Then back to a normal login screen the login works as normal both for the 3.5.0-10 and -11 kernels and even for the 3.6.0 rc1 and rc2 kernels and normal CPU-load. + Workaround 3: + Remove the grub splash option. + Not sure it's the libdrm-nouveau2 package but remember that one was introduced for DRM in the time frame for this bug. Thanks for the link confirming it's an nvidia bug. Maybe it's doable to port the xorg-edgers nvidia patch to quantal. [Bug 993506] [NEW] nvidia-current 295.40-0ubuntu1: nvidia-current kernel module failed to build
Public bug reported: Installing the kernel 3.4.0-1.2 fails to build the nvidia-current module due to missing kernel header files. Workaround: Copy the missing header files from arm cd /usr/src/linux-headers-3.4.0-1/arch sudo cp arm/include/asm/system.h x86/include/asm/ sudo cp arm/include/asm/compiler.h x86/include/asm/ sudo cp arm/include/asm/system_info.h x86/include/asm/ sudo cp arm/include/asm/system_misc.h x86/include/asm/ and then reinstall the kernel. [Bug 886667] Re: boot moves desktop icons
Ok, I've tracked this down to Unity and found the root cause. Both the panel and the launcher window struts are wrongly initialized with the BaseWindow default geomentry (100,100,320,200) causing sporadic compression of desktop icons in the lower part of the screen. This is due to that the panel/launcher geometries for their BaseWindows have not been set when corresponding struts are enabled. Those geometries are availble in the code sequences so this patch just rearrange the order to see to that the geometry is set before struts is enabled. Attaching the patch icon_container_size.patch. ** Patch added: icon_container_size.patch https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/886667/+attachment/3076721/+files/icon_container_size.patch ** Also affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** No longer affects: unity (Ubuntu) ** Also affects: unity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed ** Changed in: nux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Invalid ** Changed in: compiz (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/886667 Title: boot moves desktop icons To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/886667/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 886667] Re: boot moves desktop icons
This issue seems to be a nux issue. I don't know what the Nux BaseWindow is for, but it's the one that interfers with EWMH struts and causes this issue. There are two functions: - BaseWindow::BaseWindow(...) - FloatingWindow::FloatingWindow(...) that both set the geometry using - SetGeometry(Geometry(100, 100, 320, 200)); when struts is enabled causing corruption of the struts. In this case the sum of the two y-coordinates 100+200=300 forms the top margin height for the strut and is sporadically detected by Nautilus using that value (300) to calculate the size of the workarea to be used to draw the desktop icons. That's why my earlier proposed workaround patch in Nautilus. Furthermore, the slower the computer is the more frequent this issue seems to be. I tested the geometry for the launcher to fit my screen resolution 1366x768, a panel heigth 24px and a launcher width incl padding of 17px, ie 32+17=49 by patching Nux BaseWindow.cpp: - SetGeometry(Geometry(0, 24, 49, 744)); and the issue (this bug) is gone. Conclusion: This functions (BaseWindow, FloatingWindow,..) should not be active at login or if so, in any case never address the root window for the screen but always be prefixed by a window pointer. Other concerns I have -- The handling of the EWMH struts is improper meaning it does not cover all four struts but only one of them at a given time, ie either the panel or the launcher strut. Thus being violated! http://standards.freedesktop.org/wm-spec/wm-spec-latest.html#id2578550 The Gnome session startup design rule is violated! http://live.gnome.org/SessionManagement/NewGnomeSession Here is says that the Desktop (phase 4 incl startup of Nautilus) must not be started until EWMH struts is complete. As both the WindowManager and Panel components for Unity is Compiz, Unity/Compiz has to handle that internally so the Desktop phase is not started up too early as happens now. A timer is not good enough, especially not for slow computers. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/886667 Title: boot moves desktop icons To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/886667/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 886667] Re: boot moves desktop icons
I've updated the patch as the upstream margin patch has been removed. I've also tested Gnome Classic Compiz and not detected any issues for the desktop icon workspace. At current, Unity settings of those margins is done in the Unity plugin which is to late, i.e those margins must be set one of the first things at session startup using XChangeProperty. If not known (no gsettings?) then those four margins can all be set to 0 and nautilus will adjust the workspace automatically when correct margins are set later. [Bug 886667] Re: boot moves desktop icons
