repos, 2.6.35-16-generic.

The laptop has had no problems with the battery not being recognized
before on previous version of Ubuntu. I haven't had time to do a fresh
install to check if it's still present then.

This is what seems to be missing:

 - No on battery tab in Power Management (http://twitpic.com/2fkm53)
 - Battery icon will no longer display in the panel at all
 - No notifications related to battery whenever I unplug or plug in the power
cord
 - No notifications anymore when I change the brightness using Fn + F6 / F7
 - Screen doesn't automatically dim when on battery

Sorry if this is a duplicate, and sorry I didn't know which package to
file it under.

[Bug 611925] Re: sources are not recognized

2010-08-19 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
You can always run the following commands to remove the .save and
.distUpgrade files temporarily but they seem to be created again rather
quickly.

cd /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
sudo rm *.save
sudo rm *.distUpgrade

If this bug isn't fixed there might be a lot of confusion when people
update for the first time after upgrading from Lucid to Maverick...

[Bug 620414] Re: Laptop battery not recognized on Maverick

2010-08-19 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
I reinstalled acpi-support and pm-utils, and when reinstalling acpi-
support I got this:

Setting up acpi-support (0.137) ...
update-rc.d: warning: /etc/init.d/acpi-support missing LSB information
update-rc.d: see http://wiki.debian.org/LSBInitScripts

Also, it's worth nothing that my battery shows up under
/proc/acpi/battery/BAT0 with the following files:

alarm
info
state

The info and state files change when I unplug the AC power, so Ubuntu is
recognizing the battery state changes, but not actually doing anything
about it regarding the desktop.

[Bug 573664] [NEW] Two volume icons in panel

2010-05-02 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

It appears that running Sound Preferences adds another volume icon to
the notification area, although I'm not sure why.

To reproduce:

1. Left click on the monochrome sound icon that appears in Lucid by
default and select sound preferences.

2. Note that another sound applet is added to the notification area, but
with a different icon.

3. Note that you can't right click on this new icon and remove it from
the panel.

See attached screenshot taken using the Humanity icon set, not ubuntu-
mono which is default in Lucid.

Note: I don't believe this is a duplicate of bug 401294 because that was
apparently fixed in Karmic.

2010-05-02 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

In Synaptic, I have four packages under residual config that won't go
away when I select Completely remove. These packages are:

linux-backports-modules-nouveau-2.6.32-15-generic
linux-backports-modules-nouveau-2.6.32-16-generic
linux-backports-modules-nouveau-2.6.32-19-generic
linux-backports-modules-nouveau-2.6.32-20-generic

When I try to uninstall them, I get this error:

E: linux-backports-modules-nouveau-2.6.32-20-generic: subprocess
installed post-removal script returned error exit status 1

This is particularly annoying since I have an ATI card :)

[Bug 570565] [NEW] Rhythmbox should open a window when started conventionally

2010-04-27 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

On 27/04/10 04:29, Benjamin Humphrey wrote:

On the subject of Rhythmbox, currently when you start it, it will open
to the last state - eg. in the notification area, or maximized, or just
a window on some workspace. I don't think it should do this. When people
open a program, they expect to see a reaction immediately. If it's
opening as a 10x10 pixel icon in the corner of their screen, or in
another workspace where they can't see it, then they will be confused
and become frustrated.

Also, what do you want to do when you open a music player? You want to
play music, select your song or artist or album, or choose a podcast or
browse the store. None of these can be achieved when the window is on
another workspace, or with the limited functionality of the music menu
in the notification area. Plus, I believe this action is inconsistent
with most other programs.

Mark Shuttleworth wrote:

Yes, I agree, Rhythmbox when launched conventionally should display a
window. It might remember its state w.r.t. being maximised, and it's
position (playlist) from the preious time it was running, but you
should get the feeling of having opened it if you click on it in the
launcher.

Please do file a bug and copy this exchange into it.

[Bug 565648] Re: Rhythmbox fails to start, cites music store errors

2010-04-17 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
It might be worth mentioning that I have Ubuntu One unchecked in Startup
Applications as I don't use the file sharing, but still want to use
Rhythmbox. This is probably the cause for the problem.

I think the real bug here is that Rhythmbox should still start even if
it can't start the Ubuntu One music store due to an error.

[Bug 248355] Re: Evince doesn't anti-alias graphics

2010-04-01 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
The patch arrived in Lucid updates today, and while it fixes most of the
images, some still remain the same. For example, take the two
attachments I posted.

evince.png is now fixed, but the second one of Rhythmbox,
evince2.png remains the same. And they're both in the same PDF.

[Bug 248355] Re: Evince doesn't anti-alias graphics

2010-03-29 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Our entire team has the same issue in Ubuntu, across Karmic and Lucid.
The fonts are okay, but the images are very jagged/not anti-aliased.

I'm not sure whether this is the same issue as what we are having so I
have posted some screenshots. If it's the same bug and it has been fixed
then that is fantastic, can't wait for it to hit main.

