[Bug 1674760] Re: plasma-discover crashed with SIGSEGV in QQuickScrollBarAttached::qt_metacall()

2017-07-24 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Just installed on a new system, and like everyone else is saying, it
crashes..

Do we plan on fixing this one? Because it's a pretty big show stopper,
especially when you then can't open up anything, everything just starts
quitting on you.

[Bug 1683435] Re: Mouse speed/acceleration ignored in 17.04

2017-05-18 Thread Brandon MacEachern
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1682193 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1682193

I have tried all sorts of mice, either a Logitech Trackman (my
preferred), or a wired USB mouse, nothing.

Even tried a USB/PS2 adapter and used a few different mice, still
nothing.

[Bug 1518813] Re: sharing panel fails to properly launch required daemons

2017-04-11 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I'm having this issue on Ubuntu Gnome 16.10.

Does anyone care about fixing these issues or is Linux seriously so full
of bugs these days that everyone is twiddling thumbs while they relearn
coding?

Before you respond (to the devs), prove me wrong. I used to be a Linux
dev 15 years ago, and quit. PROVE ME WRONG and try, just try making
something that actually works out of the box without broken features.

[Bug 1648215] Re: Nautilus fails to launch occasionally

2017-04-11 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Vej, I didn't even know you responded to me, Launchpad never sent me an
email, and with the busy schedule I am running, I had no time to
manually check.

Either way, since Unity is dead, there's no point in figuring this out.
It's not an issue with Ubuntu 16.10, and since Unity is dead anyway,
I've moved on to using Gnome ahead of schedule, and still have no issue
now.

It doesn't matter, no point in fixing planned dead software.

[Bug 1657875] Re: Google Chrome flickers badly on web pages

2017-02-20 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Let me break it down for you, the BIOS is NOT out of date in regards to
any of the Intel video BIOS portions. Version 2.27 has the same Intel
video BIOS extension that 2.29 contains. It is foolish to update BIOS's
just because you can, generally you do them because something is broken,
but in this case, the broken portion is NOT because of the BIOS at all.
If the devs over there at Canonical had a brain on their head, you could
have easily determined this by grabbing any of your same CPU/GPU type
laptops and ran 16.04 with Chrome. In fact, many people have already
explained this countless times only to have had their time wasted.

Fact is, Xorg people already now know about the bug, and know it is a
fault with Xorg, but sadly, they have not fully found the issue as to
why. So this bug report is a bust. My time was in fact wasted, and yes
I will call out and accuse those who make people go through hoops that
will not resolve it. You are the dev, correct?

So once again, the portion of the BIOS that needs to be update, IS
already up to date, none of the other fixes are related to this, and
being Xorg already knows that a BIOS update won't resolve it, I refuse
to update my BIOS for no reason other than your explained reason which
IS the invalid step to pursue.

This bug IS a personal matter because the flickering almost gave my
epileptic friend a seizure, and you bet I won't have my time wasted. It
took almost 10 days to get a response from you, it's taken MANY others
months to get any response. This issue was not a problem before 16.04,
and so far since being on 16.10, it's gone away again. It IS a 16.04
problem, and for an LTS release, you WILL fix the problem, either be it
by backporting the Xorg drivers, or anything you need to do.

I am done with this bug report, go fix it yourself. I already fixed it
because my workaround IS valid. And for my one last remaining same
laptop on 16.04, it has permanently fixed the issue, and works faster
with higher framerates in GL games.

PS: I am a long time Linux user, for 17 years in fact. This isn't my
first go at getting things fixed, but I'll be damned if I sit here and
have a dev who IS wasting my time, and not familiar with the Xorg bug
reports on this same matter.

Goodbye, I'm done here. I'll setup my own PPA to fix this issue.

[Bug 1657875] Re: Google Chrome flickers badly on web pages

2017-02-12 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I am not trying out testing versions, I'm sorry, but you guys have
wasted a lot of our time, you and the Xorg team. It's a joke really.
You added the tag "bios-outdated" there's nothing outdated about my BIOS
so I don't know where you think that's an appropriate tag.

I'm sorry but testing zesty on a production computer is not an
acceptable thing to do, if non of your devs have an i7 Haswell or higher
with this issue, you simply aren't trying hard enough to find it. I
already explained what the fix is, and if Zesty doesn't have it, I'm not
wasting time. These machines for work are to stay on LTS, so it is your
duty to fix it. Can't claim to have long-term-support, if your support
is literally like this.