@Gaetano The source package is nautilus. You can either use the patch or update the source manually as it's just one line of code to be added in the source for nautilus-desktop-icon-view.c. Yes, you have to compile it using e.g $ debuild -us -uc to get .deb-packages Check this example if you're in doubt how to compile it: http://askubuntu.com/questions/21225/how-to-apply-a-patch-to-indicator-applet As an alternative you can use my ppa to get the patched version: $ sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:bowmore/pubtest $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install gir1.2-nautilus-3.0 libnautilus-extension1a nautilus nautilus-data and then remove the ppa with $ sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:bowmore/pubtest This version also includes logged messages in syslog of any unreasonable top margin values and looks like this: Mar 26 11:18:42 dtop1 [DEBUG] nautilus-desktop-icon-view: icon_container_set_workarea: top margin ERROR, top = 300 meaning that the source module (file) nautilus-desktop-icon-view.c has a function icon_container_set_workarea () that detects any unreasonable top margin values, here equals 300 pixels. The patch then sets the top margin to 0. I've also moved the backward/forward arrows in the nautilus toolbar to the left of the location field making it easy to visualize that the patched version of nautilus is running. However, no guarantees that I will keep the ppa updated for newer versions.
[Bug 689733] Re: Application icons should only display windows from the current workspace in the window spread
Garthhh, there is no right or wrong here and working in an organized way neither means a one workspace approach nor to isolate spread functions to the current workspace. That is more a Canonical adaptation, that I support, to new users until now used (forced) to that way of working. Some as myself use more workspaces for a task (have done so for 20+ years now), other prefer one only (using stacked and minimized windows) for that purpose. I respect both ways of working. [Bug 886667] Re: boot moves desktop icons
This is not a duplicate of bug #737758. That bug describes how the whole desktop icon container moves horizontally due to an inconsistent handling of the unity launcher width. This bug brings up another issue, i.e when the desktop icon container width and/or height sizes are defined smaller than the correct sizes. Greater sizes however will work correctly as icon locations are pixeloriented. The specific issue here is that the desktop icon container height is defined smaller than the correct size which then causes vertical compression moving any icons located below the container (workarea) upwards. The bug is that X window properties are not properly initialized for the Unity session but inherits old X settings from XGetWindowProperty, here top.height=300, which indicates a panel height of 300 pixels thus reducing the icon container height accordingly causing compression and overlapping of desktop icons. So, undupping this one from #737758. ** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 737758 Desktop icons move after login -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/886667 Title: boot moves desktop icons To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/886667/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 886667] Re: boot moves desktop icons
Reassigning this bug to Compiz. Some tracing points to Compiz and more specifically a Compiz struts issue. Details: windows.cpp CompWindow::updateStruts () struts [0]=0, [1]=0, [2]=300, [3]=0, struts [4]=0, [5]=0, [6]=0, [7]=0 struts [8]=100, [9]=419, [10]=0, [11]=0 The setting of struts [2] = 300 (top.height) is the one that causes this issue, i.e indicates a panel of height 300 pixels that in combination with the real unity panel of 24 pixels later leaves 276 pixels of unused height at the bottom of the screen causing icons in that area to be moved upwards. Futhermore, struts [8]=100 (top.x) and struts [9]=419 (top.width) are inaccurate values e.g for a screen 1366x768 running unity. However, there's also a race conditions issue with nautilus causing this to appear sporadic. [Bug 936958] Re: Nautilus is now placing desktop icons far away from the launcher
Yes, that could be a workaround until we find out why reveived screen window margins sometimes have incorrect values. However, imo a final solution shall trust those margins and that those are the root cause of the problem. Margins here shall be controlled by Unity but I suspect that there are other players around too such as compiz that set/change those margins, mainly thinking of the left margin for the launcher. Then it's a question of how it should work. Just noticed, using launcher never hide mode, that desktop icons today really moves when changing the launcher width. Also checked in oneiric that acted the same way and there without any flickering, which thus has been introduced in precise. However, for launcher autohide mode the the desktop icons don't move, i.e appear static! An intentional behaviour? Another strange behaviour I noticed is that the leftmost desktop icons are moved below the launcher for the case setting the launcher width to 49! But the question remains, how shall it work? Is there any design decision made here? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/936958 Title: Nautilus is now placing desktop icons far away from the launcher To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/936958/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 936958] Re: Nautilus is now placing desktop icons far away from the launcher