The PDF in question is http://ubuntu-manual.org/ubuntu-manual-draft.pdf

Our team is https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-manual and we're on IRC in
#ubuntu-manual on freenode.

[Bug 550647] [NEW] System Monitor icons are lacking transparency

2010-03-28 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

In Lucid, System Monitor is now transparent.

[Bug 544877] [NEW] World music store fails to offer a decent selection of music

2010-03-23 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox-ubuntuone-music-store

I live in New Zealand, thereby I get the world store by default.

To test out the music store, I searched for these bands, who happen to
be some of the biggest bands in the world and also some of my
favourite artists.

Dave Matthews Band
Muse
U2
Eagles
Red Hot Chili Peppers

But alas, none of these artists can be found in the world store.

Just because I live in New Zealand doesn't mean I don't listen to Muse.
Dave Matthews Band happens to be very popular in Australia too. I'm sure
U2 is popular everywhere.

I'm an end-user, I want to get the music that I like and I cannot do
that, therefore it's a bug. End users don't care about regions or record
label licensing or whatever else, they just want to get the music they
like and if they cannot do that, they won't use the store.

Couple that with the fact that everything is offered in Euro for some
reason, and that Rhythmbox starts minimized to the tray (I spent about
30 seconds trying to work out why it hadn't started before I saw the
icon) and overall I'm pretty disappointed.

I'm sure the artist support is great in Europe or the USA, but the fact
is that everyone doesn't live in Europe and the USA!

[Bug 545521] [NEW] [Lucid] Gnome-panel applets disappear, freezes, locks up computer, 99% CPU usage

2010-03-23 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

This is a bug present today, something in recent updates has destroyed
gnome-panel - on amd64 Lucid at least.

Was doing my work when suddenly the panel just wouldn't work, I clicked
on the menu, window list etc and it wouldn't register my clicks or
rollovers or anything. I ran killall gnome-panel in a terminal and it
locked my computer up.

Went into a virtual terminal and ran top, gnome-panel was using 99% CPU,
tried to kill the process ID again but it keeps coming back.

I removed gnome-panel, ran an update and reinstalled the panel but same
problem. Tried rebooting, restarting X etc. The only way I can report
this bug is by booting up, leaving gnome-panel running at 99% CPU and
then using a terminal to run apport. It's very hard to type as there is
a huge lag because the panel is eating all the CPU so my computer is
very unresponsive and unusable.

This is a critical bug.

[Bug 545521] Re: [Lucid] Gnome-panel applets disappear, freezes, locks up computer, 99% CPU usage

2010-03-23 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Appears to be a duplicate of bug 479826.

I fixed it by removing:

~/.gconf/apps/panel/general/%gconf.xml

~/.gconf/apps/panel/toplevels/panel_1

I think it could be related to dual monitors. I have my laptop, and then
my 24 Dell LCD that I plug into. On the Dell, when it's plugged in, I
have a panel set to auto hide. When it's not plugged in, that panel
doesn't show up on the laptop screen. This all happened randomly when I
was not plugged into the monitor.

It's a bit scary how it can completely destroy your entire system. I
couldn't connect to wireless easily because the wireless applet was
gone, it killed X and froze everything, used up tonnes of CPU and
memory. When I removed gnome-panel it basically rendered everything
(including Nautilus) useless. Quite a major bug I would say, depending
on how often it happens.

[Bug 479826] Re: gnome-panel consuming 100% of CPU and driving up memory

2010-03-23 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
I had the exact same thing happen to me today, I can confirm this. I
reported it as bug 545521. Completely took down the system like I have
never seen before, might have something to do with hot-plugging dual
monitors. (I'm running Lucid beta1 by the way).

Not a bug. Launchpad/rosetta was never designed for such active

Everything will be fine after the writing freeze on the 31st March.

[Bug 538698] [NEW] About Me Instant Messaging options should be updated

2010-03-14 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

Sorry team, not sure what package About Me is in - I had a look and
asked around but couldn't find any information.

Basically at the moment the options for Instant Messaging are:

Jabber
Yahoo
MSN
AIM/iChat
ICQ
Groupwise

I think that we could probably quite safely remove Groupwise and Jabber
and replace them with Facebook and Skype?

I tried to look up some hard statistics on IM protocols, but all I found
was the information on this page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_messaging#User_base

No stats on Jabber or Groupwise... I believe they are the least-used out
of the above. Facebook and Skype on the other hand have the most users
in the world so it would make sense to include them in the list of
protocols :)

Even Google Talk might be a good one to add too.

Thanks!

+ If we add these extra protocols in, we'll have a lot of things that will

[Bug 533560] Re: New volume applet has usability issues

2010-03-11 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Matt, I've created new bug reports for the still-relevant issues and
linked to them from here.

** Description changed:

+ Changed into separate bugs.
+
  Binary package hint: gnome-applets

This applet now looks a lot worse than the Karmic one, in my opinion.
  Why?

