[Bug 1458170] Re: Vivid + bootchart quietly fails
bootchart seems faulty to me in 15.04. At first I only noticed that there was a long delay at shutdown, IIRC having appeared after the upgrade to vivid. After much painful investigation, I could trace it to swapoff. After boot, the swap usage always kept growing, maxing out at approx. 2 GiB -- despite there was no memory pressure (1.6 of 4 GiB RAM used, default swappiness of 60). Then I read somewhere that RAM filesystems like tmpfs filesystems tend to be swapped out quickly. df showed the culprit: ~$ df -h /dev Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on udev2,0G 2,0G 0 100% /dev ~$ du -sh /dev/.bootchart/log 2,0G/dev/.bootchart/log ~$ Wondering what bootchart was doing, I found the last successful logs in /var/log/bootchart with PNGs of trusty. From utopic there were only TGZs; nothing of vivid there. So it seems to me too that bootchart is failing silently in vivid. It seems the collector process is not terminated properly and the logs aren't saved in the right place afterwards. Wouldn't it make sense to deprecate the package and at least put a note in the README or package description? Especially since systemd, which is used in vivid by default, can do bootcharting on its own. Also note that a few days after upgrading to vivid, I manually switched back from systemd to upstart; bootchart fails nonetheless. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1458170 Title: Vivid + bootchart quietly fails To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bootchart/+bug/1458170/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 779105] Re: qbankmanager doesn't find german translation file
Well, two weeks have passed. Should the package maintainer still roam among the living, the following might interest her or him: Using strace, I found that qbankmanager looks for /usr/share/aqbanking/i18n/de.qm and not for the above mentioned /usr/share/qbankmanager/i18n/de.qm . Using a symlink I could circumvent the problem. But: the file de.qm contains only english text, instead of the german translation. So the no translation found error vanishes, but the interface is still english. If the package maintainer needs any support or help, I'd be happy to provide it if I can. [Bug 683605] Re: kernel hibernate signature has changed from S1SUSPEND to LINHIB0001
I'd suspect to rethink the fix. From mainline kernel git: Author: Rafael J. Wysocki r...@sisk.pl 2010-12-11 21:46:44 Committer: Rafael J. Wysocki r...@sisk.pl 2010-12-16 17:08:58 PM / Hibernate: Restore old swap signature to avoid user space breakage Commit 3624eb0 (PM / Hibernate: Modify signature used to mark swap) attempted to modify hibernate signature used to mark swap partitions containing hibernation images, so that old kernels don't try to handle compressed images. Changelog excerpt (first bullet addresses this one): sysvinit (2.87dsf-4ubuntu18) maverick; urgency=low * Allocate pidof/killall5 omitpid buffers dynamically. 16 is too small for killall5 now that all Upstart jobs are omitted. * Create /lib/init/rw as a symlink to /var/run on new installations, and fix it up in /etc/init.d/umountroot on upgrade, as it's difficult to do this at any other time; this saves us chasing around all the individual packages that use one or the other for sendsigs.omit.d (LP: #541512). * Handle /var/run/sendsigs.omit.d explicitly, just in case. -- Colin Watson cjwat...@ubuntu.com Fri, 24 Sep 2010 10:48:28 +0100 ** Changed in: sysvinit (Ubuntu) Status: New = Fix Released -- killall5 fails on more than 16 -o pid parameters https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/634460 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 616287] Re: umountfs doesn't cleanly unmount / on reboot
The problem I reported should be fixed with the following sysvinit update (first bullet, killall5 problem). But it still seems to occur occasionally, I couldn't trace the cause. Any advice how to approach this is welcome. sysvinit (2.87dsf-4ubuntu18) maverick; urgency=low * Allocate pidof/killall5 omitpid buffers dynamically. -- Colin Watson cjwat...@ubuntu.com Fri, 24 Sep 2010 10:48:28 +0100 -- umountfs doesn't cleanly unmount / on reboot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/616287 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 626390] Re: Change default cpufreq governor to ondemand
Well, this bug concerns a trivial part of kernel configuration, so I'm not sure what you want me to test. But I can assure you (just checked), latest upstream git revision b30a3f6 has CONFIG_CPU_FREQ_DEFAULT_GOV_ONDEMAND in its default configuration, though it is not set by default. I also have successfully compiled upstream kernels with this option set in the past, and it worked fabulously. I'd just like to have the ondemand governor by default in *Ubuntu* kernels -- it just makes no sense to boot or e.g. check filesystems on full CPU frequency, because both is heavily I/O related. IMHO. ** Tags removed: needs-upstream-testing -- Change default cpufreq governor to ondemand https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/626390 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 616287] Re: umountfs doesn't cleanly unmount / on reboot