[Bug 1664047] [NEW] File Properties window doesn't allow interaction with folder

2017-02-12 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 16.10, and the included version of Nautilus, when you right-
click a file and go to Properties, you can only seemingly pull up one
properties window PER folder, as the parent window you were just in is
frozen in time, you can't click anything in it. Essentially making this
a *major* usability issue, because now comparing two files in the same
folder is rather impossible. I'd have to open up that one folder twice
in two separate windows which is completely absurd.

[Bug 1664046] [NEW] Unity has problems with Terminal in Launcher

2017-02-12 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Public bug reported:

Unity's launcher seems to have some issues in regard to Terminal in
16.10, or perhaps more specifically, a machine upgraded from 16.04. I
haven't installed 16.10 to really know (or care as of right now, I'm too
busy with real life to really be bothered to test this further).

When you drag Terminal from the Unity Dash, to the launcher, and then
click on Terminal, instead of it opening on that icon, it creates yet
another terminal icon, causing you to have two terminals. If you
however create that icon in your launcher rather by dragging from Dash,
but right-clicking the open one and telling it to Lock to launcher, then
it will stay open just fine on it's own.

This appears like it could be related from the 16.04 upgrade to 16.10,
as it appears there's actually TWO Terminal .desktop files, but one is
hidden from the menu. I don't know which one is supposed to stay there
or not, or why there's even a duplicate in the first place, but every
machine on my network that was upgraded from 16.04 to 16.10, now has
this very same issue.

I made a video demonstrating this issue so there's no confusion:

2017-01-22 Thread Brandon MacEachern
This is a bug yet once again in the latest version of 16.04.1, that was
installed fresh back in November.

sudo rm /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/20auto-upgrades

does NOT work. I have to edit 10periodic and set everything to 0, but
once you set security updates to download and install automatically, it
once again goes dim on next launch of Software and Updates.

I can now officially confirm, that simply doing as you mentioned:

sudo nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
   Option "TearFree""true"
   Option "DRI""3"
EndSection

Has FIXED the issue entirely. I feel that this change should be made
permanent in 16.04 LTS to fix any Intel issues regarding sandy-bridge
GPU's or higher.

I have been trying a few of the recommended changes, and so far, Force
rasterization on all layers didn't work. It was less of an issue but
not completely gone.

I have now moved on to the one you mentioned, using sna and dri 3.0. I
thought these were default options though? Either way I forced it, and
so far so good for now. (And the pull down menu glitch as mentioned in
the other bug report, seems to have disappeared also).

[Bug 1657875] [NEW] Google Chrome flickers badly on web pages

2017-01-19 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Public bug reported:

In reference to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-
video-intel/+bug/1586539

Was asked by Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch) to make this new bug
report.

Google chrome intermittently flickers (sometimes even Firefox I found,
but very very rarely), and can cause a seizure in some people as it can
flash between black and white 60 times a second. This is a major issue
that needs to be resolved as I'm sure many who are suffering this bug,
feel as well.

Please refer to the other bug report which is no "Incomplete" as it goes
into more detail than I have time to honestly type out over again.

[Bug 1433032] Re: Starting Chrome makes gnome-keyring-daemon loading 100% of a CPU thread for 5 at least mins

2017-01-19 Thread Brandon MacEachern
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1174162 ***

Affecting me on latest Chromium browser and Ubuntu Mate 16.04 on a
raspberry Pi.

As if it was one more reason to go back to Firefox, this is possibly the
final nail in the coffin.

[Bug 1648215] Re: Nautilus fails to launch occasionally

2017-01-02 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I have converted my father to Linux, and he's on Ubuntu 16.04.1, and his
computer is observing this same Nautilus freeze. I am hoping someone
can look into this. He doesn't have a launchpad account, and doesn't
know a single thing about Linux to even really be of assistance here.
But, I am watching over his machine so this is another +1 on my side.

[Bug 1649011] [NEW] File Choser crashes in GTK3 apps when unselecting multiple items

2016-12-10 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Public bug reported:

When using the mouse to select multiple files in a GTK3 based
application via the file choser, everything works as expected, but if
you undrag the lasso you just made to unselect them, once the last file
is unselected, the entire applications crash. It doesn't matter what
program it is, if it's GTK3 based, it'll crash. Either gedit, Firefox,
etc. I was told via an ubuntu forum admin that it looks like nautilus
so I'm filing it under it as such. I have found it effects any
platform, Raspberry Pi (the one I'm filing this bug with right now), and
my X86_64 desktop. Both do the exact same thing. I made a video
detailing the exact issue to help point you in the right direction:
https://youtu.be/_Zl1p6hXNQ0

Both machines are up to date on the latest LTS release (16.04 as of this
writing).

