[Bug 488566] [NEW] No editing tools in F-Spot View window

2009-11-25 Thread Brian Burger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

If you open an individual image file in F-Spot (via Nautilus, or an
image on your Desktop) there are none of the image editing tools
available in F-Spot Viewer and no way to switch to the actual full
(useful!) F-Spot window from the Viewer.

[Bug 488574] [NEW] F-Spot should be able to read/show existing ~/Photos directories w/o Import

2009-11-25 Thread Brian Burger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: f-spot

Ubuntu provides, by default, a ~/Photos directory, suggesting to new
users that this is a good place to put your pictures.

However, F-Spot is unable to actually view this directory without
importing (and attempting to duplicate, by default!) everything in it.
This is especially irritating to users moving large existing photo
collections into a new Ubuntu install.

gthumb is able to function without importing/duplicating everything.
F-Spot should manage the same feat.

2009-11-25 Thread Brian Burger
gthumb offers a very good suite of basic editing tools - resize, crop,
rotate, simple colour/contrast tweaking, a few other things.

At a minimum, f-spot's view mode should offer roughly the same options
as gthumb currently has before GIMP is removed from the default Ubuntu
install.

[Bug 366620] Re: Play Album and Play Song didn't work anymore

2009-05-21 Thread Brian Burger
Updated from jaunty-proposed.

The queue/play buttons work now, but for some reason Muine isn't listing
my entire music collection - I have a dozen Rolling Stones albums, for
example, but Muine only shows me one of them.

I deleted /,gnome2/muine entirely, tried to re-import my Music
directory, and even tried a complete remove reinstall, and it's still
refusing to list all my music.

If this counts as a new bug, let me know, I'll open one.

+1 to this.

It's a *notification area*. Granted there are apps which populate it
that shouldn't, but how in FSM's name is the *update-notifier* as it was
configured in 8,10 previous one of them?

And popups? As has been pointed out more than once in these comments, 10
years of abusive web-design practices have taught users to kill popups
popunders as fast as possible.

They're not helpful or informative, they're either intrusive, or (for
Windows users) a sign your system has (again) been compromised.

[Bug 371959] [NEW] Evolution puts notifications outside the notification area

2009-05-04 Thread Brian Burger
Public bug reported:

Evolution in Ubuntu 9.04 puts it's notification icon - the little
envelope - in the user's area of the panel, instead of in the
notification area where it belongs.

See screenshot below - the vertical line is the lefthand edge of the

[Bug 338682] Re: OpenType Fonts associated as ODF Template Files

2009-05-01 Thread Brian Burger
Over on the upstream bug, Bastien Nocera says, So file a bug against the
applications that fail to detect the files
correctly instead.

Wouldn't that be Nautilus in this case, or KDE's equivilent?

I'm not trying to start an arguement, I'm puzzled - this is clearly a
bug. It's a regression bug, even. Yet both upstream here, the response
is Not ours, go elsewhere.. They claim it's not their mime type
definitions at fault. You claim it's not Nautilus.

One party or another has to drop the NOTOURBUG flag, and as a user, I
really don't care who does it, providing it gets accepted that yes, this
is actually a bug.

OTF preview used to work, after all, before Ubuntu 8.04 wrecked font
preview completely.

[Bug 338682] Re: OpenType Fonts associated as ODF Template Files

2009-04-30 Thread Brian Burger
Does Nautilus not handle mime-type/opening issues in Gnome?

This is not a problem with the current Gnome Font Viewer, as is easily proven:
1. Find an OTF font file on your system.
2. If you just double-click on it, OpenOffice attempts to open it, and fails.
2. Right-click the OTF, go Open With - Open With Other Application - Font
Viewer
3. Font Viewer opens and displays the OTF preview just as it should, exactly
like a TTF is shown.

So I'm not sure how this bug can be Invalid against all three of the
targets currently listed. It's should be valid against at least one, if
not all.