For me (no KDE relation), it's probably a problem in /etc/init.d/sendsigs. At system shutdowns that end with mount: / is busy) and an unclean filesystem, I can always spot this message a few lines above: killall5: omit pid buffer size 16 exceeded! * I did some tracing, the issue seems to be the last killall5 call which fails, and failure is NOT checked. * It so happens that killall5 accepts PID for processes it shouldn't kill, but only up to 16 (seems to be configured at compile-time). In sendsigs, the list of PIDs to omit is created as OMITPIDS. It typically has got more than 16 PIDs in it on my system. -- umountfs doesn't cleanly unmount / on reboot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/616287 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 623550] [NEW] Computer often freezes while entering hibernation since maverick alpha
Public bug reported: Since trying out Maverick Alpha, my Thinkpad T41 quite often (approx. 5 out of 10 times) freezes while entering hibernation mode. It always happens at the same stage. When hibernating successfully, this happens: 1. session gets locked, screen black, backlight on 2. VT appears, moon LED starts blinking 3. Backlight is turned off, moon LED blinks 4. Backlight is turned on again, moon LED off, HD saves memory contents 5. Computer turns off. When the bug hits, computer hangs at step 3. (I once waited for some 15 minutes, nothing else happened.) /var/log/pm-suspend.log always ends with lines like these: Tue Aug 24 20:46:55 CEST 2010: performing hibernate I turned on pm_trace; the hw clock is set but after booting, there is *never* a hash matches entry in dmesg output. Menus are the same whether using notification area applet or indicator applet. Examples for menus: on AC: - Laptop battery 35 minutes until charged (80%) - Preferences on Battery: - 5 hours 6 minutes remaining - Laptop battery 5 hours 5 minutes remaining (80%) - Preferences Also note: On battery, first and second lines practically always differ (often several minutes). [Bug 614810] Re: gdm displays no user at startup in Ubuntu Maverick
For me, those symptoms started with gdm 2.30.4-0ubuntu1. I second the race condition, since the problem doesn't always appear. Sometimes after booting (minority of cases), the user list is shown normally. P.S.: Workaround: No need to install xdm. Just log into a VT and enter startx. -- gdm displays no user at startup in Ubuntu Maverick https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/614810 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 614810] Re: gdm displays no user at startup in Ubuntu Maverick
Addition to my previous comment, referring to #4: - version see above - doesn't happen everytime, but when it happens (normally directly after booting), restarting gdm (sudo restart gdm) doesn't help. -- gdm displays no user at startup in Ubuntu Maverick https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/614810 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 318085] Re: Unable to enumerate usb device
Thank you for your suggestion. But I used several different devices and all available ports; they all show the same behaviour as described above. After dualbooting into Windows XP, USB 2 works normal. If I unbind ehci-hcd, also no problem (but USB 1 speed). [Bug 607982] Re: [maverick alpha] hdparm -B has no effect on hd power management
I found out the cause, hdparm is not the culprit. /usr/lib/pm- utils/power.d/harddrive from pm-utils sets most aggressive power saving defaults; my harddrive seems to interpret the spindown setting as a shorter duration than intended (30 s). Marking invalid, opening new bug for pm-utils as applicable. ** Changed in: hdparm (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- [maverick alpha] hdparm -B has no effect on hd power management https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/607982 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 612969] [NEW] too aggressive hard disk power saving defaults
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pm-utils IMHO, the power saving defaults in /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/harddrive are much too aggressive. The below mentioned battery values cause my hard disk to spin down after approx. five(!) seconds. This produces much more wear on the hard disk than it's worth for energy saving. Also, this should be documented (not only what it does, but why those values were chosen) and user changeable. If the default is so aggressive, it also should be adjustable user-friendly, i.e. graphically. Defaults as per pm-utils 1.4.1-1: * hdparm -S (spin down): AC 0 (disable), battery 6 (should correspond to 6*5 = 30 seconds, but see above) * hdparm -W (drive write cache): AC 1 (enable), battery 0 (disable). Why would we need to disable write caching on battery -- just for the case that it runs out of energy? * hdparm -B (advanced power management): AC 254 (minimum saving), battery 1 (maximum saving). Too aggressive IMHO, causes my HD, provided spin down (-S) is disabled, to frequently unload the heads (SMART load cycle count is skyrocketing). * hdparm -M (acoustic management): AC 254 (maximum performance), battery 128 (max quietness as commented on in [...]/power.d/harddrive). Don't know, may be appropriate. I'd please like to hear the opinions of the maintainers.