[Bug 1648215] [NEW] Nautilus fails to launch occasionally

2016-12-07 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Public bug reported:

Every once in a while, Nautilus will fail to launch. Clicking it's icon
in the Unity launcher will either open up a black window, outlined only
by its shadow, or it just flashes in the launcher and nothing happens.

Sometimes when this happens, it can be fixed by killing Nautilus
entirely and re-opening it again. This time when it happened, it looks
like it had something to do with media information with unity-music-
daemon, however this machine doesn't have anything setup in either
Banshee or Rythmbox yet. Here's a video capture of it happening:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJdzED7z9nQ

The system log seen in the video, from when it crashed, to when I
relaunched Nautilus after killing it, is pasted below. I asked on the
Ubuntu forums about this and a few others said they are having the same
issue, but since I found no bug related to this directly on launchpad, I
decided to open one myself.

[Bug 797808] Re: Window auto-maximise functionality should be disabled on monitors with a resolution above 1024 x 600

2016-10-15 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I just would like to ask, where was the fix released? In 2016 on 16.04,
on my tri-monitor setup, with monitors ranging from 1440x900 to
2560x1440, I get this all the time and it's annoying beyond belief, I
just want the windows remembering where I put them, that's it.

[Bug 1208993] Re: Ubuntu slows down and hangs while copying file from/to USB

2016-10-15 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I'm having this issue right now on 16.04. What's strange, is that if I
copy say 600GB worth of thousands of files, about half way through, Xorg
will start chewing up resources, and everything slows down to a hault,
even though literally the only thing I ever opened was Nautilus. I
never opened Firefox, or anything elses. Straight boot to the file
manager to copy files. It's a weird issue to say the least, because I
can't determine why Xorg would be freaking out on large file copying.
If the files finish, the performance is still poor until I reboot the
machine.

[Bug 1307144] Re: 'unredirect fullscreen windows' causes tearing

2015-07-25 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Can confirm this issue. For example, if I keep unredirected fullscreen
windows turned on, and play Netflix in Google Chrome, for the most part
the movies do play without tearing, but as soon as I hit the volume
button and the OSD fades away, tearing happens and doesn't go away
unless the OSD is up.

But, turning off unredirected fullscreen windows fixes the issue.
Also switched to play the new Unreal Tournament engine, and saw no
performance issue by turning this off, so I am going to personally just
leave it off.

[Bug 1471979] [NEW] Laptop lid setting on AC ignored

2015-07-06 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Public bug reported:

In XFCE's power management settings, there are two options for what to
do when you close the lid of the laptop. On battery, and for when on AC
power.

Problem is, while on AC, it's still using the on battery setting, and
never actually uses the on AC power setting. For example, my settings
are as follows:

On Battery: Suspend
On AC Power: Switch off display

When I close the laptop while plugged into the charger, it still goes to
sleep and suspends. If I however change the on battery status to Switch
off display, then closing the lid does just that, doesn't suspend, and
stays on with the display switched off, despite it being plugged into
the power cord.

I have verified that Xfce knows the charger is plugged in as the battery
icon shows the lightning bolt when it should.

[Bug 1411300] Re: Radeon flickering line after sleep

2015-02-02 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I would like to add, that in Kubuntu, it doesn't show up if I have it
set to show the lock screen on resume. But if the lock screen is not
set to be shown on resume (just go straight to my desktop), then the
line does make an appearance again.

Currently using Kubuntu for now as a result, but I want to go back to
Unity when this bug is fixed (since on Kubuntu, I can prevent it with
the method above, but this trick isn't working on any other desktop
environment).

[Bug 1411300] [NEW] Radeon flickering line after sleep

2015-01-15 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Public bug reported:

Since Ubuntu 14.10, no matter what DE or version of Ubuntu (Xubuntu,
Kubuntu), after sleep there is a flickering line at the bottom of my
screen. For Kubuntu, it can be prevented by simply requiring a password
after resume. For Unity, running unity --replace works as a
workaround, and for Xubuntu, it's random as to whatever fixes it or not.

It has been an annoyance, but I don't want to go back to an earlier
version of Ubuntu, as the Radeon driver in 14.10, actually now allows me
to use WebGL in Chrome, and things like Google Maps.. (it was a big
problem as the previous radeon driver had a lot of bugs on this GPU,
most of which were in fact fixed). I also can't use FGLRX, because for
whatever reason, it is actually slower than Ubuntu 14.10's included open
source driver (weird, I know, right?) The driver is generally perfect,
except this problem with the flickering line. I am using the VGA
compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Seymour
[Radeon HD 6400M/7400M Series].