launcher is hidden by default and so we can have icon on the far left. Well, that would be great, but implies another launcher behavior when you drag an icon, right? As is today the hidden launcher always pops up when you drag an icon on the desktop which prevents you from using that leftmost part. [Bug 936958] Re: Nautilus is now placing desktop icons far away from the launcher
Just tested the moving icon scenario now and found two side-effects: Glitching What happens here is that the desktop icon workarea is updated three times! - first update with a correct value for left margin - second update with left margin = 0 !!! - third update with a correct value for left margin Expected: one update only The second and third updates cause the glitch as the icons here are moved to the left edge and then back again to its correct posisions. This is probably doable to fix as the unity session is active and by assuming that a left margin = 0 is always wrong. Other possible ways are to find the root cause why there are three updates instead of one and/or why the left margin = 0 in the second update. Icons moving out of screen - This one I guess is a showstopper for this scenario. Assume a launcher width equals 32 and with some desktop icons placed at the right edge of the screen. Increasing the launcher width to 64 here will partly move those icons away from the screen but still possible to grab and drag back into the screen. There is no mechanism implemented as I know of in nautilus atm to do a re-layout of the icons and even if there were one this could cause icons to overlap eachother on the right side. Thus, remains the static left margin = 64 that cause a white space between the launcher and icons on the left side. Looks buggy and wastes horizontal space but works. My conclusion is that there is no perfect (precise) solution to this.

That bug does concider the fact that the desktop icon container shall be unchanged idependent of whether the kauncher is visible or not. That (design decision?) is stated in bug #684649. The the left margin might be decreased or adjusted but not too low as this causes side effect especially with the launcher popping up as soon as one drags an icon on the screen. Furthermore, the launcher's margin is registered i X and received from XGetWindowProperty. For a 32 pix wide launcher the left margin received is 49 pixels and for a hidden launcher it's 0 pixels. Tthis is why adding 66-15=51 to that left margin causes this issue.

[Bug 886667] Re: boot moves desktop icons
The issue causing desktop icons at the bottom of the screen to be moved upwards and in some cases (sporadically) overlap other icons is caused by multiple setups of the desktop icon container in combination with a first too high top margin value setting the height of the desktop icon container. Futhermore, if a desktop icon container has been drawn it will not be redrawn with new margin values, see module libnautilus- private/nautilus-icon-container.c/redo_layout_internal. In my case this issue occurs when a top margin value of 300 pixels appears (from Xlib XGetWindowProperty) and then is used to finally set the desktop icon container height. As the Unity panel is 24 pixels the the empty part in the lower part of the screen will be 300-24 = 276 pixels. So any icons in that lower empty area will then be moved upwards into the desktop icon container. As the function redo_layout_internal today does not support redrawal of the desktop icon container one way is to filter bad margin values. As it only seems to be caused by a too high top margin value this can be done in the module src/nautilus-desktop-icon- view.c/icon_container_set_workarea. The highest value to be passed is set to 49 in the following patch but can be reduced further down to max of panel height (top margin) for any sessions supported by ubuntu. Furthermore, it might be included into the patch 02_additional_marge_for_unity.patch. ** Patch added: top margin patch https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/886667/+attachment/2768289/+files/nautilus_top_margin.patch -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/886667 Title: boot moves desktop icons To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/886667/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

For consistency with this new approach I think this should be the case and what your users expect. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/689733 Title: Application icons should only display windows from the current workspace in the window spread To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/689733/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 689733] Re: Application icons should only display windows from the current workspace in the window spread
Agree upon that this really is a poor decision. Linux is a multi-workspace operating system and this has to be considered on designing features. Assume the following as one of examples: - the user has set up a number of workspaces - a nautilus window exists on two or more workspaces This design decision then makes it very hard to find those nautilus windows located on other workspaces without having to: - manually browse through all workspaces - click the launcher folder button each time (window could be hidden) Not really a user friendly way of working. There are ways to solve this deficiency, e.g: - make it configurable - combine it with a key - revert this decision So what I'm trying to state here is that features like this one must consider the fact that Linux is a multi-workspace operating system.