- The slider is too short and doesn't let you fine tune volume properly
- The two options, mute all and sound preferences are not grouped together
+ The slider is too short and doesn't let you fine tune volume properly (bug
537768)
+ The two options, mute all and sound preferences are not grouped together
(bug 537770)
There's a random 1px line that inexplicably runs underneath the slider box
The max volume icon doesn't have enough padding, compared to the no volume
icon
- Volume changes appear in the notification system - you would expect the
volume controls to have the same style
+ Volume changes appear in the notification system - you would expect the

The size of the box is inconsistent with the wireless connection menu, the
messaging menu, the MeMenu, the date/time/calender and the user session menu -
all of these are longer than they are wide, but this one is wider than it is
long
The background colour for the slider looks out of place, it isn't necessary.
(bug 522471)

To be honest, this applet does nothing right except change your volume
when you move it. In fact, with this track record, I wouldn't be
surprised if moving the slider to the right actually decreased the
  volume!

[Bug 403135] Re: Notification area icon wrongly rendered/has a black background (multiple apps)

2010-03-06 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Still present in Lucid Lynx alpha 3 with the Ambiance and Radiance
themes.

But, interestingly, it goes away when you use the following themes:

Homosapien
Kin
Clearlooks
Turrican

Apart from Clearlooks, these are all from the community-themes
package.

It's obviously theme dependent. I've attached a screenshot of my Lucid
desktop running Homosapien, and you can see that the Banshee and Pidgin
icons are displayed correctly. (I've moved the window controls back to
where they should be, this is actually Lucid.)

Binary package hint: software-center

See attached image.

This might be a bug, or intentional, or it might just be a placeholder
until someone comes up with something else. But i'll report this anyway
and tell you why it's not nice:

It has a big black border around it which doesn’t match the rest of the
Software Center style
It is using a red that isn’t in the Ubuntu colour pallete
It is using a red that doesn’t appear anywhere else in the Software Center
It doesn’t have the padding set correctly, so it appears out of place.

[Bug 533544] [NEW] New notification area problems

2010-03-06 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

See attached image.

The new notification area in Lucid has two issues. Spacing and applet
behavior.

The notification area now takes up almost a whole 1/4 of my top panel.
For those of us who don’t like having two panels and want their window
list up the top, it leaves hardly any room to show open windows.

Just look at the spacing around the Rhythmbox icon, you could drive a
bus through there!

The current panel spacing is bad because:

It uses up too much of your top panel
It is inconsistent compared with the rest of the theme
It is inconsistent with other items on the panel*

* Compare the gap between Rhythmbox and the volume icon with the gap
between the wireless network icon and Pidgin.

Another thing that’s flawed about this new notification area is the fact
that each item isn’t an individual applet. For example, say I want to
remove the Messaging menu because I don’t like it or don’t use it. This
is actually a fairly plausible scenario, many people don’t use Evolution
because they prefer webmail services such as Gmail. Also, many people
use Pidgin instead of Empathy because, well, because Pidgin is just
better. So in this scenario, pretty much 75% of the functionality of the
messaging menu is now useless.

My only option is to remove the entire notification applet, so I lose
Rhythmbox, the battery status indicator, and the volume indicator. (For
some reason the wireless applet is separate.)

Solution? You could either separate all of the applets into individual
ones, but I think the best way would be to logically group them into
“system status” and “applications.”

For example, in the “system status” area you could have things that tell
you information:

Battery indicator
Wireless indicator
Volume indicator
Crash report notification
Updates available
CPU Scaling

And in the “applications” area you could have a tray-like section that
has stores the icons for applications while they are running:

Rhythmbox
Messaging Menu
Pidgin
Desktop Drapes
Banshee
Transmission
etc

This is just one possible idea for a solution.

[Bug 533548] [NEW] rhythmbox-applet checkbox inconsistency

2010-03-06 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox-applet

See screenshot.

The checkbox should be in line with all the other icons, not randomly
out to one side.

Actually, having a checkbox at all is silly. It should be just
play/pause - you don't need a checkbox.

[Bug 533552] [NEW] Ubuntu default font is too big

2010-03-06 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

It’s about time that Ubuntu changed the default font size from 10, 96
dpi to something a bit smaller. I use size 8, 96 dpi with Sans and it’s
perfectly legible. Having a gigantic font size suggests that our
operating system is a toy for kids.

The effect of having the font so large is evident from the outset –
menus appear never-ending, dialogue windows seem disproportioned and the
entire feel given off is that of a toy.” - omgubuntu.co.uk

Here’s stock Firefox with with ascending font sizes. Notice how much
more room Firefox has with 8px – practical for netbook users, no?

[Bug 533558] [NEW] Computer Janitor doesn't describe what it does

2010-03-06 Thread Benjamin Humphrey
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: computer-janitor

Pretend you're a new user. The titles of each section aren't clear
enough. In fact, the entire program isn't clear on what it's supposed to
do.

Unused what? That doesn't make sense, because Google Chrome and Skype appear
there and I use those every day.
Recommended what? Recommended applications to install? To download? Recommend
what I should feed my cat?
Optimize what? Defragment? Run a virus scan? Clear my browsing history?