Please assist, because this is a laptop, and can't just change graphics
cards (I would if it was the solution though), and well, hitting hard
times, so switching laptops isn't a choice. Besides, it's only 3 years
old and still does everything I need done.

I made a video demonstrating the flickering line at the bottom of the
screen on resume from sleep. Sometimes videos explain things better
than words: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-t3K95g898

[Bug 1376776] Re: Sound panel's input selection resets the default on every invocation

2014-12-24 Thread Brandon MacEachern
@Sebastien, I only switch distros when a bug takes too long to fix, one
shouldn't need to wait so long especially when switching sound outputs
and inputs easily system wide must be done for my production.

[Bug 1136110] Re: USB Audio Codec choppy playback

2014-11-21 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I also am having terrible USB audio. Trying to just chill listening to
the blues, and hear every minute, a pop or hiccup. If I switch to the
onboard sound (even if SPDIF output), perfectly fine. My monitor's
built in speakers are USB, and I'm about to just connect regular
speakers to the built in sound output.

I've been having this problem for several years. (Since I bought this
computer in 2008 to be exact).

[Bug 1136110] Re: USB Audio Codec choppy playback

2014-11-21 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I should note that running either Mac OS X or Windows, results in
perfect audio. It's only ever been Linux with the problem. Though to
be honest, after 6 years of unresolved USB audio, I've grown to just
accept that this will never be fixed.

[Bug 1382977] Re: [SRU] Thunar open default not respecting mimetype

2014-11-14 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I managed to force an update with sudo apt-get upgrade.

However, one small problem, the desktop icons right-click menu still
show the wrong default, but DOES open up with the correct app (as it did
originally). So there's still a small UI problem here.

[Bug 1382977] Re: [SRU] Thunar open default not respecting mimetype

2014-11-14 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Correct. Thunar itself is looking great, but I thought the desktop was
also a part of Thunar too. Though the right-click menu on the desktop
is showing the wrong open with app, it is however, opening the correct
application on double-click. So right now, it's just more of a
interface issue.

[Bug 1389300] [NEW] Display frozen during sleep

2014-11-04 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Public bug reported:

When the computer goes to sleep, it freezes to a black screen with a
single text cursor frozen (not blinking.). If I try to go to TTY1, it
goes there, but upon entering my user name, it freezes and doesn't do
anything. This happened since I got a mysterious Ubuntu 14.10 update.
(It didn't ask me if I wanted to update, it just popped up saying I
needed to reboot my computer, and I couldn't find any records as to what
update it actually was).

I have tried both Xubuntu (what I'm using now) and regular Ubuntu, both
are doing the same thing.

Sleep mode used to work just fine since 13.10, now it's broken. This is
a laptop and needs sleep mode to work, as I can't sit there waiting for
the machine to boot every time.

[Bug 1389306] Re: Sleep mode frozen

2014-11-04 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Apparently if I wait long enough the computer WILL regain the ability to
wake, but networking is completely broken. And I was able to get some
logs out of it. Here's an attachment. Someone please assist, I lost
time at work today because my computer needs to be sleeping during
breaks and lunch, and it did cause me to loose time. It's affecting my
pay now, so this MUST be fixed.

[Bug 1376776] Re: Sound panel's input selection resets the default on every invocation

2014-10-29 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I'll try checking the fix when I get back home from work. If I leave
Ubuntu control center open, it does actually change the inputs just
fine, and apps get the change, I found that interesting because it is
controlling Pulse. On my desktop closing the window seems to stay, but
reopening sound preferences looses it. On my laptop, of which this bug
report is from, sometimes closing the window looses the preferences
also. I've been tackling this since 14.04 came out so I'm glad someones
helping right now, and from what I see, definitely on the right track.
Thanks.

Once again, I do not understand any of this. You're asking me to do
this but I am just a casual user who wrote this bug report because me,
like others, are experiencing this only on Ubuntu.

If you can ELI5 (explain like I'm 5), I might be able to do something.
Otherwise if not, I give up and will abandon all hope here. Linux
should not require a user to be basically a programmer to fix something
stupid like a built in microphone on my computer.

[Bug 1334329] [NEW] Sound input settings not saved

Public bug reported:

When attempting to set my preferred sound input device, simply leaving
sound preferences and going back to sound preferences, and selecting
input, causes the default SPDIF to be selected again, and not the
internal microphone I preferred. I made a video to demonstrate what I
mean by this here: http://youtu.be/9Q9EQvLl_rA

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -
About Ubuntu
14.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or
by checking in Software Center
I really don't know. It's just the sound preferences.

3) What you expected to happen
For my selected sound input to be saved.

4) What happened instead
Keeps defaulting to the top sound input