@Mark: I'm sorry to have to disagree with you in this matter. The following makes sense - spread för all applications windows in current workspace (alt-tab) - spread for a specific application's windows incl all workspaces However, this does not make much sense - spread for a specific application's windows in current workspace (now leftclick) Hereby I leave this discussion in hope that this will be reconcidered.
[Bug 922678] [NEW] System Settings Appearance theme list lacks existing themes
Public bug reported: System Settings Appearance only lists the themes Adwaita, Ambiance, Radiance, HighContrast and HighContrastInverse. This while Advanced Settings (Gnome Tweak Tool) also lists Greybird and Raleigh plus any Gtk+ themes in the user's ~/.themes. [Bug 723862] Re: Nautilus quicklist does not contain the locations previously found under the 'Places' menu.
I would rather prefer that shortcuts in the quicklist open new tabs than new windows. That was also what I expected the first time I tested this new Home quicklist. Myself I use a number of customized quicklists and one example here is firefox. There I use firefox -new-tab url to achieve that and the firefox window is always focused. That's to me an expected behaviour not new windows each time crowding the desktop. However, I was going to test that case for nautilus but can't find a command option for setting up a new nautilus tab. Maybe that's why this behaviour was not implemented? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/723862 Title: Nautilus quicklist does not contain the locations previously found under the 'Places' menu. [Bug 723862] Re: Nautilus quicklist does not contain the locations previously found under the 'Places' menu.
We can maybe link to that, but we have to take into account the case where there is no nautilus window opened, raise to focus this one, move your current workspaces and such. All that work for e.g. firefox even when there is no current firefox window but I guess nautilus is not designed to support this behaviour fully and easily as one have to patch nautilus to implement the quicklist. I would though gladly accept a patch doing it :) I would gladly help if I had the skills ;) Hope that someone having that and time will look into this. [Bug 723862] Re: Nautilus quicklist does not contain the locations previously found under the 'Places' menu.
A comment to this fix: It's not a good idea to alphabetically sort folders and bookmarks as one group of objects. [Bug 723862] Re: Nautilus quicklist does not contain the locations previously found under the 'Places' menu.
Ok, I see. Anyhow, one approach could be to use the output from command ls below cd ~ ls -d */ which lists ALL not hidden user top folders. Another approach is to extract the default top folders from the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs and adding the home folder. From that those top folders can be removed from the bookmark list in the quicklist. The second approach is more in line with Nautilus computer folder list content. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/723862 Title: Nautilus quicklist does not contain the locations previously found under the 'Places' menu. I prefixed the bookmarks from the top folders with | without quotes as a wotkaround. This will list top folder (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music etc) first and remaining bookmarks last in the quicklist. I think this is the preferred way as top folder are few (at least if only default folders are listed) and bookmarks can be numerous. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/723862 Title: Nautilus quicklist does not contain the locations previously found under the 'Places' menu.