This bug isn't in Font Viewer, it's in Nautilus and/or whatever mime-
type definitions are being used in Ubuntu 9.04.

[Bug 238459] [NEW] 8.04 Nautilus does not appear to dismount USB storage properly

2008-06-08 Thread Brian Burger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Nautilus in 8.04 automounts all my USB keys perfectly, handles files on
them or transfers just fine, and while it appears to dismount them just
fine (right-click - UnMount Volume) the volume is NOT visually removed
from Nautilus's Tree view.

In Nautilus's Places mode, the USB key is removed only after it is
physically unplugged, not immediately on unmounting.

In Tree mode, the USB key is still 'visible' even after physically
removing it from the USB socket.

Similar behaviour with SD cards mounted via a USB cardreader, in both
Places Tree modes.

Ubuntu 8.04, Nautilus 1:2.22.3-0ubuntu2, brand-new install of 8.04.

Here's a short clip that totem-gstreamer in Hardy can´t manage, but
every release of totem prior to Hardy played fine.

It's supposed to be only 4 seconds long; when I just tried it here I

SECOND LONG clip.

I've got every -restricted, -bad, -ugly etc etc etc set of gstreamer

[Bug 230963] Re: Gstreamer in Hardy is less capable than previous releases

2008-05-16 Thread Brian Burger
Sebastien - using the gst-launch-0.10 playbin command from terminal
results in the video I provided above playing perfectly.

Attempting to run it through Totem (either starting totem first, or just
double-clicking in Nautilus) results in the unwatchably slow preformance
again, UNLESS I've already tried the gst-launch-0.10 command first -
then it works.

I just restarted this machine to test that, too - running the command
line first means working vid. Trying the non-command line lauch first
mean unwatchable video.

Forgot to include some system/OS info in my initial report: brand-new
clean install of Hardy, no crufty old config files left over from old
versions of Ubuntu, all the codecs I can find installed via Synaptic...

[Bug 230963] [NEW] Gstreamer in Hardy is less capable than previous releases

2008-05-15 Thread Brian Burger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

A significant number of video files I have do not play in Totem in
Hardy, despite playing perfectly in previous releases of totem.

Sound is screwed up, many vids play incredibly slowly - at half speed or
worse - and a number simply refuse to play at all.

These are video files that have worked in previous versions of Ubuntu as
far back as Breezy, so I KNOW the issue is not the video files - it's
that gstreamer in Hardy has found some new and creative way to suck.

Most of these videos are clips either pulled off random websites or
emailed by friends, so I have no idea what or who holds copyright, or
what the procedure is. I am willing to post some that worked perfectly
in the past but do not with Hardy´s regression in gstreamer, though.

[Bug 117726] Re: [gutsy] muine crashes on adding music to the playlist

2008-01-17 Thread Brian Burger
Wouter, Ubuntu only updates packages on version release - so next round
won't be until Ubuntu 8.04's release in April.

Your 0.8.8 debs work in 7.10 for me - thanks! I won't have to keep
trying to like Rhythmbox now, hopefully!

Muine now seems to use a whole lot more resources than I remember from
previous (official Ubuntu) releases, though - between 9-14% of CPU
constantly while it's playing.

By contrast, Rhythmbox seems to be using about 2-6% while playing.

Is this an 0.8.8 issue, or did previous versions of Muine use this much
CPU too, and I've just forgotten?

[Bug 150428] Re: pidgin text input box moves on text input (Gutsy Beta)

2007-10-08 Thread Brian Burger
Surely the default text box size should be increased?

Resizing does work, but you have to drag it bigger every time you open a
new window - hardly ideal.

[Bug 150428] pidgin text input box moves on text input (Gutsy Beta)

2007-10-07 Thread Brian Burger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

Pidgin 2.2.0 in Gutsy Beta - while typing in the text-input box while on
IRC, the text you are entering moves up and down with each new
character.

