This seems to be fixed in Quantal (12.10). I occasionally have similar symptoms on my Dell E6420 with Sandy Bridge graphics. It uninstalls kvm and qemu packages from jaunty and installs the new qemu-kvm package from karmic. Problem gone. I did have the same problem on my Dell M1330 running Jaunty (with nvidia 180.44), which was upgraded all the way from Gutsy. The fan was very noisy, starting and stopping very often. GPU temperature was high nevertheless. There was no problem while still running Intrepid (BIOS A12). I recently re-installed from scratch with Jaunty due to a harddisk crash.