I asked in #pidgin on Freenode, and the dev there suggested it was
either a font error, or a GTK/Gnome theme error causing it.

All text causes this annoying bouncing up and down - upper case, lower
case, characters with ascenders or descender or without, puctuation -
anything.

[Bug 150434] synaptic/apt-get/Add/Remove errors on Gutsy Beta LiveCD

2007-10-07 Thread Brian Burger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

Ubuntu Gutsy Beta LiveCD, checked on first boot with the Check This CD
ingegrity checker, and passed.

Starts normally, most apps run just fine, but:
* Synaptic will not start at all
* Add/Remove Apps hangs on startup, and has to be killed.
* apt-get or aptitude from the command line complain that something else is
already using dpkg:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily
unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another
process using it?

There is nothing running (visible in gnome-system-monitor, anyway) that
should be locking apt-get out like that.

And a dpkg lock shouldn't be preventing Synaptic or Add/Remove from
starting.

This could well be an error in my livecd, but the ISO checked out w/
md5sum and the 'Check This CD' app reported no errors.

[Bug 150443] Compiz in Gutsy Beta: No workspace switching with mousewheel

2007-10-07 Thread Brian Burger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

In metacity (and in other window managers) you can switch virtual
desktops/workspaces by hovering your mouse pointer over the workspace-
switcher and rolling the mousewheel up and down.

Compiz breaks this, and forces users of multiple workspaces to use the
keyboard shortcut.

Why are we shipping this incomplete window manager by default in Gutsy,
anyway?

[Bug 150434] Re: synaptic/apt-get/Add/Remove errors on Gutsy Beta LiveCD

2007-10-07 Thread Brian Burger
Starting both synaptic gnome-app-install from terminal show no errors,
but they both hang right after starting.

Trying apt-get first gets a complaint about dpgk lock, which is resolved
with sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock - but running apt-get or aptitude a
second time results in either hanging at Reading package lists... 0%
Ctrl+C doesn't stop them, and kiling gnome-terminal leaves dpgk locked
again.

[Bug 123308] Re: Muine sometimes hangs on startup

I get the same bug with muine in feisty - it frequently won't start the
first time I try it.

I wind up doing killall mono or the equivilent in Gnome's System

time.

This is new in Feisty - I've been using muine since Hoary, never had
this issue before.

[Bug 94026] No address bar focus in new tabs

2007-03-20 Thread Brian Burger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

When using either File-New Tab or Ctrl+T to get a new tab in Epiphany
2.16.1, the cursor is not automatically focused on the new tab's address
bar - you have to click with the mouse or use Ctrl+L to actually begin
using the new address bar.

Both Firefox 2.x and Opera 9.x automatically focus on a new tab or
window's address bar; I'd argue that this is expected and helpful
behaviour that Epiph should do as well.

[Bug 94030] No middle-click to close on tabs

2007-03-20 Thread Brian Burger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

Other tabbed browsers (ie, both FF Opera) use the middle-click button,
when clicked anywhere on a tab, to close that tab.

This is a fast way to manage tabs - the whole tab is available as a
close button, essentially - and the middle-button-click is deliberate
enough that accidental use of this feature seems fairly unlikely.

like it got any useful information:

Aside from the disclaimer/warrenty blurb when you start gdb, the above is all
the info I got. Does this help, or should I try to run gdb more?

[Bug 4654] Re: Nautilus Burn Audio, Photo or Data CD? popup remains in background

2006-11-07 Thread Brian Burger
I went to check this one in 6.06... and discovered a possibly related
bug that's even more irritating: The You have inserted a blank CD-R
popup goes away on it's own after two or three seconds, without any
input from the user.

The blank CD-R also doesn't appear in Nautilus' Tree view.

However, blank DVD-Rs still act normally, and in fact the original bug
of the popup not coming up from behind certain apps appears fixed - but
only for DVD-Rs.

I'll file a new bug with the new CD-R behaviour and link it to this one,
after I do a bit more poking around.
